Product Description
"The Abusing Family, by Drs. Blair and Rita Justice, is very well written, rich in content and intellectually provocative. A statistics indicate, child abuse is recognized as one of the major social problems in the United States today. While many authors have shown a concern for environmental and social stresses impinging upon the abusing family, the Justices have a new emphasis and interpretation of stress as it relates to these families. There are several other unique features in this book. The authors are pioneers in their use of the transactional analytic approach to treating these families. This application appears to be genuinely innovative and has received a tangible, reasonable and plausible demonstration here. They are the first to combine transactional analysis and Goal Attainment Scaling in an effort to document explicit, negotiated treatment expectations which have both evaluative and therapeutic relevance. Their use of evaluation of treatment outcome as a means of influencing ultimate legal disposition is also new in this problem area." --- Thomas J. 5-0 out of 5 stars Multicultural and Inspirational
As a teacher I found this book extremely useful because it represented so many different cultures and was so organized. The organization made it quick and easy to use which is important for teachers. The stories were beautiful and authentic but not too long--definitely usable in a classroom setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Moon in the Well
I have returned to Erica Meade's The Moon in the Well because of some research I am doing about storytelling and wisdom traditions. Not having perused the book for several years, I had not remembered its animated, vibrant retellings and its soulful passion for the depth of stories and thier universal artistry and healing power. For anyone interested in the ways of the human heart this is indeed a wellspring book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories for Our Time
There are many anthologies out there, but this one is unique. These tales are beautifully rendered and exquisitly told. They are inspirational and practical, simple and wise, universal and local, poetic and instructional. At the end of each story Mead directs her reader to mythic and psychological themes. She offers reflections and suggestions for weaving stories meaningfully into our lives. This book is a gift to anyone engaged in personal self-reflection and social change, and a worthy companion to those in the healing and teaching professions.

Customer Reviews (2)

5-0 out of 5 stars All the colors, flavors and and visions of our world
This resource contains annotated bibliographies for books of fiction, oral tradition and poetry for these major groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-Americans.

As stated in thepreface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 forindividuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on theAmerican experience, and do not include content or stories that occur inother locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title.

Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisorsare clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher ofvarious ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type(fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources areindexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject.

Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail onthe resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation ofsubject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading ofthe citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easilydetermine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for alesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling orother uses.

At first glance, I would include this item in my collectionof multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensivelist of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotatedcitations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. Forexample, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources abouttheir European ethnic background.

Before making a final decision to buythis book, I would select and read a representative sampling of severallisted resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my ownindependent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid multi-ethnic reference with abundant resource
This resource includes annotated citations for a wide variety of resources focused on international ethnic and national groups. These ethnic groups in the United States are covered: African Americans, Asian Americans, HispanicAmericans, Native Americans. Also includes other areas and nations of theworld, such as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, Central and South America,as well as Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

Approximately 1038 resources are listed. Resources are grouped first byethnic group, then by grades: preschool through grade 3, grades 4-6, grades7-9 and grades 10-12. Full citation information is included.

Annotatedcitations are detailed and provide substantial information about theresource. Content scope, organization and format are described. When theresource is fiction, the story and characters are summarized, yet provideenough detail so I could glean an understanding of the style and relevanceof the resource.

This work also contains background and explanatorymaterial that is useful for understanding the use and evaluation ofmulti-ethnic resources. For example, the Introduction section describescriteria for evaluation and the major concerns of evaluation (specifically, general accuracy, stereotypes, language, author's perspective, currency offacts and interpretation, audience, integration of cultural information, balance and multidimensionality, and illustrations). This material servesas a solid introduction to the need for and issues related to multi-ethnicbibliography.

Additional context and background is provided for theethnic or national group covered in this work. For example, the openingpiece to the chapter on United States Native Americans describes thehistory, type and availability of resources for children and teenagers.

I would include this resource in my collection. Its scope allowsflexible use to answer questions about both ethnic groups located in theUnited States and other countries. The list of contributors indicates asolid diversity of individuals and professional backgrounds. However, Icannot directly ascertain the ethnicity or ethnic experiences of thecontributors.

The overall quality, completeness, breadth and depth ofthe citations is impressive. Given that Bowker is the publisher, I view thecontents with hopes of more accuracy and correctness than resources fromother publishers. However, I would still care to "spot check"several citations by a careful read of the original works. ... Read more
