Editorial Review Product Description David Abram, author of The Spell of the Sensuous, sets the tone with an insightful foreword. Meade provides an absorbing introduction that guides the reader through important background about storytelling, such as its origins and its importance in healing, teaching, and community building. The theme index lists the hundreds of themes that hold psychological, social, cultural, and environmental messages pertinent to our times. Praise for The Moon in the Well: "Erica Helm Meade has given us a valuable collection of teaching stories and many wise ways to use them. A blessing for discovering the modern power of these ancient inspirations."--Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart "This is a lovely conglomeration of stories-Irish, Greek, Persian, Siberian, Chilean, North American. It will be helpful for all of us looking for good stories to tell our children or someone else's children at a crucial moment of their lives."--Robert Bly "More than any other book in years, The Moon in the Well explains the rightful and useful place of myth and stories in people's lives. Erica Helm Meade does this in an engaging way, making connections between myth and story and how people are in the world-as individuals, members of families, communities, in nature, and in other larger senses of the world. Her retelling of stories-some well-known, others not-is alone worth the price of the book."--Rick Simonson, Elliott Bay Book Company and author of Multi-Cultural Literacy "A must read collection of stories by Erica Helm Meade.A masterful storyteller, she roots out the old stories we so desperately need to hear. Through artful retelling, she breathes life into them so their magic can go to work. A timely book for everyone who seeks to find meaning and support in everyday life and especially at times of crisis."--Sobonfu Somé, author of The Spirit of Intimacy and Welcoming Spirit Home "Erica Meade is not only an exquisite storyteller, but also a true wisewoman and healer who shows us just how to apply her storytelling medicine so that our lives might be healed and transformed. The Moon in the Well is a gem-anyone who has ever felt the power of myth should run out and buy it!"--Jalaja Bonheim, Ph.D., author of Aphrodite's Daughters and The Hunger for Ecstasy "This is a lodestar of a book, one that can help us find our way through the borderlands our civilization is crossing through now. It gives us stories that are truer than true, reminding us of the deepest human wisdom so we can laugh, and listen to each other and find the compassion to create new solutions for our time. I intend to give this wise compass to everyone on my gift list this year."--Sherry Ruth Anderson, author of The Feminine Face of God and The Cultural Creatives "Erica Helm Meade's thoughtful approach to the use of story enables us all to share story more wisely. A must-own for the professional teller's shelf. And an important collection for public library collections."--Margaret Read MacDonald, professional storyteller and author of A Parent's Guide to Storytelling Customer Reviews (4)

All the colors, flavors and and visions of our world As stated in thepreface, the resources are limited to those published 1985 through 1993 forindividuals of preschool age through high school. Resources focus on theAmerican experience, and do not include content or stories that occur inother locations. A total of 570 resources are listed in this title. Resources were reviewed by an Advisory Board for suitability. Advisorsare clearly identified and include librarians, professors and a teacher ofvarious ethnic backgrounds. Resource annotations are listed by type(fiction, oral tradition, poetry) and ethnic group. Also, resources areindexed by title, writer, illustrator, grade level and subject. Annotated citations are substantial and provide appropriate detail onthe resource's content, quality, format, illustrations, interpretation ofsubject and suitability for intended audience. Through a quick reading ofthe citation, a teacher, librarian, parent or other user can easilydetermine whether the book might interest the reader, be topical for alesson or plan, and serve well for individual reading, storytelling orother uses. At first glance, I would include this item in my collectionof multi-ethnic resources as it provides a relatively recent, comprehensivelist of print materials with quality, objective and complete annotatedcitations. This book is limited only by its scope of ethnic groups. Forexample, I could not answer patron questions or provide resources abouttheir European ethnic background. Before making a final decision to buythis book, I would select and read a representative sampling of severallisted resources. I could then compare and contrast the accuracy, completeness and objectivity of the resource's citation with my ownindependent read.
Solid multi-ethnic reference with abundant resource Approximately 1038 resources are listed. Resources are grouped first byethnic group, then by grades: preschool through grade 3, grades 4-6, grades7-9 and grades 10-12. Full citation information is included. Annotatedcitations are detailed and provide substantial information about theresource. Content scope, organization and format are described. When theresource is fiction, the story and characters are summarized, yet provideenough detail so I could glean an understanding of the style and relevanceof the resource. This work also contains background and explanatorymaterial that is useful for understanding the use and evaluation ofmulti-ethnic resources. For example, the Introduction section describescriteria for evaluation and the major concerns of evaluation (specifically, general accuracy, stereotypes, language, author's perspective, currency offacts and interpretation, audience, integration of cultural information, balance and multidimensionality, and illustrations). This material servesas a solid introduction to the need for and issues related to multi-ethnicbibliography. Additional context and background is provided for theethnic or national group covered in this work. For example, the openingpiece to the chapter on United States Native Americans describes thehistory, type and availability of resources for children and teenagers. I would include this resource in my collection. Its scope allowsflexible use to answer questions about both ethnic groups located in theUnited States and other countries. The list of contributors indicates asolid diversity of individuals and professional backgrounds. However, Icannot directly ascertain the ethnicity or ethnic experiences of thecontributors. The overall quality, completeness, breadth and depth ofthe citations is impressive. Given that Bowker is the publisher, I view thecontents with hopes of more accuracy and correctness than resources fromother publishers. However, I would still care to "spot check"several citations by a careful read of the original works. ... Read more |
