MARTIN LOCKLEY Carnivorous Dinosaur Footprint from Rovereto, Italy Among the common paleo questions such as "How did the dinosaurs die out?" and "Did they evolve into birds?" are the more deeply enticed questions, such as "Were dinosaurs social animals?" Nobody has taken more cracks at this question during the past two decades than University of Colorado paleontologist Martin Lockley. Lockley began his career as an Ordovician paleontologist, but soon became fascinated by dinosaur tracks. This fascination has led to a career that has, among other aspects, spanned from studying the only T. rex footprint to attempting to answer whether dinosaurs migrated to writing three popular books. This past summer I interviewed Dr. Lockley for my book project, and was amazed to learn so much about dinosaur social behavior and locomotion. Here are some of the highlights of my interview. Steve Brusatte: Dr. Lockley, were you into dinosaurs or paleontology as a child? Martin Lockley: No, I was not into dinosaurs at all. I was raised on a nature reserve and was always surrounded by animals. I became interested in paleontology when I got into college and a teacher passed along "the paleo bug" to me.

Extractions: Denman Island is a small island located just off the east coast of Vancouver Island, about half-way up. The rocks here are deep-water clastics of Late Cretaceous age, so this island is perhaps an unlikely place to establish a trilobite institute. But there is no shortage of fossil crabs and lobsters locally (I call them surrogate trilobites) and Carboniferous trilobites have recently been discovered onVancouver Island. Of course, easternmost British Columbia belongs to Laurentia, geological North America, and here Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian trilobites are common and well-preserved at many localities. DIRT Research In 1993, I helped to establish the British Columbia Paleontological Alliance as an umbrella group of amateur and professional paleontologists in regional societies in the province. I served as its Chair for the first four years. The Alliance has now over 200 members in six regional societies across the province. After leaving the University of Toronto for Denman Island, I established the Denman Institute for Research on Trilobites (DIRT) in 1989 as a "home" for my continuing work on trilobites and on fossils in general. A wide range of books on fossils and their meaning is available in libraries and bookstores. Some deal with broad themes, such as living fossils or mass extinctions. Others focus on the paleobiology, paleoecology, and evolution of various animal groups ammonites, trilobites or, the perennial favourites, dinosaurs.

Louisiana is the only state besides Florida that lies entirely within the Gulf Coastal Plain. It's bordered by Texas on the west, while the Mississippi River forms the border with Mississippi on the east. Arkansas borders Louisiana to the north. Hilly uplands in northern Louisiana are largely forested. Rich farmlands are located on the low, flat floodplains that border the Mississippi, Red, and Oucahita Rivers. Grassland prairies well suited to growing rice are found in southwest Louisiana. Louisianas state tree, the baldcypress, is most common in swampy coastal marshes that stretch along Louisianas Gulf Coast. The abundance of water in Louisiana is hinted at by its state tree, state bird (the pelican) and state reptile (alligator). As in neighboring Mississippi, "Bayou" is a common word in Louisiana. Early settlers called these slow-moving streams near the lower Mississippi River "sleeping water."

State Soil Connecticut Today... C onnecticut is a small state that borders Massachusetts on the south. Like Massachusetts, it was once known for its shipping industry. The important role whaling played in Connecticut history is recalled by its state animal, the sperm whale. New England's river, the Connecticut River, flows the Connecticut Valley, which stretches north into Massachusetts. Aside from the Connecticut Valley, Connecticut appears as an irregular rocky land with high hills here and there. Ice Age glaciers left hundreds of large and small lakes and ponds, along with waterfalls, rock ridges, and boulders. The direction glaciers traveled is indicated by drumlinslongish piles of rocks and gravels left behind by glaciers. The highest and most rugged part of Connecticut lies in the northwest corner, in the Taconic Mountains. Low ranges of hills extend along each side of the state.
