Board Minutes FAAST Overview FAAST began its existence in 1992 as a federally funded grant project and was housed with the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation . FAAST was designed to develop and implement a consumer responsive, comprehensive, statewide system of technology-related assistance and systems change for individuals from birth to death. In 1997, FAAST became a private not for profit corporation governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Commissioner of the Florida Department of Education . Fifty-one percent of the Board membership must be composed of persons with a disability or be a family member of a person with a disability. FAAST works with consumers, family members, caregivers, providers and agencies to ensure that individual's continue to benefit from assistive technology as they move between home, school, work and community. Florida ranks third in the United States for persons with disabilities. Over 70% of Florida's 1.4 million people with disabilities are underemployed or unemployed.
