To most seafood lovers, there appears to be an ever-growing abundance and variety of seafood in their favorite restaurants and in their local supermarket. Contrary to the perceptions of most consumers, however, fish and other seafood are a finite resource. Rising consumer demand here and abroad is depleting fishing stocks around the world. Currently, two-thirds of the world's major marine fisheries are already overfished, fully fished or depleted. Forty years ago that figure was less than 5%. Ironically, much of the fish caught never makes onto the dinner plate. Almost one-third of the total world catch–over 27 million metric tons–is made up of "untargeted" fish, marine mammals, sea turtles and seabirds that are caught unintentionally as the result of unselective fishing gear and practices. The vast majority of this "bycatch" is discarded, either dead or dying. Certain fishing practices also damage marine habitats vital to fisheries, marine life and coastal communities. Bottom trawling and dredging destroy the fragile sea floor habitats that serve as living, breeding and nursery areas for many marine species.

Coastline - The total length of the world's coastlines is about 504,000 km, enough to circle the Equator 12 times. The apparent length of a coastline depends on the scale (length of ruler) at which it is measured. The coastline appears longer as shorter rulers are used, because more small features are included. Canada has the longest coastline of any country. The 1996 Canadian Encyclopedia gives the length as 243,797 km, including the major island coastlines while the 1997 Guiness Book of Records gives a figure of 244,800 km, including the islands. Erosion - As coastal zones become more and more crowded, the quality of coastal water will suffer, the wildlife will be displaced, and the shorelines will erode. 60% of the Pacific and 35% of the Atlantic Coast shoreline are eroding at a rate of a meter every year.

Seagrass meadows, which support fish, shellfish, sea turtles, waterfowl, and manatees, are declining in most coastal regions of the United States. For example, overfishing removes species that feed on algae and that protect coral from being overtaken by the plants. Nutrient pollution kills the coral and species that live near the reef. In addition, diseases have wiped out reefs.

Throughout the past 40 million years they have adapted to the freezing conditions by developing a special 'antifreeze' component in their body fluids. The toothfish plays an important part in the Southern Ocean ecosystem around Antarctica. It grows slowly and to more than two metres long. It can live as long as 50 years and does not breed until it is at least 10 years old. It lives in deep waters (from 300 to 3,500 metres down) and is found on sea mounts and continental shelves around most sub-Antarctic islands. Like many deep-sea species, little is known about the Patagonian toothfish. It is known that it is part of the sperm whale's diet and scientists estimate that it comprises up to 98% of the elephant seal's fish diet.

Marine Life Protection Act Scientists believe that one important way to preserve biodiversity in the seas is to create networks of marine reserves where fishing is not allowed and pollution is minimized. Proposals for such a network in southern California's Channel Islands are now under discussion. These islands combine majestic underwater settings with an extraordinary diversity of marine life, nurtured by the complex intermingling of warm Baja currents with cold currents from Alaska. NRDC has helped persuade the California Fish and Game Commission to start a collaborative process to designate zones in the waters surrounding the islands where no fishing will be permitted. In the 1998 legislative session, NRDC helped usher through the legislature a bill to set up a network of marine protected areas, only to see it vetoed by former Governor Wilson. In the 1999 session, Assemblyman Kevin Shelley reintroduced the bill in the California Assembly as A.B. 993, the Marine Life Protection Act. The bill passed both the Assembly and the Senate with bipartisan support. With a new administration in California, a legislature lead by environmental supporters, and widespread support for efforts to ensure that fish and marine animals thrive, NRDC is optimistic that the Marine Life Protection Act has a good chance of becoming law in 1999. Nonetheless, as former Governor Wilson's veto demonstrates, the bill's passage into law is not guaranteed, so we continue our efforts to mobilize strong citizen support for marine reserves and for this legislation.

Ocean, or water, environments cause these animals to adapt (change to fit that environment). Underwater Dynamics (bodies in motion) Most fish are too heavy to float. Some sink to the ocean floor and live there. Other fish have a built-in swim-bladder (like a small gas filled ballon) inside. This helps them stay off the ground and up in the water. Still others, like sharks, must swim all the time to stay up, because they don't have a swim-bladder. It is difficult to swim through water. Water is thicker than air. Fast fish have a fusiform body (shaped like a torpedo or rocket). Some fish are flat on both sides (laterally compressed). They can easily swim around coral reefs. The fish living on the bottom of the ocean are flat - both top and bottom. This helps them glide along the bottom. Fast moving fish have special features. Besides being shaped like a torpedo they can pull in fins not in use to reduce drag. They may also have a slimy mucous layer (like oil) that helps them glide through the water. Or they may have special skin control to reduce drag. Fins Fins are found in many places on a fish's body. There are side fins, dorsal (top and bottom) and caudel (tail) fins. These fins move the fish forward, help with turns and keeping balance.
