    Extractions: Public Information: Feb. 10, 2003 AUSTIN, Texas Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's 5th annual, free Coastal Expos at Edinburg in March and Corpus Christi in April will bring Texas' coastal conservation issues to life when visitors get up-close and personal with crabs, fish, wetlands and beach habitats. Activities include touch tanks with a wide variety of live coastal animals such as sea urchins, sea squirts, crabs, sand dollars, fish and other sea life. Visitors learn about the animals' natural habitats and also how bugs can indicate pollution levels in water. Participants can also help solve a mystery fish kill and take part in fish printing, use paints to make images of coastal fish; identify beach objects by touch and learn about coastal issues through a variety of other fun and educational devices. Visitors to the Edinburg Coastal Expo can enjoy the tropical Valley by going birding at one of the world-class premier birding spots or experiencing the joys of kayaking. And at the Corpus Christi Coastal Expo, visitors can eat fresh fish, shrimp and crabs, as well as get close to other ocean life. More than 100 mammals depend on the ocean for most or all of their life needs. Marine mammals have all the characteristics of mammals, but they have different appearances and survival strategies. Within the order Carnivora are the pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walruses), the sea otter, and the polar bear. Polar bears are closely related to bears like the grizzly, but are considered marine mammals since they have adopted a marine lifestyle. The order Sirenia is composed of manatees and dugongs (or sea cows), and the order Cetacea includes whales, dolphins, and porpoises.

Prince William Sound Bathed by rich ocean currents and ringed by towering peaks, dense forests and sprawling glaciers, Prince William Sound contains an astounding diversity of marine life, including fish, whales, seals, and birds. But this was also the site of the infamous 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, which spread over 10,000 square miles and oiled over 1,500 miles of coastline, killing more marine mammals and birds than any other spill on record. Today, over 15 percent of the nation's oil is shipped through the central Sound, and 100 million pounds of fish are taken from its waters annually. Key Habitats An intricate mosaic of habitats lines 3,500 miles of craggy shoreline. Reefs, seastacks, mud flats, eelgrass beds, wetlands, pebble beaches and kelp forests-all support their own communities of life. The kelp forests are particularly critical, providing spawning habitat for herring, which in turn provide food for other fish and wildlife, as well as human communities ashore. Wildlife A refuge from the stormy Gulf of Alaska, the Sound shelters and sustains a staggering abundance and diversity of life, including many rare and endangered species. These waters teem with thousands of tons of small fish, including Pacific herring, capelin, and young walleye pollock-the "bread and butter" species of the Sound's food webs. Cod, rockfish, sablefish, squid and five kinds of salmon cruise the Sound's waters, while king and Dungeness crabs prowl the bottom. Vast beds of clams and scallops carpet the tide pools and seafloor.
