Richmond Field Hockey Club history Forms of hockey, perhaps one of the earliest stickand-ball Teams from Indiaand Pakistan have dominated olympic field hockey competition, but teams http://www.rfhc.ca/history/info.html
Extractions: The modern form of field hockey was first played in BC. In 1896, the first recorded match in Canada was played by Vancouver girls, and the Vancouver Ladies Club was formed. Men were also playing at the turn of the century in Vancouver and Victoria, and a Vancouver league was in existence in 1902. The first women's organization in Canada was formed in Vancouver in 1927. During the first half of the 20th century, field hockey was played on Vancouver Island and in the Vancouver area, and contests were recorded with teams from California and Australia in the 1930s. History Forms of hockey, perhaps one of the earliest stick-and-ball games, were played by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Arabs. Hurling, a sport similar to hockey, is known to have been played during the 1st millennium BC in Ireland, and similar sports were adopted by other Europeans in the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century). In pre-Columbian times (before the 16th century) Native South Americans also played similar sports. The name hockey, thought to have been adapted by the English from the French word hoquet (shepherd's crook), was first given to the sport in the 18th century, but was not in common usage until the 19th century. It is likely that a sport resembling modern field hockey was played in public schools in England early in the 19th century. By the 1880s the sport's popularity was becoming established, and women had begun to play. The first women's hockey club was founded in London in 1887. In 1924 the Fédération Internationale de Hockey (FIH, International Federation of Hockey) was founded as the governing body over the men's game, and in 1927 the International Federation of Women's Hockey Associations was established to govern the women's game. In 1982 the men's and women's games were united under the auspices of the FIH, which is located in Brussel, Belgium. By the 1990s the FIH had more than 100 member nations. The United States Field Hockey Association, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, governs the sport in the United States.

Extractions: International competition began in 1895 and men's field hockey first appeared in the Olympics in London (1908), then again in Antwerp (1920) and became a permanent fixture in the Games of 1928 in Amsterdam. The call for more international matches led to the introduction of the World Cup (1971) and some of the other major international tournaments include the Asian Cup, Asian Games, European Cup, and Pan-American Games. India is the most powerful field hockey nation in Olympic history - a fact which is not as unusual as one might think, since the sport there is comparable to what college football is to the state of Nebraska (people who follow American college football will understand this comparison). Between 1928 and 1956, India won six gold medals and 30 consecutive games. The streak ended in 1960 with a loss to Pakistan in the finals. So that you can get an idea of the major countries which participate in field hockey the following is a list of the nations which competed in the last olympics: Australia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Germany, South Africa, United States of America, Argentina, Spain, Korea, and Malaysia.

Extractions: Since arriving at Michigan State in 1993, 10th-year head coach Michele Madison has continually raised the level of expectations for the Spartan field hockey program on and off the field. Consider that in her tenure in East Lansing she has won more games than any other coach in the 30-year history of the program; her players have been named to various All-America teams nine times; she has coached two Big Ten Freshman of the Year performers; and MSU has been ranked in the top 25 at various times in each of the last eight years. Last year, Bridget Cooper earned second-team All-America honors, giving Madison an All-America performer in six of the last seven years. Cooper was also named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. In 2001, Madison led the Spartans to one of the best seasons in school history, leading the team to 16 wins, a share of the Big Ten regular season championship and the programs first berth in the NCAA Tournament. Her efforts, which included her third career trip to the NCAA Elite Eight, earned her Big Ten Coach of the Year honors and the Athletic Directors Award for Excellence at MSU. The Spartans reached as high as No. 3 in the national polls, and were ranked in the top 10 the entire season. Along with the All-America honors that Madisons players have earned, in the last six years Spartan players have also been awarded all-region honors 23 times and All-Big Ten kudos on 21 occasions.

Extractions: Missy Meharg could be thought of as a coach who has guided the Maryland field hockey program to two NCAA titles and six national semifinal appearances. She might be referred to as a leader who has won five Atlantic Coast Conference championships, directing the Terrapins to four straight titles from 1998-2001. She could be recognized as a motivator that has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2001. She might also be known as a mentor whose student-athletes have garnered 57 All-America citations on the field and 131 ACC academic honor roll awards outside the lines. Further, she could be seen as an instructor that has developed 35 players who have competed internationally or that four of her former players are currently playing at the highest level with the U.S. National Field Hockey team. Though Mehargs numbers are extraordinary, Marylands leader, now in her 15th season, is much more. As gifted an educator as she is a coach, Meharg recognizes the ability of athletic competition to teach life lessons. The mentor emphasizes the characteristics of sports that can be used as a vehicle to develop successful lifelong qualities. Empowering student-athletes to develop character traits that transcend athletic performance can shape the manner in which the athletes approach everyday life experiences, says Meharg. A successful life lends the opportunity to be a national champion. Keeping hockey fun keeps live more enjoyable.
Extractions: HOCKEY HISTORY Before the home run there was a ball and a stick. One of the oldest of competitive pastimes, the sport of field hockey dates back well before the Ancient Olympic Games. Although the exact origin of the game remains unknown, 4,000-year-old drawings found in the tomb at Beni-Hasen in the Nile Valley of Egypt depicted men playing the sport. Throughout the following centuries, variations of the game were played by a spectrum of cultures ranging from Greeks and Romans to Ethiopians and Aztecs. Hockey first appeared on the Olympic program at the 1908 London Games and again in 1920 at Antwerp. The sport was again featured on the program at Amsterdam in 1928 and has been an Olympic sport ever since. Women's hockey became a fixture on the Olympic program in Moscow in 1980.

Extractions: HISTORY Hockey has a very old history. From the obscurities of the primitive form in which it was played hundreds of years ago it passed through different stages to attain its present form. This very popular field game originated in Persia, though the persian game shows little resemblance to the hockey played today. A form of hockey was played in Britain. In America a stick game was played by the Indian tribes for 5 hundred years, the ball being usually made of wood or deer skin and the stick some times a dear leg. In Ireland, the game of Harley was a primitive type of hockey; as were shinty in Scotland and bandy in England and Wales. The modern game dates from the middle of the 19th century and it was taken up seriously by England. Gradually the game developed and from England it spread to other parts of the world. The combined India took a fancy to it and in a very short time it became very popular. The technique suited to the Indians and Pakistanis. Hockey was included for first time at the IV Olympic Games in London in 1908. Only six teams entered - the four United Kingdom countries besides France and Germany. The first-ever Olympic Hockey match was played on October 29, 1908 between Scotland and Germany. Scotland won 4-0 and the honour of scoring the first Olympic goal went to inside-left Ian Laning. England had a very strong team and won the gold medal.

Two athletes were sent to participate at the Fifth Olympiad in Stockholm the following year. The first 2 Japanese to participate as members of a Japanese team were Mishima Yahiko, a sprinter, and Kanaguri Shiro, a long-distance runner. By the 1920 Games at Antwerp, Japan had fielded a team of 15, and earned its first awards: a pair of silver medals in singles and doubles tennis. At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan took its first 2 gold medals, in track and field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue became the first woman to join a Japanese Olympic contingent. She received a silver medal in the 800-meter event, and her success encouraged more women to take up competitive sports. A contingent of 131 members represented Japan at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, including 16 women. Japanese athletes earned a total of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals in track and field, swimming, equestrian events, and field hockey.
