Extractions: Culture Micronesian societies are made up of clan groupings, with descent traced through the mother (except on Yap, where descent is patrilineal). The head clan on each island can trace its lineage back to the island's original settlers. Clan groupings extend across islands, and Micronesians usually pop in to visit other clan members when they're in the neighbourhood. Extended families are the norm, and most households include grandparents, cousins, children and adopted hangers-on. If one member of the household gets a good job, there's a fair chance the family will extend even further. Traditional dancing is important throughout Micronesia but is especially highly valued on Yap, the island most reluctant to adopt Western ways. The shuffling and the shaking is done in groups, with men and women dancing separately, and is often accompanied by unison chanting. Although most dancing takes place at private village events on Pohnpei, there are occasional performances for tourists. Western architecture has made substantial inroads, but you can still see a few examples of local building in Micronesia. Traditional community structures were constructed from planks of native mahogany with roofs of thatched nipa palm. Micronesia also has a strong tradition of canoe building. Some of the world's greatest early navigators came from the islands, using canoes much like the ones made today. The canoes have a single outrigger, and are generally made from a hollowed breadfruit tree. Larger ocean-going vessels are made of planks bound together with coconut husk fibres - some of these canoes are 100ft (30m) long.

Extractions: The island of Kosrae is the easternmost island in the Federated States of Micronesia. Kosrae is a 112 km volcanic island surrounded by well-developed coastal mangroves and a narrow fringing reef with no outer islands. The population is approximately 8,000; most depend on fishing and farming for their livelihood. Rapid population growth with greater than 50 percent of the population under 16 years of age Rapid infrastructure development occurring in the immediate coastal hinterland over the last 30 years (e.g., paved roadways, dock and airport facilities). This has led to the need for coastal defenses for protection and for land reclamation. Non-traditional use of coastal resources by landowners (e.g., switch from traditional thatched housing to concrete buildings) Overexploitation of natural resources Constitutional right of a shoreline landowner to reclaim abutting land on the foreshore or mangrove areas Dependence on foreign aid, notably US Compact funding that is decreasing and due to stop in 2001

Despite being firmly tied to the USA's economic and political apron strings, the Federated States of Micronesia are doggedly hanging onto their traditional ways - this is a country where men flaunt their loincloths and stone coins still have currency. The Micronesians are proud of their past, especially since they were navigating the Pacific before Columbus was a glint in Queen Isabella's eye. The laid-back islands have some of the world's best wreck diving, and are considered an untouristed haven for beach bunnies and scuba groovers. Full country name: Federated States of Micronesia

Extractions: Yap is located in the Western Carolines, about Midway between Guam and Palau. Yap is one volcanic complex made up of four islands plus eleven inhabited outer islands and atolls. The total land area of Yap State is 46 sq. miles. The first round of negotiations between Congress of Micronesia and the U.S. were held in 1969 to discuss the future political status of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which later became the Federated States of Micronesia. The Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia was signed in 1986. This contract outlined the security and economic agreements. In 1991, Micronesia was admitted as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. There are four traditional, distinct languages in Yap: Yapese, Ulitian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Yapese is the language spoken on Yap proper. The other languages are spoken in the outer islands. Words in Japanese, Spanish, German, and English are also woven into the language. Generally, Yapese youths speak English as their second language. Most elders speak Japanese as their second language. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many Yapese still wear traditional attire of loincloths or "thus" for the men and "grass skirts" or lava lavas for the women. "Thus" are generally made of red, white, or blue cloth. The grass skirts worn by Yapese women are not made of grass but of shredded leaves of ti, banana, betelnut, fragrant ginger, fern, and other leaves. Today, the western culture has influenced the Yap dress code and many Yapese are seen wearing shorts and t-shirts with name brand logos such as Nike. The more traditional ways of dressing are reserved for dance.
Extractions: Introduction Discussion References Field releases of mass reared larvae and adults of Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata were undertaken in Chromolaena odorata infested areas on Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap. Despite extensive releases made, the biological control agent became established and controlled the weed only in one area at Kosrae and one municipality at Pohopei. No establishment of P. pseudoinsulata occurred on Yap; possibly the number of mass-released larvae was not enough to start an infestation. The non-establishment of P. pseudoinsulata in other 4 municipalities of Pohnpei and 3 municipalities of Kosrae remained unexplainable, although it was suspected to be due to the presence of predaceous fauna in the release areas. The Siam weed, Chromolaena odorata (L.) R. M. King and H. Robinson, has been the primary target pest for biological control in Federation States of Micronesia (FSM) since 1989 (Esguerra et al., 1991). Through the Agricultural Development in the American Pacific (ADAP) project on Biological Control Agent Exchange, the Federated States of Micronesia was fortunate to receive the biological control agent, Pareuchaetes pseudoinsulata Rego Barros, from Guam. The biological control agent became known to us because of its successful control of the weed in Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands and Guam.

Extractions: Features Lowland forest, Pohnpei Pohnpei has been the focus of The Nature Conservancy's work in the Federated States of Micronesia for the last nine years. The island's traditional culture, dating back more than 2,000 years, is intimately connected with stewardship of the land and sea. Through the ages, Pohnpeians have honored the sharp distinction between nanwel , spirit-inhabited inland forests that are essentially off-limits to human use, and nansapw , land converted to human use with the sanction of traditional authority. However, as the outside world has influenced the island state, traditional authority restricting the use of forests has weakened considerably. Fortunately, the Salapwuk Valley, revered as the "home of the first Pohnpeians," appears to be a unique exception. A 3,200-acre volcanic bowl near the island's center, the Salapwuk Valley is the largest intact lowland tropical forest in the north Pacific outside of Hawaii. The entire valley is covered by unbroken native forests, including broadleaf and palm forests in the lower areas, and cloud forest at higher altitudes. Nearly all of Pohnpei's some 120 endemic plant, bird and fish species make it their home. An intact forest valley such as this is extremely rare in the small islands of the Pacific making it of particular conservation significance to the island and the entire region.
