    Extractions: The first Father's Day was observed in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd or Washington first proposed the idea of a "Father's Day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, who was widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself. Mrs. Dodd wanted Father's Day to be celebrated on the first Sunday in June, her father's birthday. However, the Spokane council couldn't get the resolution through the first reading until the third Sunday in June. Over the next decade, cities across America began celebrating a day for fathers and in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. It wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. This came almost sixty years after Mother's Day had been proclaimed a National day of observance. Interesting

Even more memorable are emotions, such as the joy of knowing that he beamed with pride at your latest accomplishment or the opposite, crushing feeling of knowing you had disappointed him. Fathers hold a place in their children's hearts that, for better or worse, cannot be filled by anyone else. You are that person now. You have that great power and responsibility, that opportunity to make a significant difference. You will never again have an opportunity to do so much good or disappoint so bitterly. The responsibility of caring for children and providing financially for them can be a tremendous burden in today's fast-paced world. It is easy to get so caught up in the struggle to "provide", that the daily nurturing that children want and need from their fathers falls by the wayside. Chances are both you and your child's mother work long hours, rush to get home in time for dinner (at least a couple of nights a week) and too often feel irritated by the demands of children and household. Many parents say that because of the long hours away from their children, they are reluctant to set too many limits. As a result, many describe their children as becoming increasingly demanding or out of control. This can contribute to a chaotic environment at home, in which it is difficult to provide the love and nurturing that you intend to provide.

Klein at Pacific Unitarian Church, Rancho Palos Verdes, California on June 17, 2000 I have lots of good memories of time spent with my father and I also have enjoyed being a father (most of the time), so it was without much thought or hesitation that I put on the sermon schedule a sermon for Fathers Day. I thought I might share with you a few thoughts on the benefits and detriments of fathers and fatherhood and then offer you an opportunity to share some of your own memories about your fathers and thoughts about fatherhood. My dad had trouble with his back and so he wasn’t able to do a lot of the games and physical things with my brother and me that some dads do. Dad was always willing to teach us how to use tools, play card and box games, and spend time with us. My dad was a very gentle and loving man who enjoyed being a dad. He was an artist and photographer as well as being a good supporter of the family as a civil engineer. My father started me on my interests of photography and model railroading, and encouraged me when I started to use tools to build things. Most of all, my father gave me a wonderful model for listening to people, respecting others even when I might not agree with them, and valuing people generally. He also modeled some skills in partnering with my mother that I have found helpful (I probably also picked up a few patterns from him that weren’t as helpful). In general I had a very good relationship with my dad even though I probably talked more with my mother. When my dad died, nine years ago, my only regret was that we didn’t have more time to spend together and that he did not get to see his grandkids, whom he loved, graduate.
