As an employee benefit, these employer paid medical expenses are not considered taxable income to the employee. These features may encourage businesses to employ an owners spouse to save taxes. There are several advantages to a self-employed farmer or other business to write off the entire medical insurance and out-of-pocket medical expenses on Schedule F or C as an employee fringe benefit. First, the employer can deduct the full expense rather than only 60% of the health insurance when using the self-employed health insurance deduction on page 1 of the 1040. Second, if these expenses would be taken as itemized deductions, they would be subject to the 7.5% of income limitation that is imposed on medical expenses. Third, deducting these expenses on Schedule F or C decreases self-employment tax. Further, medical expenses paid by the employer are tax free to the employee. Of course, if you are deducting the medical expenses for your spouse/employee, you will want to specify that it is coverage for his/her entire family. Therefore, you, as the employer, are covered under your spouses medical plan.

Participants from different sides of the country and with very different types of businesses were able to share and learn with each other. Notes conference organizer Sarah L. Fogelman, an extension agricultural economist at Kansas State University, "Judging from the attendance from over the last two years and the amazing feedback we have received from conference participants, it is safe to say that this conference is addressing a need that is universal and growing." Of the 70 conference evaluations received, 61 attendees wanted to see this conference repeated and 66 thought the value (quality and quantity of information) received outweighed total costs of time, travel, lodging, and fees.
