Büchner is the forerunner of expression, followed by Wedekind and Strindberg. The style is then traced from Kaiser and Toller to O'Neill, Wilder and the later O'Casey. Important producers are Reinhardt and Meyerhold. Epic theatre is studied from Piscator and Brecht to Dürrenmatt and Weiss, Arden and Bond, and is seen as flourishing in the more recent offshoots of documentary theatre. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! 20th century classical music was extremely varied and thusthere was no dominant style. However, a salient featureduring this classical music time period was the increaseduse of dissonance. Because of this, the 20th century issometimes called the "Dissonant Period" of classical music, because much of its music was a reaction to or against thecommon practice period, which emphasized consonance(Schwartz and Godfrey 1993, 9?43). The International ParisExposition celebrating the centennial of the FrenchRevolution in 1889 is referred to by one writer as thewatershed transitional moment from consonance to dissonance(Fauser 2005). At the turn of the century, music wascharacteristically late Romantic in style, while at thesame time the Impressionist movement, spearheaded by ClaudeDebussy, was being developed in France. America also begandeveloping its own vernacular style of classical music, notably in the works of Charles Ives, John Alden Carpenter, and (later) George Gershwin, while in Vienna, ArnoldSchoenberg conceived atonality and later developed thetwelve-tone technique. ... Product Description
"You want beauty? I’ll give you beauty!"
—Mary Heilmann

Mary Heilmann is one of the most important abstract painters of her generation. Her distinctively fluid, humorous, and bright canvases combine the modes of Abstract Expressionism with a vibrant Pop sensibility. Heilmannn's 1979 painting in hot pink and black, evocatively titled Save the Last Dance for Me, marked a shift in the artist's perspective. Heilmann describes it: "Now the work came from a different place. Instead of working out of modernist non-image formalism, I began to see that the choices in the work depended more on content for their meaning." This beautifully illustrated study of Save the Last Dance for Me explores the development of Heilmann's work, and the way it continues to engage us—psychologically, sensually, and socially.

The three bright pink rectangles in Heilmann's painting seem to dance off the edge of the canvas, through a black field that seems dark as a nightclub after midnight—or perhaps the three are actually one pink rectangle, seen in a blissfully formal time lapse, moving across the dance floor/canvas. These definitively modernist geometric forms coexist with a sense of movement in real time. For many, abstraction may have been dancing its last dance in 1979, but Heilmann's bright pink rectangles boogie on.

Mary Heilmann was born in San Francisco and has lived and worked in New York since 1968. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
-perfectly conceived and perfectly executed. -a good read and a very well-made hardcover book. The same is true of the whole series: (One Work) by Afterall Books.

5-0 out of 5 stars fresh!
Myers manages to convey some heavy ideas in a lighthearted style. Being accessible and smart at the same time is no small accomplishment (especially in the field of art criticism!). Myers examines Heilmann's painting from many angles - through formal analysis, musical associations, biography, cultural context, etc. This multi-faceted approach gives the reader a variety of inroads to the feel of Heilmann's painting.

This book is fun to read because Myers attempts to float ideas rather then pin them onto the page. His approach doesn't just describe the work of Heilmann but also reflects its active qualities. No wonder that dancing, playing, and mirroring are some of the major thematic elements.

If you're looking for an introduction to the work of Heilmann this book would be a great place to start. But it also offers a refreshing approach for the seasoned reader of painting critique. ... Read more

Product Description
Although often dismissed as a minor offshoot of the better-known German movement, expressionism on the American stage represents a critical phase in the development of American dramatic modernism. Situating expressionism within the context of early twentieth-century American culture, Walker demonstrates how playwrights who wrote in this mode were responding both to new communications technologies and to the perceived threat they posed to the embodied act of meaning. At a time when mute bodies gesticulated on the silver screen, ghostly voices emanated from tin horns, and inked words stamped out the personality of the hand that composed them, expressionist playwrights began to represent these new cultural experiences by disarticulating the theatrical languages of bodies, voices and words. In doing so, they not only innovated a new dramatic form, but redefined playwriting from a theatrical craft to a literary art form, heralding the birth of American dramatic modernism. ... Read more

Product Description
Jackson Pollock, the great American artist who revolutionized twentieth-century art with his canvases of dripping paint, was one of five sons from Cody, Wyoming, who grew up in the period from the
late 1920s to the late 1940s, during the Great Depression and the Second World War. Jackson and his brothers and parents were often apart, travelling for work, for study, or just for the sake of travelling.
But they kept in touch by writing letters Ð a constant flow of correspondence that offers not only a valuable insight into the formation of one of America’s most influential artists but also a unique portrait of America itself during one of the most momentous periods of its history.

These letters, most of which are published in this volume for the first time, show that the Pollock children took an early interest in two major themes: politics and art. Their interest in painting was stimulated by Thomas Hart Benton, who taught at the New York Art
Students League and who infected them with his passion and commitment. Jackson’s older brother Charles was most strongly influenced by Benton’s left-wing beliefs, and most determined to bring art and politics together. Jackson himself was less focused and
more complex; he had pronounced mystical leanings and, while he searched for his own way to express his artistic ambitions, he enjoyed life, hitting the open road, jumping from train to train, finding himself thrown out of school and even ending up in prison for a
while, all the time writing about his experiences and his feelings in his letters.

This remarkable volume of correspondence will be enjoyed by anyone interested in Jackson Pollock and modern art, as well as anyone interested in twentieth-century America. The volume includes original works of art by Charles Pollock and an Introduction by Michael Leja, an expert on abstract expressionism and the work of Jackson Pollock. ... Read more

Product Description
Musicians and artists have always shared mutual interests and exchanged theories of art and creativity. This exchange climaxed just after World War II, when a group of New York-based musicians, including John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and David Tudor, formed friendships with a group of painters. The latter group, now known collectively as either the New York School or the Abstract Expressionists, included Jackson Pollock, Willem deKooning, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, Franz Kline, Phillip Guston, and William Baziotes. The group also included a younger generation of artists-particularly Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns-that stood somewhat apart from the Abstract Expressionists. This group of painters created what is arguably the first significant American movement in the visual arts. Inspired by the artists, the New York School composers accomplished a similar feat. By the beginning of the 1960s, the New York Schools of art and music had assumed a position of leadership in the world of art. For anyone interested in the development of 20th century art, music, and culture, The New York Schools of Music and Art will make for illuminating reading. ... Read more

Product Description
German Expressionist Theatre considers the powerfully stylized, antirealistic styles of symbolic acting on the German Expressionist stage from 1916 to 1921. It relates this striking departure from the dominant European acting tradition of realism to the specific cultural crises that enveloped the German nation during the course of its involvement in World War I. The examination of portions of previously untranslated Expressionist scripts and actor memoirs allows for an unprecedented focus on description and analysis of the acting itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly researched and informative book
Prof. Kuhns is evidently a brilliant scholar, and he has done an especially fine job of describing the actual practices of the directors and actors of the early 20th-century theatrical movement called Expressionism. And I admired his final observations on what the movement bequeathed to Brecht -- so much so that I hope he will go forward and give us the as-yet unwritten, in-depth study of Brecht's actual stage practice. There are times when this author succumbs to fashionable scholarly jargon and others when he neglects to sketch adequately the social and historical moment. But I found plenty to absorb in this meaty study. ... Read more
