Editorial Review

Product Description
Drawing on 20 years of experience, Sam Ham presents an unusually diverse collection of low-cost communication techniques that really work. Aside from its step-by-step, 'how-to' approach, the book is set apart by its solid theoretical foundation. Readers learn not only how to communicate their ideas more forcefully, but why the methods work.

More than 200 illustrations, photos, and technical insets provide simple instructions for designing and implementing effective education programs in forests, parks, protected areas, zoos, botanical gardens, extension and community programs, & in all kinds of agriculture & natural resource management programs.

Some 20 case studies, carefully selected from throughout the Western Hemisphere, stimulate the imagination & show how others have successfully applied what this book is about-environmental interpretation. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This is a pretty good book, but if I had to have only one on hand for interpretation this would not be it. I appreciated a lot of the information-especially the case studies of what other people have done, but the slide shows info. and making interp. signs seemed outdated or unrealistic.

Conductiong Meaningful Interpretation was/is a much better book in my opinion, but this is an interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'Must Have' for Interpreters
This fun-to-read, chock-full of useful ideas book should be in any Interpreter's library. In fact, if I could only buy one book for my interpretive library, this would be it.Several rangers I know (inc. myself) refer to this book as 'the Bible'.This was the book I chose for the required textbook for the Interpretive training course for docents at the Desert Botanical Garden. The chapters are concise and full of examples of interpretive theory IN ACTION.Lots of whimsical pictures to illustrate main points-- but don't think just because it has pictures that it is full of fluff. It's a reference book you will pick up again and again to review interpretive techniques.Definitely a 'how-to', hands-on book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully dense and balanced textbook
This textbook teaches modern and relevant information on environmental science, with very well organized and dense English lessons skillfully integrated. For example, the chapter on recycling includes a staged listening activity that presents useful information while providing practice in note-taking, hearing and using introductory and connecting phrases in speeches, pronunciation (British), and expression organization. It's challenging and fun for the students.I'm not sure I've ever taught out of a textbook before where the teacher's guide was a useful reference; that this one leads you through a successful lesson is a testament to the forethought that the authors put into each lesson. ... This book is a rigorous, yet accessible introduction into the current philosophical discourses underpinning practices of environmental education. It provides a comprehensive theoretical framework, relating philosophical key issues and educational concerns in an intrinsic manner, against the background of current practices and policies. While the issues discussed are complex and abstract, the book is readable for a general audience.

Product Description
Environmental Biotechnology discusses the development, use, and regulation of biological systems for remediation of contaminated environments and for environment friendly processes.

The book begins with a definition of relevant terms, a discussion of different types of pollution and wastes and goes on to provide exhaustive coverage of the treatment of liquid and solid wastes, economic and social aspects of waste treatment, and the analytical methods for environmental monitoring. The book also includes a separate chapter on the stoichiometry and reaction kinetics essentail for the design of bioreactors. This book concludes with a case study of the design and economic evaluation of an integrated biogas plant for a dairy farm.

Written in a lucid style, the book should be useful to students of both engineering and bioscience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR INVOLVING CHILDREN IN THE ENVIRONMENT
Firstly, I would like to say, contrary to what is written elsewhere on this page, that this book is not meant to be read by children between the ages of 9 and 12. It is, in fact, recommended for environmental NGOs,policy makers, teachers, youth workers and community leaders who work withchildren.

This book was commissioned by UNICEF to further growingconcerns of global importance: the environment, sustainable development andchildren's rights. All over world, children are becoming enthusiasticallyinvolved in environmental issues. While the child is defined as any personunder 18 years of age, the focus of this book is on childhood and earlyadolescence to about 14 years, rather than upon the older teenage years.

Roger Hart is convinced that all children can play a central and lastingrole in sustainable development if their genuine participation is takenseriously and if communities recognize their developing competencies andunique strengths. Using detailed case studies from urban and rural, poorand middle-class communities in both the developed and developing worlds, and including photos, figures, tables and boxes, this guide introduces theorganising principles, successful models, practical techniques andresources for involving children in environmental projects, with usefulfurther reading and contact addresses.

Roger Hart is Director of theChildren's Environments Research Group at the City University of New Yorkand Editor of Children's Environments.

Product Description
This collection explores a wide variety of questions, both of a theoretical and a practical nature, raised by teaching environmental ethics. The essays consider general issues such as the place of environmental advocacy in the environmental ethics classroom; using outdoor environments to prompt reflection on environmental ethics; and handling student responses – such as pessimism – that may emerge from teaching environmental ethics. The essays also consider practical issues, including successfully teaching environmental ethics to students without a background in philosophy; promoting the development of interdisciplinarity; useful ways to structure syllabi; and teaching and learning techniques. This book will be particularly useful to anyone teaching environmental ethics or environmental studies, or interested in the theoretical issues that teaching environmental ethics raises. ... These proceedings discuss the five environmental problems requiring urgent engineering solutions: efficient use of energy sources; safe disposal of waste; recovery and recycling of materials; repair of existing damage; and environmentally sound design of future technology. These factors have produced pressure on industry, both by legislation and public concern, and on engineering and other educators, to develop course curricula to include environmental issues in programmes of study. ... Product Description
This directory provides an in-depth listing of potential donors for project and proposal developments. This is especially important considering that many students, organisations and individuals, especially in Africa, still lack adequate information on potential donor organisations to support their projects and career developments. Due to this problem, many good ideas with a high potential of contributing useful information for environmental conservation and development actions fail to get support from potential donors, either through lack of information or because of the type of approach strategies adopted. This directory will better help project and proposal developers to acquire information about donors that is necessary to target project ideas, determine a potential donor's interest in supporting or investing in a project, and eliminate donors whose missions and objectives do not match particular programmes. Once a match is made, this directory will also help to tailor project ideas to the specific requirements and interests of the donors. ... Read more
