3-0 out of 5 stars Not for novices!
I bought this book, like the title says, to teach myself everything I needed to know about Microsoft Windows XP in 21 days. As a novice, I quickly discovered that it would take me quite a bit longer to grasp most of the concepts in this book, because a certain level of understanding, especially vocabulary, is assumed by the author. I simply didn't understand most of it. It is probably a good book for advanced users, but with my limited knowledge of computers, I really could not say. In fact, since it is too advanced for me, I am going to give the book to a computer expert as a gift. The book is 746 pages long and has complete chapters about subjects which I have never heard of.The author himself says that this book is for intermediate and advanced users. I would recommend going to a book store to really check out a computer reference book this this before ordering it online. That might save you some disappointment and money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Many of the books on the market today are cutesy and lack the content that someone who needs an answer now demands. This book contains a lot of hands on information. So far, I haven't run into a situation where I needed help and this book couldn't provide it. I usually don't have more than five minutes to find an answer to questions, so most of the books I've tried don't come close to helping me. The organization of this book makes it a snap to find any answer. If you want a no nonsense answer to your questions fast, this is the book to get. Make sure you contact the author too. I saw his message asking for reader input and thought he'd ignore me like other authors do. This guy is serious--he really does want to hear from you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative
Although I have used many flavors of Windows in both business and at home, Windows XP offers many new features. This book glides the reader through all aspects of the operating system with just the right amount of detail without otherwhelming you.I found the book to be very useful and have referred to it many times. The author is very knowledge of the entire suite of features built into Windows XP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Informative and User -Friendly
I learned more about a Windows operating system in a week with this book than I learned since I first used Windows 3.1 up thru last week. I'm a home user now, but this book will teach and inform users from home PC novices to office professionals. It covers both the Home and Professional Editions, and if you don't need the latter, it's easily skipped. Full of helpful tips and warnings when you might get into dangerous waters. Wish I'd have had a manual like this when I was an office administrator. One of the best computer manuals I've used!

5-0 out of 5 stars good Windows XP info book
This is a great example of a book that can be used quickly and efficiently. The author is obviously very experienced with every aspect of windows, and covers each element, then offers experience advice on how to better utilize the feature. highly recommended. ... Read more

The two small applications the author leads you in building will get you moderately comfortable with the Delphi environment.

But the book is more notable for what it leaves out than what it includes. If you're looking for how to work with such common Windows components as list and combo boxes, text boxes, check boxes, scroll bars, etc.; or how to code Pascal (the programming language on which Delphi is based), you won't find it here.Check this book out of the library if you can--but save your money for a more comprehensive one. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars reliable reference
Perry's book is heftier than the typical offering from the Sams Teach Yourself series. He is attempting to cover a lot of ground here. Firstly, by explaining how to use Microsoft Windows XP for various tasks, primarily in a standalone mode. Mundane but important details like how to setup a network in your home, or office, for that matter. And how to react to hardware problems. Notice I don't say "repair". Because nowadays, it's simply not economic for anyone to repair most broken hardware.

But perhaps the main thrust of the book is in the interaction of you and your computer with the rest of the Internet. Email and surfing the Web, naturally. For these, computer security has become a huge problem, as spam, viruses and other malware have proliferated. These tend to target XP because of its predominance. (Linux and Mac users often get a free pass.) So Perry goes into some detail about countermeasures or precautions that you can and should do.

It should be said that you won't need to read all of the book. It's well suited as a reference. Just refer to what you need.

Broadly, the book is certainly optimistic in terms of how you can benefit from XP. Just take certain precautions! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful book which delivers on its promise
The book somewhat delivered on its promise back when it was still called WinCE (I'm pretty sure this book won't work for post 2.0 WinCE versions). Unfortunately, at the time I had to fork out $1k for a development platform which would allow me to compile some code for my WinCE machines. This is ridiculous. Why should I pay for the privilage of developing on Microsoft's platform? In the end, I came to the conclusion that Windows CE itself is pretty worthless. Too many drawbacks, and there isn't much point in it with out a better UI stuck on it. Presumably later versions have found a niche as background OS for PalmOS, and for fancy cell phones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, wrong examples - Pay Attention!
I bought this book not knowing a lick of Win32 API programming, so I had to take a crash course in Win32 programming first, as the book starts off assuming you know the API.Thankfully, it leaves MFC and ATL to the lastchapter and focuses solely on C and the API.

One problem I had with thebook is that the examples in the text are often quite wrong in terms ofnumber/use of parameters, and leave out some details that can bemisleading.Besides the examples, the text has frequent misleadinginformation (p.44: "First you can call the CommandBar_InsertButton()function..." Later on the same page: "The other function you canuse to add buttons is the CommandBar_InsertButton() function..." - thefirst quote should have said CommandBar_AddButton())

If you are payingattention and following the book closely, you will weed out theseinconsistencies, though, and should come out of it with respectableknowledge of CE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Non beginners book
If you are an absolute beginner in Windows CE programming you will not find answers to your questions in it. You need a lot of skills to read it through. Sample code is excellent: very short, useful and IT WORKS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general WinCE book - authors are well-respected
    Chapter Headings:

    1. Getting Started with Visual C++ for Windows CE 2. What's Different about Windows CE? 3. Building User Interfaces - Command Bars and Bands 4. Using the HTML Viewer 5. Communicating with the Desktop 21. CreatingActiveSync Modules 22. The Cure for the Common Crash 23. Debugging WindowsCE Applications with VisualC++ 24. Advanced Topics: MFC, ATL andPOOM

This is a generally good introductory book on Windows CEprogramming. It does not try to teach you C, Windows and Windows CEprogramming all at the same time, rather it concentrates on the differencesbetween Windows CE and other versions of Windows. The book was written bythree well-respected BSQUARE employees; BSQUARE is one of the leadingWindows CE development and porting companies.

Several of the chapterscover topics specific to Windows CE, such as command bands and bars.Sincethe Microsoft documentation for these controls is somewhat lacking, this isvery useful.Other chapters cover areas which are common to both WindowsCE and Windows 95/98/NT but nonetheless do a good job of pointing the areaswhere Windows CE differs.

Probably because the book was written by threeauthors rather than one it doesn't flow quite as well from one chapter tothe next quite as smoothly as other books of this type. Each topic is,though, covered well. There are some strange omissions, however, such asvery little discussion on Unicode.Readers would be well advised to alsoobtain Richter's excellent Advanced Windows for a comprehensive discussionon Unicode (and many other) topics.

A very useful chapter discusses howto get your program installed using the Windows CE Services (now calledActiveSync) Application Manager.Since coverage of this topic is woefullylacking in the Microsoft documentation, this information alone might beworth the price of the book.

All of the examples in the book are instraight C.C++ is not used at all while MFC and ATL are just touched onin the last section. The included CD-ROM contains the book's source codeand evaluation copies of bSQUARE's bUSEFUL and bPRODUCTIVE applicationsuites.

At $24.95 cover price (may be less on Amazon.com) and about 450pages this book is a welcome relief from the trend these days of $50-$801000 page monsters.

Learn to take maximum advantage of WSH to automate routine tasks, create powerful macros how to manage user in remote locations. This book not only teaches how to implement WSH successfully with either JScript or VB Script, it also provides dozens of useful script examples that the reader will be able to apply immediately.Amazon.com Review
Thomas Fredell hits a home run with Teach Yourself WindowsScripting Host in 21 Days. This book tells you what you need toknow to build valuable utilities with the Windows Script Host (WSH,formerly the Windows Scripting Host). He explains the WSH objectmodel, how to write programs with it, and how to run thoseprograms. The material on VBScript and JScript won't teach you thelanguages, but it provides enough information to clarify structure, syntax, and other basics for programmers who work with many languagesat once.

The best parts of this book are the examples, writtenusing an even mix of JScript and VBScript. Fredell provides explicit(and adaptable) programs that show how to use the WSH with MicrosoftOffice, Internet Information Server (IIS), and SQL Server, as well asfor user administration tasks in Windows 98 and Windows NT 4. The bookgoes into great depth on the relationship between the WSH and ActiveXData Objects (ADO)--a powerful connection that's not possible tosimulate with shell scripting. The inclusion of scripts thatmanipulate Active Directory file systems will wow Windows 2000 users(and those who plan to be). --David Wall

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starting book
I have read this books (majority of chapters) and found this books gives a good overview of the WSH. I think it is good starting book. I recommend to do a cursory read on this book and get more specialized books on specific topics.

Check also the Microsoft website for good presentation on WSH...
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/webcasts/archive.mspx

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good purchase!
For a programmer who has used VB, Java, or any ASP, this book will boost your skills incredibly with a minimal learning curve. It shows the basics of the WSH objects and an overview of VBScript and JScript within the first few chapters- it is worth buying the book just for those chapters alone.

If you are not familiar yet with the concepts of OOP and looking at object models, you might need a primer found in another book before looking into WSH.It is built purely on objects that your code will refence and it can be a bear to take on unprepared.

It will be interesting to see how the .Net framework will integrate the objects in WSH- there is a significant chance that little in this book will be completely valid after Windows XP and Visual Studio .Net have become standard.Nevertheless, this book is an invaluable tool to the Windows programmer who wants to simplify life by automating as many tasks as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is a great intro to Windows Script Host. A definate must-have for scripting newbies.

Some reviewers here complain some of the scripts dont work, but that's because WSH has been updated since then. After you purchase the book, you can download the scripts from the author's website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good learning tool - but you really have to want it
The biggest problem with the WSH and VBScript is that it is marketed as being a powerful but simple "macro" language. Nothing could be further from the truth. VBScript is essentially VB without the forms and graphics. VBScript is just as powerful, has the same controlling capabilities, and uses almost all the same commands and syntax as VB. To think of writing scripts for the WSH as anything less than programming is a mistake.

When I first got this book, I read a ways into it, decided I didn't have the time or energy to go on, and put it aside. Had I written a review at that point, it would not have been favorable. Then I learned more about the WSH, what it was and what my expectations should be, what a person could do with it - and I picked it back up, and really applied myself. And apply yourself you must for this book. The first 154 pages of this 600 page book teach you the syntax and structure of VBScript (and some JScript). It's a little dry, and easy to get lost in. But once you have that down, the rest of the book can really open things up and show you quite a bit.

Besides an introduction to the language, the book covers "upgrading" your old batch files, writing logon scripts for users, automating network tasks, SQL server, IIS server, as well as showing you how to use ActiveX objects for the file system, CDO, ADO (Database), etc. The book even goes so far as to touch on ADSI scripting for Windows NT and Windows 200 Active Directory.

Even though at this point in time the book is a little out-dated (written in the Windows NT 4 time), it is still a good learning tool. Not so unlike other "... in 21 days" books, the average person won't complete the book in that time, and you learn just as much correcting the errors in the code and doing the workshop material as you do from the actual guided lessons. If you're looking for a scripting solution that is quick and easy, WSH and VBScript isn't it, and neither is this book. If you're looking for a powerful automation tool for network and services automation, and you're willing to spend the time it will take to complete this book, then this could be the title for you. ... Product Description

Scientific evidence has made it abundantly clear that the world's population can no longer continue its present rate of consuming and despoiling the planet's limited natural resources. Scholars, activists, politicians, and citizens worldwide are promoting the idea of sustainability, or systems and practices of living that allow a community to maintain itself indefinitely.Despite increased interest in sustainability, its popularity alone is insufficient to shift our culture and society toward more stable practices. Gary Holthaus argues that sustainability is achievable but is less a set of practices than the result of a healthy worldview. Learning Native Wisdom: Reflections on Subsistence, Sustainability, and Spirituality examines several facets of societies -- cultural, economic, agricultural, and political -- seeking insights into the ability of some societies to remain vibrant for thousands of years, even in extremely adverse conditions and climates. Holthaus looks to Eskimo and other Native American peoples of Alaska for the practical wisdom behind this way of living.Learning Native Wisdom explains why achieving a sustainable culture is more important than any other challenge we face today. Although there are many measures of a society's progress, Holthaus warns that only a shift away from our current culture of short-term abundance, founded on a belief in infinite economic growth, will represent true advancement. In societies that value the longevity of people, culture, and the environment, subsistence and spirituality soon become closely allied with sustainability.Holthaus highlights the importance of language as a reflection of shared cultural values, and he shows how our understanding of the very word subsistence illustrates his argument. In a culture of abundance, the term implies deprivation and insecurity. However, as Holthaus reminds us, "All cultures are subsistence cultures." Our post-Enlightenment consumer-based societies obscure or even deny our absolute dependence on soil, air, sunlight, and water for survival. This book identifies spirituality as a key component of meaningful cultural change, a concept that Holthaus defines as the recognition of the invisible connections between people, their neighbors, and their surroundings. For generations, native cultures celebrated and revered these connections, fostering a respect for past, present, and future generations and for the earth itself.Ultimately, Holthaus illustrates how spirituality and the concept of subsistence can act as powerful guiding forces on the path to global sustainability. He examines the perceptions of cultures far more successful at long-term survival than our own and describes how we might use their wisdom to overcome the sustainability crisis currently facing humanity.

Got what I ordered on time in the condition I expected at a reasonable price.THANKS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!
I have wanted to learn WF for quite a while now and this book has been an incredible asset for me.I am currently running through Hour 5 and am hungry to plow through the remainder of the material.

The labs I have seen so far have been very instructive and the pace has been perfect - neither overly simplified nor overly complex.

I only have two complaints and they are very minor complaints. The first is that I have encountered numerous typos in the text and in the samples, including the URL of the authors WWW site where the samples must be downloaded from. The second is the lack of a glossary.Acronyms are tossed about which are pretty new to me such as BPMS, BAL, BPM, and BAM.While not critical to learning the material, it sure would be nice if I could flip to a glossary to refresh my memory as to the meaning of these acronyms from time to time.

Overall I give this book, and the author, two thumbs up.This book has been instrumental for me in learning Windows Workflow Foundation and this will be one of the few Teach Yourself-style books that I anticipate reading cover-to-cover..

    Product Description
Should anti-war protestors use graphic images to get public support for their cause, or will such images turn the public off? In encouraging the public to adopt sustainable behaviors, should environmental organizations ask for small changes like using fluorescent light bulbs or big changes like giving up cars? Why do most Americans say they oppose the cruel practices of factory farms and sweatshops yet still buy products from these places? And how can non-profits get more people to say yes to their requests to volunteer, donate, recycle, write a letter to a political prisoner, support gay rights, go vegetarian, conserve energy or make other positive changes?

Scientific research has generated a wealth of information on how people can be persuaded to alter their behaviors, yet this body of knowledge has been largely ignored by those working to improve society. Change of Heart: What Psychology Can Teach Us About Spreading Social Change brings this information to light so that non-profits, community organizers and others can make science-driven decisions in their advocacy work. The book examines over 80 years of empirical research in areas including social psychology, communication studies, diffusion studies, network systems and social marketing, distilling the highlights into easy-to-use advice and serving as a psychology primer for anyone wanting to spread progressive social change. ... From the supplier: A digital video system is being developed and used to teach college physics, including digital video technology from VideoLogic Inc and M.I.C. System software. The DVA-4000 digital video board enables students to interact with a lesson, including full-motion video in a desktop environment. Simultaneously, video images are mixed with graphics and text, with classical physics demonstrations shown to the student, such as an apple falling from a tree. Students typically watch a full-motion video within a window, and then do a follow-up exercise on-screen, such as graphing the fall of the apple. This digital video technology is being incorporated in the Comprehensive Unified Physics Learning Environment project headed by educators at the University of Maryland and other institutions.
