2-0 out of 5 stars Good overview to DNA, but disappointing examples/exercises
This book starts out with some good overview chapters of Windows DNA-- relating all the various technologies (SQL Server, Visual Basic COM, MTS, ADO, ASP, and DHTML) in an easy-to-read way.It also promises to guide the reader through creating a DNA application (a simple online banking application) through examples and exercises in each chapter (This walkthrough approach was the main reason I chose this title over the Wrox book).

While the early chapters on system design and data stayed well-focused on relating each new concept to the online bank example, the remaining chapters did not.Instead, the authors presented only very basic code snippets, unrelated to the sample application, and many of which contained typos or were otherwise non-working (as of this date, the publisher's website still does not offer errata or fixed code samples for this book). For this reason, I cannot recommend this title to a beginner or intermediate programmer/analyst.Since the content is focused towards these groups, advanced programmers will likely pass up this book in favor of the Wrox title.I sure wish I had! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
While this book is supposed to teach you as if you don't know, it assumes a great deal. While it does have a good number of items fully explained, the step by step didn't follow the NT4 Server I installed. In fact, itmissed several chunks. Additionally, I found the material either outdatedor just way off in regard to the basics such as partition sizes. Evenintermediate windows users would know the author is either missingsomething, or did his installs several years ago. Good explanations but notgood as a unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative -- a great reference
Unlike other computer topics where I end up buying several books, thisbook has been all I've needed. The information is well organized andpresented in a direct, concise, and easy to understand writing style.Thankfully missing are the feeble attempts at humor that other technicalbooks feel compelled to include. The topics I was especially interested in-- security, domains, user accounts, user rights, and the NTFS file system-- were all fully explained. A useful glossary of terms and a decent indexround out this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not stellar
This is a decent introduction to TCP/IP networking with Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. It covers all the material needed to pass the corresponding MCSE exam.

The quality of the indivual chapter varies greatly, though, whichisn't surprising as the book was written by four people.

The informationin the book is mostly accurate, and it is clear that the material wentthrough an editing process, but some problems remain. In particular, theuse of the "%systemroot%" pointer is clearly wrong, and some ofthe answers to the exercises in the "Lab" section are inaccurate.Ah--the exercises! This is clearly the weakest part of the book that reallyneeds to be revised. Too bad, especially for an exam preparation book.Language and style is another part that needs improvement.

An excellentreference for TCP/IP is Windows NT TCP/IP Network Administration (C. Hunt;O'Reilly)--not an exam preparation book per se, but it has all the materialnecessary to pass, and then some. For those of you who actually likereading, the writing style of this book is far superior to the one underreview, which makes it a pleasurable experience to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Test-Prep Book I've Read
I was extremely impressed with this book. I have read the Sybex(waste of money) and New Riders(good book) books and found them both to pale in comparison to this cheap, complete, resource. I took both exams andobliterated them. This book is very thorough and graphic in itsexplanations of the topics. I would recommend this book moreso than anyother book I have read on the subject. Even among the 14-Day Sams books, this ranks #1 in my opinion. It is much more informative than theWorkstation book and covers the minor details that will be stressed on thetests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Need in 1/2 the pages!
Great Book!! Got everything I needed to pass the Server exam with just 1/2 the pages of all those other prep Books. I hope Sam's continues the trend and produces equally good books for other MS exams.. HIGHLY Recommended!!!P.SThe price (which I normally don't worry about)further makes this anoutstanding buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!
I purchased this book after reading positive reviews about it. It was one of the most easy, down to the point books I've ever read. This book, along with Exam Cram got me through the Server exam with a breeze...

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
I (hesitantly) bought this book as a last minute review type book. I couldn't believe how many questions on the NT 4.O Server exam this book helped me answer. It was very easy to understand and follow,& withoutall the unneeded fluff. This book is a must read for at least the Serverexam. The cover does say it preps you for the Enterprise exam as well, butits hard to say how well, since I haven't taken that exam yet. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst and useless oracle book that I have ever owned!
It can't even help me in setting up a useful Oracle 8i in my system. I have managed to setup the Oracle 8i on my system and able to interact with it with the help of the following Oracle8 for Dummies and Oracel8i for Dummies. The dummies' explanations are much clearer and more organized. At the end, I have donated this book to the charity.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book when coming from MS SQL Server
The 5-star reviews are wrong. This is not a good book. There are no useful examples. The installation information is non-informative. All screen shots are from Oracle 8.1.3 Beta. Coming from an SQL Server background, this book was a waste of $30. Unfortunately, I don't have a suggestion for a better book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I paid money for this...
Sadly I found this book to be next to useless.Learn Oracle in 24 hours, HAH.First of all, this book wastes more time talking about NT than it does about actually installing Oracle and connecting clients. In fact it provides only an explanation of the GUI install wizard and only a beta at that.By the way everything explained here is available in the Oracle documentation. If you install Oracle according to this book don't plan on using the client from which to work.If you get lucky you will connect, if not this book provides no help.As a matter of fact I have found very little information on Net8 connections in any book.Well I could go on, but don't waste your money if you are new to Oracle.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was a complete waste of my money
The book is very poorly written, and is not useful at all. Please don't get fooled by the other "reviewer's" five star rating. If you must buy this book, I would urge you to go to a bookstore/library and browse through the book and decide for yourself. There are too many good books on Oracle out there to waste your money on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a jump start

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent for beginners
This book is exactly what it says... a begnner's guide to W2K.But it does contain a lot of useful info.

It is well designed and thougth out and as a training guide for employees it is great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple book to get you started at an excellent price
As a Sr. system analyst, I was asked to evaluate the readinessfor Win 2000 Pro to be used in my company, as well as finding goodresource and training materials for my staff. After browsing several similar books in a local B&N bookstore, I picked this one as our official handbook, for the following reasons:

1. The price is right. For 19.99, it is wallet-welcome for many of my co-workers, and my company (if my company decides to pay, hopefully).

2. It is cook-book easy. There is almost not a single page going without figures.I found from teaching experience that it is the easiest way for people to follow.

3. It covers most of the topics a new W2K user will ask, from installation to configuration to networking to trouble-shooting.And it explain things in plain English that most of the people will appreciate. The procedural steps are numbered on the figure with actions shown under the it, making it very easy to follow. 4. After each chapter there is a Q&A section called Personal Workbook.A reader then can review and test his/her knowledge just learned.I do think it is a nice touch as a teaching materials because it helps a user to identify some blind spots, as well as pointing out the more important parts covered in that chapter.

I think this book is well organized and very easy to read.It is not the most advanced book around, however, for $19.99........... there is nothing to lose to get this book.END ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok for a "get your feet wet" book.
I stumbled on this book while cleaning out a cube and gave it a read.Obviously, this is a dated book.

Overall, it's an ok very basic introduction to Perl. However, it could create some bad programing habits so it should not be viewed as a resource for building core skills nor should you consider it a reference book.

Probably it's biggest value was that it showed how to do things in NT.But there are many resources for that now.

I was surprised that it attempted to talk about object oriented programing and CGI in 2 chapters. These topics have filled books.

So what is the value of this book?Well. If you have little money, then it's ok. Just remember to use strict and use warnings in the examples. Those two will save you grief and start you with a good programing habit. Don't take the book as gospel. Use it as a way to see some examples as what Perl can do.

After you read the book, look for the Perl docs and some sites like the perlmonks. That will get you on your way and in time you will see this book would not serve as a reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is a very quick and organized way to get up and going in Perl.By the end of day 7 (day seven will take more than a day if you do it right) you will have a good Perl foundation.

I have the Camel book that I go to from time to time (Camel has more humor and more technical content), but I use this book as my primary reference because of it's easy layout.

If you serious about Perl, also buy the Camel book as a deeper secondary reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better organized that Larry's famous book
This book is better organized than Larry's famous book and it is easier to find information in it.

It is a great reference work and tutorial.

2-0 out of 5 stars Covers material, but better know programming.
The first impression is the large number of typos in the code.It seems to work well for teaching 'what' works in Perl, but totally skips any 'why' structure. It comes off as an infinite number of special exceptions.Someadvice, such as in the Pattern Matching chapter is just plan wrong.Seemsto have slipped out without being editted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!! The right way to go.
I have no background in programming, but also wanted to learn some scripting language to automate my tasks for administering Windows NT network. A friend of mine recommended me about Perl and i bought this book. And now i am a proud owner of this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For the novice Windows user
This book is definitely for the novice. Newcomers to Windows operating systems will find it helpful in basic tasks such as the Start Menu, windows explorer, etc., but do not look for detailed information on just about any topic here. Even where help is offered, it is scant, as in the example of removing an icon from the task bar tray: one specific example is used, with no reference to the general topic of how to access and/or close task bar tray icons in general. For someone new to Windows, this book could be a good value, inasmuch as it walks the user through elementary tasks. For the intermediate to advanced Windows user looking for somewhat more detailed explanations of the 'how' or 'why' of Windows 2000, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars DOS For Dummies 2
Dab Gookin's 'DOS For Dummies' was great ... way back when DOS was hot. This Windows 2000 book it writen the same.I expected a more in depth look at things. Definetly not a book if youwish to go for the MCSE 2000 Track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for this book - now I get it!
The Gookins made this topic extremly easy to understand with this book. The hand holding approach was excellent and they didn't bog me down with a bunch of technical information that I wouldn't use. This book is a great buy and something you'll continually refer to.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light, fun, efficient and understandable!
Gookin presents Windows 2000 Professional in such a way that the reader will remain interested in learning all the necessary skills to navigate and employ this OS successfully. It holds your hand as you explore the Desktop, the Start button, and teaches you essentially what all those gadgets do andhow to change things to work your way. The easy way. After all, isn't thatwhat a good OS is for? - This is not for advanced users or MCSE candidates. If you dread reading technical books, this is for you! ... Read more

Learn how to activate the Windows Me desktop, integrate Windows with the Internet, use the accessories to be more efficient, maximize disk and memory usage, manage the printer and fonts, access email and newsgroups, add and remove programs, and much more. Softcover.Amazon.com Review
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows Me, is more than the software that makes your computer look and act the way that it does: it's your ticket to fun and productivity. Teach Yourself Microsoft Windows Me in 24 Hours provides all of the background information that you need on running programs, connecting to the Internet, communicating with friends, and enjoying multimedia. In addition, it gives clear and well-thought-out instructions for executing the tasks that you'll have to know how to do. You'll be happy with this book if you've used computers a little bit before, but haven't connected to the Internet, or haven't used either Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98.

Each chapter deals with a particular set of details about using Windows Me, introducing first each capability, and presenting then a brief series of steps for readers to follow. It's the "learn-by-doing" approach, and it works well for Windows Me. Each chapter concludes with a question-and-answer section that further engages the reader. Oddly, the book makes no mention of establishing an Internet connection. That must be up to you and your service provider's support desk. --David Wall

4-0 out of 5 stars great book but a bit dated
great book but a bit dated. Central concepts still apply but it talks about things like "modems"

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough Hands On!
This book was more touchy-feely to me than practical.I have taught extensively in the past, and do not need a book that gives me fundamental pedagogical skills -- I already possess them.

I was looking for a book that would assist me in converting a course from face-to-face to online. This book has an extensive section on the technologies required to teach online, which will be helpful to those who have never used computer before; to me, it was a waste of space.

There is no discussion of merits of different instructional design methodologies, and not a lot of concrete examples of how to teach online. This is a very light book, and I wouldn't use it anywhere except possibly to familiarize upper management with the logistics of online teaching.

For those teachers/professors/instructors/educators who are going to be on the front lines of online education, you can give this book a pass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Talks about Teaching First!
Finally, a book about online teaching that actually talks about TEACHING! It sets the context in education pedagogy and then gives the practical suggestions. Now teachers will have something to work from, other than just the mechanics of the technology. This will launch them on a successful TEACHING experience and better student retention.

A web site comes with the book, but not all the references in the book are on the web site and some of the links on the site are broken.

Still for those of you thinking of teaching online, the book is written in a language that you can understand - one of teaching and learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Information, Helpful tips and tricks
Finally a practical, useful book covering both the background materials and basic information needed to select a delivery system, develop a course, and conduct a class at a college level.Moore, Winograd and Lange combine to present materials that are not biased toward one publisher or delivery system. They share details on many of the major players in the field, and permit the reader to apply the the lessons learned to developing their own course to be delivered via F2F or distance education.

Emphasis is given to helping the faculty member personalize the online learning experience for the student.Various teaching styles are discussed and hints for applying web enhanced experiences are given.

Appropriate attention is given to the task of translating content of the course to an online mode.Hints and tips are included for creating syllabus, assingments, discussion questions and other tools that will increase interactivity.Once the course is "designed", they step the reader through many of the details and mechancis of actually converting the materials to online format.

Time is taken to help the reader realize that once the course is created, the real work is ready to begin. Implementation includes conducting the class utilizing the designed materials and making any modfications and/or changes that are necessary as the semester progresses. Tips include maintaining a schedule throughout the week, and providing rich, rapid feeback to the students. Evaluation techniques are discussed with the idea of being able to improve the course materials, format and schedule in the future.

This book provides a number of checklists and tables that will be valuable tools for the reader. The companion website is a valuable list of resources and hyperlinks that provide hours and hours of fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars E-Learning as Next Killer Application
"You CAN Teach Online!" provides easy-to-follow examples of pedagogical techniques, and tools that will be useful for faculty interested in developing online courses in the traditional and online classrooms. Throughout the text, numerous technical drawings, charts, graphs, and photographs are displayed to illustrate the very latest in educational technology.

Just as every writer needs an editor, a field expert needs structure for building a good educational course.

The book follows its own advice in layout and avails to the reader a website with lots of goodies to download (free!). ... Read more

If you're new to the Windows world and daunted by the morass of available titles, start by getting Teach Yourself Windows® 98 VISUALLY™, part of IDG Books' best-selling 3-D Visual® series, praised by industry scribes as the best introductory books on the market."

Teach Yourself Windows 98 VISUALLY unveils the Windows 98 operating system with two-page color spreads that provide clear instructions, step-by-step screenshots, and concise illustrations. Each Windows 98 task, from setup to shutdown, is presented with helpful tips, FAQs, and specific highlights.

So grab a copy of Teach Yourself Windows 98 VISUALLY, commence your Windows 98 tutorial, and remember the maranGraphics mantra: read less, learn more. "Amazon.com Review
Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visually relies on theprinciple that it's possible to teach a reader how to perform Windows98 tasks with extremely few words, relying instead on copiousillustrations (both screen shots and conceptual diagrams), labels, andefficient prose. This book succeeds in its mission; a novice with nocomputer experience will find this guide extremely helpful inunraveling the less intuitive parts of Windows 98.

Each spreadbegins with an attractive conceptual diagram that illustrates anabstraction; for example, a freeway overpass surmounts a twistingmountain path to demonstrate Windows 98 shortcuts. Then a series ofscreen shots shows what appears on your monitor as you perform thetask. Lines and labels clarify the names and functions of keyinterface elements, while succinct captions explain what's goingon. All the illustrations appear in full color, so what you see onthese pages is what you see on your screen.

You'll learn all the keytasks here, including mouse manipulation, file organization, the useof the important Windows 98 accessories, networking essentials, electronic mail, and Web-page creation. It would be nice if there weresome mention of full-featured productivity applications--no one reallyuses WordPad for serious work--but as a Windows 98 text, this bookcovers all the bases.

Like the more shallow but very similar Windows 98 Simplified(from the same author), Teach Yourself Windows 98 Visuallyrepresents the ultimate in Windows 98 hand holding. --DavidWall ... Read more
