Not Sure
This is a pretty short book and the information that it does have gets repetitive. Some of the questions are so oddly specific that I just can't imagine them being used on the TExES. Other questions were difficult to understand and/or poorly worded. I haven't taken the exam yet so I don't know how useful this book was, but surely someone can make something better.

Not sure I would recommend this one ...
I have taken all my college coursework required to take the certification test (ESL 154). I bought this study guide to help me prepare for the questions I might encounter on the test. As I am reading through the research before beginning the sample test, I am a bit mystified by the numerous grammatical and punctuational errors throughout the book. I also noticed that the author is from Southern Connecticut State University - why isn't there an author from Texas? Anyway, it is a first edition and claims that 1,500 teachers have reviewed the book for its content. The content seems to match my coursework so far ... just a little frustrated at the typos. The bibliography is also limited to a few references. There are others cited in the text but not in the references. I wanted to check out a few and don't have any clue where it came from. Oh well. This paper advocates the use of ESL (English as a Second Language) as all instructional technique not only in the area of language arts but also in the area of content subject courses, such as Social Studies (Global Studies), Sciences, Health, Personal Finance, Career Development, etc. for the LEP (Limited English Proficient) students in the public schools. For various reasons, it is not practicable for most of the LEP students to receive real bilingual instruction (i.e. academic instruction through the home language) in the schools. Therefore, ESL instructional technique in content subjects appears to be the only feasible option to provide an equitable educational opportunity to this particular student population. The paper also advocates the early use of such technique for content subjects side by side with the continued learning of language arts (English). This use should start as soon as the students concerned have achieved some rudimentary though still imperfect language skills, because the proposed use of ESL instructional technique for content subject area can cognitively help accelerate the learning of language arts (English). At the same time, if properly coordinated and adopted, the language arts classes can start some pre-content subject courses to prepare the ground for the learning of the full content subjects, both required and elective. This manner of intra-program interaction between the language arts and the content subjects components within ESL program itself can impact greatly the educational future of the client student population. ... A Passionate Plea for Smarter, Deeper, and Better ESL Programs
This thin book, written by an American immigrant of Chinese descent, makes a passionate - and highly rational - plea for smarter, deeper, and better English instruction across the curriculum. Noting the success of many immersion programs, Mr. Shi notes the need for immigrants to receive in-depth, academically rich courses that expand English skills while studying other subjects.

The tactful approach, however, often requires the audience to read between the lines. Naming names and blaming low standards of public school systems would have been more enlightening for parents and students. Of course, explicit condemnation of pathetic, almost non-existent standards would have also reduced the appeal of this most reasonable book to school administrators, guidance counselors, and local school boards. Shi choose the wiser, if less emotionally satisfying path, in slowly, systematically building his persuasive argument against sheltered ESL courses and bilingualism.

Finally, some minor editing problems mar this fine work - particularly with missing articles and peculiar prepositions. Still, ESL teachers working in the United States will find it a valuable addition to the literature and worth reading. ... Read more
