Product Description
Biochemical engineering is the application of engineering principles to conceive, design, develop, operate, and/or use processes and products based on biological and biochemical phenomena. Biochemical engineering influences a broad range of industries, including health care, agriculture, food, enzymes, chemicals, waste treatment, and energy, among others. Historically, biochemical engineering has been distinguished from biomedical engineering by its emphasis on biochemistry and microbiology and by the lack of a health care focus. This is no longer the case. There is increasing participation of biochemical engineers in the direct development of pharmaceuticals and other therapeutic products. Biochemical engineering has been central to the development of the biotechnology industry, given the need to generate prospective products on scales sufficient for testing, regulatory evaluation, and subsequent sale. This book begins with a review of biodiesel processing technology, the use of varied biodiesel in diesel engines and an analysis of economic scale and ecological impact of biodiesel fuel.Other areas of research include the application of biochemical engineering in the fishery industry, algae growth, and waste water management. ... Product Description

Modern industrial agriculture is in crisis. In our obsession with 'efficiency' and short-term profit, we are losing all real connection with the natural world. As a result, the dream of global abundance promised by the introduction of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and hybrid seeds is becoming a nightmare of health risks, degraded land and ailing communities. The way we produce our food is destructive and quite simply unsustainable.

From the Ground Up: Rethinking Industrial Agriculture sets the decline of agriculture within the broader context of industrialisation as a whole, and explores some of the fundamental principles which underlie the 'growth-at-any-cost' thinking of modern society. At the same time, it documents the growing public distrust of conventional agricultural practices, and highlights some of the most promising alternatives leading to more sane, environmentally healthy ways of producing food.

This book is a valuable reference for those concerned with the future of agriculture - in the industrialised countries as well as in the South, where agricultural development continues to be modelled on the industrial ideal.

Product Description

The work of Douglas Harper has for two decades documented worlds in eclipse. A glimpse into the life of dairy farmers in upstate New York on the cusp of technological change, Changing Works is no exception. With photographs and interviews with farmers, Harper brings into view a social world altered by machines and stuns us with gorgeous visions of rural times past. As a member of this community, Harper relates compelling stories about families and their dairies that reveal how the advent of industrialized labor changed the way farmers structure their work and organize their lives. His new book charts the transformation of American farming from small dairies based on animal power and cooperative work to industrialized agriculture.

Changing Works combines Harper's pictures with classic images by photographers such as Gordon Parks, Sol Libsohn, and Charlotte Brooks-men and women whose work during the 1940s documented the mechanization and automation of agricultural practices. Part social history and part analysis of the drive to mass production, Changing Works examines how we farmed a half century ago versus how we do today through pictures new and old and through discussions with elderly farmers who witnessed the makeover. Ultimately, Harper challenges timely ecological and social questions about contemporary agriculture. He shows us how the dissolution of cooperative dairy farming has diminished the safety of the practice, degraded the way we relate to our natural environment, and splintered the once tight-knit communities of rural farmers. Mindful, then, of the advantages of preindustrial agriculture, and heeding the alarming spread of mad cow and foot-and-mouth disease, Changing Works harks back to the benefits of an older system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Changing Works
I found "Changing Works" to be a very informative text in the area of technological advances in the dairy industry.Harper uses SONJ pictures to highlight wonderful interviews with various dairy farmers that farmed in the generations before World War II.These interviews bring the past back to life as the reader goes through the mechanization introductions such as replacement of horses and the reconstruction of the milking process.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the dairy industry and to future dairymen. As an agricultural student, I was enthralled throughout the entire book.Harper tends to be less descriptive when it comes to the actual workings of the machinery, but it does not take much away from the rich narrative he weaves with the farmers' interviews. The reader gets a feeling of loss for the traditional ways that Harper projects throughout the book and it only enhances the content. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A well-written and gentle introduction to advanced mathematics for engineers, but with only a minimum set of solutions.
This book will appeal primarily to engineers, scientists, and analysts who use mathematics as an application tool for practical problems. Although it will have less appeal for mathematicians, sections of this book may provide them with helpful preludes to more rigorous presentations.

The text provides a reasonably comprehensive introduction to key mathematical topics of interest to engineers and scientists including, ODEs, Series Methods, Laplace Transforms, Matrices, Vector Algebra, Fourier Series, PDEs, Numerical Methods, Complex Variables, and Wavelets.

The book's primary strength is its gentle presentation of potentially difficult topics using a well-organized step-by-step approach with lots of solved in-text examples, and it ties it's presentations to current software technology. Although computer technology plays an increasingly important role in the solution of real problems by subject matter experts, many mathematical presentations often ignore or minimize this importance. Here applications are integrated with both analytical and technology solutions using, primarily, Maple but also addressing Matlab and even Excel. The appropriate Maple commands are discussed and explained in the text and an Appendix has a short overview of Maple. This is much more appropriate than leaving technology solutions to be studied separately. The book also includes material of contemporary importance, e.g., wavelets not normally found in similar works.

The book's primary weakness is its lack of fully worked solutions to problem sets. Only solutions to even number problems are provided, and even here not all even number problems are provided with answers. Solutions only provide the final answers not the steps necessary to obtain the answers. Thus, even if a matching answer is obtained it is not clear if the best approach to obtain the answer was used. End of sections problems often include specific problems to be solved with Maple; however, the Maple commands to obtain these results are not provided in the solution key. To put the solution issue in context: although the book is over 700 pages long the "Answers to Selected Problems" section is only 15 pages.

This is an excellent guide to advanced applications for engineers and scientists that can serve as both a text and reference, providing discussions of both analytical and technology solutions. Its major fault is its lack of fully-worked solutions to problem sets, and only providing answers to some, albeit many, even number questions. If the solution insufficiencies were corrected this work would easily merit five stars. However, even with its solutions deficiencies, this well-written work with its numerous solved in-text examples, is easy to recommend. If used in conjunction with a source of problems with fully-worked solutions this would be an outstanding introduction to advanced engineering mathematics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing in its broad appeal
For many math departments around the country, a good part of course offerings consists of service courses for engineering. As a result, there are lots of textbooks around written to fit a particular niece. And the result is often a fairly narrow focus.
This lovely book is refreshing in its broad appeal: advanced engineering mathematics, engineering analysis, or applied mathematics. Designed for engineering students, it is well balanced and useful for its primary mission as well as for students in a related variety of mid-to upper level undergraduate courses; even for math majors.
Although its stated target audience is upper-level undergraduate students or first-year graduates, it may work well as a supplementary text in differential equations, in transform theory, and in applied mathematics, more generally.
Selections from the contents: Reals and complex, differential equations (both ordinary (ODEs) and partial (PDEs)), transforms (including Fourier and wavelets), matrix theory and linear algebra, numerical methods.
Special features in the new edition:Focuses on real-world problems; Incorporates MapleRG throughout, with some applications of ExcelRG and MATLABRG. includes Review solutions of ordinary differential equations + a new chapter on wavelets and a new section on Fourier Transforms. Review by Palle Jorgensen, March 2008.
