Product Description
The main theme of this book is robust control design from a practical point of view. A thorough introduction to frequency response norm-based robust control design methods is given. This includes, in particular, a comprehensive treatment of the structural singular value ยต. An important problem in robust control design is how to determine model uncertainty. In this book it is shown how system identification can be used to obtain error bounds for use in subsequent controller design. Both classical prediction error methods and the more recent Stochastic Embedding Approach are treated and a step-by-step procedure for system identification based robust control design is provided. The design techniques presented in the book are illustrated through numerous case studies including, for example, the control design for an ASTOVL (Advanced Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing) aircraft. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars From system-norms to practical design : A quick course
This book provides a concise and self-contained introduction to post-modern control theory and estimation priniciples without burdening the lay reader with too much math.

The first section introduces system norms for multivariable control and the structured singular value for robust control design. The next section covers parameter estimation techniques. The material from both sections is then combined for application to practical design problems. All sections contain case studies of example design problems which are presented in detail.

The introduction to system norms is perhaps the best amongst existing books in terms of access to readers with only an undergraduate level background in mathematics. The section on system ID however might require parallel readings from other books if included in a course.

Overall, the book is perfectly taylored to introduce post-modern control philosophies to both graduate students as well as practising engineers. ... Read more

Product Description
These case histories will be of interest to both civil engineers and geophysicists. They document the use of a variety of geophysical methods in support of civil engineering projects. Geophysical methods presented include electrical, seismic, and magnetic (specifically Time Domain EM (TDEM), DC Resistivity, Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic, Seismic Tomography, Refraction, Reflection, Doppler Shift Sonar, Side Scan Sonar, and Magnetics). Whether mapping an aquifer for a public water supply, planning a waste disposal project, or investigating the causes of a landslide, geophysical techniques support engineers in their work to serve the public welfare. Transportation engineers will find that seismic tomography is an attractive alternative to the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) method of evaluating pavements. Lastly, both contractors and owners will be interested in how geophysics can reduce the risk in differing site condition (DSC) clauses by identifying site conditions that differ from what might be expected with only a casual surface examination. ... This book explores these and many other related subjects. This book will be of great value to expert witnesses in liability suits resulting from flood, erosion, landslide, mudslide, or other types of natural hazard-related damage. It clearly explains the needs of an expert, the relationship of the expert to the client and the attorney, the challenges to face, and the proper orientation as an expert. Through a variety of case studies, the book illustrates investigative techniques, case and data presentation to prove "reasonableness" or "unreasonableness" of conduct and "causation."

Product Description
Illustrating the many ways that structural engineers can bring their creativity and innovation to contribute to the design of the best buildings, this book presents the full value of the engineer in helping clients and architects achieve their goals.

The structural engineer's primary contribution to a project is clear - to ensure the building stands up and carries the loads to which it may be subjected. However, good engineers can bring so much more than this minimum. They add value to a project, enable it to function more effectively, reduce the risk of time and cost overruns, and enable architects greater opportunities for expression.

Addis presents a complete understanding of structure, by explaining the processes, variety of materials and philosophical issues involved, through over forty case studies. These examples illustrate why innovative engineers are now recognized as creators in their own right, able to explore the infinite ways of making and joining materials to create structure and form. It also proves their essential role as an integral member of the design team.

This text is useful to engineers in demonstrating how to apply a knowledge of materials and form to their clients needs, and useful for architects in knowing how to get the best from a structural engineer and realise their dreams.

* Provides a resource for architects in understanding and making effective use of materials and structures
* Encourages more architects to ask for more imaginative input from their structural engineers to inspire building designs
* International case-studies reveal ways in which engineers can help develop architects' ideas ... Read more

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A262423. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The DAKOTA scheduling system has been proposed for use in the United States Air Forces Europe's (USAFE's) Operational Support Airlift (OSA) scheduling. This thesis examines the OSA scheduling topic and reviews the relevant literature on vehicle routing, concluding that exact methods are intractable for large problem sizes. Consequently, heuristic methods must be considered. This thesis takes a detailed look at the DAKOTA heuristic. It examines the concepts of Validation, Verification and Accreditation (VV&A), particularly as they apply to heuristics and algorithms. It then defines what measures of performance may prove useful in judging heuristics and algorithms in general, and details the statistical tests which can be used to make those comparisons. It discusses four of the predominant airlift scheduling models currently in use, and finally develops a methodology which can be used to evaluate a deterministic passenger airlift scheduling heuristic, using DAKOTA as a case study. ... Description:
Martiodrilus n. sp. (Oligochaeta, Glossoscolecidae) is a large native earthworm from the natural savannas of the eastern plains of Colombia. The description of the main biological, ecological and functional attributes of this species in a natural savanna and several introduced pastures at the Carimagua Research Station (320km east from Villavicencio) was the main objective in this study. Density and biomass of this species were significantly much higher in the introduced pastures compared with the savanna (ANOVA, P<0.01). Evidence of vertical migration during the year was observed, while it is active in the topsoil during the beginning of the rainy season, it enters in a true diapause to withstand adverse environmental conditions before the onset of the dry period, being adults the last to enter into this phase (after reproduction period). Martiodrilus n. sp. seemed to select food substrates with high organic contents since casts produced in the two systems had significantly higher total C and total N contents than the bulk soil. Besides, C content also increased significantly during ageing of casts (+100%), possibly because of CO"2 fixation processes, accumulation of dead roots and/or macrofaunal activities. The effects of earthworm activities on soil and cast seed banks were revealed in another experiment. The composition of the above standing vegetation was relatively closer to that of the cast seed bank than that of the soil seed bank. The results obtained in this study support the general knowledge of how earthworms can affect soil fertility and plant growth. Martiodrilus n. sp., through the production of casts affects the availability and nature of both the spatial and trophic resource in soil. This species certainly belongs to the functional group of ''ecosystem engineers'', as it affects the availability of some resources for other organisms through the production of physical biostructures. The next step in research should be directed now to test whether Martiodrilus n. sp. is a keystone species within the soil community or not. ... Read more
