Product Description
The relevance of royal inscriptions, Herodotus and Manetho in order to reconstruct the chronology and history of ancient Egypt has been fundamental in scholarly research since Champollion's times. Those sources, however, together with other historical and pseudo-historical material such as the Bentresh and Famine stelae are here analysed as historical documents per se, completely disregarding their value for the histoire evenementielle. Genre and format of royal inscriptions become important in order to establish the power of the tradition, while all the historical sources mentioned above embody hopes, fears, as well as social and cultural conflicts existing in Egyptian society at the times they were written. ... Product Description
From the earliest times the Nile has been central to the life of Egypt, but one aspect of the river that has rarely been explored is the life within the riverthe fish. Archaeology has shown that fish have always been important to the Egyptians; prehistoric man depended upon them, the Egyptians of Dynastic times used them as both food and currency and they have been a delicacy ever since. This study explores their economic and religious significance and examines Ancient Egyptian fishing methods, the techniques of which were beautifully depicted in paintings and reliefs by the Egyptians. Fishing tackle, harpoons, fish-hooks, fish-traps and nets are described and illustrated with examples from the ancient art. The core of this fascinating work is the detailed description of some twenty different species which are shown in detail by the Egyptians. Some are well known to all archaeologists, like the 'bolti' or Tilapia. Others are much more curious like the amphibious Clarias or the electric catfish Malapterurus electricus with his 200 volt sting. Each species is identified, fully described and illustrated. Finally there is an appendix on osteology that will enable archaeologists to identify the bones they excavate. This book will be invaluable to both archaeologists and ichthyologists and important for the study of the art and religion of Ancient Egypt. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good lecturer; fun subject
This is a very enjoyable series that goes through the history of ancient Egypt from prehistoric times, through the three great kingdoms, and to the last ruler of Egypt:Cleopatra.Professor Brier also takes a few detours to discuss mummies, Eyptian medicine and magic, and other topics of note.

Professor Brier is a very engaging person and clearly loves his subject. This is the kind of professor one misses after leaving college.

It's an introductory course, so some of the deeper historical questions presented by Egypt are not sufficiently explored. But this is still quite good, and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Excerpt: Ancient Egypt was an ancient civilization of eastern North Africa, concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River in what is now the modern country of Egypt. The civilization coalesced around 3150 BCwith the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh, and it developed over the next three millennia. Its history occurred in a series of stable Kingdoms, separated by periods of relative instability known as Intermediate Periods. Ancient Egypt reached its pinnacle during the New Kingdom, after which it entered a period of slow decline. Egypt was conquered by a succession of foreign powers in this late period, and the rule of the pharaohs officially ended in 31 BC when the early Roman Empire conquered Egypt and made it a province. For most parts of its long history, Ancient Egypt was unified under one government. The main military concern for the nation was to keep enemies out. The arid plains they wanted to get rid of and deserts surrounding Egypt were inhabited by nomadic tribes who occasionally tried to raid or settle in the fertile Nile river valley. Nevertheless the great expanses of the desert formed a barrier that protected the river valley and was almost impossible for massive armies to cross. The Egyptians built fortresses and outposts along the borders east and west of the Nile Delta, in the Eastern Desert, and in Nubia to the south. Small garrisons could prevent minor incursions, but if a large force was detected a message was sent for the main army corps. Most Egyptian cities lacked city walls and other defenses. The history of Ancient Egypt is divided into three kingdoms and two intermediate periods. During the three Kingdoms Egypt was uni...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7813222 ... Read more
