Product Description
This book addresses aspects of substitute teaching that are essential to making your teaching experience a worthwhile one.For some reason, however, many colleges, universities and professors don't teach from this perspective.Sometimes it takes a person looking from the outside in, someone whose mind has not already been filled with opinions and dogmas to offer a fresh perspective on issues that need to be addressed. This book provides a fresh perspective on the potential solutions to problems that substitute teachers face everyday.Renee was probably the least educated, least experienced substitute teacher in the school district. In fact, she had no formal education or experience in the field of education.Yet, she was a highly coveted substitute teacher in the school district she taught for.She handled and taught the students so well that well-educated and experienced teachers asked for her advice on how they could manage their classes. If you ask some of the best substitute teachers (and teachers for that matter) how they are able to effectively manage their classroom and enjoy their teaching experience, many will tell you that they have used the concepts that have been outlined in this book. The author defines what it means to be a substitute teacher and outlines a holistic approach to substitute teaching that requires the teacher to consider his/her responsibility to their students which goes beyond teaching textbook material. In order to teach textbook material, students must understand the significance of being at school first. If this foundation is not laid, then in many situations, teaching textbook material is futile, if not impossible. In order for the student to understand his/her purpose at school, they should understand that they have a purpose in life and these formative years are their opportunity to discover that purpose.Providing this understanding of purpose will empower even the worst of students to go on to be productive members of society. The students can only go as far as teachers themselves have gone.As a result, if the teacher has not discovered his/her purpose for being alive, it is impossible for him/her to empower his/her students to discover theirs. The author therefore challenges teachers everywhere to first discover their purpose and who they were created to be, so that they can challenge their students to do the same. The author also equips substitute teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively manage the best and worst classrooms. She reminds the teacher that teaching textbook material is very important and should be put in proper perspective so that they can lead their students to become successful, not just in school, but in life. The role of the substitute teacher should never be trivialized and when you know your role and operate in that role, you can have a tremendous impact on those you teach, even if you are in contact with them for only less than one day. ... Product Description
A road map for teachers who strive to be highly effective leaders in our nation's classrooms

Teach For America has fought the daunting battle of educational equity for the last twenty years. Based on evidence from classrooms across the country, they've discovered much about effective teaching practice, and distilled these findings into the six principles presented in this book. The Teaching As Leadership framework inspires teachers to: Set Big Goals; Invest Students and Their Families; Plan Purposefully; Execute Effectively; Continuously Increase Effectiveness; Work Relentlessly. The results are better educational outcomes for our nation's children, particularly those who live in low-income communities.

  • Inspires educators to be leaders in their classrooms and schools
  • Demystifies what it means to be an effective teacher, describes key elements of practice and provides a clear vision of success
  • Addresses the challenges every teacher, in every classroom, faces on a daily basis

An accompanying website includes a wealth of tools, videos, sample lessons, discussion boards, and case studies. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars TFA's resource handbook
"Teaching as Leadership" is quite a title. It implies that the book is largely a process of helping students reach goals themselves, and that is largely teacher driven. In fact, that's the major plan of action here, but it is delivered in a very narrow scope and often ignores many major areas of what I consider to be important in teachers.

First, let's note that this was written by someone who is a very big proponent of an organization called Teach for America (TFA).If you haven't heard of them, they are famous for taking people who are enrolled in college classes, and placing them in low-income schools for two years, with minimal, if any, training on how to manage a classroom, how to plan lessons, and how best to get your message out there.Of course, these schools are typically already failing, so I suppose that the idea here is that it can't get much worse, but I think that this is a very flawed plan that will probably not be that good for students overall, since these schools should be getting the best of the best, not the newest of the new teachers. The vast majority of research for this book came from the TFA program, and therefore you have a very biased look into what happens at schools in general, and with teachers in general. This book focuses solely on low-income schools and students, not your average, run-of-the-mill school, and pretty much assumes that you're working only with below-average students. There is little mention of how to coordinate their training to handle classrooms with skilled or average level students, although, of course, many of the points that they discuss are not necessarily isolated to one group.

As for the skills, they want you basically to make it your goal as a teacher to ensure that your students are making their own goals, taking accountability for their own education, and buying into their program. They give a few little stories of people who have done this, but explanations of ways to do this, or specific lessons and skills to teach are missing. As much as I'd like to have all of my students buy in to their own learning, I find it difficult to assume, as this guide does, that all it takes is a little coaching for that to happen.

Now, on to the plan itself. It's basic. It works. But if you've even had a few good teacher training courses, or if you have common sense, then you're probably going to know the majority of what they talk about doing in order to get students to buy in to their learning. So there's not much revolutionary about it.You'd think there would be more to say than just "plan good lessons, and deliver them well, and work hard at it", but that's literally what three of the six steps in this process are.In fact, the entire thing reads like a pep talk with a few case studies sprinkled in.The book is horribly repetitive, probably because the author didn't really know where else to go with this super-simplified plan.

Finally, this book places the entire burden on the teacher. It's true that without a good model, students probably wouldn't get much of this done on their own.But as a guide to teaching them how do take accountability for themselves, and how they should get in the habit of making goals and working towards them, it sure places a lot of attention on the teacher and what they're doing, instead of focusing on how to teach it to others. Some actual examples, or some sections about answering common questions associated with it would have been great stuff to read.I found this particularly problematic in chapter 2, which is about involving parents. What do you do when you can't get ahold of parents? What do you do when your students aren't listening to those parents? What do you do when parents tell you to bug off?If you read this book, you won't know; you'll read lots of research which indicates, perhaps too obviously, that students with involved parents tend to do better in school and therefore in life, but you won't learn strategies for getting those parents involved at all, or dealing with them if they think you're the real problem.Instead we got an extra 50 pages of inspirational material, talking mostly about a few exceptional teachers who have made the TFA look great.Useful?I think not.

As it is, this book feels like what I would assume the TFA is all about.Go get 'em, guys! Here's your plan - be a good teacher.Be interesting, be relevant, and teach your kids to set goals. How do you do it?Well, just make it up as you go along. You'll come up with something.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book for teachers, particularly new ones
As the daughter of a teacher, and the mother of a teacher-to-be, I was interested in this book.I think that this book sets up very challenging goals, and as other reviewers mentioned, those goals could end up in teacher burn-out if they were not pursued in moderation. No teacher can accomplish everything set out in this book all the time. The need is great, and time is scarce. However, there are a lot of good ideas in this book and it is written in a way that would make a teacher proud of their job and want to achieve the most that they can.I think that the idea of teachers as leaders isn't as prevalent in today's education system as it was in the past, and that a focus on this concept is important.Teachers are undervalued in our society, in general, and this book high-lights the huge impact they can have on students, schools, and communities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a focused group of teachers
I got this book because of it's focus on Leadership, not because I'm a teacher.I minored in leadership studies and enjoy learning how different disciplines view the topic of Leadership, and because I think I missed my calling of being a teacher and have a passion for watching learning and seeing the "light bulbs" turn on.

This book has a narrow focus, in my opinion, on those who teach disadvantaged students almost wholly or substantially, and are in the first few years of his or her career. There is a strong focus on essentially becoming the home room mother of the students, as well as the goal setter, challenger and achievement rewarder. The book requires you as a teacher to invest of yourself, your person and your spirit to help turn things around for your kids. Only those with enough energy and willingness will be able to make use of the entire book.

Another reviewer mentioned the "fruitcake" comparison-- very dense, with good tidbits.I tend to agree with that. There are a lot of real world examples, but little telling you how to "do it". This is a book to show you the light that it is possible to turn around your classroom and the lives of your students, by showing you examples of how it has been done, and I think in hopes of inspiring you to come up with your own methods.

Coming from a business background with lots of book reading & classes, I recognize many of the tools mentioned here as the same tools that self help improvement books use, and some of the same tools that business books use to turn around a company. One of them specifically is setting clear, measurable goals.Instead of "I want my students to have a better average by the end of the year," A more appropriate goal would be " 75% of my students will pass this exam, meet this level of performance, etc. by this time." Only concrete goals that are "measurable" are worth having, so you can clearly see if you have made a difference or not.

I can see this book being really effective for people who aren't 4 year degree'd teachers but have a passion to make a difference. The one person I know who is in a 4 year degree program pursuing a teaching degree frowned upon the book, saying that his program is very against this kind of teaching. So... depending on your background or your needs, that may help you decide if this book is a good fit for you.

I found myself wanting more, as a casual reader of the book, wanting a more in depth "case study" approach with fewer "short teacher stories", to really get an in depth view of the situation, and why certain techniques worked and others didn't.That being said, if you are frustrated and don't know what to do/where to go, you are teaching those who are all disadvantaged, and you're in the first few years of your career, this may be a really useful tool for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to have
My husband is planning on teaching partime online so I thought to grab this book for good reference and it is! So far he enjoys this book and fine it to be a good read, plus he have recommended it to all his friends in education. Especially those who have retired from public schools and are now working with colleges in teacher training programs.

This should be required reading for all college students who are considering education as a major. Apart from that, this book has given him great ideas to try in his effort to be the best teacher he can be.

This is a must have for new teachers. I cannot say this strongly enough.
The tips given in this book will put you on the road to success with simple
attention to how you run a classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Practical Information for Teaching Methods for Highly Effective Teaching for Under-Achieving (and All) Schools
TEACHING AS LEADERSHIP is a book for teachers explaining teaching methods with practical information that can be put into practice right now (if only the teachers are willing and allowed to make the change). With Teach for America (TFA), college graduates agree to teach for a couple of years (even when their major was not education) in order to do service to discount their student loans. They work in cities where kids are underprivileged, they've been labeled as failing and they are at-risk.I have heard in the media that these are places that are hard to lure union teachers to work in so TFA has been welcomed in to help out.

The book starts off trying to convince the reader that these kids who have failed, have imperfect home lives, low incomes, really are capable of learning and excelling at school. This teaching method not only teaches at grade level it works to raise each learner up from the point at which they are behind. Students can make multiple-grades advancement in one year with these methods. This book is an attempt to boost the reader's confidence that these kids are not lost causes and that the teachers possess more power to effect change than they may believe (even with constricted budgets or broken down classrooms).

Once that pep talk is over the book launches into a detailed explanation of the `core values' of TFA. The book's website lists their core values (if you want to learn more about what is in the book). This book expands each item in the framework in detail.Case studies are given to illustrate the ideas. Sidebar quotes tempt the skimming reader to stop skimming and read the whole thing instead.

Before reading this book I didn't know that TFA has a certain teaching method that is completely different than what is normally done in public schools. I'd heard of TFA in the media and assumed they taught by whatever method the schools told them to, boy was I wrong! This TFA method is not winging it by any means. The method is taught to the TFA teachers in a short training period then the TFA teachers are thrown into the fire.

The most surprising thing to me is that a TFA teacher uses their method in a classroom right next door to a union paid, experienced teacher using the same old, same old way that isn't working. Despite no extra money and the building being in whatever state of imperfection or disrepair that it may, students in the TFA classroom suddenly are learning more and scoring higher on tests. There is an attitude change and a new positive outlook on learning within the children. They are said to make multiple year's strides in one school year using the TFA teaching methods.

I see this TFA initiative as a kind of back door education reform but happening in limited locations and only in certain classrooms within one school building. What a shame that a more wide-sweeping reform is not happening across our nation.

It also seems to me that the TFA attitude instilled in the students is more motivating and energizing than what is happening in middle class and upper class towns across our nation. If every school uses the TFA methods I can't imagine what our nation's children could accomplish.

This book is fantastic!

I'm a homeschooling mother and read these books to get inspiration for my home education teaching experience. One reaction I have is that what homeschooling parents like me are doing is actually outlined in this book as the optimal way to teach! Yet I had never seen it written out in one place like this. Much of this I have learned through experience and trial and error with my own kids or hearing a tidbit here and trying it then seeing how that worked in real life.

How to set goals, how to plan lessons to achieve that goal, and how to custom design an education is all here, in an attempt to persuade teachers to take on this way of teaching. The book also includes rubrics for measuring academic performance and outcomes.

I recommend Teaching As Leadership for any teacher who is looking fore new ideas to boost learning in the classroom (and for homeschooling parents too).

Top Five Things Every Teacher Needs to Know (or Do) to Be Successful
Amazon-exclusive content from author Doug Lemov

1. Simplicity is underrated. A simple idea well-implemented is an incredibly powerful thing.

2. You know your classroom best. Always keep in mind that what’s good is what works in your classroom.

3. Excellent teaching is hard work. Excellent teachers continually strive to learn and to master their craft. No matter how good a teacher is it’s always possible to be better.

4. Every teacher must be a reading teacher. Reading is the skill our students need.

5. Teaching is the most important job in the world. And it’s also the most difficult.

Amazon Exclusive:Q&A with Author Doug Lemov

“Great teachers are born, not made…” You obviously disagree with this statement—please tell us why.
A few teachers may be born with an intuitive gift for teaching but I when I watch a great teacher I see mostly hard work and attention to detail. So believe that great teachers can be made. Every teacher can improve by using proven, concrete techniques in the classroom. This question brings to mind two amazing teachers I know—Julie Jackson and Colleen Driggs. Julie and Colleen are always doing things like reviewing their lesson plans on the way to work and talking with peers about how to improve their craft. It’s exciting to me that what we may attribute to natural talent is actually hard work. You can choose to work hard and improve and become exactly the teacher you want to be.

What’s the best way for a teacher to start the year with a new class?
It’s important to build systems and routines, as I describe in chapter six, “Setting and Maintaining High Behavioral Expectations” in Teach Like a Champion. The first day of school should be teaching students the right way to do things and practicing this over and over. Learning and practicing these systems and routines allows a teacher and her students to rely on this foundation for the rest of the year.

I once witnessed Dave Levin (who is a founder of KIPP schools and a fantastic teacher) begin a teacher training workshop in an interesting way. Dave started by handing a mirror to every teacher in the room. He said, “Your classroom is a mirror. It looks however you make it look. The first step is to believe that your classroom mirrors your decisions. You can control it.” That’s the first step. To accept that as a teacher you decide who you want to be and how you want to create your classroom culture. You own it.Some people do it so you can do it. And that’s a good thing.

If you could just change one thing in our nation’s schools, what would you change?
It’s important that we do everything possible to support teachers so that they love their work and can be successful in the classroom. In my opinion, teachers should get paid the same as professional athletes or film stars.

This book is largely based on your experience with the group of charter schools you help lead on the east coast, called Uncommon Schools. Please tell us more about Uncommon Schools.
Uncommon Schools is a group of schools that serve low-income populations in urban centers in New York and New Jersey.Across our 16 schools 98% of our students scored proficient in math and just below 90% in English. This means that our schools usually outperform more privileged suburban districts.

We’ve been using the 49 techniques in my book for 5 years, with our teachers constantly refining and adding to them. Our experience has proven not only that that these techniques work—and they can work in every school and in every classroom—but that great teachers make them better and more sophisticated over time. And best of all the teachers who practice using them find themselves in control of a happy, rigorous classroom that reflects the motivations that brought them to teaching in the first place. Successful teachers are happy teachers!

For the price, this is a very helpful book. I needed it for one of my college classes, but I think that every person aspiring to be a more effective teacher or coach would benefit greatly from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars don't miss this..if you're teaching k-12
I've been teaching for 20+ yrs...and still picked up more than a few tips I missed over the decades! It's well written,an easy read and can be read in segments.(very practical tips)
I also got this book as a present for my niece who just started teaching a year ago...
...The DVD which comes with the book, is a plus for those of us that need "the visual!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Strategies
This book had a few great tips that I use and implement in my classroom now that I hadn't used before. Most ideas and strategies I already use but for a new teacher, this book would be extremely useful.I loved his approach and outline on how to use this book for procedures for the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Actually Pretty Good, Thank You!
Like your typical veteran teacher, I'm deeply suspicious of quick fixes. This book details a number of helpful teaching techniques that are effective, particularly with low-income students who would seem to be unlikely candidates for academic success.

I've started using them, and it's been a pleasant surprise to see how effective they are.

I recommend this book highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Work
I ordered this for my wife - here is her review:

Teach Like a Champion is excellent, so far as I have read. Very clearly written (though with a few copy-editing oversights). The techniques explained can be learned and used by anyone who works with children. If every teacher in America had a copy of this book and took it to heart, teacher effectiveness would soar and we would go a long way to solving our education "crisis."

1-0 out of 5 stars A Bunch of Hooey
Do not bother to waste your money on this book!

The book claims to help an individual learn to "teach with his or her strengths."However, the book really shills the highly questionable "TeacherInsight" assessment from Gallup which may be a contributor to the significantly high rate of teacher turnover that school districts are experiencing.Save your money. The book and the assessment are not just questionable but may be harmful to your intellectual health!

What is "TeacherInsight"? Applying for a teaching job at a large suburban school district after years of highly successful teaching at another district, I was directed to take an online assessment entitled "TeacherInsight."Having also been an executive of an assessment company years before and being well versed in psychometrics as well as also having directed the assessment company's online initiative,I was dismayed at not only how poorly "TeacherInsight" is constructed but at the poor quality of its implementation online.

Later I researched the assessment and realized that contrary to the theory on which talent assessments are based, "TeacherInsight" is nota tool for prospective teachers to determine if they possess the interest, workstyle, and capabilities for a particular job; but it is a tool to winnow out prospective job candidates.Assessments, such as "TeacherInsight," are developed, based on interviews with individuals considered exemplary in a particular field. The theory is that using this profile can help people determine if they are a good fit for that particular job.In others words, what is the likelihood that they will not only succeed but thrive and gain enjoyment and fulfillment.

Too often these tests, such as "TeacherInsight," are now used as gatekeepers by HR personnel and others given the responsibility for hiring and advancing people. The tragic aspect of this is that, at least with "TeacherInsight," there is no solid data that the teachers hired based on a score on this test are superior to those who were never considered. The result is that many dedicated and highly effective teachers are never considered for a position.

With the extremely high turnover in teachers who remain less than five years in the profession and the extreme cost associated with teacher turnover ($6,000 per lost teacher in a small district and upwards to $25,000 per teacher in a large district), relying on such assessments as "TeacherInsight" may make the screening process easier, but in the long run not only more expensive in teacher turnover but also in lower student achievement.

School districts using "TeacherInsight" are remiss if they do not demand that Gallup, the company that developed and markets "TeacherInsight," permit a comprehensive evaluation of the assessment by a reputable third party research company in order to document the validity, reliability, and impact of "TeacherInsight."

In the meantime, purchasing this book only validates the theory and puts money into the pocket of those how help perpetrate this folly.

Product Description
This text, designed as a handbook for preservice and beginning teachers, is organized to address broad topics in secondary school teaching rather than the needs of specific subject areas. While examples are included from specific subject disciplines, the focus is on the relationships among them (concepts, skills, practices). Preservice teachers in secondary school general methods classes and student teaching seminars are frequently preoccupied with two problems--classroom control and figuring out exactly what is the role of the teacher. These problems are compounded by methods texts that compartmentalize different aspects of teaching (theory, practice, critical analysis). Teaching to Learn, Learning to Teach: A Handbook for Secondary School Teachers provides an alternative.

*Although different approaches to secondary teaching are included, a model student-centered approach is offered that provides a series of "PRO/CLASS Practices" for designing lessons, developing personal connections with students, and building classroom communities. (The acronym stands for Planning, Relationships, Organization, Community, Leadership, Assessment, Support, Struggle.)

*The broad principles of PRO/CLASS Practice are presented as part of an integrated approach to teaching -- not as a recipe to be followed mechanically. Preservice teachers are encouraged to reinterpret the principles and continually redefine them as they develop their own reflective practice.

*A variety of pedagogical features and activities are integrated throughout the text, including sample "Nuts and Bolts" teaching techniques (lesson and unit design, activities, questions, projects, team learning, community building) that can be used in different types of classrooms and by teachers employing different pedagogical approaches; conversations with preservice teachers; interviews and conversations with teachers; essays about classroom issues; andreflections on teaching goals and processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review for Effective Methods of Teaching Business Education in the 21st Century
Effective Methods of Teaching Business Education in the 21st Century (No. 41)Effective Methods of Teaching Business Education in the 21st Century, NBEA 2003 Yearbook
As someone who is going to start teaching business classes in high school, this book was a great place to start to formulate a business curriculum and develop lesson plans to teach business.

Not only is this book a great place to start, but the book provides many ideas for class projects and lists many additional references to use in the formulation of business classes.

I liked how the book had a chapter on the different departments within a business, but I enjoyed learning about the background and current trends in teaching business at the high school level.I also appreciated how the book took basic teaching skills like planning, providing for different learning styles, managing the classroom, and assessing students and adapted them specifically for teaching business classes.

Product Description

For your students to be their best, you need to be at your best. Adrienne Mack-Kirschner, a National Board Certified teacher, has created a no-nonsense guide to good teaching that shows you how curriculum, organization, and mindfulness can combine to help make your classroom a place where kids go to learn and achieve, not just collect a grade.

In plain English, Mack-Kirschner gives you nuts-and-bolts advice on foundational but often difficult-to-understand teaching strategies like:

  • the teaching-assessment loop
  • brain-based teaching
  • classroom organization
  • motivating students
  • student portfolios
  • student-led conferences.

Mack-Kirschner further demonstrates how these concepts and a focus on learning come together to form a classroom management environment so seamless you and your students won't even know it's there. Plus, she includes numerous reproducibles-checklists, forms, evaluations, and self-evaluations-that help you clearly establish goals and expectations, and help your students meet them.

"The single most important ingredient in student success," writes Adrienne Mack-Kirschner, "is the quality of the teacher." If you're a novice just starting out, Straight Talk for Today's Teacher gives you exactly what you need to become a mindful, responsive, effective teacher. Even if you're a veteran teacher, Straight Talk will show you how refocusing your practice can lead to an energetic new teacher-student dynamic that actively engages your class. Either way, Adrienne Mack-Kirschner will help you become the best teacher you can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for new or experienced teachers!!!
I had this book assigned to me by my professor during my practicum for my Masters. This is one great piece of work that really gave me a lot to think about in terms of my classroom management, instruction, etc. My wife is a ten year teaching veteran and NBCT-qualified. She almost "stole it" from to use for her PLC meetings. I highly recommend this book, for the money it is a great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening!
I highly respect Ms. Mack-Kirschner and her new book. Her insights are extremely eye-opening, and since I've read the book I have never looked at teaching in the same way. I look at my classroom now with a different set of eyes.

Her suggestions are practical, time-saving (in the long run), and promote accountability in both teachers and students. ... Read more
