4-0 out of 5 stars Alex not Axel
There is a misprint in the book we received. The name is supposed to be Alex---not Axel.

Amazon is replacing. No problem. Was great to deal with as far as exchanging.

As far as the book itself.Great story. My son loves it.My children love these Classic Unabridged books. They have several in the series and the books are very nice.In the back of each book is a set of questions for the reader. As a parent, home schooling mom, and book collector----I really like these books. They have many more titles for boys and for girls. We have bought some from Vision Forum and some from Amazon.

This is a great classic novel. It is a fun read and much better than the movies based on it.Give yourself a treat and read this book regardless of what you might have thought of the Hollywood versions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
Over the decades, I have read "Journey ..." a few times. Despite the years since it was written, it holds up quite well as a fantasy / Adventure! It is an enjoyable book and I think today's teenagers would like it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only book in Vampire Earth series w/o a Kindle Version
I've enjoyed reading this entire series, recently purchased a Kindle, and I'm adding the set to my Kindle. However, I discovered that only this book, #4 in the series, is unavailable for Kindle while all other 7 are available. This doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Valentine's Rising"makes up for "Thunderbolt"
I'm glad I'm not the only reviewer who didn't like book 3.I disliked it so much I let this entry in the Vampire Earth series wither on my 'to be read' pile for over a year...If I had known how good this was going to be I would've read it much, much, sooner.

This picks up right after Book 3 ends, and tells the harrowing tale of Valentine's journey North, where he discovers that much has changed since he went to sea and found the Quickwood.Valentine and company infiltrate a strong group of Quislings and work to get the Southern Company back some of their land that was taken away. There is lots of action in this book, and perhaps the single most horrifying moment I've read about in a book since Stephen King came out with 'Salem's Lot.'The pacing and tension never flag, and the new characters we meet are incredibly well-drawn.

This is an excellent addition to the series, and I suspect I'll be reading book 5 before February is over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
If you like the Vampire Earth series or if you like E.E. Knight then you will enjoy this book

5-0 out of 5 stars No Kindle edition?
This is probably one of the best books in this series! My only issue is that there is no Kindle Edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books of the series so far
I went back and re-read this book after reading the recent Winter Duty release (a good 4 star book in this series, I think it may just be the Tale of the Thunderbolt that leads to another book like this one), and I was struck by how strong this book is.The enemies of this book can't just be shot in the face. They're long term villains that can be beaten or even get a bloody nose, but they will be back. You can feel it in Knight's writing. The fragile nature of the resistance is at the behest of the fractured nature of the enemy.Humanity's hopes and dreams require honorable men to do marginally or very dishonorable things to their enemies. This is an excellent book, with bears and wolves and yes cats who cut and shape and claw and bring a semblance of justice.Heroes in Knight's world don't have to wear capes.Capes are for the bad guys who get a quick jab from a spike of quickwood. ... Every decent human being needs to read this book...it will open your eyes...make you aware, but bring you deep happiness. This book grounded me and Eagle Man's words are powerful, he gets his urgent message across.
It's a must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best
This is one of the best books that I have read. I believe it is McGaa's best and his most insightful. I highly recommend it if one is interested in the tribal people of this land and the red road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent easy to read and follow book, that is well written and organized. This book has a lot to teach, very rich in natural spirituality with some religious beliefs. Much of the practice is unnecessary, but it can be helpful. Mainly many are disconnected from the Divine Source and of nature, and such ceremonies is best for those people.

As a wisdom seeker, much of the belief of dirction of rain, snow, and so forth one knows isn't correct. Since rain and snow can come from the south direction as well SW, W, NW. But if one is a wisdom seeker, then one must keep in mind to respect all beliefs. One does not need to smoke a pice pipe for prayers, one can just do smudging. One does not have to do a sun dance to connect with nature and pray to the Creator, all one needs is meditations. But this book is very rich in knowledge, and is important for one to read on the importance of reconnecting to nature and Great Spirit. Like the Tao teaches, those who are diconnected from the Tao will suffer. It is same wisdom on will find in Native American Spirituality. Which is truth, but one has to meditate on this knowledge for any real, or else it is just a belief and not truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars mother earth spirituality
this book is very educational as far as a personal account of what it is like to walk the red path in todays society. Gives a background in historical knowledge and where certain beleifs/customs arose from, and actual events that took place. the first couple chapters are more of a history lesson on how the native americans were pushed out of their homelands, and then relates the struggle to keep the traditional beleifs and traditions alive. most of the ceremonial traditions are coverd in great detail so the reader would be able to attend and know what to expect. overall the book was quite refreshing and well written, focused more on a historical versus modern day spin on native american ceremony/traditions.

Product Description

Poems vivifying nature have gripped people for centuries. From Biblical times to the present day, poetry has continuously drawn us to the natural world. In this thought-provoking book, John Felstiner explores the rich legacy of poems that take nature as their subject, and he demonstrates their force and beauty. In our own time of environmental crises, he contends, poetry has a unique capacity to restore our attention to our environment in its imperiled state. And, as we take heed, we may well become better stewards of the earth.

In forty brief and lucid chapters, Felstiner presents those voices that have most strongly spoken to and for the natural world. Poets—from the Romantics through Whitman and Dickinson to Elizabeth Bishop and Gary Snyder—have helped us envision such details as ocean winds eroding and rebuilding dunes in the same breath, wild deer freezing in our presence, and a person carving initials on a still-living stranded whale.

Sixty color and black-and-white images, many seen for the first time, bear
out visually the environmental imagination this book discovers—a poetic
legacy more vital now than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars "nature is never spent"-G.M.Hopkins;Review by Dr. Don Foran
For a number of years I've taught a course at The Evergreen State College titled "How Poetry Saves the World." Felstiner's 2009 book, "Can Poetry Save the Earth?" certainly caught my attention. And he delivers the goods.Packed with excellent poems and astute observations, this book is superbly crafted. Fine photographs and illustrations enhance the exploration.Poets like Gerard Manley Hopkins, Stanley Kunitz, Marianne Moore, D.H.Lawrence, Wallace Stevens (somewhat surprisingly), and Robinson Jeffers are cited, discussed, illuminated.Seamus Heaney and Mary Oliver are given short shrift, but even Homer nods. The reader feels, by the book's conclusion, that he has been blackberry picking with Galway Kinnell, slurping maple syrup with Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon at Eagle Pond Farm, and apple-picking with Robert Frost in a New England orchard. The immediacy of nature, the loveliness of earth, "the sense and spirit that poetry can awaken" (Felstiner's words) give us hope that humankind can recover "the dearest freshness deep down things" which Hopkins, in 1878, prophetically called us to attend to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read
In each chapter of this beautifully written book, Felstiner walks with his readers through great nature poems from every age, connecting us at once with our literary legacy, our language and our place in the natural world.Vivid biographical portraits of the poets and quotes from journals, letters, interviews and other sources bring the poets to life as they celebrate and fear for their treasured landscapes. With its deep clear readings of poems and detailed discussion of poetic craft, this book is a must-read for anyone with interests in art and environmentalism.I bought a second copy to give to my daughter, a college freshman, as she assumes the ecological responsibilities that are falling to her and her generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
If you love this, you'll also love Sow by Tanya Rucosky Noakes and Into the Cool: The Collected Poems of David Saxton, 1992 Through 2007.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iconic book for lyrical nature poetry
Few literati write with such authority and gentle sensitivity on lyrical poetry. Gifted writer and commentator, John Felstiner also has a seer's keen edge in identifying meaningful words in the poet's lexicon on nature; his voice imparts a needed edge of prophetic augury in the possibly saving medium of poetry for the earth. This book also slyly reminds us how much we love to take along favorite ramblers' guides through ferny places with this apt title: Can Poetry Save the Earth? A Field Guide to Nature Poems. For several centuries, British Lake Poets and Transcendentalists offered early gleams of Romantic awe for nature, but Felstiner ably demonstrates this continuing tradition in a secular present, knowing its responsibility.

In his careful readings of Emily Dickinson, William Carlos Williams, Marianne Moore, Pablo Neruda, Denise Levertov, W. S. Merwin, and many others, Felstiner hones his voice on the alchemy of image in the almost animistic appreciation of poets for the beauty of the earth. Whether in garden or wilderness, by glacier or waterfall, rocky desert or mountain shadow, lake or fen, Felstiner's distilled biographies of poets' deepest inspired communions with landscape and topography - as, for example, with Neruda at Machu Picchu and Kaufman in Jerusalem - show his depth of understanding the most subtle word choice in heeding poetic muses. This book will be iconic for all who love lyrical wisdom and the profundity underlying its imagery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, John Felstiner
I just picked up my copy of Felstiner's new book.I have long been an adminrer of his biography and translations of Paul Celan, and it seems like that deep knowledge of poetry and sympathetic response to suffering in all its forms has led him on this great journey into centuries of nature poetry.Very heavy on quotations, and likely to send readers back into the library and elsewhere on Amazon to find a million other books--and out walking and seeing better in our own watersheds--which is a great thing for a literary critic to do.A wonderful contribution to the field! ... Product Description
This first book from Chicago author Chris Ware is a pleasantly-decorated view at a lonely and emotionally-impaired "everyman" (Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth), who is provided, at age 36, the opportunity to meet his father for the first time. An improvisatory romance which gingerly deports itself between 1890's Chicago and 1980's small town Michigan, the reader is helped along by thousands of colored illustrations and diagrams, which, when read rapidly in sequence, provide a convincing illusion of life and movement. The bulk of the work is supported by fold-out instructions, an index, paper cut-outs, and a brief apology, all of which concrete to form a rich portrait of a man stunted by a paralyzing fear of being disliked.

1-0 out of 5 stars I don't get it
I'm not talking about the artwork, everyone knows that is beautiful.
I just don't understand where is the pleasure of this book. It's depressing, sad and boring.

3-0 out of 5 stars wth
i am extremely displeased with this product. it was brand new when i received it, and i started reading it for my american novel class. but as i was reading, the binding began to tear until finally the whole cover came off! the binding for this book is just too depressing and embarrassing to be associated with this wonderful graphic novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Brechtian Disconnect
When I started this book, I said to myself, this seems like something I might do if I had more focus and talent.I am not entirely sure if that is true now, or even if that were true would it be something to recommend the title to others.Nevertheless, I did not write this graphic novel, a man by the name of Chris Ware did. He's a cartoonist that was at least one time based in the fine city of Chicago.

First off, even though the subtitle references `The Smartest Kid on Earth,' the novel is a story about adulthood. We see three generations of Jimmy Corrigans fight through the loneliness of adulthood. There are not cartoon adventures, no redemption. Most everything that happens is bad for the characters.I for one did not relate to the characters as feel empathy for them.

The art, I think, helps enforce this sense of loneliness and alienation. The panels are mostly small and illogically ordered. The reader is confronted with relearning the patterns of the storytelling. It is almost a Brechtian disconnect, where you are always aware that you are encountering an artificial construct. This may not be the cup of tea for everyone, but for what it is, it is well done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad, depressing, emotional outlet for...someone
The book is beautifully designed and drawn. And, techniques of film are used successfully to tell the story through 'thought bubble' equivalents, and flashbacks. But, in the end, the story is just sad, does not redeem itself, and doesn't leave you with any significant insights. For this, I see this work as simply the venting or emotional outlet for the author, either actual or imagined. Not too different from Woody Allen's simply using his art as an outlet for his neuroses (with a very few exceptions).

My kids were picking up this book, attracted to the colorful images, so I threw it in the garbage. I couldn't think of anyone who I would want to share this with, and certainly didn't want my kids looking at it. I truly hope this is not the experiences of the author, relived through this sad and abused character.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad but True
One of the "Must see" graphic novel. Provided by the syntetic and accurate drawing line of Chris Ware. Retrospective journey with Jimmy Corrigan, looking at his lost chances and not utilised bargains of his looser life. Meet with incarnation of AntyHero everyone has inside and face with: "You Fail everything" - Sad but true.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction
I pick this book because I think it's important to know about the history and structure of paganism beyond the basic books say. I've been pagan for almost 6 years and still found this book very interesting. I put 4 stars because despite thatIt's a very good book, the first part seems to me a little boring, not bad, just boring.
One of the things I likethe most is that it's focused from a nuetral point of view whose purpose is to inform and to eliminate prejudices. Unlike many other books out there this one is not focused to convert the reader into a pagan or guide him/her to "start in the craft" which makes that the book takes a very differentcontex.
For people who want to know whether paganism is his/her spiritual path or not, this is certainly a very good guide and for those who already are, it's an opportunity to look back and analyze how it is that we have become so.
I also think it is a recommended book for parents or families stubborn to not let their children or family practice paganism for their prejudices, so If you have relatives with whom they have misunderstandings about the concept of what being a pagan means, this is a very good book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Seller
I HIGHLY recommend buying from this seller. The product arrived in no time, and the book's quality was perfect. She is the best I've ever done business with! A+++++!!! Thanks again!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory book on Paganism!
This book is wonderful! I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about pagan beliefs.Whether the reader is personally interested for their own spirituality or if he/she is interested in learning about Paganism as a general interest (maybe a friend or relative is pagan?), the reader will find a wealth of information that is easy to read and interesting!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful
As someone who is exploring new spiritual paths, I found this book to the honest, insightful and thought-provoking. This book contains all of the basics I needed to know and understand about paganism, including all of the social implications of making such a conversion. I appreciated some of the exercises they suggested, such as making a belief braid to symbolically weave one's belief systems into something that works for you. They also address the issue of people thinking that paganism is equivalent to satan worship (it is not) and how pagans ever wound up with such a label. Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
I bought this book because I am a novice that is interested in paganism. What is it? What isn't it?This book answered those questions with a minimum of new age nonsense. It reads like a 101 college textbook. It has journal questions along with questions to probe your belief structures. After this book you will not have the structure to base a spirtuality around, but should have a good idea what direction to head in, or stay away from.Very informative. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The Earth-Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book is the first to promote the benefits of both passive solar energy and earth sheltering in greenhouse design. This combination results in greenhouses which need no additional heating. The captured sun s energy and that which is stored in the earth is enough for successful year round harvest. Gone are costly heating bills. Gone is the squander of non-renewable energy resources. This is because above-ground greenhouses get natural heat at night from only one side, the floor. They lose heat from the other five sides. The properly designed earth-sheltered greenhouse is naturally warmed at night -- and in the winter -- from five sides and loses heat from only one. The ratio is exactly reversed. This book has it all. It takes you step by step through the construction of an inexpensive greenhouse which may be built with either newly purchased or salvaged building materials for pennies on the dollar. It explains the author s unique Post/Shoring/Polyethylene construction methods and design techniques which Countryside Magazine called Revolutionary... innovative and ingenious...a totally different concept. In its way it is both as simple and as amazingly ingenious as a paperclip. The book deals heavily with design so that you may custom build your own greenhouse perfect for your particular climate and needs. It tells you how to use gravity to warm your winter plants; how to effectively capture and store the sun s heat; how to make up for poor sunlight free of cost; how to automatically vent without power; how to choose the best glazing for your project; where to find free building materials; when to use heat tubes and when not to; how to use a root cellar in tandem with the greenhouse; where to use insulation with wonderful effect (and where to absolutely avoid it); how to deal with plant pests organically; what animals should be living in your greenhouse; and hundreds of more tips. The Earth-Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Bookhas 230 pages with nearly 200 illustrations, photos, diagrams, lists, charts and drawings. It contains all the information you need to free you from the pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, waxed, and E-coli laden, genetically modified and irradiated supermarket produce. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Earth Sheltered Solar Greenhouse Book
The book came quickly and in excellent condition. For now, I am day dreaming as I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lotta work!
This book would be very helpful to a strong, able-bodied person who is willing to work pretty hard, not only finding (or buying and paying for) materials, but serious digging as well as doing the building. It probably would be a little easier if two people were working together on it. I, on the other hand, would have to pay someone else to do the work, which probably takes it all the way up to "too expensive" and even if it relies on solar heating and earth's constancy, I could never recover the cost if I grew my own vegetables for 40 years.

If I were 35 years old instead of 75, however, I would enjoy the challenge of doing it myself, perhaps with the help of one of my children.
The book makes sense, and his advice is excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intriquing concept...
The first thing that strikes me about this book is the extremely low quality of production. The second thing that grabs my attention is the $25 price tag - for a soft cover book with 230 pages and very few photos. The photos it does have are of extremely poor quality and half of them are from the 70's. On page 183, the author describes himself as "an irresponsible, frequently-intoxicated hippy". With the price he is charging for the book, be must be drinking Chateau Lafite. I have to take away 1 star for price gouging.

Having said that, the author seems to be just about the only person around advocating earth-sheltered greenhouses. The concept is simple and I have to wonder why it's not more common. In fact, it's so simple that one only needs to read the article by the author on the Mother Earth News Website. I read that article and found the concept intriguing, so I bought the book, expecting some formal, in-depth research on the subject. All the evidence in the book supporting the concept is from the author's personal experience and vague "recollection". I would like to see some university or professional research on the subject.I am in the market for my first greenhouse, but I'm still undecided after reading this. Take away 1 more star for lack of formal test results.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gotta' Love Those Gophers
I ordered this book on the recommendation of Rob Roy.By the time you finish reading this book, you will like Mike Oehler. The book is well written and very entertaining -- especially the gopher stories. While entertaining, though, there's just not a lot of meat here. The contents, without the humor, could have been boiled down to a technical paper. If the price was one third what it is, that would not bother me.I have yet to see most of this information anywhere else (but it might be I'm not looking hard enough). For the price, I expected a lot more. You gotta' spread the love to those gophers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Building your own Greenhouse--Alternatives
Outdated ideas from the mid-70s. It's time to bring this book up to the 21st century. There's a lot of interest in being more self-sufficient and "green." However, unless put on a 100 mile forced march I don't intend to dig a hole in the mountainside and sling a haphazard greenhouse together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Theory. Great research.
This is a very plausible theory on "How We Came To Be". While I am not going to start worshipping the Nefilim, Sitchin's research is exhaustive and his conclusions are certainly food for thought.

the item was as advertised, but more importantly, my friend for
whom i bought it, was pleasantly surprised at how soon it arrived
after the order was placed. that's why i title this review SATISFACTION.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make Time for This!
There are three kinds of time: Divine, Celestial and Earth. Most of the megaliths around the globe were astronomical computers to determine months, days, or even periods of time thousands of years into the future. These ancient civilizations knew how to determine solar dates like the equinox or solstice, and even more complex time periods based on lunar calculations. Some computed all of these.

The age of these megaliths can be determined by our knowledge of changes in the tilt of the earth, and it shows their construction dated back thousands of years B.C. These civilizations had unheard of knowledge of astronomy and mathematics - not to mention the actual construction of these megaliths out of rocks weighing in the tons, and with precision we cannot even match today.

Similarities between these structures, including Stonehenge, and others built in the far reaches of the Earth in places like the mountains in Peru, indicate the same architect! How could that be possible unless we accept Sitchin's theories on how this advanced civilization of "gods" came here from Nibiru and gave us the information? If he's wrong, how could these different races on opposite ends of the Earth each have the skies divided into 12 arbitrary units, the Zodiac, and have practically the same symbols representing each?

The coincidences seem to keep mounting. When Divine time is reconciled to Earth time using Nibiru's orbit around earth of 3,600 years to the number of Earth years in each house of the Zodiac of 2,160 years, you get 1.6666, the golden ratio - Fibonacci numbers. And there's more.Every chapter has something new.

I know, don't tell me... Stonehenge was a burial ground. Yeah right.Just shut up and buy the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Earth Day Everyday!
The kids (20 months and 3 1/2) and I both love this authors illustrations. His very simple but fun book "Funny Faces" has been a favorite for years. The Earth Book is a basic but enjoyable introduction to taking care of this great Earth. My son loves the silliness of the last item in the ten things you can do to help the earth - "put your underwear in the freezer when it is cold outside."I think this one line is what makes him request the book be read to him over and over. But hey whatever it takes to start teaching him these important and responsible habits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caring about the environment can be tons of fun
I LOVE this author's work and always look forward to what he does next. I certainly wasn't disappointed with THE EARTH BOOK as it shows kids in unique simple, fun ways what they can do to help. One of the pages even tears out to become a fun and useful poster. There are a lot of kid's book about the environment, but this one really stands out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Earth Day and Deep Discussions
Todd's simple art work and words can lead to deep discussions. As we study food chains, water cycle, and change, this book introduces concepts and relationships we need to discuss with children. And Todd's books are just FUN to read or have read to you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent read
Good little book. More like a little carry along, not a real book, but it is a good one to hand out to others when you are finished with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars To my surprise
I was surprised to find out it was a very small "pocket sized" book, really wanted a complete book. This one wasn't what I was looking for.I did find 3 more of the larger books for my friends since I already owned one of my own.Guess what, before I purchased the books I made sure of the page count before ordering them.Live and learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
The best purchase I have ever made. How would you spend the days of your life if you doesn't know your purpose? Thanks to the truths of this book, and with the Holy Spirit in my life, now I know what I am doing here on earth.

2-0 out of 5 stars What on Earth Am I Here For?
What on Earth Am I Here For?this is a BOOKLET so beware, here I thought I was getting the book as mentioned....very unhappy about the description put on Amazon books

3-0 out of 5 stars Tolerable but unremarkable...
This booklet is basically a collection of excerpts from Rick Warren's wildly popular "The Purpose-Driven Life."Having not read PDL, I cannot attest to how much of the significance of that book translates into this truncated version."What on Earth Am I Here For?" is simple, easy to read, and filled with some good thoughts. It's not intellectual or especially profound, but lays out a series of helpful points. It is Scripturally-based and quotes the Bible throughout. However, some will be annoyed by the fact that many different translations are used, and the passages are quoted without specific reference within the text itself (it typically says something like "the Bible says..." and uses an endnote for the specific reference). But for an intended audience of non-Christians, skeptics, and the unconvinced, this approach is fine.

My complaints are two-fold.First, though not nearly as ridiculously as other reviewers suggest, this booklet does occasionally feel like a commercial for other "Purpose-Driven Life" materials. If this work does not stand on its own and requires further investigation of other books and resources, then it shouldn't have been published.

Also, "What on Earth Am I Here For?" is a little too succinct for my tastes.I'm all for simplicity and abbreviation, when appropriate, but this booklet covers a bit too much ground too quickly, and feels rushed and insufficient at times.Though it was fine, I simply would have liked more. ... Product Description

In today's frenetic society, people rarely develop intimate friendships. Instead, they spend their lives essentially disconnected from others, rushing through life content with brief visits and casual conversations. But what if one were to develop a community, a spiritual community, of people who walked with and supported each other through life'sjourney? A community of real friends who listened to each other's personal tragedies without merely trying to fix the problems, who encouraged and nurtured each others strengths, and who accepted people for who they really are, instead of the image they try to portray. In The Safest Place on Earth, Larry Crabb explores such a place, where God can heal disconnected people and allow them to reconnect with each other and, ultimately, with Him.

3-0 out of 5 stars An uncomfortable read
This book was rather uncomfortable for me to read. Not that I found the language difficult. What I found uncomfortable was the way Dr. Crabb goes about building his ideas and principles. He relies heavily on anecdotes and uses quotes from prominent people (IE CS Lewis) to help illustrate his points. And not enough on Scripture. It is as if I were to build you a house on top of a skyscraper, instead of building it on a foundation of it's own. The skyscraper might be safe...but it's man made and anything man made is prone to decay and error. Not so with the word of God.

Matthew 5:18 (NASB) 18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

And a Biblical example is found in

Acts 17:11 (NASB) 11Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.

It says they examined Scriptures daily for the truth of God. Not their life experiences or what other teachers said.

My review might make you think that Dr. Crabb doesn't use scripture at all and that would be false. To his benefit he does sprinkle a few verses here and there (more so in the beginning of the book).

So the methodology is bad...is the overall message inline with Scripture? I would give a hesitant "Yes." But I would not build any doctrine or teachings on it. It as if you were to make a copy of a copy that was a copy of another copy. When you do that, you loose clarity and form. I'd rather go straight to the Word of God and see what He says.

All in all, I would say this book is good for a leisure read, as if you're reading a fantasy novel. It helps to put things in perspective and helps you be less judgmental. It is not a "How To" manual. Paraphrasing Dr. Crabb: Spiritual community is just that, it is the work of the Spirit of God. It cannot be contained or broken down into steps that will yield results. Instead what I feel this book does is to help you get into the mindset to allow the Spirit to work. And as with most if not all work in His Kingdom, it begins with prayer.

Conclusion: 3 Stars because it does contain some Biblical truths; sparse throughout lots of filler anecdotes and stories. It is nearly 200 pages, which I feel could have been shortened down to 60 or so. The title is a bit misleading, as it makes you think it is a "How To" manual (at least that's what I thought when I first saw it).

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Images
I started this book in the middle of my fall semester, i think in october. But i was drawn to book by its title, The Safest Place On Earth. A Professor i had quoted the book in a page of his notes, and i stirred my curiosity. So i finally got myself to buy it in October, and just finished it yesterday (January 21st). It is kind of how i read, i read a lot of books at once, and i am continuously picking one up and putting it down for an extended time. None the less, this book was huge! After reading some chapters, i really was convicted and hurt, and would be faced with things going on in my personal life by the message of his book. After reading the chapters on the Lower Room, i was honestly faced with the reality of my Flesh (The Lower Room). It was refreshing then to go into the chapter on the Upper Room, then the chapter on the Upper Room Furnishings. And even in those chapters, i still was confronted with conviction. Especially as an RA, my conviction for developing Spiritual Community is huge.

Ive been reading a lot of books that talk along the same idea as this book did, namely the books who emphasize in Spiritual Formation. I would recommend books by David Benner "Surrender to Love" "The Gift of Being Yourself" "Desiring God's Will."

As a whole, i though this book had powerful images, namely the Upper and Lower room imagery that he illustrates in Part II of the book. When he moves into Part III of the book he uses the whole framework he created and pieces ends together, creating a network that gives the reader an image of Spiritual Community.

My favorite thing about this book, and i feel like Larry Crabb would say this, is that this book is not a manual for creating Spirit based community. He would, as the author point to the Holy Spirit as the creator of Spiritual Community. So overall, this book is great, it stimulates you as the reader to think about spiritual community, the gospel, and the church. But it shouldnt end with its final page, as people we should continue there in pursuit of the Spirit within us all.

pretty cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new look at "The Church"
If the church would only try to develop the relationship outline in Mr. Crabb's book it would be "The safest place on earth"

1-0 out of 5 stars Fancy words, but impractical for spiritual guidance.
Our Bible study group began a series based on this book. After painfully going through 2/3 of the book we finally voted to get rid of it. In the past several years, we've alternated between studying the Bible and studying books and we've had many excellent and practical discussions that greatly helped our growth. This book was the first disappointment. The language is grand and fluffy, but despite earnest attempts and diligent discussion, we failed to glean anything from it that would be helpful in our spiritual walk. Your mileage may vary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True in Need in the Body
Genuine fellowship is a true need in the church, Crabb approaches the issue with a fresh perspective and helpful insights. ... Read more

Product Description

An earth-sheltered, earth-roofed home has the least impact upon the land of all housing styles, leaving almost zero footprint on the planet.

Earth-Sheltered Houses is a practical guide for those who want to build their own underground home at moderate cost. It describes the benefits of sheltering a home with earth, including the added comfort and energy efficiency from the moderating influence of the earth on the home’s temperature (keeping it warm in the winter and cool in the summer), along with the benefits of low maintenance and the protection against fire, sound, earthquake, and storm afforded by the earth. Extra benefits from adding an earth or other living roof option include greater longevity of the roof substrate, fine aesthetics, and environmental harmony.

The book covers all of the various construction techniques involved, including details on planning, excavation, footings, floor, walls, framing, roofing, waterproofing, insulation, and drainage. Specific methods appropriate for the inexperienced owner/builder are a particular focus and include:

  • Pouring one’s own footings and/or floor
  • The use of dry-stacked (surface-bonded) concrete block walls
  • Post-and-beam framing
  • Plank-and-beam roofing
  • Drainage methods and self-adhesive waterproofing membranes

The time-tested, easy-to-learn construction techniques described in Earth-Sheltered Houses will enable readers to embark upon their own building projects with confidence, backed up by a comprehensive resources section that lists all the latest products such as waterproofing membranes, types of rigid insulation, and drainage products that will protect the building against water damage and heat loss.

Rob Roy is a former contractor with 27 years of experience and 12 previous books to his credit, including Cordwood Building and Timber Framing for the Rest of Us. An expert on underground building, he founded the Earthwood Building School in 1981 with his wife, Jaki, and is frequently a speaker at events throughout North America.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I haven't had a chance to put any of the information in this book to practice. I am gathering information on "how to" project for my retirement. Right now, I'm looking for the piece of land. This book has great information for anyone looking to live off the land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and full of useful information
This Book is written with a great deal of personal affection. When reading you can tell that the author has made this kind of construction his major passion in life. He consistently refers to real building projects and shows not only how to do things right but mistakes to avoid. There is also a consistent thought about code, witch is important when doing alternative building.

5-0 out of 5 stars Specific, detailed, thoughtful: A real builder's guide.
Although not the most comprehensive collection of eco-building material and techniques, Rob Roy excels in this field of green building: cordwood, timber framing, and earth-sheltered passive solar homes. (worth checking his other books too) Lots of pictures and detailed step by step building process shown along with his narrative of design choices that revolve around salvaged materials, reducing waste and cost-effectiveness.

This is the most detailed earth-sheltered book to date for the owner/builder to have in hand to avoid big mistakes, even if you don't like cordwood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Technically useful
I found technically useful information in this book, drainage, waterproofing, insulation, etc.... I just think that they could include design examples of other succesful earth sheltered houses, since they only include two the author has designed, which I think are not aesthetically succesful. I am trying to be polite, they are horrible!

Product Description
The result of a five-year airborne odyssey across five continents and 60 countries, Earth from Above is the most revealing and spectacular portrait of our world ever created. From a heart-shaped mangrove forest in New Caledonia to a flock of red ibises in Venezuela, from a caravan of camels in Mauritania to Mt. Everest and Mammoth Hot Springs, renowned aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand presents striking color images that put our home planet in a whole new perspective. Produced under the sponsorship of UNESCO, the book is also a documentary record of the state of the world's fragile environment.

This vibrant new edition of the internationally acclaimed original features an updated design and nearly 60 stunning new photographs. All new captions and the addition of authoritative new texts by experts in various environmental fields illuminate Arthus-Bertand's monumental achievement. Amazon.com Review
Ecology, a science scarcely a century old, aims to give itspractitioners an approach to understanding how whole naturalsystems--for example, watersheds, deserts, and estuaries--work. Fewbooks translate this aim as well as Earth from Above, astunning collection of photographs that affords its viewers a windowinto the world's workings. It is something of a commonplace, forinstance, that the large-scale logging now being visited on theworld's rainforests is causing untold damage to tropical ecosystems. In French photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand's hands, this problem istranslated from arid fact to alarming image, giving immediate meaningto the statistics that underlie today's environmental headlines; hisphotographs of the ruins of rural Madagascar, where forests are beingcleared at a rate of 1,500 square kilometers (580 square miles)annually, are a sad case in point.

Arthus-Bertrand, working withthe support of UNESCO, has wandered the globe to gather thiscollection of more than 200 photographs, presented in a folioformat. The images are uniformly striking, whether of stalagmite-likefans of algae spreading into the Mediterranean Sea, farmers workingtheir fields in northern India, or destroyed Iraqi tanks littering thedeserts of Kuwait. The accompanying text, captions, and short essaysby some of France's leading scientists and social critics lendspecific depth to the images, which will cheer few readers--but thatwill shock, and educate, and, with luck, inspire closer attention tothe world around us. --Gregory McNamee ... I used this book to study for the Praxis II Earth and Space Science Content Knowledge test. I have never taken an earth science class in my life and I am confident that I passed the test. This book has a lot of good diagrams and charts that I memorized and used on the exam (they were very useful). It also acted as a nice guide of what topics I needed to review. Unfortunately, a large portion of this book explains things very poorly. I had to refer to different websites to understand a LOT of what was going on in this book, particularly in the area of weather.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's no Twilight
After finishing the Twilight Saga, and being disappointed by Breaking Dawn, I was desperate to find another paranormal ROMANCE that would feed my inner teen. The first time I read the f-bomb in Here on Earth made me slam the cover.I eventually skimmed the rest to find out what happens to the losers in this story, because I was sitting in the doctor's office, but cared not one single bit for the characters. As others have pointed out the similarities to Wuthering Heights are laughable and insulting. Heathcliff (WH)= Hollis/ Kathy(WH)=March/ Hindley(WH)= Alan/ Hareton(WH)=Hank.

A troubled 13 yr old orphan, Hollis, is brought to the house; the elder son, Alan treats him badly eventually sending him to the attic to live; The elder son becomes a drunk; The younger sister gets her foot stuck while spying on the rich family and while Heathcliff---er--I mean Hollis evades capture, Kathy---I mean March falls for the genteel life while spurning her "true" reckless, dangerous, troubled, "brother", Hollis; who then goes off to make his millions...Hollis then adopts his nephew by the elder son?I mean...please.I HATED THIS BOOK!Even though I am an adult, I don't need to read graphic "love" scenes. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but "thrusting"? Yuck.Give me the sweet, romantic, awesome dialogue in Twilight anytime. That was character development. That was layered. That made me understand the motivation of the characters. Here on Earth makes me understand why people say, "I hate reading!"

"Here on Earth"
by Alice Hoffman

Book Review by Jay Gilbertson

This New York Times best selling author of Practical Magic and an Oprah Book Club pick really did herself proud with "Here on Earth." Though it was indeed a page-turner, the one complaint that drove me crazy was the fact that Hoffman is a bona fide Head-Hopper. In the world of writing, this is considered a huge no no. What HH means is that within a chapter the author hops from one character's head (or viewpoint) to another, making it challenging as to figuring out just whose story is it? What Hoffman does do very well, is create a really interesting cast of inter-connected characters and paints small town life wonderfully well.

The reader is thrown into the lives of March and Gwen Murray, mother and daughter, as they return to the town where March grew up. March has come back to bury her foster mother, but we soon learn there is another reason she decides to stay; Hollis. He was March's teenage crush and one day he literally disappeared. March eventually moved away, got married to a scientist and had Gwen, but when she sees Hollis again after all those years, all bets are off and they have an affair. A totally twisted, abusive, lustful affair that has doomed written all over it, not to mention the rather obvious Wuthering Heights under current woven throughout. Heathcliff meet your match.

Hollis was once an outcast teenager, a troubled runaway that March's father decided to adopt. Now he's the wealthiest man in town and seems to own just about everything in and surrounding their sorry New England burg. What Hollis doesn't have is a heart and I have to say, he is one of the nastiest men I hope to never meet. Hoffman did a terrific job in weaving and connecting the cast of characters not only to one another but also to the town's deep and rich history. The author also managed to toss in the possibility of true love, even though it happens to be between fifteen-year-old Gwen and her cousin!

All in all, Hoffman took Wuthering Heights and simply gave it a new face and I honestly think that any author that can swing that is worth giving a read. This is a story of love and hate and how sometimes the happiest ending just isn't in the cards. Oh, and there's some magic stuff that happens, (not telling) a horse with insight, a real Devils Corner and some unsavory thoughts on what can happen when you think you have everything and yet nothing is enough. If this book were a real live person, I would highly suggest some really serious therapy...

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Is Complicated
Here On Earth by Alice Hoffman is an Oprah's Book Club book. Let me start by saying that I usually do not read books from Oprah's list. They are usually just way too depressing. However, this was recommended to me by a good friend who usually has great reading taste so I decided that I would give it a try--as usual, I was not disappointed.

Ms. Hoffman spins an extremely complex tale of love. Love of all kinds; first love, friends, true love, family, young love, and sometimes those kinds of loves that are all consuming and even at times self-destructing.

March Murray, the main character returns with her teenage daughter to her small hometown in Massachusetts, after being gone for 19 years, for the funeral of her family's housekeeper and, basically, the only real mother that March has ever known. In returning to her past, March has to deal with her "first love" and maybe her only love -- Hollis, a boy she has loved since she first laid eyes on him at the age of 11. What Hollis and March experience is a love that is so strong that it consumes you. What March must find out is if she can survive it.

As you get familiar with Hollis and March, you will find yourself rooting for the Hollis that March sees, the Hollis that no one else knows. But at other times you will find yourself siding with March's daughter Gwen and her best friend Susie, in just wanting to kick Hollis' teeth in.

However, if you read this story carefully you can learn a lot about love, not through the story's main characters of March and Hollis, but from the slew of other characters that the author uses to gives us different views of love and what it really means to love and be loved. How would you deal with a lover's betrayal, domestic violence, a lover who doesn't return your love, a cheat? It's easy to say "I would do...." But when actually in the situation, sometimes love really is blind or maybe it just sees it differently. Ms. Hoffman does a great job of showing this through each and every one of her characters.

Sometimes it's hard to watch someone be involved in a self-destructive love. Your advice is neither taken nor wanted. This is also true of someone who is in love but refuses to really see what love is either because through their childhood they have watched love hurt someone close to them or they have been hurt by love themselves. By showing us love from so many angles and voices, Ms. Hoffman lets us see that there is something to be learned from many different encounters in love.

A book that can pull at your heart strings and still offer you the opportunity to step outside of yourself and examine how you view love and walk for a little while in someone else's shoes is well worth the read.

My only complaint is that the ending left you hanging slightly in regards to some of the characters. This is not entirely a bad thing though, as it gave me the opportunity to let my imagination explore where I wanted their love to take them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Ending
When March is eleven years old, her father returns from a business trip with a homeless thirteen-year-old he's picked up off of the streets of Boston.March is immediately taken with this boy, Hollis, even though her older brother Alan hates him on sight.

Hollis is a wary teen, easily offended and bent on vengeance.Nonetheless, March is absolutely smitten with him, and the two have only eyes for each other. When March's father dies several years later and Alan inherits everything, he does what is in his power to make Hollis' life miserable. As soon as Hollis is able, he takes off.A moment of hesitation by March means she is left behind, waiting until she simply can't wait anymore to see if Hollis will ever return for her.She starts a new life without him.

Twenty years later March returns to her childhood home to attend the funeral of the housekeeper who raised her.Her somewhat-troubled fifteen-year-old daughter comes with her, but March's husband remains at home across the country.By now Hollis has returned to town, triumphantly rich.He has buried a wife and son, adopted his nemesis Alan's son, and has purchased much of the land in town.Yet he is still incomplete without March. He fully expects her to fall for him when she returns. She seems to expect the same. But they are no longer children, living without consequences, and in their time apart their relationship has grown very complex.

I loved the language of this book; the writing is beautiful and lyrical.I loved reading the descriptions of the characters' thoughts, of the landscape, of the environment that was so all-consuming.The plot of this story was interesting, too.It was heartbreaking to read about a woman who felt like the only thing that had ever really mattered in her life had slipped away.It was equally heartbreaking to read how casually she was willing to throw away everything else that mattered in her life.

I wish I'd had a chance to get to know these characters a little better, though, to see how the boy March loved had turned into such a nasty man, to see how Alan had fallen so far, and especially to find out how things could possibly be wrapped up at the end of the book.I felt as though the story ended at a crucial point, when so many of the characters were on the brink of something new, possibly something redeeming.I needed a little more time with this book than the author gave.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hated This Book
Boy oh boy.Seems like everything I read these days on Oprah's approved reading list is depressing. This book is no exception.Maybe I just like a little happiness in my books because this one did nothing but drag me down. The characters left much to the imagination, since the author's style apparently doesn't fill in a lot of the blanks there.One-dimensional cardboard stereotypical characters and misery is all I got out of this read.Tired of reading about hopelessness, cruelty and despair with no redemption at the end. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quick Report on "Earth Science" by Tarbuck & Lutgens
Standard introductory text, above average illustrations, lucid explanations and drawings. An excellent text to study up on if you are taking geology courses, or just interested in this subject.Would that all such material on this subject were as well written.Occasionally drags a bit. 'Nuff said.

Almost the same exact text as the 12th edition, but $120 cheaper. Trust me, it's well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Earth Science
The condition of the book is good, not pristine, but everything intact and durable.
The content of the book is good for entry level earth science education.Easy to understand and fairly concise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Same as new edition
I bought the old edition for only $10 while everyone else in my class bought the new edition for $130. There isn't really a difference in the editions. The review questions are all the same. All they did was add a couple new "HD" pictures. The other different thing is the new edition moves chapter 8 to chapter 7. So all they did was flip flop two chapters. Then comes the cd that comes with it. The cd in this edition only works on your computer as it is a cd rom, the one with comes with the new edition is a dvd, so it works with everything. So overall, you can see the differences are very small. If ever you need this book do yourself a favor and save at least $100 buying this edition instead of the new edition. ... Read more
