Conquest Of The New World - Review Taverns let you recruit explorers. The general level of challenge is enough tomake you think the hardest challenge in Conquest of the new world is to play http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/reviews/pc/may96/cnw.html
Extractions: DEVELOPER/Quicksilver To play some games you need a fair whack of patience and tolerance, and Conquest of the New World is a prime example. Interplay's attempt to wrap a challenging strategy game around the age of New World exploration and empire building has produced a somewhat lethargic game, one with a rather clumsy and awkward user interface, yet one which I have some difficulty pulling myself away from. The end of the stirring FMV intro as you make landfall in the New World The game's obvious competitor is Microprose's Colonization , and while Colonization perhaps plays a little better on the surface (it, after all, uses a similar presentation style to Civilization II ) there is much more depth to Interplay's offering, which features some novel ideas behind the clunky interface. The game packaging is fine and there's a well-written 70-plus page manual included (which rather inexcusably is lacking an index). Installation is simple enough, taking just over 30Mb of hard disk space. However, there is a problem with the sound in Conquest of the New World which means that to get acceptable performance you either need to copy the 34Mb sound file from the CD to hard disk, or play without sound. And if you play sound from the hard disk, there's a constant chug from your disk as the background effects are sucked off and played. This can be a little disconcerting to say the least;

Extractions: Passageways: True Tales of Adventure for Young Explorers website Part 3 This unit plan is the third of a three-part unit plan, though it can be used separately. This lesson leads students through the Passageways website and requires that they read to compare and contrast the motivations and accomplishments of two explorers. The questions follow the flow of information on the site, and are intended to demonstrate that each explorer, while being a strong, driven individual, was also a product of his time. Students may present their findings to the class at the next session. The time required for this lesson is one 50-minute session. Students can work as a class, in pairs or in groups. The National Library of Canada's Passageways website provides young learners with an idea of what it was like to venture into uncharted territory and face unknown dangers. Written and structured for children, the website is designed to be easy to use either in the classroom or at home. Extractions: Comment: This is classified as Juvenile historical fiction. Elizabeth Tilley was left an orphan at age 14, when her parents died the first winter. She married John Howland in 1623. The author states that "while the events surrounding the disappearance and presumed drowning of Dorothy Bradford are true, Elizabeth Tilley's involvement and the subsequent secret are entirely fictional." Recommended for ages 8-12. Comment: In 1940, N.C. Wyeth painted a series of murals about the Pilgrims for New York's Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Fourteen were completed before Wyeth's death in a car accident in 1945. Wyeth's paintings were idyllic and exhibited a highly romanticized vision of Pilgrim life. These murals have been reproduced in picture-book format. Using primary sources, San Souci's text was well researched, accurate and packed with information that tends to balance any of Wyeth's historical inaccuracies such as hat buckles, starched collars, western Indians. The book was dedicated to "the Schoolteachers of America." The endpapers of the book are copies of the Mayflower's original passenger list, courtesy of the Plimoth Plantation. Whether you are an art lover or/and a historian this is another excellent book to add to your library.
