I need it!" A Course in Language Teaching: Practice and Theory This text provides a solid grounding in language teaching. I taught ESL as a volunteer in South Africa, and I worked as a second language teacher in a Canadian grade school. I cannot speak first-hand about the tribulations and rewards (both financial and personal) of teaching in Japan, Taiwan or South Korea. Stories abound of people flitting off to Japan or Korea and returning a year later with tens of thousands of dollars in the bank. As far as I've been told, these stories don't always reflect reality. However, if you're looking for a chance to immerse yourself in another culture, learn a new language, and possibly make a few bucks for travelling or paying off student loans, then teaching ESL might be for you. The first requirement for many jobs is that you are a native English speaker. Some require nothing more. Other requirements depend on the country and the job: Bachelor's Degree, CELTA/TESOL certificate, MA TESOL, and so on.

Another option to actually getting an EFL degree is to do some research on your own. Head to the library or bookstore, there are numerous books, teaching examples, and workbooks that help you plan your classes. Before I left to teach in China, I stopped by my local university and met with the ESL teachers there who work with immigrant students in the U.S. They were more than happy to let me sit in on a few classes, to give me tips and advice. It was invaluable in helping me prepare for my classroom experience.
