In this column, we present six New York State organizations with which NYS TESOL maintains close relations. What are their names? How are the corresponding acronyms pronounced? What is the purpose of each? And how is that purpose related to the work of NYS TESOL? NYS TESOL (nice TEA sol) belongs to three umbrella organizations concerned with language policy in New York State. First, NYSCEA provides an interface between many K-12 teacher organizations and the NYS Department of Education (SED). Second, SCOL provides an opportunity for four related groups to meet regularly. Third, many of these same organizations have recently joined to create a strong lobbying force through the New York Bilingual/ESL Education Reform Coalition.
