Extractions: The Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) is a low speed vehicle for master planned and suburban communities, a quiet, zero-emission alternative to a car. Unlike an automobile, the NEV has no engine, exhaust, or pollution. It's a fun, safe and stylish way for the family to travel to the grocery store, post office, or commuter train, and fulfills all of your every day transportation needs. Research shows that 50 percent of all travel is less than 10 minutes in duration. In most cases, automobiles are over-designed to fulfill our basic need for transportation. With environmental and pollution concerns at the top of everyone's agenda, more and more states are turning to alternate fuel vehicles. Arizona, Florida and California already recognize the importance of electric powered vehicles, and have authorized the use of 25-mph vehicles on roads that are limited to 35 mph. In fact, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently reviewing a rule for the use of Low Speed Vehicles (LSV), on specified roads around the country. Extractions: Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are powered by two energy sourcesan energy conversion unit (such as a combustion engine or fuel cell) and an energy storage device (such as batteries or ultracapacitors). The energy conversion unit may be powered by gasoline, methanol, compressed natural gas, hydrogen, or other alternative fuels. HEVs have the potential to be two to three times more fuel-efficient than conventional vehicles. HEVs can have either a parallel or series design. In a parallel design, the energy conversion unit and electric propulsion system are connected directly to the vehicle's wheels. The primary engine is used for highway driving; the electric motor provides added power during hill climbs, acceleration, and other periods of high demand. In a series design, the primary engine is connected to a generator that produces electricity. The electricity charges the batteries and drives an electric motor that powers the wheels. Are they available in the marketplace today? The Toyota Prius and Honda Insight were introduced in the United States in 1999 and 2000, respectively.
