Ecuador covers 256,370 square kilometers of land and is the smallest country in South America after Uruguay and the Guianas. Ecuador is comprised of four distinct geographical regions: El Oriente (Amazon jungle) in the east, La Sierra (Andes mountains) in the center, La Costa (the Pacific coastal lowlands) in the west, and the majestic Galapagos Islands off the coast. The general weather trends for each region are as follows: With a Spring-like climate all year, the Ecuadorian Andes are a mountain paradise. El Oriente (Amazon region) normally has a warm, humid and rainy climate. The average temperature varies from 23 to 26 C (72 to 80 F). The drier season is generally November to February but varies

Aboard the HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage, Charles Darwin, at age 26, visited the Galapagos archipelago in 1835 and spent a total of five weeks there studying its natural surroundings. It was not until 1859 that his monumental work, "Origin of Species," was published. In 1854, Herman Melville wrote on his impressions about the Galapagos Islands: "Take 5 and 20 heaps of cinders dumped here and there in an outside city lot: imagine them magnified into mountains and the vacant lot the sea and you will have a fit idea of the general aspect of the Encantadas." Known as the Sistine Chapel of South America, the Cathedral La Compania of Quito, Ecuador was built by Jesuits. Construction of this magnificent cathedral began in 1605 and was completed in 1768. The front chancel is gilded with over seven tons of gold. Ecuador is slightly smaller than Nevada. Its coastline equals 2,237 km and the border it shares with two other countries is approximately 2,010 km. It shares its borders with Colombia (590 km), and Peru (1,420 km). Ecuador is home to the Cotopaxi volcano located in the Andes, and is highest active volcano in world. The country has a tropical climate along the coast, and becomes cooler inland. The country's terrain is coastal plain (costa), inter-Andean central highlands (sierra), and flat to rolling eastern jungle (oriente). Elevation extremes range from the lowest point (Pacific Ocean) which is at sea level, to the highest point (Chimborazo) 6,267 m above sea level. As of 1993, had the following natural resources, petroleum, fish, and timber. The land was broken out in the following percentiles, 6% arable land; 5% permanent crops; 18% permanent pastures; 56% forests and woodland; and 15% other.

Packed like a knee-cap between Peru and Colombia, Ecuador contains within its borders an improbablevariety of landscape and culture. For the mountaineer it is bisected by an epic stretch of the northern Andes. For the jungle explorer there is a biological mother lode within the Amazonian Oriente. The sea-minded are rewarded with miles of Pacific coastline to say nothing of the wonders of the Galapagos Islands. The entire country is about the size of Washington state and yet it is home to some extraordinary national parks. In a matter of two hundred miles the traveler can penetrate all of the mainland's defining regions - the coastal lowlands in the West, the volcanic central highlands and the rainforests of the East. Ecuador's climate is generous to the traveler. Embracing the Pacific, Ecuador rests squarely on the equator (hence its name). It's seasons are therefore defined more by rainfall than by temperature. A warm rainy season lasts from January to April, while May through December is characterized by a cooler, drier period that is ideally timed for a summer trip.
