This approach led to the formulation of the flood pulse concept published in 1989. The concept states that the flood pulse is the driving variable of the system and that biotic and abiotic processes in the Aquatic-Terrestrial Transition Zone (ATTZ) are primary regulators of species composition, food webs and nutrient dynamics. During recent years, there has been increasing emphasis on understanding land-water interactions, particularly within the context of the concepts of ecotone, landscape heterogeneity and patch dynamics. Floodplains are sometimes interpreted as ecotones between upland and rivers, and sometimes they are viewed as specific ecosystems. We foresee that our studies of the floodplains in Brazil will make significant contributions to the controversial discussion of the ecotone concept. During the past few years, the working group has gradually shifted its focus to the following questions, which we consider to be of special interest for the study of floodplain systems.
