Extractions: Understanding Lakes In the absence of any living organisms, a lake contains a wide array of molecules and ions from the weathering of soils in the watershed , the atmosphere, and the lake bottom. Therefore, the chemical composition of a lake is fundamentally a function of its climate (which affects its hydrology ) and its basin geology. Each lake has an ion balance of the three major anions and four major cations (see Table 4). Table 4. Extractions: Publication of Proceedings: The proceedings will be published as a special issue of the South African Journal of Science. We aim to obtain sponsorship so that there should be no costs to authors. Guidelines for the preparation of Abstracts Abstracts should have been submitted to the Conference Secretary, Mrs Cheryl Dehning, by 15 December 1998. An abstract, together with the title of the paper (oral or poster) should present an overview of the contents of the presentation. There should be a brief and meaningful summary of the Methods, Results, Discussion and Conclusion of the paper. Abstracts should not be a vague indication of what work is intended to be done. Abstracts should be up to 200 words long and should be preceded by the title (large and in bold), the authors (initials with full stops and surnames with commas and "and" separating them) and their addresses. Addresses should be as succinct as possible, while still accurately indicating what department and institution is host to the author(s) and to allow postal delivery of queries and comment that the paper generates. Extractions: Citizens' Environmental Assessment Ecology M ost of the ecological impacts downstream from Glen Canyon Dam stem from the loss of sediment and nutrients in the river, loss of natural seasonal fluctuations in the flow of water, change in the temperature of the water released downstream of the dam and introduction of non-native species. The Colorado River is home to one of the most interesting assemblages of fish fauna in North America, due to relative isolation and unique river conditions historically found in the river. Some species have been around for more than 20 million years. Adaptations of the fish to extreme and severe river conditions include large streamlined bodies, large fins, and acute sensory abilities. Current river conditions, as a result of dams, have contributed to the endangerment of several native Colorado River fish species. In addition to freshwater fish, birds and other fauna in the lower Colorado River and upper portion of the Sea of Cortez are threatened or endangered, in part, due to the reduced water, sediment and nutrient volume as a result of dams.
