Product Description
Can you cut an octagon into five pieces and rearrange them into a square? How about turning a star into a pentagon? These are just two of the infinite challenges of geometric dissections, the mathematical art of cutting figures into pieces that can be rearranged to form other figures, using as few pieces as possible. Through the ages, geometric dissections have fascinated puzzle fans and great mathematicians alike. Here are dissections known to Plato and exciting new discoveries alike. Greg Frederickson explains solution methods carefully, assuming only a basic knowledge of high school geometry. This beautifully illustrated book provides hours of enjoyment for every mathematical puzzle enthusiast. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Slicing and splicing for enjoyment
Dissections are one area of mathematics where theory usually plays a secondary role to intuition. While the discovery of a solution may take an enormous amount of trial and effort, understanding it is generally a simpleverification. For these reasons, dissections can aptly be described as anarea of popular mathematics. The puzzles of Sam Loyd were extremelypopular, with one even described as having been a national craze in theUnited States, and some of his most diabolical were dissections. HisEnglish counterpart and rival was Henry Dudeney, whose collected works ofpuzzles also contains many dissections.
As befits the development ofabstract geometry centuries ago, the art of dissection goes all the wayback to the age of Plato. Starting with a geometric shape and cutting itinto pieces that can be rearranged to form another shape is something thatclearly is more of a hobby than a career, although it is possible that itmay have some applications in space filling.
Art and hobbies aside, this is a fun book to explore. Since the subject matter is the slicing andsplicing of geometric figures, most of the results are presented asdiagrams, making the solutions easy to understand. One thought constantlyleapt to mind when I was examining some of the diagrams,"How did theythink of doing that?" Obvious only after the fact, many dissections arehardly something that would easily leap to mind.Additional puzzles areinterspersed throughout the text and solutions to all are included at theend of the book.
The public loves puzzles, as the popularity of somegame shows and regular puzzle columns in newspapers and magazinesdemonstrates. In this book, you will find some of the most challenging ofdissection type puzzles, sure to keep you interested from the opening sliceto the final splice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good brain dissection manual
We were instructed to buy our own brain dissection manuals, whichever one was affordable. This just happened to be the one that goes along with the video we are following to dissect. There is more information than a lot of the others, and the diagrams are great.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book available
As a first year neuroscience graduate student I had to hack through Martin's neuroanatomy textbook. Not until a month before my comprehensive exam did I discover this book - my girlfriend found a copy out on the sidewalk, left behind by a departing medical student probably - filled with hasty underlines and unintelligible scribbles in bic pen. But, it was a godsend. The quality of this text is immediately apparent to anyone who has tried to learn from it.If you begin from ignorance, use this book!If you already know everything go ahead and show off to yourself that you can understand Martin or for that matter a straight atlas of brain sections with no text at all!But for those who need concepts, themes, integrative explanations, this books is by far the best thing available.

The basic idea of this book is to provide a rudimentary brain atlas of real photographs with annotations, and then to go through each functional system separately and with schematic figures. The book is bound in waterproof material and even the pages are tough enough to withstand being dragged around, dripped on with coffee or with formaldehyde, etc.

I am not kidding, people, this book is supreme for its kind.We should thank Lennart Heimer for turning neuroanatomy from an arcane, incoherent list of latin names, into a simple, coherent, and fascinating course of study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource if you can find it
Though a review is almost unecessary for the droves of med students trying to get a copy as a required text, Heimer is a great way to get into neuroanatomy, even for the budding biologist. The first half of the bookdescribes dissections of a human brain in exquisite detail (multiple cutssuggested), though you'll probably have trouble finding a human brain(legally) to dissect unless you are one of the aforementioned med students. The latter half goes through the different brain systems/structures,paying attention to function tracts and anatomical correlates of behavior. Labeled MRI's are included in the new edition.Great for visualizing a 3Dmap of the brain, almost bettter than the real thing.

If you aren'tlooking for a lab manual, I would go for Afifi & Bergman's _FuntionalNeuroanatomy_, which goes into greater detail concerning functional tracts, clinical examples, and more diagrams/MRI slices. ... Read more

Product Description
This superbly illustrated atlas provides laryngologists with the base skills required to undertake all kinds of laryngeal phonosurgery procedures, prior to testing out one's skill set in the operating room or office on real patients. It guides the reader through the anatomy and physiology of the larynx (as they relate to the procedures) and various office and O.R.-based phonosurgical procedures, using easy-to-follow instructions and labeled photos. As such, otolaryngologists and otolaryngologists-in-training can confidently rely on this new resource to aid in honing their skills in a comfortable and risk-free environment.Currently, there is no similar book available. Although several phonosurgery books have been published, they focus on the in vivo scenario as opposed to the dissection lab, or in vitro scenario. In producing this atlas, the authors stated aim is to formalize the training of common and complex phonosurgical procedures, so as to ultimately improve healthcare delivery to patients suffering from voice disorders. ... The medical students courageous willingness to acknowledge their feelings about death and dissection has made this book possible. It is our hope that this slim volume this collection of words and images created by the medical students at University of Massachusetts during the last thirty years (and augmented by Meryl Levin s documentary photographs of students from Weill Medical College of Cornell University and their journal entries written in 1998 and published in Anatomy of Anatomy) will provide you with what good doctors provide for their patients: catharsis, personal insights, and support. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price
This lab manual is lacking in several areas. The illustrations commonly misrepresent the size or appearance of anatomical features, making it hard for the students to know what they are looking at.It also fails to provide illustrations that clearly label several of the features it asks students to find. Probably the most irritating part about the book, however, is the author's insistence on using the most obscure names for features instead of the names commonly used by other anatomists in the field. Descriptions of embryology are also limited, and functions are rarely discussed.
Overall, the book is decent enough if students need a basic overview of the anatomical structures of the dogfish, necturus, and cat. However, there are much better anatomy lab manuals available, and they are probably less expensive!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK For Basics...

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint of Heart
Bohensky leaves no quarter for the squeamish as his inquiring scalpel illuminates the underpinnings of those lovable menaces that we call cats. Each step of our exploration is tied to observations about the traits and habits that characterized the creature before its unfortunate arrival at our operating table. For instance, penetrating insights into feline psychology are offered as we "split the hemispheres" of the subject's skull, and inventive theories about the breed's fecundity are offered as we explore its nether regions.I would highly recommend this work to anyone wishing to gain or impart a better understanding of biology. However, I would not advise anyone to repeat our attempt to parlay the untimely death of a beloved pet into an anatomy lesson for under-fives. ...
