Product Description

"Magnificent in its breadth and illustration." -- Booklist

"A well-illustrated large-format book... A good book for a young person who is curious about dinosaurs." -- Choice

No other life-form captures the imagination and attention like dinosaurs. Organized by the major dinosaur families, Dinosaurus identifies 500 species creature by creature, from the voracious flesh-eaters to the egg-stealers to the vegetarians, detailing what they looked like, what they ate and how they fought, lived and died.

All this information is dramatically presented and exciting to read, with features such as:

  • At-a-glance fact files
  • Concise explanations of known traits and habits of each dinosaur species
  • Vivid full-color illustrations
  • Latin name, translation and pronunciation
  • Adult length and weight
  • Height specifics and comparison to humans
  • Diet and habitat
  • Global distribution.

Dinosaurus also challenges and discredits some long-popular myths and legends. For example, this guide shows that:

  • The dinosaur known as brontosaurus never existed
  • Tyrannosaurus was not the biggest meat-eater of all time
  • Flying dinosaurs were not simply feeble gliders
  • Sea dinosaurs could not out-swim today's fastest fish.

Brimming with the research from digs in North America, Mongolia, Europe, China and elsewhere, Dinosaurus is comprehensive, innovative and as compelling and exciting as the dinosaurs themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars An revealing eye opening imaginative larger-than-life vividly realistic and throughly intelligent researched field guide legacy
"Steve parker hasalways had a renowned passionate lifelong clever interest in prehistoric dinosaurs after having hundred books under his hat he is now the author of DINOSAURUS the COMPLETE GUIDE TO DINOSAURS which reveals in scientific detail of research the fast rapid step-by-step changing developments of our world called:EVOLUTION in life.It also has in it like i"ve previously written in past book reviews vividly realistic photographs of dinosaurs. All in all something that no small library cannot hope to be without because to simply put it capture's our eye opening imagination in our dreams of living amongst them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Pictures - Megalosaurus Looks Like Darth Maul
See all my dinosaur book reviews.

I have been into dinosaurs for 30 of my 35 years, ever since my first trip to the museum gazing upon the fossils of these wonderful creatures. I have an extensive collection of dinosaur books both old and new. "Dinosaurus" is aimed at the new student but is flawed.

The beautifully presented "Dinosaurus" is certainly one of the thickest dinosaur books; almost 450 pages of information contained in 15 chapters. The chapters sort dinosaurs into their broader categories like 'The Giants' and 'Armored Dinosaurs', as opposed to era and period order. The 20 page introduction explains such things as fossilisation, evolution, myths, and time scale. The next two chapters provide information on early life and movement onto land. Chapters 3 to 13 specialise on dinosaurs while the last two go into flying reptiles, sea reptiles and animals of the Tertiary and Quaternary Periods.

Each page features a single dinosaur. Half of the page is a written explanation or description. This mainly presents information on fossil location, discoverer, and some on features of the dinosaur. There is also a fact-file chart. The other half of the page is a picture, either painted or drawn with colour. The book caters for the new student by providing basic information.

I like the way the book is set out. But there are problems:

1) The information is not new or cutting-edge, and where there is individual thought it is only speculation.

The information on each dinosaur is not new. I'm not a palaeontologist, but I have 30 years of interest and knowledge under my belt. I could open an older book of mine and read the same thing for most of the dinosaurs. So, if you are looking for something fresh or new, this is not it.

In dinosaur books, there needs to be a balance between suggested fact and speculation. While some books like "National Geographic Dinosaur" lean too far to suggested fact, "Dinosaurus" speculates too much. For example, I quote: "The long spines of Polacanthus MAY have been along the neck and flanks, with the more curved 'shark's fin' projections along the upper tail. It was a low-slung, heavy dinosaur, PROBABLY with a beak-like mouth for cropping plant food". Polacanthus is an old fossil - it is in books from the 70's. It has been known for years where it's spines are and what it's mouth looks like - the fossil hasn't changed! So there is too much suggestion and not enough fact in "Dinosaurus".

However, this book does showcase recent discoveries (last 20 years), but aside from where they are found and what they look like we are not really told anything else. It really is for the new student.

"Dinosaurus" gives enough information on each dinosaur species for the new student, but it is not comprehensive. My main objection is that it doesn't provide any decent information on genealogies - how the dinosaurs relate to each other. Other dinosaur books, for example "National Geographic Dinosaurs" and "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopaedia", provide much better detail on the families with illustrated family trees matched against time along with evolution patterns. "Dinosaurus" mentions the main group name, for example, Theropoda for Giganotosaurus but not that it is actually an allosaur. All comparisons are with T-Rex not with other allosaurs - its family.

2) Pictures.

The pictures in "Dinosaurus" are the single most disappointing aspect of this book.

Each picture is either very poorly drawn/painted or is terribly inaccurate. For example, I'll just concentrate on the large carnosaurs: Allosaurus is nothing like the modern convention - I'm picturing the allosaurs in 'Walking With Dinosaurs' here: head forward slightly below the neck vertebrae with tail out verses an upright Allosaurus in the book. Also, the book's Carnotaurus doesn't have a bull-like snout but has elbows! Spinosaurus, Albertosaurus and Ceratosaurus are shockingly bad. Megalosaurus looks like Darth Maul.

The other thing is, I am a dinosaur romantic. By this I mean I grew up on dinosaur books that painted pictures of the world they lived in and how they interacted with each other and their surroundings. In other words I prefer the books that have many pictures of sprawling landscapes, pictures of herbivorous dinosaurs in their habitats with the local communities, and pictures of the hunter verses hunted in order to gauge size and scope.

The pictures of each dinosaur in "Dinosaurus" are stand alone - no background, no context, and no sense of size. There is a scale comparing the dinosaur to a 6 foot man, but this is in terms of 'size' not height or length - meaningless information. And information that requires us to turn pages to compare dinosaurs, instead of scaled diagrams of dinosaurs next to each other.

There are hardly any pictures of dinosaurs in an environmental setting and these are taken from other sources anyway. The best ones in this book are also found in "The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopaedia". If you want gorgeous pictures, then look no further than Raul Martin - the illustrator of "National Geographic Dinosaurs".

Overall, I'm disappointed with "Dinosaurus". It doesn't add anything to my collection. It would probably suit a new student - but it is a lot of money and there are cheaper, better books. I would recommend "National Geographic Dinosaur" first followed by "The Kingfisher Dinosaur Encyclopedia" by Burnie.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Dinosaur Books
This is one of the better dinosaur books out there. The illustrations range from good to excellent; some are so realistic that they appear to be photographs (see the Baryonyx on p. 190). However, as pointed out by other reviewers, some of the illustrations appear to be considerably off the mark (the orange Spinosaurus on p. 199 appears to be the size of a Velociraptor, not a 45 foot long animal!). The text is written for an adult with some knowledge of the field; it's very well written, makes interesting points, but it's not done in a stiff or awkward style. The scope of dinosaurs covered is not complete, but it contains info on more dinosaurs than 90% of the books on this subject, & the info is quite detailed, & there's an index for easy searching. Overall, a good addition to any serious dinosaur library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations - Excellent
Thanks for your product - it's too much good!
It's satisfy my better expectatives...

Have a good day...

3-0 out of 5 stars Something isn't right here...
Something isn't right here. Where are the feathers? The scaly velociraptor mongoliensis and therizinosaurus(pardon me for spelling [if it's not right]) look less likely than a tyrannosaurus with wings. And on a page about Stegos, i read that "Stegosaurs, like MOST DINOSAURS [My caps] are COLDBLOODED. That is not right! And i thought that ever since the time Gregory S. Paul's every Theropod being feathery theory, dinosaurs were becoming faster, smarter, and featherier in the public eye! Well, gees, did this book ever prove me wrong! And by the way, except for a couple of feathery fellows, how come they're all brown or maybe a little dull red? Frankly, although there is good info here, go for The Field Guide to Dinosaurs by Henry Gee for the dino's life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Bones by Bob Barner

This children's book, "Dinosaur Bones" by Bob Barner,is great for children ages 18 mos. to 3 years. I sent this along with other books to my grandson for his 2nd birthday, and he LOVED it! The pictures are large and the "story" not too long so as to get boring. Alex loves to make dino noises along with each page! This Grandma is very pleased with this pick, as she knows you and your little one will be, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Bones
This is a wonderful book for 2 to 4 year olds. My 2 year old daughter is in love with all things "dinosaur" right now. After viewing the video several times, she was ecstatic when she saw the book. The illustrations arelarge and invivid colors. The writing and lettering are clear and easy for the young emerging reader. Parents and young aspiring archaeologists will enjoy reading about the history of dinosaurs, in the light-hearted, humorous, and rhythmic Bob Barner style. Hopefully, Scholastic Booksreleases the dvd soon along with Dem Bones, which are only viewable on cable "on demand." I also recommend Bob Barner's Dem Bones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic But Expensive
This is a fantastic book, but it is a bit costly.I used it for a lesson for my three year olds in their preschool room, and they were enthralled. What I like most is that it can serve two purposes. The brief and humorous poem is perfect for three year olds. The rest of the information written on the bottom of the page is appropriate for older children. So this book is written for children of all ages (even me!).The illustrations are the bomb!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for lots of ages!
I have two sons who are 2 and 7-1/2 -- it's hard to find a book both of them like at the same time. They both love Dinosaur Bones! The younger one loves the pictures and simple rhymes, and the older one loves reading them to him.But there is also the smaller print on each page containing more advanced information, which is fun to read to my older son when we are one-on-one.We've checked this book out of the library a half-dozen times, and keep renewing it until they won't let us anymore. So I'm finally going to buy it!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The New Dinosaur review
An excellent read, I would consider buying this if you liked "The World of Kong: A natural history of skull island". A great view on the life of dinosaur had they not become extinct.

5-0 out of 5 stars What If the Dinosaurs Never Went Extinct?
I absolutely love this book. I have a well-read, well-loved copy that I've owned since my parents bought it for me back when I was seven or eight years old, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. In this book, Dougal Dixon (known for his alternate evolution scenarios like 'After Man: A Zoology of the Future' and 'The Future is Wild') posits a world where the dinosaurs never died out. He opens up with a nice introduction to dinosaurs and mass extinctions, and then goes on to give charts detailing his alternate evolution, information on continental drift, different biomes and regions of the earth, and how lifeforms adapt to everything from tropical rainforests to open deserts and grasslands to the seas. Then we get into the REAL meat of the book.

Arranged by region, we get to see richly illustrated creatures that might have evolved, had the dinosaurs not vanished 65 million years ago. We are introduced to ground dwelling pterosaurs on the African savannah, sleek theropods that stalk the great herds of hadrosaurs on the North American plain, armored ankylosaurs on the Asian steppe, giant ammonites and the pleisosaurs that adapted to eat them, and armless, scavenging descendants of the tyrannosaur in Patagonia. These, and the countless other fascinating, yet believable, creatures all show parallels to contemporary animals like pandas, flamingos, whales, jerboas, pelicans, woodpeckers, and so forth. And, not all dinosaurs survived Dixon's either. He mentions the last stegosaurs as dying out on the Indian subcontinent 2 million years ago, for instance.

Creationists and other such types will probably find the whole concept a bit objectionable, but those of us who accept evolution can look at this book as a fascinating read, an alternate look at the potential creatures that may have evolved were the dinosaurs with us today. Its really sci-fi in the strictest sense of the word, and a fun read to boot, so I definately recommend getting your hands on a copy when (if) you can find it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Science Book
Dougal Dixon's first book, After Man, was an excellent look at what animals might be like if humans became extinct. This book explores what dinosaurs might have been like if they hadn't gone extinct. It's a very interesting idea, and this book does a good job of it. Many of the dinosaurs are imaginatively designed, but are still remeniscent of real dinosaurs. However, the book is flawed in the fact that some of the dinosaurs are very improbable, for example, many have fur. These creatures are not as imaginative as those in After Man, which is one of my favorite science books. A website called The Speculative Dinosaur Project does a similar thing, except that the creatures are more plausible and more developed, and it is more thourough,
Still, this is an excellent book with a well thought out concept, and in spite of what I have said, many of the creatures are very interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a little familiar...
well, it's a good book, i'll admit, but the creatures just seem all too familiar.the Treepounce looks remarkebly like a leopard, and the Gwanna, well, that's a kangaroo.the Lank?a Giraffe, of course!creatures like the Glub?well, that's simple.obviously a manatee.the trunk on the Lumber's nose made it an obvious elephant.almost all of the creatures had one thing in common:they seemed to be saurian replacements of real earth animals.i admot, it makes a little sence, seeing as these real animals living with us have evilved to look the way they do for a reason, but for every dinosaur to have a real-world brother?but that's not my big complaint.the only thing that i saw wrong with this book would be the shortage of dinosaurs outside the coelurosaur/hypsilophidont/arbrosaur lineage.there was only one ceratopsian, wich seems illogical, seeing how successful they were during the Cretaceous.perhaps the one creature that i was 100% dissapointed with was the Coconut Grab, an Ammonite/Squid ancestor that can emerge from the sea and climb trees like a robber crab.preposterous!looking at their similarities i conclude, if the cephalopods don't need to reach land in the real world, they wouldn't need to in Dixon's world, either.

anyways, if you are into seeing what life minus the KT extinction would be like, you should check this out.if you aren't really phased by the topic, don't bother.

What will keep you coming back to this title again and again is the tremendous and beautifully-modeled drawings full of the most whimsical detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Bob Rocks!
This is one of the best kid's picture books ever - my children loved all of Joyce's books - but Bob, Santa Calls and Meet the Robinsons are their favorites - even now at ages 18 and 22, they both agree that Bob Rocks! We have now bought William Joyce's books for the next generation of kids in our family.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Bob
The book Dinosaur Bob is a great book for many reasons. It is a great book because it is funny. I think it is funny because it is about a family on vacation and they stumble upon a dinosaur and the parents actually say the family can keep the dinosaur as a pet. They name the dinosaur Bob. When the family gets back home everything is going well until Bob becomes too wild and the police are going to send them back to the Safari where he came from. Then their dad has an idea to get him back and everyone is happy again. Dinosaur Bob is great book to read because you might like dinosaurs and wish you had one of your own. I would recommend this book to any age because I am a fifth grader and I love this book and you will too.

Bones. Bones. We look for bones.
We look for the bones of dinosaurs.

Six small paleontologists search for bones. When they find them, they dig them up, wrap them, and load them on a truck, bound for the museum.

There, they carefully put together the bones of a giant dinosaur.

In bright, bold, exuberant pictures, with a text that is just right for reading or chanting aloud, Byron Barton looks at just what happens to the bones left behind by dinosaurs of long, long ago. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My three year old is wearing out his copy
This is one of a handful of books that we read over and over and over. My son LOVES this book. It is so simple and accessible for small children but explains exactly what a paleontologist does with only the words it needs. The simple, bold and bright illustrations are practically mesmerizing as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars For young dinosaur enthusiasts...
My five year old daughter specifically asked for this book as a Christmas gift after checking it out at the library during the summer; it made a huge impression! The simple text and vibrant illustrations are perfect for young children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information, splendid inspiration
This was my two-year-old's favorite book; for some time he and it were inseparable.Bold, simple illustrations on bright backgrounds make a terrific fist visual introduction to the process dinosaur bones undergo for extraction, study, and display. Thanks to this book, mine was the only toddler in his peer group who could identify a paleontologist and explain what one des.Inspired by the story, to this day one of his favorite games is to "dig" for imaginary dinosaur bones in the sand, "wrap" them, pack them in "crates," load them on the "truck" (his stroller), and transport them to the "museum" (our living room), where they are unloaded, assembled into "skeletons," and carefully studied for the remainder of the day.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compelling visuals for dino-loving kids
Byron Barton's "Bones, Bones..." has the simple, inevitable story line that my son loves, plus the building up of the dinosaur image from the bones found in an archeological expedition. For any dinosaur kid who is at the developmental stage of building up from the pieces - seeing the bones uncovered, packed, transported and unpacked before assembly into a dino skeleton (T Rex, of course) is a daily delight.

It is a simple story, though, so choose for younger readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dinosaur book with flaps to lift up
My 4 year old loves this book.It is factual with accurate depictions of dinosaurs but has a lot of humor put in to make it interesting for a toddler. He loves the page where a big dinosaur is squashing a small one (I'm sure it happened sometimes). Each page has a lot of flaps to lift to make it more interesting. It also explains the current theory of what happened to the dinosaurs and ends with modern palentologists digging for the bones. While toddlers love it, older children (up to 12 or so) would enjoy it, too. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I've Taken This Book All Over The World With Me
I got this wee book at the Field Museum in Chicago in 2006 and still have more than half its stickers left. Ever since then I've taken it with me when I've traveled and have enjoyed leaving dinosaurs behind in worthy places. I put a green T-Rex in one of the Eiffel Tower's elevators. I left a brown stegosaur on Nelson's monument in Trafalgar Square, and another plant eater went under a rung on the ladder used by the Wizard of New Zealand, down in Christchurch. I put one in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater, and another on a street sign in Virginia, right by Robert E. Lee's monumental tomb. Another donned a stall in the restroom inside the Guinness Brewery in Dublin. Nearer to home, I put an Apatosaurus sticker firmly on the rear bumper of a Volvo belonging to the Reform mohel who'd just given my friend's week-old son a very stressful morning. (And who passed out business cards afterward, jeez how gauche.) And then there's the time I stood up on the exam table wearing a paper towel dress and sneaked one onto the ceiling of my gynecologist's office: something to gaze up at, right? The point is, I bet no other little sticker book sold at the Field Museum has ever gotten around in quite this way. I figure the stickers are neat to look at and as far as criminality goes, well, it's vandalism-lite, huh? ... Read more

From the very first “GRRRRRR!” and “ROAR!” of the Super Hungry Dinosaur, kids will be rooting for Hal to save his parents and his dog, Billy, from the huge beast. 3-0 out of 5 stars A great dinosaur book, just maybe not the best for group sharing.
Dinosaurs are almost always a great choice for story time read alouds and originally I thought this one was perfect. The illustrations are very engaging and the super hungry dinosaur himself is just scary enough and just cute enough to strike that perfect balance.Hal is a great hero of the story, standing up to the great big dinosaur and telling him it's just not fair to eat a very small boy.

What makes this not so great as a read aloud is that in a few places there are just too many illustrations per page and the text is sometimes hard to follow from page to page.If it's read a couple of times, then it's great - but when you only have one chance, it can be kind of confusing.Parts of the story rely almost soley on the crowded illustrations to carry the narrative and it will take a bit of practice to carry that off in a group. Also, as a group read aloud, some of this text seems a bit too jarring; like when the dinosaur says "then I'll eat your mom" or "then I'll eat your dad instead".Now this all turns out fine because Hal and Billy triumph in the end and I think if you read it one on one with a child it will provide lots of fun scary thrills. It just felt like a bit too much for a group.

I really like this book, just not so much for group sharing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book!
My two year old loves this book, and my husband loves reading it to him.The pictures are great, and there is happening on each page to keep him engrossed in the book as we read the simple lines. My one complaint might be that the flow of text is sometimes difficult to follow as it crosses pages, but after reading it aloud 1-2 times, you get into the swing of where to read next.Great, fun book.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to fill a hungry dino
What happens when a ravenous dinosaur stumbles into the backyard of a little boy and his spirited dog? Hal finds out in //The Super Hungry Dinosaur//, created by Martin Waddell. Hal confronts the menace when he threatens to eat him and his parents. Just a lad, Hal faces the dinosaur and politely reasons with him, "I am small and eating small children is not really fair." Hal remains rational until the dinosaur goes too far by threatening his dog. The rambunctious battle ensues. A palette of color and brilliant illustration, by Leonie Lord, brushes the pages. Ultimately, the dinosaur meets his match in Hal and is, instead, served up a piping plate of spaghetti with meatballs; the dog survives this scuffle. He eats and eats until he is satisfied and the family sees him off, inviting him back again. The real story lies in the artwork. Modern, descriptive, detailed lines and color are expressed clearly and pleasingly. Young ones will love the characterization and the repetition in this tale. Get ready for a repeat reading, "just one more time, please!"

5-0 out of 5 stars This super silly madcap battle between Hal and the "Super Hungry Dinosaur" will delight the dino fan!"Grrrrrrr!"
Hal was chasing his dog Billy around the backyard. The birds were interested in the bird feeder, a butterfly was fluttering around the yard and a yellow cat was asleep on top of the fence. There was one critter who suddenly burst through the fence all ready to eat up Hal and Billy."Grrrrrrr!" It was a "Super Hungry Dinosaur" and he was looking for a tasty snack."I'm hungry and I've come to eat you!" Of course Hal convinced him that he was not being reasonable (in a polite way of course).Well, if he couldn't eat a little boy, he could eat his mom or dad.Oh, no, Hal loved them and that just wouldn't do!

Hal got really mad when that dino said he was going to eat his dog."OH NO YOU WON'T!"He meant business now.The chase was on and things started to fly.Billy was running like crazy and Hal was not far behind on his scooter.Plant pots went flying, the clothesline went down, and they all hopped over a little trampoline."Grrrrrrr!"Hal and Billy wrangled, twisted and turned and lassoed the Super Hungry Dinosaur.Hal, who was astride his back yelled, "Do you give in?"Through rain and sunshine he grumbled and refused.Would that Super Hungry Dinosaur let himself be defeated by a little boy?

This super silly madcap battle between Hal and the "Super Hungry Dinosaur" will delight the dino fan.I loved the way this imaginative story unfolded. It was almost as if the author became a little boy again tussling with this Super Hungry Dinosaur. The drawings were simple, but very captivating. If your youngster is imaginative, loves dinos and is into active, zany stories this is one you just might want to consider!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Toddler Shabbos Book!
Our two and a half year old daughter loves this book so much that I had to find a gaint dinosaur to invite to Shabbos dinner.I found a four foot inflatable one that we dressed up in my husband's green shirt and a tie (because that's what the dinosaur wears in the story). Now, every Friday before we light candles, we read the story and then we hear someone knocking. We go open the front door to find dino there! He sleeps in my daughter's room and disappears after she goes to sleep Saturday night (after Shabbos is over). He returns again the following Shabbos, after spending the week with his family (the mommy and daddy dinosaurs).I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute book for the preschooler
My 3-1/2 year old loves this book and we read it all the time (over and over and over again!). It has familiarized him with the customs of Shabbat on another level. The rhyming is fun and the pictures are cute. It is best suited for kids up to about 6 or 7 years old.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur on Shabbat
The friendly, oversized dinosaur from Dinosaur on Hanukkah and Dinosaur on Passover, returns to celebrate Shabbat with a young boy and his contemporary family. In silly, rhyming text, Dino tries to help with Shabbat preparations: setting the table, lighting the candles, pouring the wine, and blessing the challah. He also joins the family in the synagogue on Shabbat morning and participates in Havdalah. As in the past, his size, enthusiasm, and clumsiness create havoc, but "when Shabbat is over Dino leaves without a fuss. But I know next Friday he'll be back to share Shabbat with us."The illustrations complement the fun and cheery mood of the text, but are a bit inconsistent. For example, the text refers to a white tablecloth while the illustration appears in blue, and Dino sometimes wears a baseball cap but at other times (like in synagogue) his head is bare.A brief end note explains Shabbat, however, there would be added value if it included the lyrics and music to "The Dinosaur Song" (There's a dinosaur knocking at my door, knocking one, two, three . . . there's a dinosaur knocking at my door and he wants to spend Shabbat with me . . .) - a natural pairing for a pre-school storytime program. For ages 3 - 5.Reviewed by Rachel Kamin ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magic Treehouse
I have a first grader who is at kind of an awkward stage since he's outgrown most of the "easy" books but he doesn't quite have the comprehension yet for many of the harder books. He LOVES these Magic Treehouse books. We generally read them together right now. His teacher warned me that the Magic Treehouse books are really 3rd-4th grade level. When he reads them alone, he can figure out most of the words, but I think he's working so hard to read that he doesn't really understand what he's reading. When we read together though, he follows along with me and the story keeps his interest. Sometimes we take turns with him reading Jack's parts and me reading Annie's or he'll read a page and then I read a page. I don't think it will be too much longer before he's able to read and understand the books on his own. The best thing is that it had gotten to a point where reading together was kind of a chore. He was bored and distracted and I had to fight with him to get him to read. With the Magic Treehouse books, he begs me to read with him! I like this set because dinosaurs, mummies, knights, and pirates are some of his favorite subjects. He's already seen some of the later books at the book fair and the library and he's constantly asking for them so hopefully he'll stay interested in the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magic Tree House
The books arrived quickly and in wonderful condition. My granddaughter was thrilled. She is seven and very particular about the condition of her books(No dog eared pages or broken spines).Couldn't have been more pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars kids book review
This series is wonderful for kids!I started my first child at age 1, reading these books. We go over and over them, but there are still more which we have not even got to yet.Great starter for series books with good use of imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars a way into reading for my daughter!
My nine year old daughter is dyslexic, and although she loves when I read to her, she has not enjoyed reading on her own...until we found these books! They are easy enough for her to build confidence, but enjoyable with enough facts for her not too feel they are "too young" for her.We are already going to the school library to find more while we wait for our next shipment to arrive. (we live overseas so cannot find them at the local store) I am thrilled to find books that she ENJOYS reading that I think fun and educational also!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a series I recommend ... not interesting
The best thing about the Magic Tree House books is that they are informative.

At one time, we went all-in on MTH and had about 30 of them. And my oldest read them -- don't get me wrong. But the books aren't funny or engaging or even classic stories. And the narration is just blah.Lots of telling, not much story. These books have been marketed like crazy, and they ARE informative, but they're not fun to read.

There is nothing engaging about the characters, and nothing ever really happens in the series.Sometimes Annie and Jack don't take more than 25 steps from the tree house (Pirates comes to mind). They are just words on a page.

For early reader series (especially for boys), my kids prefer Roscoe Riley Rules and Geronimo Stilton -- both are very quick to reel your reader in.Kids gobble them up for their clever humor and great characters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Well written, visually appealing. Facts are given that correlate the world we see with the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise; a blessing for parents looking to teach the truth
With so many secular sources out there, it is sometimes difficult for parents who wish to teach their children about Creation and our true beginnings to find answers amongst the smog. "Answers for Kids" is a great series with answers which are not only biblical, but logical. These books give both parents and kids a place to start in their search for the truth.

1-0 out of 5 stars Myths portrayed as "science"
I guess there is an audience for this among Xians who don't want their children exposed to any facts about the real world. Why you would think that the evidence of the universe god created is less important than a book written by people thousands of years ago is beyond me but for those folks this book of myths will fill the bill.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nonsense
The author(s) & publisher of this book should be ashamed of themselves. It is filled with fanciful nonsense portrayed as fact. Does anyone really believe that it is healthy for the scholastic development of a child to contradict the fundamental lessons they learn in science class with this silly garbage? Lying to children is immoral, and this book is nothing but lies.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
Be forewarned - it's a small book. Also, it's geared toward kids older than, say 8. ... Read more
