Product Description
Sick of South Beach? Anti Atkins? Desperate for toast with your eggs? Then the Bread for Life Diet is your dream diet. The first new diet to buck the high-protein, low-carbcraze, this revolutionary program not only allows you to indulge in the bread you've been denying yourself but actually requires you to: up to 16 slices a day!

Israeli nutritionist Olga Raz developed the diet as a result of her research on serotonin, a chemical that controls the hunger and satiety centers of the brain. While high-protein meals cause serotonin to drop, a bread-based meal raises the serotonin level. Raz also discovered that her diet can correct the chemical imbalances in the body that make it difficult for many people to lose weight. Divided into two meal plans-the first lasts up to two weeks and is designed to promote fast weight loss-the diet is so healthy that it helps reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and alleviate diabetic symptoms.

Thousands of people have already experienced amazing results with the Bread for Life Diet in Israel, where Raz has become a household name and her book a huge best-seller. Now Americans, too, can benefit from this extraordinary new approach to weight loss.

The diet is healthy, nutritionally sound, and proven to work

Includes a wide range of foods: pasta, grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat

Simple to follow: no counting calories, carbohydrates, or fat grams

Features easy-to-prepare foods, plus 25 tasty recipes. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars the bread for life diet
I thought this was just the same old diet info. with the addition of 'lightbread'
Think that just eating healthily and doing exercise would have the same effect!!
I'm glad I bought this at a bargain price. In fact I'm sorry I bought it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Unhealthy diet
If you burn more calories than you ingest, you will lose weight.
So the Bread for Life Diet CAN help people to lose weight.
However, it'll remain a most unhealthy diet for A LOT of people. For diabetic and prediabetic, it comes to self-poisoning. It's far too high carb.

Be careful. Educate yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!Something Realistic and Healthy I Can Stick With
I have done so many diets, it's not even funny....and yet I still need to lose about 40 pounds. The problem? Most diets are just too hard to stick with. They require you to eat hardly anything (calorie counting,) require the use of powders and potions (Medifast) or else are so restrictive and impractical that they just don't work in the real world (Atkins.)I had an especially hard time with low carb diets; I did lose weight, but I was so depressed and sickly I just couldn't take it, and eating lots of meats, fats, and proteins with no bread or grain for months at a time was boring and caused me to permanently lose my taste for meat.

Enter Bread For Life.I came across the book randomly, read it in one day, and thought "why not try it?"After one day, I was hooked. You really don't get hungry since you eat so often, and the high fiber content of the bread keeps you full and kills your appetite.I am a HUGE sugar junkie, but after a few days on this plan I kind of lost my taste for sweet stuff and don't really feel deprived.I tend to suffer from digestive problems and acid reflux, and this, too, seems to be on the mend since I began this. It's easy to eat out on Bread For Life, since you aren't limited to anything weird and can eat unlimited veggies, salads, and even some fruit. Finally, it's pretty cheap to follow and doesn't require much in the way of cooking, a plus if you're on a limited budget and are cooking for one, like I am.

I think one of the best parts about the book is that it does allow for real life.If you do eat something off the program, she advises you to tell yourself it's ok, and to just get back on track for the next meal.No guilt, no beating yourself up for "cheating."

Overall, this is a good solid program that I think will be easy to stick with for the long haul.I have already lost weight my first week, and I don't find eating the bread boring since I vary the spreads I use at each meal and am sure to eat a lot of different veggies to keep things "new."Obviously, you have to like bread for this thing to be practical, so if you don't you won't have much luck, although she does offers substitutions. I highly recommend this book to anybody who, like me, is tired of all the fads (low carb! low fat! count calories!) and wants something simple and easy to work with. I will post an update in a few months once I see how I do on this over the long-term.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Stay On and Very Effective
The author makes a point. You need to READ this book and follow the rules and this diet will WORK. I was concerned about eating all that bread but you need to have the "light or lower calorie" wheat bread.Keep your meals "SMALL", every 3 to 4 hours, and along with some daily exercise, this will work. This program (NoT just a diet) you can use for the rest of your life. Try it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Works!! 10 lbs.gonein 3 1/2 weeks!
I tried Olga Raz's diet in desperation. Since being diagnosed with Hashimoto's hypothyroidism I have been unable to lose weight. I've jumped from diet to diet (low carb, low calorie, The Blood Type diet, The Hibernation diet, etc.) and couldn't lose more than a couple pounds.

It is hard to believe that I am eating every few hours, not exercising and yet losing weight more quickly that I ever have before. It is also very easy to eat out... choose a nice steak or chicken breast and a side of vegetables or a large salad and bread. I even had a few light beers this week to celebrate a friend's birthday!

I think this diet would be easy to follow for a lifetime. You may get sick of all the bread in phase 1 but phase 2 allows substitutions which include pasta, rice, potatos and more!

I bought my book used here on Amazon. I suggest buying the book or borrowing it from your local library as a lot of info about the diet is inaccurate on the internet. ... Read more

I am in a group that uses this diet method. It is a good, easy to understand diet that emphasizes not eating high glycemic foods that make you hungry in just a few hours.A balanced low-glycemic diet is recommended. All foods are all listed in a RED/YELLOW/GREEN list.It does not list calories, just portions. All dieting is painful, especially at first. Our group of 8 meets once a week (starting Sep 09) and has lost 7.6% of our original weight or 176 pounds toward our initial goal of 10% wt loss.It works and is not a fad diet like most. You must also exercise along with this diet--i.e. walk as much as you can as often as you can.A good book.CB ... Product Description
The antidote to fad diets: here is the original bestseller that revolutionized the way we think about food. By now, most people who have tried some of the recent fad diets have realized that those diets don't work; weight lost in the initial stages is eventually gained back, leaving the dieter at the same weight as before, or even heavier. What does work, however, is the program outlined in The T-Factor Diet, the groundbreaking book that has sold well over a million copies since initial publication. Its runaway success launched the best-selling T-Factor Fat Gram Counter and its companion guides, changing a nation's attitude toward high-fat foods. This book's scientifically proven advice remains true today: by understanding the "T-factor" or thermogenic effect, in which carbohydrate calories are burned faster than fat calories, you can lose weight quickly and safely, and keep it off--all without going hungry. Dr. Martin Katahn explains how to choose foods that naturally maximize the T-factor level, thus activating the body's hidden fat-burning potential; he also includes exercises, recipes, and meal plans. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Weight Loss Program Ever
If you like to "Food Journal" this is the best book ever on learning how the body uses food for fuel.If you read the book and truly understand the concept then losing weight is simply following the theory of "Eat Fat, Get Fat".When you calculate how many of your daily calories actully come from the fat in the food you eat, you will be shocked and then will wonder why American aren't even more over-weight.It taught me a way of eating that I can live with the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars SLIM FOR LIFE!
I bought this book in 1993 when i was 32 years old. It became my bible for losing this excess weight once and for all for life. it made sense. fat makes humans fat. period. science is science, after all humans are all basically comprised of the same matter aren't they?. unless you have green blood or something?. previous attempts at eliminating "all bad foods" forever and dreams of being a gym rat forever and ever of course are prepostrous. this theory made sense, and it has given me the understanding of how nutrition (fuel to sustain life) works with the human body. It gave me freedom, total control, ability to balance my choices. so simple it is ridiculous. yes, i lost 70 lbs with no planned workouts etc.yes, i go to mcdonalds, grilled chicken sandwich,no mayo, lettuce tomato, large coffee maybe some fries if i need them. just won't eat any fat grams till tommorrow!.simple. choose fat free replacements for half and half, milk, cheese, etc. it's all out there in every store. stay within 20 to 40 grams per day to lose. the best thing is,i can eat piles of rice, vegetables lean fish chicken turkey potatoes more bread!(leanest cuts beef pork)no fancy sauces unless they are fat free. you learn to find the fat, avoid it and or balance it to loose, and most important to maintain. forever. I am now 49. still fabulous, and i don't need the book, but i think i will order this revised copy to help a friend understand. anyone who thinks cabohydrates are fattening are so uttertly wrong. it is always the additions added to the carbs regularly that makes humans fat. people at work always say to me: how do you stay so young and in shape? how do you do that with that big plate of food? I say: but look at what the food is!!buy this and read it over and over and pay attention to the fat grams. keep track at first , and it will quickly become second nature to you. see you at the beach, i will be the one in the string bikini. i still dazzle in my bikinis. i have 15 of them.!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The T-FACTOR Diet
Wonderful book ... I bought it because I am such a fan of the Rotation Diet. Dr. Katahn has strong research and evidence for watching fat in your diet to lose weight permanently. I have learned so much from him and am keeping my weight off. Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Structure and useful information!
Excellent, simplified information about weight loss and healthy eating. The structured meal plans with corresponding recipes made healthy cooking a lot easier when coming home from a long day at work.An excellent resource and learning tool for healthy eating habits that inevitably lead to weight loss if that is your goal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Have gotten results

Product Description
The 9-Inch Diet is the healthy eating plan America has been waiting for. Far from the fad diets that momentarily populate bestseller shelves, this book promotes a lifestyle that’s simple to understand and easy to stick to. Considering that, on average, we’re now consuming more than 300 excess calories per day, switching to a smaller plate can make a big difference. It’s hard to dispute the facts: by using a 9-inch plate at every meal, we can decrease our caloric intake by 30 to 35 percent!Written by Alex Bogusky with Chuck Porter, The 9-Inch Diet tackles new diet book territory—at one turn focusing on the psychology of why we eat the way we do, while at another providing detailed instructions on how to make plate stepping stones for your garden. Full of pop culture references and expert advice, it’s the first diet book that’s as comfortable on the coffee table as it is on the kitchen table. Bogusky and Porter run what is arguably the most creative advertising agency in the country, if not the world. With years of experience manipulating the masses, two of the best tricksters in the industry explain how you as a consumer are being duped, and how you are actually a part of the conspiracy to make you fat. But more importantly, they teach you how to break the cycle. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough content here for a 135-page book
It's an interesting idea: our big, fat plates (not to mention huge glasses and larger utensils) cause us to put more food in front of us, and we eat too much. Solution: get smaller plates, cups, and forks.

That's all there is to this book. Oh, there are sources, some color photos, some crude expressions, and a lot of quotes pulled out of the text and blown up to fill entire pages. Example: "Medium isn't a size. It's an idea." The author thinks this is such a big idea it needed full-page treatment, plus this note in the text: "You might want to take a moment here, because this is heavy." Uh, I don't think so.

Is it ironic that a book about too-big plates and overeating is itself a bloated piece of work? Sure. It's also a waste of the author's advertising colleagues' time for pumping up what could've been a short magazine article into 135 pages.

Save your money and pick this up at the library if you must. Or just invest in some smaller plates and cups. You'll be fighting waste on several levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
Read it in one day.Loved all the info on how other cultures eat, how we perceive food, how our brain works in regards to perception.Lots of fun pictures, drawings and statistics.I interpreted what they were saying as basically, have smaller portions. So even if you don't want to buy new plates, every time you eat, un-super-size.Best diet ever as far as I'm concerned.Because I can still eat anything and everything in moderation!

2-0 out of 5 stars More of a brochure than a book
While I found this book informative, the information it imparts could have been included in a small brochure rather than a book -- as evidenced by the large typeface and pages of pictures. The authors put their advertising backgrounds to good use in creating a "slick" presentation.

As I said, the book is informative and does have some interesting facts.Bottom line: as our plates (and everything else in this country) have grown, so have our waistlines.Smaller plates = smaller waistlines.Do you really need a book to tell you this? There you go -- I just saved you $14.00.

4-0 out of 5 stars How come we get fat?
Long time advertising agency execs Bogusky and Porter have produced a wonderfully designed and informative "un-diet" book that makes the argument as portion sizes increased, so did American waist sizes. We've all heard that argument, the movie Super-Size Me made a mockery of the McDonald's system enough that McDonald's quietly dropped that portion increase - it all started when Bogusky and his wife moved into an older cabin, and couldn't fit brand new plates into the cupboards. After trying many ways to jam them in, he came to the realization that 60 years ago, plates were smaller. Much smaller. That eventually led him down the mental path to The 9-Inch Diet.

In this book you'll find plenty of illustrations, interesting tidbits of information (like how IKEA was selling so many flower vases because American shoppers mistook them for drinking glasses), and timelines of just how portion sizes have morphed over the last 50 years. Designed almost like an ad campaign, The 9-Inch Diet is less a diet book, and more an eye-opening explanation of just why it is so much easier now for Americans to get fat (they also show that European portion sizes are still way below American standards.) Bottom line? Change your plate size, change your portions, change your awareness, and you can change your bottom line.

(The irony of the authors doing this book is that their firm, Crispin Porter + Bogusky, does advertising for Burger King and Domino's, two willing participants in the portion size arms race. But that doesn't take away from the quality of the information, just provides an interesting filter in which to view it.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Change of THought Patterns
This makes total sense! We've changed our table settings, and are already seeing the benefit.Read this book! ... Read more

Product Description

This book describes many of the health fads and fashions of the past, as well as current trends in weight loss, examining the pros and cons of different plans. The authors help to identity effective means of losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Particular emphasis is placed on weight-loss programs aimed at young people, who are experiencing the highest rates of obesity in history.

Americans have long obsessed about their diets. For 200 years, diet fads have come and gone, sometimes reappearing under different names, but always attracting legions of followers. Many who adhere—for a time, at least—to a diet fad's requirements have little knowledge of its safety or efficiency. By the time reliable information comes to light, a fad may already have disappeared.

The Encyclopedia of Diet Fads describes many of the health fads and fashions of the past, as well as current trends in weight loss, examining the pros and cons of different plans. The authors help to identity effective means of losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Particular emphasis is placed on weight-loss programs aimed at young people, who are experiencing the highest rates of obesity in history.

This volume introduces a wide variety of weight-loss methods. Entries describe particular diets, support groups and services, or people who have changed the way Americans eat. An extensive appendix on weight-loss resources helps readers chose the most nutritionally sound program for their needs. Above all, this encyclopedia stresses nutritionally sound approaches, rather than a quick fix. As the authors emphasize, weight loss is merely one component of healthy living.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
I like this book. you can use it with the CD in the back.I believe it works for me.I go into the hypnosis pretty easy and I've noticed a difference afterwards. I don't seem so interersted in eating all the time. I like the information and explanations.

1-0 out of 5 stars no easy answer
In the past I have used hypnosis many time successfully but the voice on this recording is just annoying.

1-0 out of 5 stars New Age Gobbledygook
I wish there was a negative stars rating, but since there isn't, I rate this book 1 star.I'm amazed that seemingly learned, educated people can believe in such new age nonsense. While I believe that hypnosis is a viable science, these authors lost all credibility with me when they actually addressed the concerns people had about "past lives" being at the core of their overeating. The authors stated they were only concerned with this "present life" but inferred there was validity in the belief of reincarnation.I could not read past this point and am glad I decided to borrow it from my local library before investing hard earned money into purchasing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is well written and has some very valuable suggestions and perspectives on the tricky subject of weight control. It is not a quick fix and really, the word diet in the title is not quite right but it is still likely to make more of a difference than a hundred diet manuals - highly recommended

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty silly
I recently went for some hypnotism sessions and they seemed to do a little bit of good, so I thought I'd purchase this to reinforce the sessions and help me fall asleep at night (always went "under" at the sessions). I found the book to be totally worthless and the CD not much better. After each "session" on the CD, they play some music that is extra loud and jarring, so if you happened to go into "trance," it wakes you up. A lot of the "suggestions" are pretty ridiculous, too (tempted to eat a treat you shouldn't have? Imagine it has big, gross hair in it...or bug parts!) ... Read more

Product Description

Most people say that when they lose weight and look better, they'll like themselves more. Jean Fain suggests that we've got it all backward. "The best way to lose weight and look your best is to stop dieting and start with loving who you are." With The Self-Compassion Diet, this Harvard MedicalSchool-affiliated psychotherapist shares a revolutionary new model for lasting weight loss. Combining the best of four proven weight-loss methods--self-love, mindfulness, self-hypnosis, and group support--this unique mind-body approach cultivates true self-acceptance which paradoxically produces remarkable physical changes. The Self-Compassion Diet is available in two complementary formats. The book describes the four weight-loss methods. The audio edition guides listeners through the exercises described in the book. Used together, this powerful combination can speed learning and boost success. Topics covered include:

  • Practicing kindness to help you develop the "habit of compassion" for yourself
  • Using the power of positive suggestions to potentially double your weight loss
  • Finding "thinspiration"--hope and motivation where you least expect it

"Self-compassion," Fain teaches, "is the missing ingredient in every diet." The Self-Compassion Diet invites you to pass up deprivation and self-loathing and indulge in healthy portions of loving kindness.

I'm a dietitian who works with many people struggling to attain a healthy body weight.I will consider this book "required reading" from now on.

Two of my favorite excerpts:
--"The body is a reflection of what's going on inside: emotionally, intellectually and spiritually."

--"When you change your diet, not with a specific goal weight in mind but because your life and world will be better when you do, your body will take it from there."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone who Eats Compulsively or Impulsively
As a researcher & writer, I have read many books on how to get past an eating disorder, and I have to say this is the best. Packed with tools and tips, as well as a great deal of empathetic anecdotes of her own eating disorder past, Victoria has made this a must-read book for those struggling with eating issues.

How I wish I had had this book 36 years ago when I had bulimia, which was 7 years of pure hell. I found it quite humorous when Victoria described fishing some cake out of a trash can during an eating binge, until I suddenly recalled the disgust and self-loathing of having done it myself as a young woman struggling with this food demon.

This is not a diet book in the sense that it prescribes a meal plan, food restrictions, calorie countingor carb/fat/protein ratios. In fact, there are not even any recipes! The diet to be given is LOVE (for yourself) and Victoria tells you how.

Victoria's solutions for low self esteem, which so often leads to binging, range from spirituality with no particular religion (in fact, there is even a list of prayers from a wide variety of philosophies/religions), 12 Steps, journaling, tips on how to get to the self-love consciousness of what she calls "zero point," and proven insights such as blatant honesty. Meditation is also a strong tool, and Victoria shares her own daily ritual which is loosely called meditation, but is more like self-reflection. (For people who get bored chanting mantras, her routine would be perfect!)

Though the book doesn't prescribe a specific diet (except for love!)Victoria nonetheless strongly recommends her own way of eating, which is vegetarian. In fact, I was delightfully surprised to find she went on to become a raw vegan! She writes, "I myself have taken to the high-raw lifestyle in the past year and although I don't care to make it a religion or go a hundred percent raw, I must say that I feel younger, lighter, and more alive than I have in years." As another recovering food addict, I am happy to hear that, since the raw diet did so much to heal my own eating disorder.

This book will also educate you on the pitfalls of the SAD (standard America diet) way of eating, benefits of organic, sprouts, and other factors of health besides diet. Every chapter is filled with sidebars with all kinds of fascinating information.

Highly recommended for anyone who uses food for a substitute for love.

This is not a modern diet book with a specific list of "bad" foods and proper breathing techniques—instead, you'll find a series of well-planned questionnaires designed to help you root out the causes of your extra weight and formulate a plan that works for your specific issues. Dr. Kushner's Personality Type Diet Book looks at three aspects of weight—your diet (including both what you eat and when you eat it), your exercise pattern (be honest!), and any emotional ties that link the fridge to your search for inner peace. Each category you find yourself in—sensibly determined with percentages rather than absolute answers—has its own section of carefully tailored advice.

Kushner's plan involves a constant, lifelong attention to your food and exercise, complete with charts that continually reexamine motives as you move through life changes. The idea is that once you've clearly identified what's holding you from your ideal weight, you'll move along smoothly toward achieving it, and as with all dietary changes, these only work with self-motivation and honesty. Ultimately, he suggests realistic goals and lays out a comprehensive plan for long-term results. This is not an exciting breakthrough miracle plan of any sort—and it is likely to be ultimately more successful than any of them.

Sprinkled throughout the book are commonplace suggestions for improved health, such as walking more, keeping a food journal while beginning a program, eating more fiber and fewer trans fats, and finding substitutes for that triple-chocolate cake when you're feeling blue. The few included recipes seem obligatory rather than particularly inspired, but in general, his advice is both sound and sympathetic. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
This is an exceptional book by a medical doctor trained in nutrition.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Lessons
This book is not just another lose weight quick scheme for an author to get money. This book will lead you down a path of living a healthy lifestyle while losing weight and teaches you along the way to develop habits based on your own personality traits to keep the weight off. This along with Dr. K's diet.com site has lead me to an ongoing weight loss of over thirty pounds so far. It's real, sensible, and very doable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Advice Enveloped in Warmth and Sensitivity
Here is sound advice enveloped in both warmth and sensitivity. I liked the "nibbles" scattered throughout the book and other practical suggestions, such as how to obtain and wear a pedometer. I am having such fun in my daily walking and competing with myself for "steps instead of miles." As a health educator who taught Nutritional Smorgasbords to elementary school children and also to groups of school nurses encouraging them to include this concept of healthy eating in their school programs. I am delighted to see this much needed book in furthering the education of the public and in such a clear and kindly tone.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I think I've read every diet book ever written. They're all the same. You follow a specific plan for a while, you lose weight and then as time goes by, you drift back to your old habits and gain it back. This book focuses your weight loss on whateverhabits caused you to gain weight in the first place. It's more personalized than any other diet book I've ever picked up. And it works. I'm losing weight while getting control of my eating and exercise habits. I also have more energy and don't feel like I'm depriving myself. This book is filled with so manyhealthy snacking options and great recipes. I also find the nibble on this sayings to be very motivating.I always wondered why I kept gaining my weight back. Now I know why and am doing something about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A dream come true: The most sensible approach ever!
Where has Dr. Kushner been all my life?? I've read every diet book on the market, tried every approach--always looking for the "magic" one, but never feeling satisfied--and this one is the BEST ever.

Why? Rather than offering a once-size-fits-all formula for quick weight loss, it helps first pinpoint the possible causes of our diverse, individual struggles and then offers sensible, logical and healthy lifestyle changes I wish I'd "thought of" before: No longer do I feel like I'm on a diet, but by following Dr. Kushner & team's expert guidelines, I've adopted changes that are not only manageable in everyday domestic, social and business situations, but ones that can easily last a lifetime.

Ever since I found my "personality type" after completing the quiz, made lots of the recommended changes, met with great success (and compliments from others!) I've been thinking "Why don't people ever talk about this 'novel approach' even though, as I now see, it makes the most obvious sense in the world?"

Moreover, Dr. Kushner not only seems to understand every single one of us, but he also recognizes the human reality of our situation--that deprivation and strict dietary dictates aren't what are going to give us the long-lasting results we've all been seeking, and instead offers us valid, sensible advice and tools we all can use to fit our varied lifestyles and thereby get control of our weight once and for all. In addition to all of this, I loved the tone of the book because it seems like he's actually talking to you, doing so with warmth and a sense of humor. So apart from being enormously helpful, it's also enjoyable to read.

I feel like buying this book as a gift for every single person I know who struggles with their weight. I also feel like nominating Dr. Kushner for the "Hall of Fame of Medical Professionals who Really Understand and Care about You & Me." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of My Best Dinners
I'm on my second copy of this cook book, the first one fell apart from use. The recipes are easy to do, totaly delicious with every new one I've tried. Yes, they are so good, I have served them to dinner guests. Last night, I made the mussel recipe which was out of this world. I don't think a professional chef in a five star restaurant could get better results. In fact, I did the Halibut in Parchment and had guests take photos of the plates. Also, I love the Indian Curry too. On top of all the wonderful recipes, you loose weight at the same time! How incredible can that be? I very highly recommend it!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way to Help You on Your Weight Loss Journey
Both of my grandmothers died from Type II Diabetes. My mother has it.None of these women were morbidly obese. They all were (are) about thirty to forty pounds heavier than they should have been.I was facing this last year and didn't consider myself overweight, but when I went to the doctor and my weight had gone up to about one hundred fifty pounds, and I am five feet three inches tall, a red flag went up.I left the doctor and started thinking about what would be a good weight loss solution for me so that I wouldn't follow the path of my mother and grandmothers.Lo and behold, the next week, Kami Gray was signing books at my local bookstore.I bought a copy. Not that the information is ground-breaking or meant to be judgemental, it is meant to be a humorous kick in the pants to get you on a permanent weight-loss and maintenance path.It was the right thing at the right time for me.I've lost about thirty pounds, have met my goal weight (considering my small frame), and my doctor is pleased with my progress over the last year.I found Kami's book to be a great inspiration and easy to follow, because, really, maintaining a healthy weight is no great mystery -- it's simple, good for you and good for the planet.Kami helped me to realize that, and I am a great and grateful fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars LovingHonesty
Kami Gray...thanks for telling it straight.I have tried so many "diets" in my day.The diet food I would find myself eating made me feel sick and hungry. This book was truly refreshing, because it really isn't a diet book at all.It is simply a healthy, green, manageable and yummy way of eating everyday. What I loved most was that it made me think of eating items that I sometimes I have forgotten about.Adding more olives to my diet has helped me curb my salty tooth.Always having string cheese on hand tames the hungry lion (that resides in my belly) so that I can make more healthful choices for meals. The recipes in the back have been fun to try, easy to make and a delicious addition to my family's repertoire.Thank you for this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Made Me SAD
I found the author's point of view expressed in this book to be incredibly judgemental and as a matter of fact, I have never felt so self-conscious as I did when reading this book.I wondered who was driving around my town, sitting near me, working with me; measuring the worth of my soul by the size of my body.I spent days beating myself up after reading the book.I found that the author lacks true wisdom or understanding about what really drives obesity in women. While the author presents solid nutritional information in the book, it is not just about eating food that's on "The List".The path to overcoming deep issues with food is spiritual and personal. If you are looking for purely nutritional information, I would not advise reading this book, the inforamtion contained in this book can be found in multiple sources that don't drive you to judging yourself in the process of learning the information. If you're looking for a silver bullet to weight loss, there isn't one.If you're looking for compassion and understanding on your journey, it's not in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information With A Great Concept and an 'Attitude'
Nice idea! It appeals to me.

There is good information in the book, most of which we've all heard before, but presented with an 'attitude' and spicy language that many readers will enjoy and relate to while others will view like they would a slap in the face. She apparently comes by her style of writing honestly because throughout the book there are (sometimes funny) little stories in which her family and friends are brutally frank with her, to the point of being insulting. In return, she insults her friends, family, strangers, and celebrities. Readers will decide for themselves if they like a more gracious, gentile approach or if the blunt style is just what is needed.

The brief mention of celebrities throughout the book helps to lend credibility as to why the author is qualified to write the book, and she does talk about that as well. She is also honest as she makes sure not to claim expertise she doesn't have, as she explains why she wrote the book. I respect that.

Back to the content of the book though, the concept of getting into your dream pair of jeans is one almost all of us can relate to, and that is why we buy the book.

Especially helpful for many, even though we've heard all (or most) of the recommendations before, is the table listing habits we should develop and others we should break.

Is it the last and best diet book for all of us? No, but it may be exactly what some readers are looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars new? not to me
I was very surprised that this got such great reviews. It's not bad, but it's not new, either. The fitting into your jeans part is rather small. Much of it is about having a recommended list of foods to eat and avoiding others. Eat fruits and vegetables. Eat good carbs. Tell me something I don't know. This doesn't solve most dieters' problem of wanting to eat the foods she forbids. To think that the normal person is going to go to dinner parties and look only for the meat and vegetables isn't realistic. Slim women eat the other stuff all the time! They just don't get too full. Plus, the idea that she actually suggests you respond to a coffee server's standard question with a tirade of anti-pastry invective smacks of fanaticism. Finally, the print layout of the book made it look endlessly long. I recommend the No S Diet to help deal with eating foods in moderation and eventually Volumetrics, The Omega Plan, and Michael Pollan's work when someone is ready. They give slightly contradictory advice, but the emphasis is the same:lots of good plant foods and some good protein and fats. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars much better than any diet
My son wanted to become more fit, and his pediatrician gave him the goahead to lose a few pounds and become more active. This book has been atremendous asset in meeting these goals. It's all common sense--no weirdfood combinations or impossible prohibitions, and no outrageous exerciserequirements. His awareness of eating habits and activity habits has made ahuge difference in his weight and in his fitness. The only flaws are a fewtypos and a rather dull, humorless approach to the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!Applicable to everyday life.
The book provided safe advice with realistic solutions. The weekly worksheet allowed hands-on application of the philosophies shares within each chapter. 5-0 out of 5 stars amazing!
A one day read that can free youfrom your gluttony or other addictions, IF you stop trying to do it yourself, and let God help you.Amazing insight and a straightforward method. I have bought several to give to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the basics - almost too easy to be true!
This book has been around for over 20 years and, to date, I haven't found any weight loss method that makes more sense. The author, Diane Hampton questions the traditional idea of dieting and the notion that people need three square meals a day in order to be healthy. This may have been true in the distant past when we lived in more of an agrarian society in which people were extremely active, working outdoors and walking long distances, etc.But the majority of us work in jobs in which we are largely sedentary and, therefore, need much fewer calories than we typically take in on a daily basis. In this book, there are no food restrictions, per se, but the author does point out that when people are truly hungry - and finding true hunger is a big part of this program - they don't crave junk food, but rather find satisfaction in eating foods that hold greater nutritional value.

After following the principles outlined in this book, it was almost as if I'd had a gastric bypass! After a while I was hardly ever hungry, I could only eat very small portions because I became uncomfortably full if I ate beyond being just satisfied. At one point I even worried that I wasn't eating enough because I was hardly ever really hungry! As the author points out, this is because overweight people have a generous store of energy in the form of excess fat in the body. The body uses that stored energy, but still needs other nutrients and true hunger will signal the body's need for additional nutrients.

Although I think anyone can benefit from the principles in this book, Christians in particular will appreciate the author's emphasis on the transformative power of Christ which provides the ability to be successful in weight loss. She recognizes that people use food for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with providing fuel to the body. She explains the Lord's profound interest in our physical, spiritual and mental well-being and that He is more than able to fill the void that food has occupied in so many people's lives.

There has been some negative commentary about this book; in particular, it has been said that the author promotes unhealthy eating. To get the most out of this book, it must be understood that the purpose of this book is not to provide dietary guidelines or food recommendations. It is written to set straight the purpose of food in our lives, to recognize the power of Christ to heal and empower in the pursuit of healthy eating patterns, to discipline the body, and to promote a healthy balance between the use of food as fuel and enjoyment of the eating experience. These principle can be combined with healthy programs such as Weight Watchers, that specifically teach rehabilitation in terms of what we eat.

I, obviously, highly recommend this book to people who are tired of dead-end diets and would like to - for once and for all - get down to the root of their eating problems and come up with a livable and lasting solution for weight loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not A Diet!
Of all the diets I've tried (and that would be just about every one that has come along!), this is the only one that really works.Perhaps I should phrase that a little differently, because it's not really a diet, but an alternative way of eating.I was never truly in charge of my eating on my own, which is why the diets failed. But this method allowed God to be in charge, to give me the strength needed to control cravings, reduce intake and truly find peace with food.I have never found any other method for good eating that doesn't require calorie counting, point keeping or eating all the time but only foods that aren't very interesting. Also, most diets are fairly expensive because of specialty products or club memberships. The Diet Alternative is eating God's way; it costs less than regular meals, has no special eating plan to follow (as far as which foods to eat and when), no calories to count and no points to keep track of.Best of all, I feel great, I'm losing weight at a steady rate and I feel blessed by the Lord because I know He is doing the work for me.Try it!It can't hurt!

4-0 out of 5 stars God before food
This book is good for those who put food before God, but if that is not your problem don't bother with it. If you are not sure, I would read it just to see if you are stumbling into sin with your eating.

Product Description
There’s no cutting corners if you want to be healthy…. Introducing the bold, easy, clinically proven LOW-CARB way to lose weight now—and keep it off for life

Millions of us are jumping on the low-carb bandwagon, yet many nutritionists and health experts are questioning the long-term medical effects of these dietary choices. The Four Corners Diet is a medically tested, healthy way to cut carbs without cutting out nutrition-packed vegetables, heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, and fiber. It is easy and realistic and will help you shed weight and keep it off.

In 1996, Drs. Goldberg and O’Mara embarked on an in-depth review of the then-popular diets and the scientific literature concerning weight loss and improvements in serum lipids through diet. Sifting through hundreds of studies, they set out to create their own diet—one based on the most proven elements and soundest data from the scientific literature. The diet they created has 4 cornerstones." —the FOUR CORNERS of the title, and emphasizes:

1. Low-carb eating—to keep blood sugar levels on an even keel and hunger pangs at bay

2. Heart-healthy monounsaturated fat—and limiting consumption of saturated fat

3. Fiber—a highly beneficial form of carbs that we don’t digest

4. Pharmafoods—foods with health benefits beyond their content of vitamins and minerals and include probiotic foods such as yogurt and buttermilk, as well as many vegetables and some fruits

After first testing the diet on themselves, and both losing weight, Drs. Goldberg and O’Mara started a formal clinical study in moderately to severely obese subjects, and they and others have now tested this diet more informally with hundreds of people of varied weights and ages. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Attempt At Mainstreaming Low-Carb Diets, But Sorely Needs An Updated Version
What do you get when you mix a biochemist, an internist, and a diabetes-focused medical writer to collaborate on a book about low-carb eating? Well, you would think it would be a winning synergy of talent for writing a solid low-carb book. Unfortunately, that's not exactly what happened with The Four Corners Diet.

It was a nice idea at the time to try to look at the scientific data about livin' la vida low-carb prior to 1996 (and there wasn't nearly as much evidence in the research world then like there is now), but much of the information included in this 2004 book release is already outdated by the advancements made in studies by researchers on subjects like the health benefits of consuming saturated fat, why fiber isn't as important as once thought, and much more over the past 5-6 years. Maybe an updated version of the book is in order to include this vital information.

Nevertheless, the "four corners" of this diet include low-carb eating, "heart-healthy" monounsaturated fat (I put that descriptive phrase in quotation marks because the veracity is in doubt), fiber, and pharmafoods (nutrient-dense foods with added benefits like yogurt, veggies, and fruits). I applaud the authors for attempting to make the idea of low-carb living more palatable for people who still seem to fear fat despite all the studies showing it is not as harmful to health as most people have been told. But replacing healthy saturated fats (like butter) with questionable monounsaturated fats (like canola oil) is not helpful to those people who need to replace the carbohydrates in their diet with their new fuel source-healthy and delicious saturated fats. Coconut oil, full-fat meats and cheeses, cream, and more are all an essential part of a healthy low-carb diet and omitting these from your low-carb lifestyle will set you up to stumble and fall.

I think the authors were on the right track with the promotion of foods with added health benefits because the probiotics and phytonutrients you consume in these foods are as essential to health as low-carb eating. Overall, the book is not bad, per se, but it certainly could use a sorely-needed update.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Doable Diet
This diet is a realistic one for anyone not interested in Weight Watchers, who does not want to purchase special food from another nationally known diet company.Would buy this book again.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a healthy lifestyle!!!!
Not only have I lost weight on this diet, I also lowered my cholesteral.I originally took on this low carb lifestyle after my doctor hit me with the high cholesteral news about 5 years ago (which was long before the low carb craze of today). The original "go diet" was recommended at that time and I'm staying with the program with this book.Bottom line, simple reading, simple to implement into your life, simple to maintain. This diet works!

I have been on this diet since it was called the GO diet. Not only did I lose all the weight I desired without starving myself to death, I have also managed to keep it all off!!This diet is so simple it's a wonder everyone isn't on it.Easy changes to my eating habits has resulted in a permanent change in not only my weight but also my overall health. The sleepy feeling halfway through the day is no longer there.I do not need to sleep as many hours at night as I used to either.I love this diet!!It's given me more energy and at least a couple more hours a day of "awake" time.To me that is priceless. My 29 year old son went on it and his triglycerides were improved by it.He remains on it to this day as he too believes it is a life style change and not just a weightloss diet.I am wondering if the "reader from Alabama" even read this book or is perhaps confusing the Four Corners diet with another diet, because coffee is a "pharmafood" and is NOT discouraged on this diet.It is, in fact, specifically included in the diet.I should know because I drink at least 3 or 4 cups of coffee a day - a habit I've had for 20 plus years now.I love this diet and I love this book.I will remain on this diet for the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I lost 45 lbs. with this diet with no side effects!
I have been on the Four Corners diet since August 2002.During that time I have lost 45 lbs. and have experienced no side effects of any sort.I have always battled with my weight and I have personally tried every diet on the market with no success. This book made me realize that I needed to completely change what I eat as well as my eating habits. This diet has changed my life and I have passed it on to friends, family, co-workers, basically anyone who asked me about my significant weight loss. After reading one of the customer reviews posted on Amazon, I was deeply troubled when someone questioned Drs. Goldberg and O'Mara's research and then shamelessly promoted a competing diet.I have known the O'Mara family personally for several years and I know first hand the extensive research and hard work Dr. O'Mara has put into this book. Her entire family follows this diet and her son, who started the diet the same time I did, has lost 85 lbs. and has kept it off to this day and also experienced a significant drop to his high blood pressure. I will continue to recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight in a healthy way. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars IBS book
Book was great happy with that.It took a long time to recieve if I had known that I would have ordered from someone else

3-0 out of 5 stars not quite there for me
I tried this low-starch diet for my Ulcerative Colitis but it didn't quite do enough to fix my horrible symptoms. Low-starch is just the beginning for me. I also found, by keeping a food journal and paying incredibly close attention to my gut, that other foods needed to be removed as well.
My "bad" list: grains (all kinds not just glutens), most dairy, all sugars including most fruits and juices, all starchy foods including potatoes, winter squash.
What has cured my UC: high protein meat/fish/nuts (no soy), lots of non-starchy veggies.
Sounds a lot like the Paleo Diet but I came by mine the hard way, kind of what Carol the author did, by finding the foods my gut liked vs. hated.
UC and related diseases like Crohn's and AS seem to be very individual and the food that works for me may not work for the next girl/guy.
Thank God for almond flour and honey so I can make yummy desserts.

I salute Carol for her book but suggest to people who try it and don't quite get their cure to keep tinkering with your diet, listen really hard to YOUR gut, keep a food journal and you WILL find your own personal cure. Doctors and drug companies will not help you do this, there's no money in it. They want a lifelong customer who comes back month after month year after year.

Discover your own cure, no one else is going to do it.

The book I recommend: Life Without Bread-no recipes but a scientific explanation why carbohydrate are bad for our bodies

2-0 out of 5 stars Only about 50% right. Follow the SC Diet instead
I have had AS since I was ten years old and I was 20 years old by the time I was diagnosed. By the time I was diagnosed I was sick everyday, exhausted, my back hips and ribs were so painfull that it was hard to move much or take in deep breaths. My muscles had tightened to the point were it was hard to go up and down stairs and one wrong movement and I would get a muscle strain.

That was almost 4 years ago. Today everyone says I am the healthiest most energetic person they know. The only medication I take is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. I manage my condition through exercise (which improved my arthritis so much my doctor was stunned)and diet/herbals (which has eliminated my stomach problems).

I first bought this book right after I was diagnosed and I followed it strictly for the recommended time period. It did not help me much at all. After that I got Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Gottschall and I improved within a few days on the SCD and have stayed feeling well since.

As I said Sinclair gets about half of her diet and information right and the rest is wrong. Some of her anthopological and historical information is not accurate. For example: Yes, human health did decline in groups who switched from a hunter-gatherer diet to growing grain crops, but not because they started eating grains. There were several reasons for this but two major ones are:
1.They were not moving away from their garbage and dumbing grounds anymore
2. They were not eating a VARIED diet anymore. They usually grew one grain and that was 90% of their meals. Eating too much of anything is not good and a widely varied diet is very important. This is one of the problems with Sinclair's book. It does not allow for enough variety which causes its own problems. A friend of my mothers who followed this diet developed a severe allergy to almonds which she has never had before, because she was having them almost every day.

Another problem is Sinclair uses tons of butter, high fat, dairy, spices, and citrus. High fat, dairy, butter, spices, and citrus fruit/juice cause me to have a terrible flare up of stomach inflammation. Any type of stomach inflammation is made worse by dairy, fat and anything acidic (and no one no matter if they have AS or not should be eating all that butter and cream!). Many people cannot even eat apples.

Sinclair also says not to eat food that actually help reduce inflammation in joints and digestive tract such as bananas, peanuts/peanut butter.

I also did not care for the author. She comes across as quite arogant, bitter, and borderlines on being a conspiracy theorist when talking about cereal manufacturers.

My guess is any improvement anyone has seen on this diet is simply because it is partially following the SCD by not eating grains and potatoes. Save your money and buy Breaking the Vicious Cycle instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have AS, you must read this book....
It would be unfair to have benefited from this book and to not write a review for the benefit of others. In short, I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, I was on NSAID's and had been told by my rheumatologist that the biologics were my future. I decided to try the no starch diet. It worked. I have no pain, and take no more meds. Side effects of the diet? Lost weight. Haven't gotten sick with a flu yet. Read the book for more information! I;m so happy I found it. This short review doesn't express how grateful I am for this book, but I hope it encourages someone to give this diet a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
Following this book to some extent really helped my health problems. You can adjust the advise for your own body.I have used the advise from this book for 2 years. This is my second copy, lost my first.

My doctor said this diet concept is very healthy the way I was doing it.It significantly helped my heath issues for REAL.It's good reading even if you just want to satisfy your ciuriosity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great diet
This diet really works and it isn't hard to keep on it.Some folk say it isn't healthy, but I feel great on it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow if you travel...
The concept of this diet seem sound and healthy...I enjoyed the book and gained useful information. Personally, given that I travel extensively on our sailing vessel, the diet is not practical for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to the abs diet book
I use to excercise and after having no success at losing a couple of unwanted pounds I decided to purchase the abs diet book. The book will definitely get you in shape but you should do like I did. Only use this book as a starting point. Find out as much as you can about fitness and nutrition. Don't do like me and lose the hard earned six pack that the Original Abs diet gave me. Learn all the new scientific principles that you can. And if you have the original Abs diet book this book will definitely compliment it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Out Tonight? Eat These And Weep!
From: www.BasilAndSpice.com
Author & Book Views On A Healthy Life!

It's the weekend. Not many feel like shopping and then preparing dinner, opting for a quick bite out instead.Watch what you're putting into your mouth, it could end up on your waist!David Zinczenko, author of The Abs Diet Ultimate Nutrition Handbook includes an entire chapter titled, "The 20 Worst Foods Ever!"Eat these and Weep.

1. Fettucine Alfredo--worth up to 1,000 calories and 90 grams of fat.Order instead, whole-grain pasta with marinara.

2. Hardee's Monster Thickburger--sounds great guys, but can you afford almost 1,500 calories and 107 grams of fat?

3. Creme-Filled Doughnut With Chocolate Icing--my husband used to eat two of these every morning before work, each weighs in at 250 calories, 9 grams of fat--saturated and trans.

4. Cinnabon Classic--800 calories and 32 grams of fat; if you just can't pass it up, do like David and split it four ways.

5. Deep-Fried Twinkies or Oreos--I've never even eaten these!Avoid deep-fried foods in general.A Twinkie usually contains 150 calories/5 grams of fat.Deep frying triples the cals.

6. Cheese Fries with Gravy--1,000+ calories, contains partially hydrogenated oil.Eat a corn chip with salsa, is my quick fix.

7. Soda--the scourge of the easy-access generation, it's called "pop" where I grew up.A typical 32oz. cola is around 300 calories.Hint--drink water.

8. Bloomin' Onion--2,200 calories for an appetizer!Opt for a house salad.

9. Spinach Dip and Chips or Bread--spinach and artichokes themselves are nutritionally sound, but the cheese base of the dip jumps of the cals to around 140 for a 1oz serving.

10. Pork Rinds--this is fried pig skin and 1oz is worth 150cals, 10 grams of fat, and 500mg sodium.

11. Potpie--my kids love these, but I've searched the stores over, and the options are either loaded with fat (30g) and calories (500+) per serving, or hydrogenated oils are used for preparation.

12. Sausage or Hot Dog--three hot dogs at the average ballpark is 900 calories, and that's without the beer! They also are full of nitrites.

13. Pizza Hut Stuffed-Crust Meat Lover's Pizza--one slice equals 520 calories and 29 grams of fat.Half of the pizza is 2,000 calories. Since pizza is a Friday night special for everyone in my neighborhood, shoot for the lighter version of regular pizza, light on the cheese, add some veggies, skip the meat.I like thin crispy crust or whole wheat.

14. Cheesecake--a large piece tops out at 700 calories. If you're eating out, try the new trend called mini-indulgences.

15. Movie-Theater Popcorn--with the melted butter and mindless-consuming you may eat 1,500 calories/100 grams of fat.

16. Frosting--do not lick the bowl! Or eat it by the spoonful! The prepared versions from the grocery store contain trans fats (to keep it from melting) and a whole lot of sugar.Mr. Zinczenko adds that one or two licks are OK, a kid at heart!

17. McDonald's Chocolate Triple Thick Shake--600 calories, fat, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup.Try a homemade smoothie at home: frozen strawberries/ice cubes, soy/fat-free milk, other fresh fruits. Blend and drink!Even kids like this!

18. Chicken Wings with Blue Cheese Dressing--consider dropping the dressing, and the butter the wings are dipped into.If possible, don't even eat the deep-fried wings.Order grilled chicken breast instead.

19. Chips with Olestra--David states, "...products made with olestra also deprive the body of vitamins that require fat for absorption, plus they have some ugly GI side effects. Blech."

20. Your Calorie Kryptonite--the food you're always drawn to.For me that's the chocolate chip cookie!Enjoy your favorite food with a weekly "cheat meal."

The new Abs Diet Ultimate Nutrition Handbook offers tips, tricks, recipes and studies that show people on the move, which is most of us, how to cut calories and fat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, insightful "Diet" book
I'm hesitant to call this a diet book because this plan includes a very wide range of different foods that you can eat and still fall within its guidelines.Perhaps my favorite thing about it though is how it explains exactly why you should it what it says.It explains the health benefits of each of the types of food, what they do and why its important to throw a lot of common misconceptions out the window, ie. "Can't lose weight while eating foods with fat" It explains why fats are important and how its all a matter of eating the right kinds of fats and right balance of carbs and protein. Its a very easy read too, and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear introduction to adjusting your diet for kidney disease
This is a Vegetarian Diet Book for patients with kidney diease. Prior to buying this book I did a considerable amount of internet research on how to manage a loved one's nutritional needs for Glomerulonephritis. This book, which I initially borrowed from the library, provided the clearest explanation of the unique dietary needs and how to address them in a format that I could easily understand. It quickly helped me to clear up some misconceptions and make some positive changes in the diet. It also was among the few books that I viewed that clearly addressed the individual needs of different types and stages of kidney disease. It's the best book for patients and non-professionals that I've read to date. A friend of mine who is a Veterinarian thought it was a good reference for his patients as well. I wonder if the other reviewers understood that it was specifically geared towards preserving kidney function??? Definitely 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars useful but not as complete as I would like
I would have liked for this book to compare vegetarian products such as tofu, tempeh and seitan and to include more recipes using these products. There were only 20 pages of recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Vegetarian Diet for Kidney Disease Treatment
This book was a rare find. Absolutely fantastic - easy to read, easy to navigate, easy to dip in and out of as well as being informative and research based. Plant-based proteins are SO much better than animal proteins for our bodies and therefore this book is vital not only for vegetarians but for anyone wanting to know more about how to manage kidney disease safely and effectively. Strongly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid Book
This book is a huge disappointment. It seems to be the most basic, elementary, idiotic presentation of the obvious that is possible. It is even in big huge print so I guess it is designed for imbeciles. This is a horrible waste of paper.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginally Useful
This little book has some useful information in it, and a lot of recipes.Almost all of the recipes, however, depend upon special, expensive, mail order ingredients.I believe it is possible to make low-protein meals without such ingredients. In making bread, for instance, I mix in 0 protein tapioca starch (from the oriental food market) and white cornmeal. The bread you get isn't Wonder Bread, to be sure, but it has about half the protein content of commercial bread and it tastes pretty good.I don't find the book indispensible by any means. ...
