This handbook on dermatologic differential diagnosis and clinical management focuses on sixty-two challenging clinical cases that the authors have encountered in over fifty years of patient practice in dermatology. Each case is presented as a well-written vignette, told in a case-study style. The authors first present the background of each case concisely and including all the clinical details. They then reveal the process involved in the diagnosis and therapy involved. There is also a section on relevant questions that the doctor should be considering. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and delightful
The good doctors Shelley are my favorite dermatology authors; I have read and enjoyed many of their pithy, insightful and truly helpful texts.I learn more in a single page of reading Shelley than in some chapters of other texts!

This book, while different in style, is no different in terms of the outcome. It is more colloquial and more story-like, but as riveting and densely packed as ever. There are multiple levels of learning: each case, while unique, has something to teach about a symptom, syndrome or presentation, while the overarching theme is one of looking more deeply and thinking about underlying causes for disease. An outstanding book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every student of medicine and frustrated patient
This is a powerful and important book written by two pre-eminent physicians discussing 62 intriguing and remarkable cases of "orphan" patients who did not have a proper diagnosis or treatment for their unique condition.

These eloquent vignettes are relevant and important to medical students, residents, and physicians, and most certainly to patients who have perplexing and challenging conditions for which diagnosis or treatment are lacking.

This book uses the inquisitive nature of Sherlock Holmes to deduce and aid the forgotten or dismissed patient. It inspires me as a physician to ask more questions and seek more answers, and in the words of Churchill, "never, never, never give up."

I highly recommend it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars review of the book dermatology by gawkrodger
This book is very succinct and compared with the books by Habif and fitzpatrick is very short and does not include even half of the dermatological diseases. It discusses bacterial and fungal and viral diseases of the skin with psoriasis only. The explanation on each disease is good but this book is definitely very short and is not good for doctors or specialists in dermatology. In order to make it a good book it should include all or most diseases of the skin and explain it in the same way it is explained in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Pretty
I am a fourth year medical student going into dermatology, and I got this book for kicks because I am a book-a-holic and I liked the layout and simplicity. Probably not the first place to go for information, but might serve well as a book you leave around and flip through. I recommend the American Academy of Dermatology website as a good starting spot: check out their tutorials for medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best very short dermatology book.
The very best very short dermatology book.Need to supplement it with access to Wolf, references by Rapini, and even eMedicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and excellent
This book is well illustrated as suggested by title. The pictures of the different skin conditions are particular helpful in enhancing one's memory of the subject. It offers ideal depth for undergraduate study and is most helpful as pre-reading and review. I covered it in a week and am sounding pretty much like a dermatologist in class. Simplicity is the key to my liking of this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of the Dematology
I have read and reread this practical book several times. Each time I learned more. The pictures there are excellent examples of each type disease. The ICD coding also allows the insurance billings to be done easier. The treatment and explanations are also very practical. I just wish the book includes more case studies and different type of dermatological issues. As health care professionals it was not too clear(at least to me) if that type contagious or nor.
The book is excellent for medical practitioners, insurance billers, patients and even parents. One does not require a great deal of medical background to comprehend complex issues.

Product Description
Postgraduates studying dermatology can face a frustrating lack of appropriate revision aids: reference books are often too exhaustive or out-of-date, while undergraduate and introductory texts lack the necessary detail and depth. This book is specifically designed for postgraduate examinations, in particular the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Specialist Certificate Examination in dermatology, but also the MRCP, MRCGP, MRCPCH, RCPATH diploma in dermatopathology and the GP/CMT knowledge test. For general practitioners the book is the perfect accompaniment for the diploma in dermatology.Providing much more than a 'cheat sheet' of questions and answers, its chapters are designed to be studied in sequence, each building on the last to develop a strong overall understanding. Lists, tables and summaries help candidates to target their revision to commonly examined areas, while MCQs (multiple choice questions) following the widespread 'best of five' format allow candidates to test their knowledge. 'It is my hope that reading this book will save postgraduates from making their own notes and allow them more time to concentrate on what is truly important - looking after patients.'- James Halpern in his Preface'There is a lot to learn in Dermatology. Browsing through [this book] will help you understand the standards expected.Working through the examples will focus the mind and expose your weak spots.' - from the Foreword by Celia Moss. ... Product Description
This unique format gives you a completely portable, uniquely convenient diagnostic tool. Essentially a deck of laminated cards linked together at one corner, much like a collection of color samples, the DDxDeck allows you to compare potential diagnoses visually, side by side, without the need to flip back and forth between different pages. Each card includes a full color image and information about a particular diagnosis, as well as cross references (DDx-refs) to other potential diagnoses. Small enough to fit in your pocket, this is the perfect reference for those on the front line of dermatological diagnosis. * Provides concise details of treatment regimens. * Gives visual reference and cross references for each diagnosis. * Allows you to study images side by side using the unique DDxDeck format. * Covers over 150 conditions and all presentations you’re likely to see in practice. * Uses the same notation as you use to write prescriptions. * Allows the user to make notes on the cards which can later be deleted. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Use this almot daily!
To add to what the other reviewers have posted:

Each card in the deck has several pictures of the same entity which is really helpful, especially if the lesion distributes over various areas of the body. I can't believe how often I've had patients say "mine looked exactly like that!". I take these cards into the clinical exam room, and patients who don't seem convinced become instant believers (especially those that think all skin lesions warrant referral to a dermatologist). It really helps if you don't have internet in your exam rooms like our clinic.

4-0 out of 5 stars great pics!
This deck has great pics, and is SO convenient! I might argue that it is not comprehensive enough for all skin conditions, but this may be an impossible expectation. Seriously, you want this in your collection: has etiologies/pe/treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
A very easy reference in color, allows for immediate comparison and evaluation a great reference

5-0 out of 5 stars Derm Book
This is a great book because it has great info and pictures, but it is consolidated into a quick reference. When I am seeing pts in the clinic I don't want a 12 page description of a condition; rather just a quick review and a few good pics. If you have ever matched paint colors with the color strips this "book" works very similar. It is a stack of cards essentially broken up into loose categories of similar conditions (ie: vesicular rashes)... you can almost look up the discription and flip the pictures until you find one that matches... the info is on the back ofthe cards mainly, some captions are on the front under each picture.

Its a great book, esp. you don't want every known detail in the world on a condition and just the facts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy Dandy resource
This is really neat. The pictures are great and very user friendly. Can fit in your lab coat.It covers many of the major derm situations in primary care.I like the treatment section, it seems more thorough than Habif's larger red book.I'm fortunate to live in Dr. Habif's neck of the woods and attend his wonderful lectures so it helps that I know and respect the author. ...
