From the supplier: The ongoing debate regarding the advantages of minicomputers over microcomputers and vice versa should be put to rest because it is only hampering end-user decision-making about property management systems. Choosing a platform should no longer be the main issue when making a purchasing decision since it is the programs themselves that make a system effective. Minicomputers have advantages and disadvantages over microcomputers just as micros have advantages and disadvantages over minis. What makes one superior to the other is how much of a particular program is patched and retrofitted. When evaluating property management programs, prospective buyers could employ the same criteria that they might use when evaluating a platform. These factors includes power, price, communications, performance, technical merits, support and service, and speed.

From the supplier: The National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) has delayed making a decision on its controversial plan to convert to for-profit status. Investment bank Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette and consultant McKinsey & Co devised the plan, suggesting it as NCCI's best means of obtaining the $150 million in capital needed to upgrade its data collection systems. Regulators have warned that NCCI will probably lose its exclusive access to workers' compensation data if it gives up its nonprofit status.

From the supplier: The California Homeowners Bill of Rights drafted by Senator Art Torres has met with some strong opposition in the California Assembly. The bill, which was meant to protect consumers from insurance company abuses, has been delayed in committee because of insurer opposition. One major point of contention is the right of insurers to question policyholders under oath without legal representation. Torres' bill would allow consumers legal representation and advance notice of the scope of the questioning. Insurers claim that the ability to question policyholders in this fashion is needed to reduce fraudulent claims.

From the supplier: The Business Roundtable endorsed Rep Jim Cooper's health care reform, the Cooper Managed Competition Act, despite intense lobbying from the Clinton Administration. Cooper's health care reform plan differs from that of Pres Clinton in that it does not have mandates for either universal coverage or employer-paid health insurance. The Cooper plan would control medical inflation by creating health insurance alliances for businesses with a maximum of 100 employees and by mandating the use of managed care.
