Product Description
How did you learn to speak?

You probably don't even know. You listened to your parents, gradually understanding the meanings of sounds, words, and then whole sentences. Then, once you had absorbed or assimilated the meanings of the word associations, you began to link words and form your own sentences. Assimil applied this same natural process adapting it to the abilities of adults, young and old.

You assimilate in two phases:
The Passive Phase
The Active Phase

The first step is to familiarize yourself with the new language through daily sessions lasting 20 to 30 minutes. You listen and read and you understand what is being said through the translation provided. You repeat each sentence aloud to practice your pronunciation, with the help of easy phonetic spellings and, better still, recordings. During the Passive Phase you shouldn't try to form sentences. Just immerse yourself in the language. Every seventh lesson you'll find a review of all the points covered in the previous six lessons and a summary of the main grammar points learned during the week. The key to success is the daily routine.

The first two weeks are crucial. The rest will come naturally.

The Active Phase starts when you have acquired enough passive knowledge around Lesson 50.

This phase continues alongside passive learning, and involves revising Lesson 1, then Lesson 2 and so on, completing one active and one passive lesson each day.

In the Active Phase, you cover up the text in the target language and, using the translation on the opposite page, try to say it out loud or in writing if you wish. The Active Phase continues throughout the entire second half of the book. For most major languages, it takes about five months to assimilate a course of 100 lessons.

You'll be amazed at your results! During this second phase, you will be building sentences with ease and this encourages you to go on and complete your course.

A With Ease course will enable you to reach a level of fluent everyday conversation. ... Read more

Recorded by artists such as Nadeem Ali, Jawaid Ahmad Danish, and Uzma Danish, the poems and stories in "Urdu for Children, Book Two" are now available on CD. Students are encouraged to sing along with the stories and poems, which are set to original musical scores and sung by a solo artist or with a children's chorus. Developed by trained public school teachers with backgrounds in teaching Urdu as a heritage language, the series helps meet the needs of a rapidly growing Urdu-speaking community in North America. Similar in method to the "activity-based learning" introduced in Book One, Book Two is designed for children seven to eight years of age and older. The CDs bring the stories and poems to life and are an important resource in helping children learn and preserve their culture and heritage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the Whole Series-- They fit in your Breast Pocket
This is the best language book I've ever bought, and I speak good German and Spanish in addition to English.I picked this book up used for [cheap] at a cozy bookstore in historic Julian, CA.Frustrated to death with tapesets that have no booklets, booklets that are impossible to read, rote memorization of "vocab" lists that aren't used in conversation-- this book was a refreshing alternative. As someone who speaks English and German, Danish was an easy-to-comprehend mixture of the two.The book starts out with hundreds of common phrases "I'm from America" "I'm here on business," "Where can I find good theaters..." and then introduces more vocabulary words. They've brought out all the essentials of the language, in a clear, pocket-size manual you can carry around in your shirt pocket while bicycling Europe. If you get one Danish book, get this one-- and buy some others from the set.Say it in Japanese, Say it In Norwegian, Say It in German, Turkish, Arabic, French... the list is comprehensive. All the books follow the same excellent model.I totally disagree with the reviewer who hated the phonetic symbols. What's so hard about the shwah (backwards e), long a, short a, etc.?Any high-school grad should understand these symbols. It's the ONLY way to communicate pronunciation clearly. That's why dictionaries use it.Can you understand the dictionary? However, her recommendation of the other tapes was helpful... maybe I should check those out!

1-0 out of 5 stars Select a different book
This pocket size book attempts to teach the reader basic phrases and sentences in Danish by printing them phonetically in English. This is a great concept- but instead of spelling things foe-net-ik-lee, they use allof those annoying symbols that one generally finds in a pronunciation keyat the begining of an american dictionary (the upside down and backwards e,the little lines over an a or an e, etc. for example). So unless you arean English major and understand the meaning of these american languagesymbols- you will never understand this book. Also, even when you try tofigure out what all the symbols mean- the pronunciation that you end upwith sounds nothing like the danish word. My husband is from Denmark and Ihave been struggling with the language for years.I suggest that you getColloqial Danish with the audio tapes if you don't know anyone who candemonstrate the pronunciation for you. ... Excerpt: Greenlandic is an Eskimo-Aleut language spoken by about 57,000 people in Greenland and Denmark. It is closely related to the Inuit languages in Canada, such as Inuktitut. The main dialect, Kalaallisut or West Greenlandic, has been the official language of the Greenlandic autonomous territory since June 2009; this is a move by the Greenlandic government to strengthen the language in its competition with the colonial language, Danish. Other dialects are East Greenlandic (Tunumiisut) and the Thule dialect Inuktun. Greenlandic is a polysynthetic language that allows the creation of long words by stringing together roots and suffixes. Its morphosyntactic alignment is ergative. Nouns are inflected for one of the eight cases and for possession. Verbs are inflected for one of the eight moods and for the number and person of its subject and object. Both nouns and verbs have complex derivational morphology. Basic word order in transitive clauses is Subject Object Verb. Subordination of clauses is done by the use of special subordinate moods. A so-called fourth person category enables switch reference between main clauses and subordinate clauses with different subjects. Greenlandic is notable for its lack of a system of grammatical tense, as temporal relations are normally expressed through context, through the use of temporal particles such as "yesterday" or "now" or sometimes through the use of derivational suffixes or the combination of affixes with aspectual meanings with the semantic aktionsart of different verbs. However, some linguists have suggested that Greenlandic does mark future tense obligatori...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=647131 ... Read more

Product Description
Pimsleur has been a recognized name in language training for decades, and updated Audiofy audiobook chip editions of Pimsleur Compact courses combine a handful of cassettes or CDs onto a tiny memory card - yielding an affordable, durable, more portable product. Each Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds an unabridged Compact course with five hours of digital audio, and saves the last listening position automatically (unlike CDs).Created for adult learners, this Pimsleur Compact Danish edition offers ten half-hour lessons, providing "meet and greet" conversation skills to enrich upcoming travel, begin adjusting as a new arrival, or surprise and bond a bit more closely with a foreign-born relative. Like all Pimsleur courses, the lessons emphasize good pronunciation and common courtesy, allowing practical interaction with native speakers. This Audiofy audiobook chip edition can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) using an SD memory card slot or adapter, like those for digital cameras. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above).Audiofy audiobook chips avoid the lengthy downloading or "syncing" of other digital formats. Audiofy audiobook chips offer "no look" navigation, announcing your listening position with two button clicks and letting you jump to other lessons in seconds. It's also ideal for anyone hindered by the small displays on some devices. Since university linguist Dr. Paul Pimsleur designed courses that are almost entirely audio-based, they are suitable for traveling, commuting or exercising. With Audiofy audiobook chips, this proven technique is now more convenient than ever. ... Read more
