4-0 out of 5 stars A Must For All Music Hall Fans
Roy Hudd loves Music Hall, Vaudeville, or Variety as it was known after the war. His affection for the subject shows through in his writing, especially when he gives accounts of acts he saw as a child. This bookcovers the days from the end of the war to the period when television andcinema had all but wiped out old-time 'turns'. My primary criticism is thatthe book doesn't cover a wide enough period.

In the 1980s and 1990s, livecomics and speciality acts have come back into vogue, and it would not havebeen unfeasible for the book to have covered the entire post-warperiod.

I can only hope companion volumes covering the adjacent periodswill follow soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars I adore this book.
This is a fantastic resource for learning about medieval celebrations. It gives information such as costumes, decorations, recipes (which are quite yummy!), and even music of the times.

A nice little book covering a multitude of subjects. Was more interested in recipes and costumes, but found the other information fascinating. the costume side of things was good.

Pity its so hard to order from overseas

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Planning a medieval Party?
If you are planning a Medieval Celebration of any kind this is a great book to buy. It has many tradations recipes and lots of fun games a must have.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Information for Event Planning
My fiance and I purchased this book as we are planning a medieval wedding. The title and description of this book implied that we would find lots of valuable information on that topic. Well, we found lots of valuable information for feast planning, or putting on a re-enactment (a la Society for Creative Anachronism), and very little concerning period wedding traditions. The most interesting parts were the recipes/redactions and the instructions for medieval dance steps. There are also several pages that contain sheet music for period songs. If you are looking to put on a reenactment or feast, this is the book for you. If you are looking for anything else, I suggest you look elsewhere. ... Read more

Product Description
The late Sir Harry Secombe was known and loved throughout the world as a comedian, singer, and Goon, and his death in April 2001 prompted many tributes to his great talent and kindness. He also proved himself to be a writer of considerable wit and calibre, with two bestselling novels and the highly praised first and second volumes of his autobiography, entitled Arias and Raspberries (1921-1950) and Strawberries and Cheam (1951-1996) respectively. Harry Secombe: The Collected Memoirs brings together both volumes of Harry Secombe's autobiography - covering his childhood, the war, Variety, the Goons and on - and includes an additional section covering the last few years of his life. This section contains writing from Sir Harry himself and contributions from his family. This commemorative volume, funny and moving by turn, encapsulates the perceptions of one of Britain's foremost entertainers and illustrates why he became so well-loved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST WRITER ON THE ART OF THEATRE
Just as James Agee (deceased) and Pauline Kael (alive, but retired) remain the best writers on the Art of Film, so Kenneth Tynan (again, deceased) is still the best writer on the Art of Theatre. Tynan wrote so beautifully and wittily and lovingly about the stage and the people who inhabit it and he was also responsible in a major way for the success of the National Theatre of Great Britain along with his friend and professional partner, Laurence Olivier.(an essay on Olivier is one of the high-points of this book.)It was Tynan who "discovered" Harold Pinter, who "made the career" of John Osbourne and was a major factor in reviving the career of Noel Coward, after years of neglect:as Literary Manager of the National, it was Tynan who urged a revival of Coward's classic "Hay Fever."

This collection of 50 essays is absolutely essential reading for anyone who has a love of theatre or simply of celebrity and star power. No one writing today writes as well as Tynan did nor consistently shows his affection for Show Business. If you regularly read today's so-called critics, you come away with the feeling that they become INSULTED that plays they dislike were actually produced!

I highly recommend this book.It is passionate, charming and, at times, really funny stuff. But, please, do yourself a favor and haunt every used book shop you know to find a copy of Tynan's out-of-print collected theatre reviews from the U.S. (he wrote for "The New Yorker") and England called CURTAINS.It is absolutely the best book of criticism you'll ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fireworks galore!
Tynan was one of the century's great journalists, capable of capturing a performer in two paragraphs, yet equally adept at longer essays, several of which are collected here. The pieces on Stoppard and Louise Brooks areparticularly fine. The reviewer below is right: the writing is to die for;but, compared to Epstein, Tynan is a super-hevyweight, with ten times theforce and prose-potency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and funny
Enormously entertaining and the writing is to die for. Epstein regards Tynan as a lightweight and in a way I guess he is, but a skilled lightweight is still a thing of beauty and Tynan IS skilled. I staredunderlining favorite passages but had to stop because I was underliningalmost everything. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive yet lacks the spirit of the person
Garry Jenkins has written a thorough book on the life of a man who is, arguably, one of the greatest thespian talents in modern times; however, it is obviously without input from its subject, Daniel Day-Lewis.This book does give interesting detail of the romance of Day-Lewis' parents, (his father was Poet Laureate Cecil Day Lewis; his mother, a member of the Balcon family theater dynasty), as well as the story of the actor's odd aristocratic upbringing. The rest is merely information that a fan could have gleaned from various media resources, especially entertainment magazines. In Jenkins' defense, Daniel Day-Lewis, just turned forty, is very much a developing subject. The author, currently writing a sequel, is fortunate in that respect ... Read more

Product Description
This volume contains Parts I and II of the original works. The purpose of this book is primarily practical. Its design is to place before those who are interested in the revival of our national dances some examples of a particular type of folk dance which has not perviously attracted the attention of collectors, and to present these in such a form that they may be learned without the aid of a special instructor and by those who have never seen the dances performed. No trouble was spared to note the dances with all possible accuracy, and to find simple and unambiguous language in which to describe them. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sword Dances of Northern England
The Sword Dances of Northern England, originally published in 3 volumes between 1911 and 1913, was the definitive book on the somewhat obscure traditional hilt-and-point sword dances of England, namely the longsword dance of Yorkshire and the rapper dance from the area around Newcastle upon Tyne in the old counties of Northumberland and County Durham. Both of these traditional dances are performed by revival teams spread across both the UK and USA, as well as some traditional teams in their home areas of England - keeping their local traditions alive.

Although Ivor Allsop's book "Longsword Dances" has now supplanted it as the best book on longsword, it remains the definitive guide to rapper, although there were some inaccuracies and in his introductory chapter he tries to draw conclusions about the origins of the dance that are not tenable from the evidence he presents. Although it would be possible to perform the dances based on the information in this book alone, it would be very difficult and I doubt performers would be able to get the style right unless they had seen the dance performed before.

The book has long been out of print - I believe the last reprint was in 1977. This reprint is of volumes 1 and 2 only, and appears to be a photostat of the original printing. It is unfortunate that volume 3 was not included, and the quality of the reprints of Sharp's photographs of the contemporary dancers is very poor. For this reason I have docked a star.

The reprint therefore contains notations for the Kirkby Malzeard, Grenoside, Sleights and Flamborough longsword dances, and the Swalwell, Earsdon and Beadnell rapper dances. There is also a notation for the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, which seems somewhat out of place! Unfortunately, the very popular Winlaton rapper dance was in volume 3 and is not included in this reprint.

In conclusion, a fair effort and well worth the low price compared with copies of older prints from antiquarian booksellers, but it is a shame they could not have included the third volume as well. ... Read more

A central concern of this book is the understanding of the nature of dance, and its use in primary schools. This book is not intended to be read from cover to cover. Theory is cross-referenced with lesson examples and a glossary so that the teacher can bring together dance input, ideas, content and children's developing abilites, and can find ideas, explanation, and understanding within the context of the teacher's own syllabus and lesson plans. For this reason some of the material is repeated under different sections. The 52 lesson examples are not written as recipes but are suggestions intended to spark off ideas and promote alternative ways of interpreting whatever is being discovered or investigated. ... Product Description
Indian Dance is not what it was. The classical dances of the subcontinent have undergone fission, have been deconstructed and have become part of a contemporary dance idiom. Some of the most innovative work has taken place because of interaction with Western dancers or because it was conceived in a Western and/or global context. Thus the British experience-the work and contribution of Indian dance practitioners based in Britain and working primarily in a British/European context-have been very important for the new development of Indian dance. ... From the supplier: The British national curriculum provides a useful example for the teaching of physical education in the US. The UK 1988 Education Reform Act set attainment targets in core curriculum subjects at key stages five to seven, seven to 11, 11 to 14 and 14-16 years of age. Accountabilty, teacher education and pupil assessment has improved the quality of British physical education. Experience has shown that political support, broad-based consultation and speedy implementation would be necessary to successfully introduce a national curriculum in the United States.

Product Description
Dance movement therapy is the use of creative movement and dance in a therapeutic alliance. It uses the relationship between motion and emotion as a vehicle through which an individual can engage in personal integration towards a clearer definition of self. During the last 10 years, dance movement therapy, along with the other arts therapies, has consolidated as a separate and valid therapy in health, education and the voluntary and social services. "Dance Movement Therapy" offers dance movement therapists and students, as well as allied professionals, an insight into state-of-the-art DMT practice in the UK. The first book to document UK practice, it aims to provide a clear and balanced picture of representative work in the field, from its use with the mentally ill, learning-disabled and emotionally disturbed, through to high-functioning adults. Including both descriptive accounts and those based on research and academic scholarship, they highlight the different methods used within different settings. No one particular model is stressed. This book should be of interest to professionals in training and in practice in dance movement therapy, mental health and education. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic study on the subject
A fundamental and absolutely recommendable study on its subject, based on a vast bibliography, by a famous scholar and editor of classic bagpipe music. However, Mr. Cannon's book having been written over two decades ago a more thorough update than the revised edition would be welcome. Readers more specially interested in the historical topics will find further essential publications, including Mr. Cannon's excellent edition of Joseph MacDonald's early bagpipe treatise and Hugh Cheape's recent book on the history of Scottish bagpipes (H. Cheape, Bagpipes, A National Collection of a National Instrument, Edinburgh, NMS, 2008).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overall book about highland pipe
An excellent book, well researched, clearly written. It remains by far the best single book that I have read about highland pipe, start here.

5-0 out of 5 stars For pipers, this is a must!
One of the best comprehensive examinations of the Highland pipes out there! Historical information is clear and unusually accurate, avoiding romance. Covers the development of the GHB and its attendant uses andtraditions from its earliest appearances through the present day; truly animpressive work. Cannon's scholarship is unassailable.
