Product Description
This complete scholarly edition of the collection of manuscript choreographies from c.1565-c.1675 associated with the Inns of Court is also a full-length study of these sources. It offers practical reconstructions of the dances and provides a selection of musical settings simply but idiomatically arranged for four-part instrumental ensemble or keyboard. Part One centres on the manuscript sources, which transmit the Almain, and on the trends and influences that shaped its evolution in Britain from c. 1549 to c. 1675, taking account of both music and choreography. In viewing the Almain within its broader historical context, Ian Payne throws new light on the dance, arguing that, together with the "measures" which accompany it in the choreographies, it owes an even greater debt to the English country dance than has hitherto been acknowledged, a popular style that received its fullest expression in Playford's "English Dancing Master" of 1651. The second part of the book focuses on the dances themselves. The steps are described in detail and reconstructions provided for the nine Almains and some of the other measures included in the manuscripts.Part Three comprises a complete critical edition of the manuscripts. These easily performable versions of the dances should be a useful aid to those wishing to learn the dances, reconstruct them for stagings of Shakespeare's plays or Jacobean masques, and for dance historians. ... Product Description
This is the first book, scholarly or popular, on Elsie and Doris Waters, the most successful female double-act in the history of British music hall and variety. They distinguished themselves in the male-dominated field and in the movement of female artists who, after WWI, elected not to marry, the better to pursue their careers. Elsie and Doris Waters wrote almost all their own comic songs and sketches, created an original gynocentric comedy, anticipating feminist movements, controlled their means of production in the male-dominated British stage, radio and recording industries, and performed together in Britain and around the Commonwealth for half a century. This study shows them to be precursors of contemporary female double-acts and patter-based comedians and ensembles such as French and Saunders, Flanders and Swann, Beyond the Fringe, and Monty Python's Flying Circus. The study also contains 50 transcribed songs and sketches, their original compositions and arrangements, from recordings on 78 rpm gramophone records made between 1929 and 1944. The words to their entire oeuvre of songs and sketches have never before been available in print. ... Read more

47. Gendering Bodies/Performing Art: Dance and Literature in Early Twentieth-Century British Culture

Isbn: 0472106163

Product Description
Gendering Bodies / Performing Art is the first book that attempts a conceptual integration of dance and literary history in British culture. It attempts to make visible the role of dance in creating, reinforcing, and challenging developments in aesthetic practice and ideology in which both dance and literature participated.
Koritz integrates chapters on dance and dancers- from music hall ballet girls of the 1890s to the prestigious season of Diaghilev's Russian Ballet- with discussions on how major literary figures such as Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, and T.S. Eliot used dance to further their own aesthetic agendas. In doing so, she provides an illuminating analysis of the connections between literature and dance, and explores the ways in which these two arts actively engaged in cultural processes encompassing both.
". . . provocative and stimulating . . . an invaluable addition to the work that is already available on turn-of-century theater/culture. . . ."--Vivien Gardner, Manchester University
"Reaching between the poles of popular music hall and the Ballet Russe, Koritz addresses a series of interrelated, mutually informing discourses in which we overhear the language of the literary community in its accolades and in its outcries. Koritz's book will prove useful to a wide variety of readers; many scholars of English literature will undoubtedly use this book to the fullest, turning to it again and again as a contextual primer for performance issues in their field."--Cheryl Herr, University of Iowa
Amy Koritz is Co-Director of the Cultural Studies Program and Assistant Professor of English, Tulane University.

Product Description
In the late 1980s the rave phenomenon swept the youth culture of the United Kingdom, incorporating the generations' two newest social stimulants: modern electronic dance music and a notorious designer drug known as Ecstasy. Although the movement began in rebellion against mainstream culture, its underground dynamism soon attracted the interest of novelists, screenwriters, and filmmakers who attempted to reflect the phenomenon in their works. Through artistic and commercial popularization, the once obscure subculture was transformed into a pop-culture behemoth with powerful links to the entertainment industry.

This study deals with the transformative effects of film, television and literature on club culture. Chapters furthermore reflect club culture's own effect on crime, ethnicity, sexuality and drug use. As the study traces artistic depictions of club culture's development, each chapter focuses on individual books, films and television shows that reflect the transformation of the club culture into what it is today. ... Product Description
Popular Music was a powerful and persistent influence in the daily life of millions in interwar Britain, yet these crucial years in the development of the popular music industry have rarely been the subject of detailed investigation. For the first time, here is a comprehensive survey of the British popular music industry and its audience. The book examines the changes to popular music and the industry and their impact on British society and culture from 1918-1939. It looks at the businesses involved in the supply of popular music, how the industry organised itself, and who controlled it. It attempts to establish the size of the audience for popular music and to determine who this audience was. Finally, it considers popular music itself - how the music changed, which music was the most popular, and how certain genres were made available to the public. ... Read more

Joining New Families is based on a research study which followed 61 children who were placed, between 5 and 9 years old, with adoptive or permanent foster families. Most of the children had previously been maltreated. The study focused on the problems and strengths that these children brought to their new families; how the new families coped; and the factors associated with the placements becoming stable and secure. The authors provide a detailed presentation of the findings from this unique study and highlight the implications for policy and practice. Key factors examined include

Product Description
This is a perceptive and critical account of the Royal Ballet's first 75 years, tracing the company's growth and extraordinary cultural importance. Dancing through the Blitz, winning an international reputation in a single New York performance, and adding to the glamour of London's Swinging Sixties, Zoe Anderson vividly portrays the extraordinary personalities who created the Royal Ballet, from Ninette de Valois to founding music director Constant Lambert through to chief choreographers Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. She records the dancers: Fonteyn, Robert Helpmann and Moira Shearer, mould-breaking artists like Lynn Seymour, golden partnerships like that of Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell, through to stars of today like Bussell, Cope, Cojocaru, Kobborg and Rojo, and guest artists who became part of the company, from Nureyev to Guillem. Giving full attention to dance style and performance standards, Zoe Anderson will put Royal Ballet repertoire in context, showing its place in ballet history and in the history of British arts. She looks at the bad times, as well as the good, examining the controversial directorships of Norman Morrice and Ross Stretton, and the criticism fired at the company as the Royal Opera House closed for redevelopment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Treat For Nostalgia Fans
This is indeed a rare treat, being only one of a handful of books I know on this topic.

The publisher is 'This England,' well known for its magazine of the same name and the pocket-sized sister publication 'Evergreen.'

Like the magazines, the book is a treasure trove of all that is British from (mainly) an era long gone.Drawing from individual articles originally published in the magazines, we are treated to mini biographies of all the major British bandleaders of the time and many not so well known.

Of the once popular you can read about Ambrose, Jack Hylton, Lew Stone, Roy Fox, Carroll Gibbons, Geraldo, Jack Jackson, Ray Noble and so on. From the American drawl of Gibbons to the cockney of Geraldo these personalities and their bands were once instantly recognizable to the public.

Wartime bands include The Squadronaires and The Skyrockets and features on all the major service bands and also the once very popular accordion bands round out the first section.

The second section contains mini-biographies of all the popular leaders of the day and there is a list of ten top tunes from each year beginning in 1920 and ending in 1952.

The book is packed with illustrations throughout and with its many insights into the period it is, quite simply, a delight.

A companion volume focuses on the smaller bands and the singers. This is also a good reference work, well written and well illustrated.

Drew.
