    Extractions: Oil Oil paints have been used for centuries and in the beginning were created individually by each artist. Earth pigments and minerals were ground and combined with thick oils (usually seed oils or sometimes animal fat). How fortunate we are to have at our fingertips a huge variety of brands and colorsmixed and ready to go. But if the tone you are seeking is not readily available, do not despair. Mixing and blending colors is eventually necessary for most artists; and, although it can be challenging, mixing can be the easiest way to find that perfect tone. Individual color blending is also the most immediate way to achieve a personal palette. This group of created colors should coordinate with your style and genre and may even come to be associated synonymously with your work. Along with the benefits of personally created colors will come the opportunity to use these colors in unusual ways. Is it time to consider creating a special color or colors that will become your "signature"? All manufacturers of oil paints offer a great selection of colors, from rich, pure pigment colors to slightly blended colors to heavily blended tones for special applications. The least "diluted" colors are referred to as primary colors and are those colors comprised of the purest pigments true to the tone they represent. Because primary colors are not altered with other color components, they are a great basis upon which to build your new colors. Secondary colors are colors blended by combining closely related pigment colors. Either of these groups is ready to be combined into possible new hues. Premixed, unusual tones are usually a combination of several hues and are difficult to use in color blending. This is especially true if repeat blending is desired because exact measurement of the tone base and additives is required.

    Extractions: Drawing As long ago as the time of the Pharaohs, marks on various materials have helped to document the history of the ages. Originally, these scribing instruments were nothing more than long strips of metal, cast into slender shapes and used to scribe faint lines and images on papyrus reed paper. Then slender sticks of lead were crafted, which left darker, more permanent marks. Although lead has not been used in pencils for over a century, this ancient identification still remains. Today's pencils have graphite cores, but the pointed centers are still referred to as "lead." The creation of this graphite mixture is a process involving considerable precision. Large quantities of graphite and clay are placed inside huge drum grinders. These two components are crushed into a fine powder to which water is added and mixed well. After the excess water is pressed from this mixture, the sludge left behind is air dried and hardened for several days. It is then re-ground, forming an ultra-fine powder to which water is added, this time creating a soft paste. This paste is extruded into long thin pencil length sticks that are dried and then heated in a special oven to 1,800 degrees. This high heat insures a smooth and hard lead with uniform strength that will perform as expected in drawing and writing tasks.

Draw these pictures on graph paper and try to figure out where the points would fall on the plane of the drawing. Can you draw the railroad track? Solution To draw in perspective, draw a horizon line and draw a vanishing point anywhere on the horizon. Lines which are parallel in real life are drawn to intersect at the vanishing point. Distant figures appear smaller but have the same shape and proportions as they would close up. In geometry, we would say that the figures are similar.

You can also, I believe, add gloss medium after the painting has dried, to make it shinier (you might want to check this with the supply catalogs). I have discovered pastels, and I love them. But one recurring problem I have is with shadows. For instance, I've just painted three gourds which were on my windowsill. They are mostly orange/yellow in color. What do I use for the shadow areas? The grooves in the gourds are quite dark, yet I'm suddenly timid at reaching for those dark purple/blue colors. I'm afraid I'll muddy the brilliant oranges. I am using the Golden Section to create a composition. I have calculated all the mathematical formulas to create the design, but I don't know how to superimpose my image onto this Golden Section design. Quite simply, is there any advice for using the rules of composition? Most good artists have gone through this process; and wondering and questioning can even be a good thing, because it means that the artist cares much about his or her output, and his/her integrity. This uncertainty may continue for a long time, but I believe it lessens with experience. As you mature as an artist, you will be able to use the aesthetic lessons you've learned to produce your art; gradually your 'inner voice' will tell you how to make your art, and you will be less susceptible to the outer pressures of teachers and others.
