Over three decades of dictatorship followed by military rule ended in 1990 when Jean-Bertrand ARISTIDE was elected president. Most of his term was usurped by a military takeover, but he was able to return to office in 1994 and oversee the installation of a close associate to the presidency in 1996.

Most of the tourists who come to visit are initially attracted to its magnificent golden sandy beaches that extend over one-third of its 870-mile coastal regions that define three-quarters of its borders. This is particularly true of the northern Atlantic side of the country. It is thus in this region that the majority of tourist attractions, hotels and resorts are concentrated, particularly in the 40-mile zone between Puerto Plata and Cabarete However, there are also many others who believe that it is within the interior of the country that the true charm and beauty of the Dominican Republic can be found. Its three main mountain ranges run roughly parallel to each other in an east/west direction, and are most impressive. The Cordilla Centrale is the highest mountain range on the island, extending from the interior of Haiti all the way to San Cristobal in the south, close to the capital of Santo Domingo. It includes Pico Duarte, the highest mountain in the Caribbean at a height of 3,175 meters (over 10,000 feet). During the winter season, thick snow can frequently cover its peak. Further to the north where it begins by stretching along the Atlantic coast, the Cordillera Septentrionale reaches from Monte Cristi near the Haitian border to San Francisco de Macoris. This mountain range divides the Atlantic coast and the fertile valley of the Cibao, where were formerly located the gold mines which brought Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards rushing back to the island after his initial "discovery" of America. The Cordillera Oriental, on the east, is the smallest of the three main mountain ranges. Two more mountain ranges are Neiba Sierra and Sierra de Bahoruco both in the southwest of the country. These ranges partially surround the unusual inland saltwater Lake Enriquillo, the lowest point in the Caribbean at 27 meters below sea level.
