Product Description
Cycling the open road has its pleasures but it can also be intimidating, especially for the novice or the parent with young children. Fortunately, there's another option for those cyclists who have something a little more peaceful and recreational in mind: the paved bike path. Free of cars, red lights, and exhaust fumes, recreational paths are popping up everywhere. In The Best Bike Paths of the Southwest, Wendy Williams has done you the favor of finding them in advance.Organized by state, The Best Bike Paths of the Southwest is the only comprehensive listing of these community treasures, describing fifty-six paths and detailing everything you'll need to know about each one:
-- A map of each state, showing you where the path is
-- A detailed description of the path, including mileage
-- General background, including the history of the path and any useful tourist information
-- The level of difficulty, type of scenery, and condition of pavement
-- Availability of food and bathrooms
-- Directions, including the most accessible parking area

Whether you want to explore San Francisco's East Bay, discover Arizona's breathtaking Sabino Canyon, or cruise along Nevada's Truckee River, there's a bike path waiting for you. So fill your water bottle, pack a lunch, pump up your tires, and prepare for a great ride! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
The book was published in 1996 and with the extensive construction in new bike paths that occurred in metropolitan Phoenix and Tucson since that time, it is very much out-of-date.

Also, since when is northern (and southern for that matter) California in the southwestern US?

4-0 out of 5 stars Got bikes?Get book!
This book is an excellent resource for safe bike paths throughout the Southwest. The detailed maps, directions for best parking, and stops along the bike paths make this book an ideal resource for those who take their bikes with them on vacation!

An important element of the book is the traffic-free bike path focus. This is perfect for families with children and others who don't wish to share the road with cars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection of Bike paths in the southwest
This book covers bike pathsand routes in several cities in Arizona (14 routes), Southern California (6 routes), Northern California (26 routes), Nevada(2 routes) and Utah (8 routes). There are no maps of the routes but the author does a pretty good job of describing them. The descriptions are pretty detailed including such things as places to park, restroom locations, places to eat, level of difficulty, and condition of pavement.

This book seems to be written with the casual cyclist in mind.If you're looking for a route where you can "hammer" out 40 miles at a fast pace then this book is not for you.If you're looking for a place to enjoy a leisurely weekend ride with friends or children, then this book was designed with you in mind,For example, in their level of difficulty ranking the authors consider a 3-mile route with rolling hills to be "challenging."

The only negative comment I have about the book was that it was written about 5 years ago so some of these routes may have changed over the years. For most of the routes, the author does provide a phone number to call to get more information about the route. If you're traveling to a new area and plan to ride one of these routes you may want to call ahead of time to make sure the route or bike path still exists or has not changed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I've been lured to the athletic side!
This book is sneaky ... there I was giggling along whilethe author exposed some pretty personal stuff when I found myself jonesing for a good ride (and I haven't been on my bike in more thana year!).Dawn somehow made me look at the bright side of biking, dust off my helmet and enjoy the really great parts of biking (coasting down hills!) and get past the annoying parts that I know are good for me (trudging up hills!).She somehow takes the fear or intimidation or uncertainty out of biking and makes it accessible for averyone!A motivating, hysterical ride toward better health!Go buy it and read it - now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the Century.
Made me laugh out loud! This is a book that you can read for the dry wit that Dawn dishes out in abundance, or, you can actually read it as a beginners guide to cycling. The title is a bit misleading as I believe any beginner interested in bicycling would pick up a bunch of useful information, like butt butter, who'd a thought? From how to choose the right bike to how to fix a flat, it's all there, and more. Admittedly, Lance Armstrong may know a tiny bit more about bicycling than Dawn, but he just lacks that sense of humor that is oh so important when you find yourself wearing spandex and approaching the hill from hell.

My favorite parts of the book were Dawn's personal journal as she prepared and actually did ride a Century. Not wanting to giveaway the unusual approach to the big ride, I can only say, it was a hilarious finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Funny!
I love this book!I received it as a gift when I mentioned to a family member about needing to get more active - I think they were hoping it would motivate me, which it did, but not in the way they intended (I haven't yet even thought or attempted to think about a Century).
There was a lot of basic information in there which has helped me to hang up my car keys and pick up my helmet. Even though the title says this is a book about training for a Century ride, it also has a ton of information about any other kind of cycling you could want, whether it be riding around Europe, commuting to work, or a local pub crawl (my favorite). You should check out the book even if you aren't up for a 100-mile ride.

It was also so comforting to read about the authors struggles, which made me feel better about my own - misery loves company :)

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction to road racing....
Dawn Dais is an excellent author who offers lots of information on preparing for your first century. She covers all of the basics, including bikes and gear, training, routine maintenance, and the actual race itself. While covering all of this information can quickly become dry and boring, this is not the case with this book.Dawn Dais has a very accessible writing style that is peppered with a dry, self-deprecating sense of humor. As such, she quickly wins you over with her personality before "getting you on your butt and into gear."

If you've been thinking about buying a new bike to train on the road or are thinking about dusting off that old road racer in your garage, "The Noncyclist's Guide to the Century" is a great start and a very entertaining read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish this book was around 15 years ago!
This book is for anyone that is intimidated by bicycle riding. Yes, you rode it as a kid, but there are all those serious bicyclists who are dressed in spandex and zoom down the bicycle path. The author makes you believe that if she can do a century, then so can you.

This book tells you all you need to know to get on that bike and start riding. It may be a sport, but it is also some real cheap transportation and you get to see tons more stuff on a bike than you will ever see in a car.

The book is not just about training for a century, although you could use all the advice in the book to do one. You learn how to choose a bike, the various ways to train (outdoor and indoor), and then how to get through the actual event. You could train for a century (100 miles) or you can just train for a ride to work.

The descriptions of Dawn's rides are very entertaining. She makes you believe that riding in a century is not only rewarding and good exercise - its fun! ... Read more

Ride faster and more efficiently with Serious Cycling. Exercise scientists have unearthed a wealth of information that cyclists can use to improve their performance. However, most cyclists have never had access to this great body of knowledge.

Now you do. Serious Cycling bridges the gap between scientific observation and cycling performance. It takes the latest scientific data on physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, injury prevention and recovery, and training, and translates it into practical applications that will have an immediate impact on your personal training program. Written by one of cycling's top experts, this book will help you build endurance, increase lactate threshold, and enhance cycling strength and power.

Two-time U.S. Olympic team staff member Ed Burke has combined physiological training principles and real-world experiences to make Serious Cycling the reference that no elite cyclist should be without. The training methods and techniques he presents are what the top cyclists use. You'll learn how to

- use power meters and heart rate monitors to gauge what is happening in your body while you work out;
- prevent injuries and illness, even during periods of hard training and racing;
- use proper nutrition and cutting-edge supplementation strategies to train harder and recover more effectively;
- make your body and your bike work with—not against—each other,
- get the best, most current information on proper positioning and cycling biomechanics; and
- apply effective tactics and race strategies to ensure your success in time trials, road races, and criteriums.

Whether you're a competitor, a club member, or a weekend century rider, Serious Cycling will give you the know-how—and the means to apply it—so that you can reach your full potential.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay... but better books out there now
This give you some good basics, but you are better off buying any book for cycling that focuses on training with a power meter.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cycling books out there
i've had this book for a year now and every time i read it i get something new out of it. this book is concise and to the point. not everything in here is what people want to hear, but it is all beneficial. this book has helped me a lot and has shaped my training plan. i recommend it strongly. unlike some books that trash around and beat the bush, this book is straight up and tells you what to do, how, when, and how long. it looks at different groups of riders and has a recommendation for each and what sort of training they should be doing at a given time. however, like someone mentioned, there are no racing tactics in this book, just how to get into shape for the race/season. but if you think about it, if you train consistently and hard, you can get ahead of all the riders (early on) and call it good. yeah, you may be geting the full force of the wind and all, but with all the training in you, you should be ready. the elements are something to expect. make them your advantage. start by getting this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" book for bike racing (training, nutrition, fit, etc)
This book is packed with valuable information. This book alone is all one needs to get start a serious cycling training and racing regimen. The only thing that would be better is hiring a personal cycling coach. Even then this book would be a great augmentation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info on training for competition not on tactics.
A big question for me when buying my first book on training for racing, was "Who provides the most reliable and important information?" I have seen Dr. Burke quoted in a variety of sources including Bicycling magazine, Velo magazine, and Chris Carmichael's web site. So I had the impression he is respected in the sport. Further, when reading his writings in other sources, he has gone into the underlying physiological processes that contribute to one's performance on a bike. As such, I decided to purchase his book based on his apparent credibility and the depth of information he provides. Strengths of his book include its excellent coverage of what goes into training for competitive cycling. From beginning "base training" to sprint training, periodization, and planning one's training for the entire year. He also speaks at length on nutrition, equipment/rider aerodynamics, body positioning on the bike, and adjunct training methods. Again, there is an emphasis on underlying physiological processes including some discussion of relevant research. I would say the book's weaknesses lie with it's failure to address racing tactics. Certainly, you learn about what is happening with the body at race pace, but this book will not tell you about positioning for a sprint or pacing one's self for a time trial.
In short, buy this book if you are serious about racing and want to enhance your knowledge of what goes into training for competition. Don't buy this book if you want to learn about tactics.

5-0 out of 5 stars I won't leave home without this one !!!
Very detailed, I found "serious cycling" easy and enjoyable to read.Ideal for the self - coached athlete, it helps personalize your cycling program depending on your present abilities. While reading youfind that there is much more to training and becoming a better rider thenyou first thought, but it puts the "why" into training inaddition to the "how" giving a better understanding andappreciation with what changes your body must undergo to be a bettercyclist.

Periodization, training modes, keeping diaries and more... The nutrition section I found to be a little "old school" but, nevertheless, interesting and backed by studies. This information is aimedat the "serious cyclist" and may be too much for someone notwilling to put forth the 15+ hours a week. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Left me feeling like I'd just watched "Love Story" again.
Far better if I would have stopped with book three. The characters were developed in an interesting, entertaining, and enjoyable manner to that point.I've had enough depressing experiences in life and don't need to be reading a book that gives me another dose.Unfortunately I had already ordered the fifth book in the series. It arrived and I threw it on the shelf with no desire to read further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breaks the Mold
The sad thing about mysteries is that so many authors have made such a success by being predictable and writing the same book over and over. Despite the heat he seems to be taking, I'm glad to see that Moody has the guts to stand apart, take some chances, and push his story and characters into new territory. I loved this story and can't wait for the sequel.

1-0 out of 5 stars sorry you picked it up in the first place
This is one of those books that makes you sorry you started it.The story line and character development start out well....but then it seems the author developed writer's block and just bailed out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time
What a waste of time. The ending is completely stupid--a total abdication by the author of his responisibility to the reader to bring the story to an interesting and satisfying ending. Of course that's not surprising given the complete lack of plausible connection between the hero and the villain. There are some hints as to why the bad guy is bad, but absolutely none of the detail that makes the serial killer novel an interesting gendre. I read Derailleur and really enjoyed it--stayed up until 2am to finish--but this book is not in the same class. Of course it does leave open the possibility of a sequel where all of my concerns may be addressed....

5-0 out of 5 stars Deadroll Dead On!
I Finished Deadroll last night. The goose bumps are still there at 3pm this afternoon.Wow!Even when you've read the previous Moody mysteries and think you have a sense for how the author thinks you'll be shaking your head over this ending. The way Moody's characters evolve from one book to the next is how life works.People get older. They change careers. They get married. They have kids.Good and bad things happen...and life goes on. Mario Andretti doesn't drive race cars for a living anymore. Will Ross isn't going to ride a bike for the rest of his life. When Moody writes about something it's always something he knows. He obviously knows bike racing and a little something about TV news.Don't be surprised if there's an ant farm in the next book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is a great resource for all types of training! The information provided within will motivate you to use a heart rate monitor to track your heart zones. The result will help your performance or help you reach your goals!

5-0 out of 5 stars The heart is in it
Written by the people who walk and run the talk this book has transformed my cycling plan from going hard, going hard again then feeling unwell to now becoming more educated, healthy and faster for longer. I will see how I go at the world indoor track championships for the next 3 years in Sydney to see the fruits of this wise book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, just not that good.
This book was a fairly interesting read, although I don't think it adds much that hasn't been said elsewhere.I've read a couple books about cycling and heart rate zone based training. This is a fairly simple and decent overview. It just seems a little light compared to the rest.Still, it covers all the basics.I recommend finding it at the local library. You can get through it in a couple of days.

5-0 out of 5 stars (Heart Zones)
this is a great book.I am getting ready for an olympic tri.Great for work outs

1-0 out of 5 stars 12 step plan for cycling
I was really disappointed with this.I was looking for a book that would explain the use of heart rate zones and help me use it to improve my cycling. This is a 12 step program to zen cycling! It is overly complex and involved way too much "process."Almost every paragraph introduces a new idiosynchratic piece of jargon - microcycles, mesocycles, and macrocycles - give me a break! This book outlines an entire plan without detailing the plan! You must make a goal and write it down. You must decide whether you want to use "threshold" heart rate or maximum heart rate. You must calculate your zones. You must then periodize your training and then personalize the periodization (or maybe you personalize first and then periodize). It is simply too evangelical to be of any use unless you buy into the zen program. For someone who has a specific goal, this book may help you achieve it.If you just want to be a better cyclist, this is a waste of time. ... BICYCLING THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE A Slice of Heaven, Taste of Hell "This story runs deeper than an amazing ride down the Continental Divide of the United States. The riders take their courage and faith to new heights as they compare their struggles up 12,000 foot passes to their bedridden friend struggling with cancer for his life. Along the way, you meet John Brown while learning about his bravery. You laugh at their exploits on other world tours with stories told around a campfire. This bicycle adventure offers the best for cyclists and armchair travelers." Charles Blackmer "Ever ride a bicycle along a cliff face? Have you sweated your way up a Rocky Mountain pass? Have you rubbed shoulders with Lewis and Clark on their Corps of Discovery 1803 expedition? Did you ever meet the famous mountain man Jim Bridger? Have you set eyes on the Grand Tetons? Watched Old Faithful explode into the sky? How about water falling up? Can you imagine a natural rock bridge 103 yards long? On this ride, you'll see all these historical figures, natural wonders and much more. This is a funny, compelling ride along the Spine of the Rockies." Paul Warneke "This bicycle dream ride carries a bit of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. The author mixes hope with adventure, pain with courage and bicycling with mountains. John Brown, a friend left behind to battle cancer, provides guts and heart for his two friends who ride into the teeth of nature's fury. Along the way, you'll laugh, cry and gain new appreciations while pondering about the meaning of life. It's a great read!" Jeff Rockford ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars ...with a couple of sides of commentary
Good concept, but I found a few facets of his writing to be very distracting. Quote John Muir less, write about the cycling more. Share your political thoughts less, describe the actual sites and experiences more (like the outhouse encounter). Even if I agree with what you're saying, I picked up this book to read about cycling, not an editorial page or a Sierra Club ad.

No maps?? Not one?? I know that adding images adds cost when publishing through Author House, as was done here, but, boy, I would have accepted even a summary map in the introduction if not a map for each chapter. I'm not asking for the level of detail in an Adventure Cycling map, just something to give perspective, proximity, and orientation.

Also, this book needs an editor's eye. Although not pervasive, there are enough grammar or spelling mistakes to be distracting.

I have read several cycling accounts, and so far this book has been the least effective in its ability to put me at the author's side while riding.

5-0 out of 5 stars BICYCLING THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE: SLICE OF HEAVEN, TASTE OF HELL
Ever hear of the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race Across the Sky?Somebody dreamed it up as a prank by inviting racing maniacs to ride 100 miles in 12 hours over four 12,000 foot and one 13,000 foot pass high in the Colorado Rockies.

The author of this book participated in that race three times. It gave him an idea to ride the entire spine of the Rocky Mountains on his mountain bike.

He asked two other long-time friends to join him on the ride. That's when a painful twist entered the picture. An Australian friend named John Brown who rode coast to coast across the USA with Wooldridge in 1986 suffered a case of cancer three weeks before the ride.

While Brown stayed home with a chemo drip plugged into his veins, the two other riders started in Banff, Canada on an arduous journey down the Continental Divide to Juarez, Mexico.Wooldridge delves into the life and death world of cancer that Brown endured. Wooldridge fought his way up 12,000 foot passes while Brown fought for his life.

In 21st century America, every bicyclist knows someone who suffers from the many forms of cancer affecting millions of Americans. It takes countless lives worldwide.

How would you feel if your best friend might die from cancer? How would your world change? What if it was you?

Wooldridge spins a tale of life and death, hope and courage, fun and tears.Denis, the other friend and a Frenchman, provides humor throughout. At times, you'll laugh loudly.Other times, you might nod your head in agreement. For certain, you will gather wisdom from the road shared by long distance touring riders.

In the end, you will travel along with Lewis and Clark, the mountain man Jim Bridger, up the Road Going to the Sun in Glacier, make your way through Yellowstone National Park and the mighty Grand Tetons. You'll cross wagon tracks from the 1800s, climb rugged passes and sit beside clear mountain streams with a campfire's smoke curling into the night sky.

Wooldridge spins a bit of magic in this yarn known as two-wheeled adventure.Once you begin the ride, you can't stop.Brown doesn't give up and neither will you.Happy ending? You'll find out when you ride the Continental Divide.

Product Description

Biking from Oregon to Maine is no small feat, especially for two newly retired women who carry everything they need for three months, powered only by the strength of their legs and a desire for adventure. Alice Honeywell and Bobbi Montgomery invite readers to follow their ride by bicycle across the United States, as they face scorching sun, driving rain, buffeting winds, equipment failures, killer hills, wild fires, and even a plague of grasshoppers.
As Alice and Bobbi pedal along  their 3,600-mile journey, they test and deepen their friendship, defy their aches and pains, experience the vast and varied beauties of their country, and discover the challenges and satisfaction of a scaled-down lifestyle. And, they encounter unfailing generosity from people they meet—from the prayers of a North Dakota woman for their safekeeping, to the offer of a house in Michigan, to invitations for dinner and a place to sleep at stops all along the way. And there are incidents to laugh over, too, such as the bewildered woman who asked them, “Well, but where do you pack your dresses?”
Ride along with Alice and Bobbi as they embrace retirement with gusto and live their dream.

Both Alice and Bobbie do a great job writing about their adventure across the country. Both of them are down to earth individuals and their writing skills are excellent.Just a great book and to appreciate their ambiance on their travels

5-0 out of 5 stars The Road Less Traveled
Who hasn't fantasized about escaping the exhausting pace of modern life, of simplifying, slowing down, being untethered, doing something completely unexpected and different, of challenging and stretching oneself even if for just a little while? Having just finished reading this excellent book, I am in awe at Bobbi and Alice, two women my own age, who made this scenario a reality with a post-retirement, 3 month, 3600 mile cross country bicycle trip.I went right along with them in my imagination, swept up by the audacity of their adventure.Equal parts travelogue, introspective journal, cycle enthusiast information, and slice of life vignettes of ordinary people along a route less traveled, this book will keep you turning the pages for more.I cringed at the terrifying tunnel passage in Oregon, felt the extreme 100+ degree heat in Idaho, admired the Yogo sapphires in Montana, relished the camaraderie at the Tumbleweed Cafe in North Dakota, toured Dave's lakeside memorial garden to his beloved wife in Ohio, fought the eighteen wheelers for road space in New York, groaned at yet another mountain to scale in Maine, and shared their final triumphant glass of champagne at the 2 Cats Diner at the end of their journey. If, like me, your extreme adventures are mostly virtual and vicarious, I highly recommend picking up this book and letting Bobbi and Alice do all the work while you enjoy a very, very good read. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Oldies
If you are looking for a book that will tell you something about cyclings best than this book will do the job. The format is easy reading, comprised of short biographies of the biggest names cycling has ever produced. If like many cycling enthusiastsyour memory is limited to recent years, to say maybe the seventies or eighties on, than this book will teach you a litttle history too. It didn't all begin with Armstrong, Indurain , Lemond, Hinualt or Merckx, no, these are the giants of recent memeory; before them there were legends like Jacques Anquetil and Louison Bobet. This book goes way back to the gearless bikes and leather helmet days;it is a visually stunning bit of history. Curiously there are some ommissions that I can't quite understand. Belgian winner Lucien Buysse epic ride in 1926 of 3,570 miles that tookweeks to complete is not mentioned; it seems like he should have been in the history section as it was the longest and probably most sadistic Tour de France ever completed. Stuart O'Grady and Robbie McEwen are MIA. Since cycling is in essence a team sport their is no mention of that fact and the contributions of those riders who elevated those to the level of "The Giants." It seems as though there could have been a special section honoring the George Hincapie's of the world. These monor criticisms aside this is a fine historical document with vintage , amazing photographs. Recommended for the cycling fan, especially if they are history buffs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine overview of bike racing glory
Like all true sports fans, bike racing buffs compare today's champs to those from yesteryear as if they were all out there hammering together. This is a good thing. The photos and stories in this book show a diversity which doesn't fragment but instead links together these heroes down thru 100 years of bike racing. Any reader will enjoy becoming familiar with every rider here. I don't know of a better overview of the legends and spirit of the sport in print today.

But! Because each rider is given one spread, the bio's are necessarily ultra-compact. You may well be left wanting more, but the format is still nice.

And! The photos are compelling---how could they not be?---but they aren't the best images of these riders. True, there's no point in reprinting photos that enthusiasts have already seen. Still, the shot of Jeannie Longo and a rival after a race with all eyes closed is an example of the photo weakness.

I commend VeloPress for raising the bar in bike book publishing. They have given bike books the quality that sailing and trout fishing used to claim. Check out their portfolio set of large loose photos of vintage bike racing, all suitable for framing. Classy! ... Read more

Product Description
"This is a boy whose name is Mike. This is Mike’s pride and joy—his bike…"

So begins the inspiring tale of a boy, his best friend, and the adventurous relationship that many children begin when they are young and continue the rest their lives!

Illustrated in a retro-contemporary style, Mike and The Bike rhymes its way through Mike's choosing of his favorite toy - his bike (of course!) - and follows him off on adventures around the world and back home, where he goes to bed wearing his helmet, ready for the next day!

Mike and The Bike is the first children’s book written by Grammy Award–winning guitarist and songwriter, avid cyclist and riding partner of Lance Armstrong, Michael Ward.

Mike and the Bike came into being, appropriately enough, while Michael cycled near his home in Los Angeles.

Includes a foreword by 6-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and a 30-minute CD with music by Michael and his son, Tennessee Ward, plus a special musical narration of Mike and the Bike by the "Voice of Cycling," Phil Liggett. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Liked the book but not happy
We really enjoy reading this book and it has a good lesson to it but were terribly disappointed that there was no CDsent along with the book. The CD is what makes the book. My kids love to listen and sing along to the songs in the car. The condition of the book was NOT in "good condition". The pages are all falling out, the binder is broken and were very disappointed with the seller and this purchase.

This book is so cute - very cool illustrations and it's a very cute story, too. Both of my kids love it and my husband loves reading to them about his favorite sport!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Story, Great Illustrations, Weird Music
This story is great for any kid you want to turn in to a cycling enthusiast. It advocates wearing helmets and, to my husband's great delight, cleaning the bike at the end of the ride.
My son loves the story and the illustrations are interesting and fun. I find the music on the CD a little funky but my 3 y.o. likes it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mike and the Bike
