5-0 out of 5 stars A "BRIDGEWATER TREATISE," AND A CLASSIC OF NATURAL THEOLOGY
William Whewell (1794-1866) was an English polymath, scientist, Anglican priest, philosopher, theologian, and historian of science.

The Earl of Bridgewater (1856-1829; he was an amateur naturalist) on his deathbed commissioned eight "Bridgewater Treatises" to explore "the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in the Creation." These eight volumes appeared between 1833 to 1840, and included such works as: On the Adaptation of External Nature to the Physical Condition of Man: Principally with Reference to the Supply of His Wants and the Exercise of His Intellectual Faculties by John Kidd; Animal and Vegetable Physiology: Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, Volume 1 by Peter Mark Roget; Geology and Mineralogy Considered with Reference to Natural Theology, Volume 1 by William Buckland; and Chemistry, Meteorology, and the Function of Digestion Considered with Reference to Natural Theology by William Prout.

He begins the book by saying, "(T)he views of the creation, preservation, and government of the universe, which natural science opens to us, harmonize with our belief in a Creator, Governor, and Preserver of the world. To do this with respect to certain departments of Natural Philosophy is the object of the following pages."

Here are some other representative quotations from the book:

"When indeed we come to see the vast number, the variety, the extent, the interweaving, the reconciling of such adaptations, we shall readily allow, that all things are so moulded upon and locked into each other, connected by such subtilty and profundity of design, that we may well abandon the idle attempt to trace the order of thought in the mind of the Supreme Ordainer."
"As the eye is made for light, so light must have been made, at least among other ends, for the eye."
"If the earth had no atmosphere ... all must be inert and dead. Who constructed these three extraordinarily complex pieces of machinery, the earth with its productions, the atmosphere, the ether? ... We conceive there can be but one answer; a most wise and good God."
"The Creator of the Heavens and of the Earth, of the inorganic and of the organic world, of animals and man, of the affections and the conscience, appears inevitably to be one and the same God."
"There can be no wider interval in philosophy than the separation which must exist between the laws of mechanical force and motion, and the laws of free moral action."

Product Description
They were four exceptional soldiers, a new generation asked to save an army that had been hollowed out after Vietnam. They survived the military's brutal winnowing to reach its top echelon. They became the Army's most influential generals in the crucible of Iraq.

Collectively, their lives tell the story of the Army over the last four decades and illuminate the path it must travel to protect the nation over the next century. Theirs is a story of successes and failures, of ambitions achieved and thwarted, of the responsibilities and perils of command. The careers of this elite quartet show how the most powerful military force in the world entered a major war unprepared, and how the Army, drawing on a reservoir of talent that few thought it possessed, saved itself from crushing defeat against a ruthless, low-tech foe. In The Fourth Star, you'll follow:

•Gen. John Abizaid, one of the Army's most brilliant minds. Fluent in Arabic, he forged an unconventional path in the military to make himself an expert on the Middle East, but this unique background made him skeptical of the war he found himself leading.

•Gen. George Casey Jr., the son of the highest-ranking general to be killed in the Vietnam War. Casey had grown up in the Army and won praise for his common touch and skill as a soldier. He was determined not to repeat the mistakes of Vietnam but would take much of the blame as Iraq collapsed around him.

•Gen. Peter Chiarelli, an emotional, take-charge leader who, more than any other senior officer, felt the sting of the Army's failures in Iraq. He drove his soldiers, the chain of command, and the U.S. government to rethink the occupation plans–yet rarely achieved the results he sought.

•Gen. David Petraeus, a driven soldier-scholar. Determined to reach the Army's summit almost since the day he entered West Point, he sometimes alienated peers with his ambition and competitiveness. When he finally got his chance in Iraq, he–more than anyone–changed the Army's conception of what was possible.

Masterfully written and richly reported, The Fourth Star ranges far beyond today's battlefields, evoking the Army's tumultuous history since Vietnam through these four captivating lives and ultimately revealing a fascinating irony: In an institution that prizes obedience, the most effective warriors are often those who dare to question the prevailing orthodoxy and in doing so redefine the American way of war.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Crossroads of the Old and New Army
This review was written as a response to an inquiry by a friend and as such is brief and without any particular editing...

This is book is actually Quite good - "chatty" in some places, as it is clearly not a purely academic piece (and certainly not intended to be one), but it is certainly intellectual in both outlook and its goals. The perspective was interesting, as were the ways in which the various personae involved were cast: Casey comes across as the last of the Old Army; Abizaid as an unwitting (and unwilling?) trailblazer, but not founder of the New Army akin to John the Baptist (in comparison with Jesus); Chiarelli as the enlightened rebel who was nearly destroyed, but managed to fight his way through, though in the end at the cost of his loftier goals; and Petraeus as the truly first officer of the New Army generation, successfully pulling the Army out of its post-Vietnam delusions into the realities of the present. You also get very interesting, though not particularly surprising takes on Rumsfeld, McCain, Wolfowitz, and Powell.Generally the piece confirms many of my suspicions, but in some places the authors depict certain personae in ways I had never considered; for example surprising is the way Bush is cast as the silent leader whocomes across as level-headed and steady-handed.Rice comes across as hyper-intelligent, but sorely out of the loop and hopelessly lost in the quagmire of politics and post-Vietnam policy.

Again, though, in general the depiction of the four generals it follows roughly confirms what I had always suspected. The way the majority of the Army's Officer Corps - especially the General Officers - was depicted (rather reactionary or unwilling to hear criticism from within or below) in the years following Vietnam and leading up to 2003-2007 was unsurprising, as was the way officers following 2007 were depicted.None of what the authors say was in any way a secret, but rather they do a very good job of elucidating it in quite well written text.Chiarelli, surprisingly, comes as the most interesting character, but the narrative of his story (and for that matter the other generals) suffers at the center of the text, and rightly so as the focus shifts to those generals in the positions of most action.I was saddened to see Abizaid disappear off towards the end, but you get the impression Abizaid was an officer ahead of his time whose "time" was really in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, if not well before that.Iraq is thus (and I believe this is one of the general theses) cast as the cauldron and forge in which the modern U.S. Army has been shaped, with only the strongest in intellect and determination capable of surviving the great changes the institution undergoes - a stark change from the purely war-fighter outlook of the pre-2003/07 Army.

5-0 out of 5 stars Army Generals/Leadership
The Fourth Star is a very well researched, well written account following the lives of four Army generals through their careers and into the Iraq conflict.Although each had their unique personality and style of leadership, as well as knowledge of the Middle East, each was thrown by our civilian leadership in Washington into an untenable situation in Iraq. And each came to the conclusion that our civilian leadership hasn't a clue of how to repair a centuries old conflict.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different look at the military
The first class writing allows this book to be absorbed in a long afternoon and evening. While grouping the careers of four outstanding officers obviously called for severe editing, enough of their backgrounds are disclosed to give some understanding of them. One doesn't normally think of four star generals as middle managers, but in fact that's what these men were. The book largely deals with what they faced in Iraq at their level. Their rank in relation to responsibility may result from the overall rank inflation of the all services, but that's another issue. To put their status in imperfect civilian terms, If Bush was the CEO, Rumsfeld was an executive VP. Theater commanders such as Franks were senior VP's and these generals on the ground were like VP's running very large divisions of a multinational. What the authors have achieved is provision of insight into how these individuals dealt with the difficulty of moving a large organization toward a better solution to the problems they faced. The issues of communication, preexisting bias on the part of uppermanagement, its inability to see the actual challenges existing, the inability to get proper, competent staffing in some instances, inflexible home office staff decisions made by those who wished no risks nor attention, organizational rigid adherence to set procedures and practices along with opposition to change if considered radical or original, and so on are all challenges familiar to anyone who has held a major direct responsibility in a very large organization. Despite all of these types of issues, these men struggled on to get order in a chaotic situation. It speaks well of them as well as the army. The story is thorough, fascinating and worth the time of the general reader as well as those interested in military history and military professionals. One side issue is General Petraeus. On the positive side, he appears not to be afraid to seek out those who can give him sound advice. I first read about him in an Atlantic profile when he was a two star commander of the 101st. While I don't think it was the author's intent, the general came across to many readers of the article as something of a buffoon and a joke with his challenges to young paratroopers for push-up competition and so forth. In this book, again it may not have been the authors' design, he appears to be a very cold, calculating army politician with a bullet proof resume who never gets his hands dirty and plays the media and the Washington power structure like a banjo. Let's hope he's more than that and we all wish him success in his Afghanistan assignment. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent modern history of the U.S. Army
This book is a biography of the Iraq war's leading Generals. But more than that, in following these men's careers the book gives a very readable overview of the modern U.S. Army from the post Vietnam "hollow" Army, through the Cold War build up and the following force cuts and the Gulf War through the 90s and finally the war in Iraq. This overview gives a good perspective and background to the constraints and strengths of the Army as it faced the crucible of Iraq, and raises important questions about the future of the force. The men and women of the U.S. Army have proven that they can learn on the fly and change, that they can be a nimble, quick-thinking, situationally aware force.

It remains to be seen if the senior most Generals and policy-makers will ensure that the lessons learned stick with the force as an institution by guaranteeing real and permanent structural changes to reflect the cultural changes that have already happened, or if the hard-won wisdom of today's junior and mid-level officers and NCOs is forgotten in favor of political considerations. It is also not yet clear what the impact of nearly a decade of hard combat will be. Some have warned of the Army reaching a "breaking point" after two many individuals doing repeated combat tours.

I served two tours in Iraq, but as an enlisted soldier, my view of the war was necessarily very narrow. I enjoyed the book, as it gave me an idea of the wider picture of what was going on in Iraq.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars for The Fourth Star
Five Stars for The Fourth Star

A favorite quote from Jim Rohn is "I found that when I changed my philosophy, everything changed for me." The Fourth Star by David Cloud and Greg Jaffe is a story of the US Army in pursuit of an enduring philosophy for the conflicts of today and the potential conflicts of tomorrow.

The book is both an organizational and a personal history told from the perspective of four Army Officers who become Four Star Generals. The four officers are Gen John Abizad, Gen George Casey, Jr., Gen Peter Chiarelli and Gen David Petraeus. Each of these officers plays a key role in the wars with Iraq.

The story of these officers provides significant insights into our national security needs. In some respects, the book reminds this reader of William Manchester's The Glory and the Dream. Manchester's outstanding book is a history of the United States from 1932 to 1972. One of the best qualities of Manchester's book is the perspective offered. In other words, the book takes the following approach to the story it tells: This is what America saw at a particular point in time. America, therefore, did the following. Looking back at the results of that decision, America decided she had made a mistake. America then decided to do this to avoid repeating that mistake.

Cloud and Jaffe offer much the same approach as Manchester.

The four officers written about each entered an Army traumatized by Vietnam and trying to rebuild itself. Each entered the Army after the traumatization, so none had any responsibility for the circumstances they found on their arrival. One, however was profoundly affected by Vietnam in that his father, George Casey, Sr., was a General Officer killed in Vietnam.

The four entered an Army determined to put Vietnam behind them. Using 1973's Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur conflict as a model, the Army strove to get back to the kind of conflict it had excelled in. That kind of conflict was the potential for conflict with the Soviet Union over control of Western Europe (the kind of conflict envisioned by Tom Clancy in Red Storm Rising.)

This modernization effort results in much of the equipment used today being introduced into the Army's inventory, such as the Abrams Tank and Bradley Fighting Vehicle System. The winning of the Canadian Army Trophy competition in Tank Gunnery (with the heavy involvement of Chiarelli) signifies that technological superiority has been achieved. Rising along with the equipment is the Powell Doctrine, which states the criteria for how America is to be committed to war.

As the book describes, the First Gulf War with its victory over Iraq validates the Powell Doctrine in the same way the Canadian Army Trophy competition had validated the equipment. As the story shows, however, part of the reason the Powell Doctrine looked so good was the avoidance of trying to go to Baghdad and overthrow Saddam Hussein.

The second Gulf War put the Powell Doctrine to the test and found it wanting in the time after the Iraqi Army was defeated. The book details how little was remembered of counterinsurgency fighting in the US Army. This was largely a deliberate forgetting. As a result (according to the book), troops were not effective in this kind of battle.

The book tells the story of the efforts of these four officers to fight and win in highly unfavorable circumstances. Part of winning involved changing the Army's philosophy toward fighting while in the process of fighting. The book is highly illuminating in that respect.

Another fascinating aspect of the book is the four officers' relationship with the national civilian command authority (The President and the Secretary of Defense). This is one of the best accounts to be found describing the relationship in a long term conflict with Unified Command Structure mandated by the Goldwater-Nichols Act.

Other insights you will gain from reading this book include:

* George Bush, in his desire not to micromanage his generals, failed to properly supervise his Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld.
* The failure to provide adequate numbers of troops at the outset, as well as the desire to minimize casualties, enabled the insurgency in Iraq to take root.
* The troops who were present were not used properly to quash sectarian violence.
* The Army, despite its best efforts, still has great difficulty in accepting and rewarding innovative thinking from its lowest ranking officers.

Perhaps most noteworthy of all, reading this book will show the average American how grateful this nation should be for the professionalism, courage and dedication of the Officers described in this book and those who serve under them.

On a personal note, I should add that I was a career Army officer. I began my service before these four officers began theirs and finished while they continued to serve. I found the story told of these men and the US Army to be very much the story I lived for much of my life, which made the story that much more compelling for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Discussions on Gun Prohibition
The 13 chapters and Appendix provide concise coverage on this topic. The right to keep and bear arms is a definition of democracy (Aristotle, Cicero, Machiavelli, James Madison). English Common Law regarded keeping arms as a human right. Against that human right were most despots and their apologists (Plato, Garry Wills). America's right to keep and bear arms goes back to the 17th century. The Bill of Rights was to guarantee the rights of the people against an oppressive state. Late in the 19th century as the corporate aristocracy gained power they sought to limit people's rights. First they attacked the "well-regulated militia" from 1877 to 1919. Then they started on "the right to keep and bear arms" from 1934 onwards. The militia was composed of all male citizens was replaced with a "select militia". This battle goes on today (Chapter I).

Chapter II discusses gun ownership. Many Americans today buy firearms from China or Russia because of their high-quality and lower cost than domestic products. Table 2.4 presents statistics from a polling organization. People in rural areas need firearms for hunting and vermin control. Overall, white males formed a majority. Chapter III summarizes firearms laws. The 1986 Gun Control Act made it legal to transport guns through jurisdictions (p.20). [Has the increase of gun laws gone in step with attacks on the economic well-being of citizens?] Since 1989 in Florida most states have passed a right-to-carry law. This reverses the gun banning from the WW I era. In the 18th and early 19th century people were required to own guns as part of militia duty. Chapter IV tells how the federal and state courts have handled "the right to bear arms". Does the Bill of Rights apply to the states (p.43)? Not always. Note how the judges will create a decision to back the politicians. Chapter V has many tables of figures relating guns to crime. "Many Americans believe they are safer at home" but 4 out of 10 murders were done by a family member or acquaintances. Children are safer in school than at home (pp.63-68).

Chapter VI covers the injuries and fatalities from firearms. Suicides account for half of the mortalities, homicides almost half. More than half of the deaths occur for those aged 15 to 54, next age 55 or older. Gun ownership correlates with wealth (white males), gun wounding correlates with poverty (black males). These economics are rarely mentioned. Victims mirror the perpetrators, by race and age. [Gun deaths seem to match the latitude, more in Galveston and Memphis, fewer in Seattle (p.82).] Gun use saves lives and prevents injuries; gun ownership prevents home invasions. There is a concerted effort to attack popular gun ownership disguised as a safety measure, but they do nothing to provide "good jobs at good wages" or less oppressive taxation. Hypocrisy or politics? Chapter VII discusses "Guns and Youths" and their social environment. The authors fail to mention the quality of the high schools involved. [There were no problems in high schools before the 1968 Gun Control Law.] They note that BB guns are not toys for children.

Chapter VIII starts with an example on how concealed guns work for self-protection. It reduces violent crime against persons, but increases crimes against property. The authors quote the discredited story of Kellermann and Reay (pp.105-108). Most suicides occur at home, most murders involve family and friends; your home isn't as safe as a shopping district however counter-intuitive this seems. [Popular entertainment often serves as propaganda for a point of view.] Look at the "public health researchers" for an example (p.111). Gun buy-backs result in increased homicides (p.113)! Chapter IX tells of Public Attitudes; "gun control" is low on the list (p.117). Public opinion polls exist to provide what the buyer wants (p.119). Questions are constructed to educe answers. Those against gun permits have more real-world knowledge and experience (manual workers, farmers, etc.) than those shielded (professional and clerical). Poll results vary according to the levels of propaganda (pp.123-127). Do you know who is paying for the poll results (p.129)?

Chapters X and XI provide short speeches for and against gun prohibition ("stricter gun laws"). You can read and compare. A knowledge of classical logic can help to spot the fallacies. Did banning "Saturday Night Specials" result in more crime for "lower income people" (p.142)? Chapter XII and XIII provide short speeches for and against banning the so-called "assault weapons". Can you detect the logical fallacies? Appeal to ignorance, appeal to emotion, appeal to authority (ipse dixit), etc. are all here. Did the "assault weapon ban" lead to a lower rate of suicides and murder, and a higher rate of prosperity and general welfare? Historically, "gun control" leads to oppression of the people, and is one sign of a republic that is becoming a tyranny.
(This is from the 1997 edition.)

5-0 out of 5 stars "The United States is not a great nation by accident."
This book was published on February 5,2008 and I got it on April 7,2008. I checked the Amazon Customer Reviews right away, and found that none had been yet submitted. I thought that when I had finished reading it yesterday, that I'd be having the pleasure of being the first to review it. I was surprised when I started to write this review that one had already been posted on April 9th. The review by Richard Blake is excellent and I agree with all he has to say about this timely and outstanding analysis of the Current Affairs in America and thoughtful analysis of many things as well as suggestions and predictions for the future.
This is the author's first book and an amazingly good effort . He is not a politician and probably does not belong to any party. He discusses how the way government has changed since America was formed and how people have been short changed by over government and political parties and politicians who have more interest in their own preservation than the interests of the people they have been elected to serve.
If you wonder why a Canadian would be interested in this book, it is very simple. Our lifestyle and future is more influenced by what happens in America than what happens here. Yes, we as well as America, have a way of life that surpasses any other countries in the world. It's often been said ;"When you leave America there's no better place to go". It's a little different here in Canada. While many leave here, and go to America, the only time large groups leave America and come to Canada are times like when thoseLoyalists to England ,during the American Revolution ,who came in large numbers;or the American Draft Dodgers who streamed across the border during the Vietnam War. Another thing worth mentioning is that a lot of Americans wonder what has happened to their neighbor to the north. It seems that the great likeness we had for one another,is not what it used to be.The answer is simple. Since WWII;Canada has been steadily drifting down the road of Socialism and there are two things that stick in the craw of Socialists is Capitalism and the freedoms and successes of America. Also;many of the things that the author discusses are even worse in Canada.Furthermore, the anti-Americanism you hear from canada comes fron the Left and Socialist types who ptrdominate in our government ,academia and media ,with the government ownedand biased CBC leading the parade.
The author discusses many things that bother people and shows why things have become so frustrating.Socialism and its natural component of big government;takes everything out of the hands of the people. All one has to do is look at any country that has adopted socialism and the majority of us would not be enamoured with living there.
Whether it is the idea that nothing seems to chang when one political party replaces another, why there is so much dissatisfaction with the schools, why the media is so biased and agenda driven, why public services are so unresponsive to the people they are supposed to serve, why the law and justice systems are so ineffective and expensive, why illegal immigration seems unsolveable, and on and on;the author addresses all these things .He spells out where the problems lie and what must be done to correct them.He also give some thoughtful predictions of where America is likely to head and why.
The author shows that the success of America came from the beliefs of the founders ,and as we move away from these fundamental concepts,as we are now doing,America will continue to lose its greatness.

Those concepts are;

Freedom + Organized Religion + Capitalism + Education = Success

When any of these concepts ate missing or are reduced, success cannot be sustained. Pure and simple, just look around; The Holy Roman Empire,Communism ,Socialism,Soviet Union,;not only were these concepts forbidden or controlled by the government, but success was never attained.
The author claims to be gifted with phychic abilities and is able to carry out readings. I have never been convinced of these abilities;but if that is where the author gets inspiration;so be it. The important thing is;what he concludes seems to make a lot of sense to me;and I have come to many of the same conclusions.
I'll tell you one thing ,there are many things the author has to say that make a whole lot of sense and if you take what he has to say to heart;you and the country will be a lot better off.
Political Parties ,regardless of their stripe, breed hatred, and all one has to do is think about what political hacks and medida types are spouting during campaigns;you will come to only one conclusion;none of them are looking out for your interests.
If you have a lot of concerns about many of the directons that the country is drifting you will do yourself a great favor by getting and reading this book. Political hacks, agenda driven media and others in positions of influence should also read this book. They might not like whatthey find in it;maybe even see that the populance are wiseing up to them;and get on board to getting the country back on track.

God Bless America --"That Shining City on the Hill."

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fear of the Unknown - A Glimpse into the Future
Americans are faced with fears: fears for the economy, fears of terrorist attacks, and afraid that the people around the world will neither like us nor respect us.In "Current Events, Conservative Outcomes" G. A. Freiman discusses, interprets, and analyzes these unknown fears in light of current events with a look into the future. He draws from information he has received in the form of a visionary process, meditation and reflection, as well as through external educational opportunities.

Freiman's innate passion and love for his country is reflected in his writing. Deeply spiritual, articulate, and analytical, it is Freiman's desire to help the reader form honest opinions on politics, religion, and social issues. He deals with the issues of political correctness, terrorism, global warming, poverty, abortion, and euthanasia with clarity, awareness and candor.

I was challenged by the questions that accompanied each issue, which offered suggestions the reader could take to have an impact on the future, whether dealing with personal, political, or social issues.Freiman's predictions on American culture were of particular interest. His predictions provide insight and are worthy of consideration even for the skeptic of physic phenomena.

Although the title may isolate the readership, this is a book for liberal and conservative a like.It is a call to positive involvement and a commitment to create a better future for our children and for those after them.

"Current Events, Conservative Outcomes" is insightful, informational, and entertaining.Frieman's approach draws the reader into a personal exploration of their faith, the meaning of life, root causes, global thinking, and their relationship with God, His creation, and with all of humanity.

Product Description

September 11, 2001, will be eternally frozen in our memories. Where we were; what we thought; what we felt; what we heard; and especially what we saw will stay with us forever. It was a day -- defined for each of us in an instant -- that we will share with our children and our grandchildren in the years to come. In words and images -- and on a full-length DVD -- What We Saw captures those moments.

Dan Rather's Introduction sets the stage for an introspective look at the catastrophic events of September 11. What We Saw follows a day that started out like any other but ended in silence and sorrow -- from the first interviews by phone with eyewitnesses to a plane crashing into Tower 1 of the World Trade Center to the Towers of Light tribute, six months later.

As the world came to a halt that September morning, Dan Rather and his colleagues at CBS News worked tirelessly to provide detailed, accurate coverage of that day and the days that followed. Not only are the events that shook America's biggest city and its capital closely documented, but the tragedies that occurred elsewhere are also examined, from the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to the repercussions felt in a small New Jersey commuter town.

Among the contributors are Jules Naudet, a French filmmaker who was working on a documentary about New York City firefighters when his subjects were called into service that September morning; Newsweek's Anna Quindlen, whose thoughts turn to a young family likely headed on vacation aboard United Airlines Flight 175, The New Republic's David Grann, who captures the feeling of hopelessness felt by the families searching for missing loved ones; and CBS's Ed Bradley, who describes the volunteers who flocked to Manhattan with an overwhelming desire to help.

Each moment of September 11 and its aftermath is portrayed with candor and honesty by the CBS News correspondents, photographers, camera operators, and journalists who were there. What We Saw is an invaluable documentary of a day that changed our world forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Never Forget!
Even after 9 years it is hard to watch, the tears flow readily.Never forget.

5-0 out of 5 stars "America-it's not something you get for free;it's something you have to fight for."

"And from the ruins, that yellow cloud, made of pain and death and
religious zealotry, created by twisted minds and hardened hearts, kept
rising over the city. The stentch of it poisoned the air.Sirens wailed
their terrible song. But that sinister cloud would not prevail. The
world's God-sick party of death would not win. There on the ground,on
the day after our worst calamity, were the toughest people anywhere on
Earth. They would remove that smoke from our sky. And when it was
gone, they would work,as they always do,for life itself. They would
drink. They would sing. They would dance."

There have been many books published on the Terrorist attack on America on 9/11;and I have several. However; if one wants to have one book that covers it as well as any,I strongly recommend this book and the excellent DVD that is included with it.The DVD is a full-length account lasting approximately 90 minutes. It is one thing to read the personal accounts of those who took part in the firefighting, policing, search and rescue, volunteering and particularly those who lost friends and loved ones;but,is the only wayto hear it asnd in their own words . It is the only way to appreciate the love, heartbreak, and determination to continue with their lives.
Everyone should own a copy of this package;re-read and re-listen to it often. This declaration of war by Terrorists ,and the people who sympathize
with them, is only the early stage of a long time onslaught on Democracy,Freedom and Liberty that will continue for years. As long and terrible that this will be,the one thing that is for sure is; Good will win out over Evil-- it will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is.
The people you hear from in this book and DVD took the first big hit in this war and are all heros. Here we see Americans at their very best.
As I wrire this review,I am reminded that today is the 65th anniversity
of of that infamous day on December 7,1941 ;when another evil empire attacked Pearl Harbor. Good won over Evil and will do so again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reminder of what happened.
The text in the book is not that great, the pictures on the other hand make up for everything the text lacks. If pictures are worth 1000 words then these are the Proverbial "Encyclopedia Britanica" of Sept. 11, 2001. They find and illuminate the wide range of feelings and reactions that were brought out in the aftermath from horror to pain to fear to pride in out emergency service workers and even those who were not emergency service workers but showed up to volunteer. The DVD in my opinion is the real gem here, I have the DVDs 9/11 intended to be a documentary about a rookie fire fighter that caught the only existing footage of the first plane hitting the trade center, CNN Tribute - America Remembers - The Events of September 11th (Commemorative Edition)which is a collection of video from cnn coverage of the attacks and interviews done afterwards, and then there is the What We Saw DVD, this one is similar to the CNN DVD but does something different, it brings the loved and lost into our hearts and reminds us of the heavy price that we paid that day. Like both of the before mentioned DVDs this one brought me to tears, but there is something different about this one. It is painful to watch but its our duty to see it, because we need to be reminded so we don't let it happen again.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fine dvd and book about 9/11
while i admit the dvd included here isn't as good as the cnn one,it's still good but the book is the thing here.
the book is wonderful and when my boys ask about this i'll use this book and the other dvd's to help them understand just how big and sad that day was. everyone should have this in their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMERICANS SHOULD REMEMBER 9/11
In the months following this horrific events, Americans have proved that they can be easily controlled by fear and more than eager to give up freedoms to be free. Americans need to take a hard look of how they have allowed america to desintigrate by the hands of an illegitimate president, because Bush has garanteed america many more 9/11s by his illegal war in Iraq

wake up America before you find yourself in a dictatorship

1-0 out of 5 stars Project 2000-Big Letdown
I had expected a history of Olds, with some insight into the growth and development of the brand, and the people and decisions that once made Olds great. And then some detail on the gradual decline, and the work of John Rock to save the division at the end. What this is, is a sad tale of one man's loss of his business, and his wife. While that is certainly a bad thing, the actual book portion of this is only 39 pages, and the remainder (the appendix) is all poorly copied letters and court transcipts from Mr. Horvath's litigation.I feel badly for the man, but the book has nothing at all to do with the rise or fall of Oldsmobile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rise and Fall of Oldsmobile, or one man?
This book was a serious let-down.I'm something of an amateur Olds historian, and I was hoping to find some new, useful information in this book.Unfortunately, it was void of corporate-level content, and was instead a redundant, dull documentary of one Florida dealership.I truly feel for this man and his terrible experiences, but this is not what I was led to beleive the book was about.I couldn't even finish it, as I could not tolerate reading through whole sections of 10% new, 90% repeated information.FYI, if you want technical information about Oldsmobile and Oldsmobiles in general, [...] is a great place to start.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read,Would have been nice to see pics...Sad Story.
I brought this book here on Amazon.Com, Sad What Happen To the Author, And To His Dealer, Sad What happen To Oldsmobile. I wish the book would have had pictures of the old days of Cooper Olds in Coral Gables,Florida(Miami), Book is Okay, Filled with Lots of Legal Mumbo Jumbo, And How Maroone Screwed over said Dealer, And Basically Are A Monopoly Now.If you Plan to buy at One Of these "Auto Malls" you should consider this book, If you also want to know about A Particular experience of a Dealer, I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Project 2000: The Rise and Fall of Oldsmobile Division of General Motors
A very interesting personal story about a the life of a man whose success grew to be an OLDSMOBILE deal/manager (owner) in the Coral Gables, Florida area.

The dealings of what GM did to ultimately destroy the Oldsmobile name through this one example are shameful.

1-0 out of 5 stars The title of this book is misleading....
If you read Karl D. Spence's review of this book, he hits the nail on the head. This book is nothing about the demise of Oldsmobile but rather about a large corporation trying and successfully destroying a dealership.
It is a boring book to read, half of the book is about court documents. If you want to know more about the demise of Oldsmobile, go to the internet and do some searching. There you will find opinions and information on a very complex disposal of a great automobile company in Lansing, Michigan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Service!
The only thing I can really say is, "Great service!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date humor
I always enjoy "weird news" stories, and this book has a full year's worth, from reminders about what happened to people like Martha Stewart and Michael Jackson to obscure local items (who knew there actually was a zoo where visitors could kiss the bears?). It's also amazingly up to date, with articles about events that only happened recently (in fact, the book itself has the look of something that's been rushed into print). The writing style is the same throughout: a funny headline that comments on the story and acts as an early punchline, followed by a few sentences describing the highlights of what happened. I laughed out loud at some of those headlines, but more than that I found a lot of the bizarre-but-true items quite fascinating. When you read this book, you'll realize that 2005 really has been a strange year. ... Read more
