Mundell's conjecture in 1963 that the demand for money could depend on the exchange rate in addition to income and interest rate has received some attention in the literature by including the official exchange rate and estimating the money demand in a few developed countries. In less developed countries, since there is a black market for foreign exchange, it has been suggested that the black market exchange rate rather than the official rate should be the determinant of the demand for money in LDCs. This proposition is tested by estimating the demand for money for 25 LDCs using the bounds testing approach to cointegration. The main conclusion is that while in some LDCs, the black market rate enters into the formulation of the demand for money, in some others the official rate is the determinant. To investigate to what extent transaction mechanism matters, we examine the daily returns of 29 foreign exchange rates in the New York market. This paper finds that the day-of-the-week effect existed in the 1980s for some, not all, currencies. The fact that the day-of-the-week effect existed for only some currencies suggests that the US transaction mechanism alone cannot explain the anomaly. Furthermore, this paper finds that the day-of-the-week effect disappears for almost all currencies in the 1990s. The importance of advancing an economic rationale lies not only in changed economic circumstances but in the necessity to avoid the marginalisation of literature, and cultural policy more generally, in the EU through a combination of misguided market pragmatism and self-congratulatory aesthetic sanctimoniousness. The place of translation in the marketplace warns of the threats of clonialism. Thus, for Europe, the promotion of distinctness as a form of relatedness can function as a viable alternative to the clonialist regime of autistic self-replication.
