Product Description

Richly illustrated in full color, this volume is the first to present many of the most important Cuban paintings in the collection of The Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach—called the “best of its kind” by Miami El Herald editor Roberto Fabricio. It contains the work of 30 Cuban artists and includes an essay on each artist and painting that provides an aesthetic, historical, social, and cultural overview. Of particular interest to Cuban art aficionados are essays by art historians Gary Libby and Juan Martinez, who discuss the rise of a Cuban style, its flowering in the Republican Period from 1902 to 1959, and the convergence of forces that made Havana a center of New World modernism in the early 20th century. Gary Libby also discusses the development of photography as an instrument of commerce and art.

Product Description
This comprehensive electronic book on DVD-ROM presents a complete collection of declassified documents released by the National Security Agency (NSA) on a wide variety of topics: NSA Technical Journal Articles, Military Cryptanalysis, Cryptologic Histories, Gulf of Tonkin, U.S.S. Liberty, VENONA, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), the John F. Kennedy Assassination, the Truman Memorandum of October 1952, Cryptologic Quarterly Articles, Cryptologic Spectrum Articles, Communication Intelligence Board, Oral History Interviews, and the Soviet C-130 Shootdown, plus an index of over 4000 entries containing earlier declassified documents. In addition to the declassified documents, there is extensive coverage of the National Security Agency (NSA), with information on all aspects of the agency, including cryptology, information assurance, history, work with academia, careers, client and partner support, cryptologic heritage, doing business with the NSA, work with small business, strategic plan, values, opportunities, green commitment, Central Security Service (CSS), and public information.

The value of the contemporary coverage is enhanced by the inclusion of comparative material from 2003 and 2006.

According to the National Security Agency, they are "America's Codemakers and Codebreakers - NSA is the Nation's cryptologic organization. NSA creates decisive U.S. strategic and tactical advantage by providing otherwise denied information to U.S. decision makers while at the same time denying access to U.S. information and information systems by America's adversaries. The ability to understand the secret communications of our foreign adversaries while protecting our own communications - a capability in which the United States leads the world - gives our Nation a unique advantage. Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Information Assurance (IA) complement each other. SIGINT gives the Nation an information advantage over its adversaries. IA prevents others from gaining advantage over us. Together the two missions promote a single goal: information superiority for America and its allies. Today's complete reliance on critical information systems has fundamentally altered the Nation's requirements for information systems security. The need to protect vital information has become essential. By using the most sophisticated networked information systems in the world, U.S. leaders and military are able to gather, understand, and use information better and faster than any potential adversary. This is the information advantage that must be protected. In the past, the Information Assurance Directorate of the National Security Agency produced "black boxes," cryptographic gear that secured point-to-point communication links and paper keying material to be used with them. Simply, security equated to "confidentiality," and systems were not interconnected. But technology evolved, and so did services, as NSA moved from Communications Security (COMSEC), to Information Systems Security (INFOSEC), to Information Assurance (IA). The needs of today's world are different, and so is IA. NSA protects information today with a mix of commercial and government solutions, based on a defense-in-depth strategy - multiple roadblocks between critical systems and the adversaries who would exploit them, layers of security technologies and services within an information device, system, or infrastructure. This approach enables customers to use those security layers that are appropriate for their particular risk management profile and budgetary constraints. No longer are they forced to adopt the "one-size-fits-all" model from the past. This defense-in-depth strategy combines people, technology, and operations."

Product Description

Miami is widely considered the center of Cuban-American culture. However vital to the diasporic communities’ identity, Miami is not the only—or necessarily the most profound—site of cultural production. Looking beyond South Florida, Ricardo L. Ortíz addresses the question of Cuban-American diaspora and cultural identity by exploring the histories and self-sustaining practices of smaller communities in such U.S. cities as Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

In this wide-ranging work Ortíz argues for the authentically diasporic quality of postrevolutionary, off-island Cuban experience. Highlighting various forms of cultural expression, Cultural Erotics in Cuban America traces underrepresented communities’ responses to the threat of cultural disappearance in an overwhelming and hegemonic U.S. culture. Ortíz shows how the work of Cuban-American writers and artists challenges the heteronormativity of both home and host culture. Focusing on artists who have had an ambivalent, indirect, or nonexistent connection to Miami, he presents close readings of such novelists as Reinaldo Arenas, Roberto G. Fernández, Achy Obejas, and Cristina García, the playwright Eduardo Machado, the poet Rafael Campo, and musical performers Albita Rodríguez and Celia Cruz.

Ortíz charts the legacies of sexism and homophobia in patriarchal Cuban culture, as well as their influence on Cuban-revolutionary and Cuban-exile ideologies. Moving beyond the outdated cultural terms of the Cold War, he looks forward to envision queer futures for Cuban-American culture free from the ties to restrictive—indeed, oppressive—constructions of nation, place, language, and desire.

Ricardo L. Ortíz is associate professor of English at Georgetown University.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finalemente
Finalemente, someone else is doing the right kind of work in the right way on this topic.

For years, Chico/Chicana scholars--like Alicia Gaspar de Alba, Elvia R. Arriola, Lourdes Torres, and of course, Cherrie Moraga and the late Gloria Anzaladúa--have written circles around us about the politics of culture, place and community. These women in particular seem to be fearless in investigative gaze surrounding the politics of eros within their communities.José Esteban Muñoz's albeit seminal Disidenificaitons speaks to a "Latino" performance, or as he phrases it one of "Queers of Color".Yet, to date, it has been the closest that we have come to a genuine scholarly effort to articulate the political function governing the erotic within the Cuban American community by a Cuban American scholar until now.

Ortíz's work is scrupulous, fascinating and inventive.Rather than repeat the theoretical notions of race, place, gender and time that have come to be literary critical practice, they are merely the tools--Foucauldian, Critical Race, Gender Theories--by which he fashions a incisive path in this area of thought. Many, many scholars to come already owe this author an enormous debt of gratitude for the groundwork he has laid.
