Excerpt: Crohn's disease (also known as granulomatous, and colitis) is an inflammatory disease of the intestines that may affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to anus, causing a wide variety of symptoms. It primarily causes abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody), vomiting, or weight loss, but may also cause complications outside of the gastrointestinal tract such as skin rashes, arthritis, inflammation of the eye, tiredness, and lack of concentration. Crohn's disease is thought to be an autoimmune disease, in which the body's immune system attacks the gastrointestinal tract, causing inflammation; it is classified as a type of inflammatory bowel disease. There has been evidence of a genetic link to Crohn's disease, putting individuals with siblings afflicted with the disease at higher risk. It is understood to have a large environmental component as evidenced by the higher number of cases in western industrialized nations. Males and females are equally affected. Smokers are three times more likely to develop Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease affects between 400,000 and 600,000 people in North America. Prevalence estimates for Northern Europe have ranged from 2748 per 100,000. Crohn's disease tends to present initially in the teens and twenties, with another peak incidence in the fifties to seventies, although the disease can occur at any age. There is no known pharmaceu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=63522 ... Read more

Product Description
In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Crohn disease is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so. ... Product Description
Abstract:Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are known to have an increased propensity for thromboembolic events. Like any patient with a high risk of event recurrence, most of these patients can be managed successfully with long-term warfarin therapy. We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with Crohn’s disease who, despite careful attention to the management of her international normalized ratio, developed a new deep vein thrombosis and required inferior vena cava filter placement in addition to ongoing warfarin therapy to prevent recurrent pulmonary emboli. This report serves as a reminder to physicians to have a low threshold for diagnosing thromboembolic events in patients with IBD, even if they are presumed to be adequately anticoagulated. Known and theoretical contributing factors to this increased clotting tendency are also reviewed. ... Read more
