5-0 out of 5 stars great book for knitters, crocheters, and doll lovers!
This is a fantastic pattern book!Lots of ideas, and things to work with.Adaptable to different sizes and types of dolls. The only caveat is that on a few of the patterns you have to improvise a little, and there is little or no gauge information.I've found that I start out with a pattern, and if it doesn't look like it will fit a doll, I'll rip it out and adjust accordingly. But it's a great reference--good for all-bisques, larger bisque headed dolls, compo, etc.The whole series (vols. 1 through 3) is well worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant Crochet
I am really into crocheting with thread and this book did not disappoint or leave that "hunger" wanting. From simple to complicated. All beautiful patterns.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous but problematic
A wonderful resource of vintage patterns for crocheted openwork. As most are based on the principle of joining numerous small pieces ("motifs"), the patterns are easily adapted to other uses, such as bedspreads, curtains, et cetera. Some of the simplest motifs can even be rendered in heavy yarn, lending a "period" touch to afghans for the home.

CAVEAT EMPTOR (buyer beware): the patterns are published as they appeared in their original formats, except that several booklets are gathered together in one binding. As such, MISTAKES IN THE ORIGINALS ARE NOT CORRECTED. Experience, skill, and good old ingenuity are sometimes needed to produce the required result. Fortunately the patterns are generously photographed (although NOT of digital quality!), so this is possible.

NOT FOR A BEGINNER or those who prefer not to work at tweaking a problematic pattern. I wish I could bestow three and a half stars: three stars because of the mistakes (the editor simply selected: original texts are not actually edited, nor is any errata page offered), but four stars because of scarcity of the material, which can no longer be found elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous elegance!
This book is FULL of elegant lace tablecloths and placemats. If you are ready to dig into some thread crocheting, this book is for you.Crocheting tablecloths is a lost art, but there is nothing more elegant than a tableset for dinner with your handmade tablecloth adorning it.The instructionsare clear. There are plenty of varied projects to choose from. This bookwas given to me by a friend and it is now one of my favorites! Many of theprojects are made using motifs plus there are many filet projects. In thebook's 140 pages there are at least 160 different projects to choose from. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was disappointed with the projects in this book.It is an inexpensive way to start, but I didn't like any of the results that I got.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Connoisseur
Most of the items in this booklet are not precisely to scare. For instance, doilies are crocheted with Size 10 crochet thread resulting in a doilies that look like ones for a real house made out of rug yarn. This isan okay place to start if you are an inexperienced crocheter or don't caremuch what the results look like.I have adapted one of the bedspreadpatterns to smaller thread and it is lovely. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best of both worlds
I bought the Kindle version of this book knowing full well that the photos would not be in color. It was an experiment in simplifying. With my Kindle I don't have overflowing bookshelves and I thought that it might be convenient to have the book and patterns it contains with me along with my other reading material.

I've found that it's pretty easy to navigate through the book and read it of course. The pictures, even zoomed, are not that great...but I decided I could put up with it. I just wanted to learn Tunisian crochet.

As far as the book and the technique--I am pretty good at regular crochet and found the book is clear and the projects interesting. The author explains the steps and it may seem repetitious when she repeats the steps for each stitch but if you are skipping from one to the other stitch in the learning process this actually helps keep from flipping back and forth...oh wait, no pages with the Kindle.

Today I realized that with Kindle for iPhone I can have the color pictures, too! They enlarge really well to show stitch detail in luscious color.

So that makes it the best of both worlds when purchasing a book of this type for Kindle. Although I don't really like reading regular books on the iPhone, it's great for this use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tunisian Crochet
Great book. shipping was fantastic. lots of instruction and photos. very helpful if you are new to this form of crocheting

2-0 out of 5 stars There is no substitute for the look and feel of knitting
Any book that pretends to have the look of knitting from crochet is bogus by definition.
Crochet is thick and does not drape. It uses a minimum of 1/3 more yarn depending on stitch choice.

Tunisian crochet is even thicker than ordinary crochet and makes a stiff, unflattering fabric when finished.

It is a neat technique that has been around forever. It makes a thick and very regular rectilinear fabric. The classic application used to be afghans based on all black or all white yarn squares which one later embroidered with cross stitch flowers to decorate.

It remains unsuited to making garments no matter how lovely the book or its instructions are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book-you need great tools!
LOVE this book and the stitches! For those having problems finding proper tools, hooks, etc., please look for Symfonie wood interchangeable afghan/tunisian crochet hooks which are available only in Europe but available to us via a lady who sells on Ebay... and the shipping is superfast!I also have the plastic variety... but these wooden hooks have made my work so much more accurate. Now, we just need more patterns!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done
I take issue with the author's assertion that Tunisian crochet has "the look of knitting - with the ease of crochet".First off, it doesn't look like knitting; at least not to a knitter.Second, if you truly want the look of knitting, knit whatever it is you are making. And lastly, "ease" comes with practice; I find my knitting as easy as crocheting because I have chosen to practice.I do not understand why crocheting constantly has to prove its worth alongside knitting or be compared to it.They are two separate techniques, and I consider Tunisian to be yet a third, in spite of its obvious closeness to crochet.Having gotten that off my chest, let's continue with the review.

I really like this book. The pictures and instructions are clear and concise. The photographs of each project include a front and back shot, along with closeups of the pattern stitches.Too many books focus on having wildly modern styling, as if they long for their projects to be in the pages of Vogue magazine.I am exceedingly grateful to the author for bypassing this in favor of showing us the actual projects in such a way as to showcase THEM as opposed to the photography.Thank you. Also there is a wonderful appendix giving information on sizing, industry standard measurements, yarn sizes, and resources. It's short, but contains a true wealth of information sadly lacking in many similar volumes.

The projects themselves are made in lovely yarns and are well blocked and presented."Chain Main Scarf" - rated easy, in Tunisian purl stitch.Simple, yet lovely, worked in two fine yarns."Wild and Wooly Wrap" - an easy shawl in a chunky yarn, in Tunisian simple stitch.I liked the look of this, and I think most would like it, although I am not a fan of chunky garments. "Honeycomb skirt" - intermediate in Tunisian honeycomb stitch. The yarn and stitch used here create a lovely and interesting texture."Shimmer shawl" - an intermediate wrap in various lace stitches.I thought this absolutely gorgeous and plan on making it when I can track down the yarns."Ivory Shell" - an experienced level sleeveless garment with a v neck, in staggered X-stitch.There is some intricate shaping here and it is not for the beginner or the faint of heart; I made this in the recommended yarn - Lion organic cotton - and it was beautiful and well fitting; and the pattern easily followed and correct.

The next garment in the book "Ladders and lattice duster" (experienced level) gives me pause. It looks great in the photos except for the sleeves, which are constructed in single crochet and chain loops.Perhaps it was simply easier to do this than pattern Tunisian sleeves to go with the body, but I think it made the overall effect a bit sloppy. If I make this, I will definitely change the sleeves."Felted clutch" - intermediate - is the Tunisian version of every other simple felted bag going around.I confess I am addicted to felting right now, and tried this to see if it were any easier than a knitted or crocheted bag.The nature of basic Tunisian stitch is to be a strong, tight fabric, and I did find the resultant bag felted very well, quickly, and retained an interesting texture. Some experimentation could produce some fascinating felted fabric textures.

"Warmhearted vest" - intermediate skill in Tunisian knit stitch. It is good looking; but here again is my issue -- it would look better and have ease and stretch if truly knitted. It would also work up tremendously faster.I am curious if non-knitters actually find this worth making? My discomfort with the Tunisian knit stitch carries over for the next garments, "Hugalicious jumper" intermediate for children, and "big sister sweater" intermediate in Tunisian net stitch. All three of these garments seem to rely on asking one thing to be another, and this isn't knitting, nor does it look like it.The garments look sloppy and second best to me.

Then the book moves into home decor. Two pillows, both functional and pretty, two afghans, an ottoman cover (huh?) and place mats."Sweet dreams baby blanket" is my favorite piece in the book. It's exceptionally lovely, in two alternating patterns, and while it takes some time to work up it is well worth the investment.Truly beautiful.

The book works great on many levels, but for me falters when it gets into the whole Tunisian (wanna be) knit stitch. When the author sticks to explaining and exploiting the many wonderful Tunisian stitches and fabrics that can be created with these variants, it's excellent. It doesn't have to look like knitting. It can simply be wonderful and beautiful, and Tunisian.Definitely among the better books available on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super updated version of a "golden oldie"
This is a great update to a book that has been around for quite a few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Crochet Book for All
I agree with the previous reviews. It is very informational for right and left handed crocheters. The photos are very clear and so are the instructions. This book is great for beginners and those who have crocheted before and just need some reminders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Lefties!
I tried for years to learn to crochet and couldn't find anyone to teach me as I am left-handed. This book has detailed instructions, with photos(not drawings), of all the stitches, with the left-handed version on the opposite page of the right-handed one. Using it, I was able to teach myself all the basic stitches, and I have gone on to make many projects, including an afghan, baby items, and hats for charity!
This is actually my 2nd copy of the book--I gave the 1st to my left-handed daughter!
I highly recommend "I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting" to anyone interested in learning this skill--left-or right-handed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for new crocheters!
I bought this book after getting frustrated trying to learn how to crochet from the black and white drawings found in other crochet books/pamphlets. I found the instructions and photos extremely easy to follow, and also liked that the book has supplementary information on hook sizes, yarn types, decreasing and increasing stitches, and felting crocheted items. The book does seem to be geared towards younger (teens and early 20's) people, but I didn't find that it detracted from the book. As far as patterns go, I thought they were just OK - nothing special, although there is a pattern for a round felted bag that I thought would be really cute to make for my daughter. Overall, I was very pleased with the book, and feel that it is worth buying just for the crochet instructions alone. I also highly recommend the Leisure Arts I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning tool
I wish I had this book available when I began teaching crocheting 30 years ago. What a wonderfully, easy-to-use and understand book.Lots of great illustrations show the reader exactly what is being explained.I always said if I could "send my hands home" with my students, no one would every say they couldn't crochet. The photos show a hand holding the hook and yarn so there is no way to misunderstand what is being read. With almost 50 pages of explanations of how-to's, anyone will be an expert by the time they get to the patterns.

Beginning with the slip knot right on through to treble crochet, each stitch is shown in great detail.AND, it is shown for both right and left handed people!Once your get through the basics, the patterns range from very simple - as making a dish cloth - to more intricate - as making a vest. There are scarves, afghans, a Koala bear and a purse to make as well.A little something for everyone is given in this book.

A page of yarn information is provided as well as an Index just in case you forget how to create a half double crochet.Just go to the Index, look up what you want and go right to that page.No hunting around in the book to find it.Simple!

Now no one has an excuse for not learning to crochet. With this book, a hook, some yarn and a little time, you will be creating wonderful gifts to everyone. You may even not want to part with them but keep them for yourself! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Basic Crocheting
I recently purchased this book having been a big fan of the prior one, Basic Crocheting. If you are looking for a book to take you beyond the basics to a more intermediate level, Beyond Basic Crocheting is the book for you.I really like the layout of this book. The instructions are very well written making them easy to follow and what I absolutely love is that this book is loaded with many easy to follow enlarged pictures that make creating these beautiful and usable projects fool proof. I need all the help I can get and this book gives me the confidence and necessary tools to grow in this craft, which I love. The felted handbag, Motif Cardigan and Beaded Wrap are my favorites so far.I am looking forward to trying the Tunisian Crochet Scarf and Sassy Socks.

With the holidays just around the corner I decided to purchase several more as gifts for my friends, knowing that they will enjoy this book as much as I do.If you are looking to be challenged beyond the basics you will not be disappointed with this purchase.I can't wait to see what the next book in this series will feature...that is I hope there is a next book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great crochet projects
This book has great crochet projects. They're interesting and fun, but not overly complex.I can't wait to dress my daughter in the jumper. It's lovely! The beaded wrap, lacy wire necklace and felted handbag will be great for the holiday season.I've never tried Tunisian crochet before, but it's really cool and it looks like knitting.Overall great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent tutorials
I plan on making all 8 projects and have started with the toy bunny. There's a lovely beaded wrap, socks, little girl's jumper, diagonal pillow, Tunisian crochet scarf, lacy wire necklace, felted handbag and motif cardigan. All the patternshave close-up full color photos next to theinstructions whichare thoroughly written out (no schematics or symbols though). The cardi has 3 sizes 42-48"finished.This one shows how to connect the motifs while working them. The felted handbag shows how to felt it with pictures of the washing machine. The jumper shows doing ripple stitch pattern. The socks show doing an afterthought heel. The diagonal pillow shows this stitch close-up plus also lots of photos doing the reverse single crochet or crab stitch. There are tips throughout the book and even for the experienced crocheter, this book is definitely worth the price. Contributors in addition to the author are Annie Modesitt and Kristin Omdahl. I love thespiral binding which makes using the book so much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expanding Crocheting Skills
With this book, you have the instructions you need for tackling more detailed and complex (but not difficult) crochet projects. The materials and tools section is a big help as are the excellent photos and illustrations in the "skill workshop" that follows each project. I especially like the sections on working with wire and on Tunisian crochet. This is the perfect folow-up to Ms. Silverman's book, "Basic Crocheting."

2-0 out of 5 stars Try to obtain from a library first
Our library system had this book and so I got it for a once-over.Well, since it was written in the 70's, I knew there was a big chance that it could have some 'interesting' patterns. The book did not disappoint.

I gathered my teen children around and we had a pretty good laugh at the patterns (and hairstyles and clothing that was not crocheted).I'm afraid it went back to the library rather quickly.I saw nothing I could actually make and wear in public or display in my home OR give as gifts.

The author was a victim of the style of that time so I am giving the book 2 stars instead of one.I remember, all too well, wearing red, white and blue vertical striped bell bottoms with the word 'VOTE' emblazoned down the side, set off with a lovely 2" wide white belt.Ugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Margaret Hubert showpiece
This book is written by the very talented Margaret Hubert and is a great favorite of mine. If you only have a small amount of time to crochet or if you want something quick to crochet, this book is for you. M's Hubert's instructions are (as always) clear and concise. The projects shown are something you will want to make the time to crochet. I recommend this book (and all of M's Hubert's other books) highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a lot to it.
I picked up a couple of tips (and I got the book used at a very low price, so I can't complain) but there's just not that much in here. The chapter on machine knitting has a couple of very basic obvious tips. There are some tidbits, but I sure wouldn't pay more than I did for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the most useful knitting book around...
Do you know how to tell the difference between synthetic and natural fibers?Burn the tip of the yarn, and watch how it melts.Do you know how to take the itch out of a wool sweater?Rinse it in the washer with hair conditioner (it works!).Do you know how to save a ton of money on yarn?Go to the local charity shop and unravel a few sweaters. All these tips and tricks I got from this one little book, which is worth it's weight in gold.Of all the knitting books I owned, this one saved me the most time and money. It also includes a pattern for no-slip baby socks, diagrams and drawings of unusual knitting equipment, and all sorts of techniques and methods for blocking, stretching, and mending.Buy it already, you knitting nut!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Instructions
I'm a kinetic learner, so many books of instructions leave me more puzzled than informed. This one's an exception--the excellent line drawings illustrate techniques so that even I get it.

Lots of great ideas in here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Tip Book - Worth Having On Your Reference Shelf
I borrowed this book from the library to see if it was "worth" buying for myself. After I found myself referring to it constantly and renewing it for an additional 30 days, I realized it was a "keeper."Although I don't do machine knitting, the tips for handknitters are many and diverse. The illustrations are clear and relevant. Most importantly, i found tips here that i had never seen before in other sources. All in all, a valuable and worthwhile purchase. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This reprint is a great introduction to knitting and crochet for children. The patterns are suitable for children to make for their dolls, and teach skills easily applicable to larger, more complicated projects.

I enjoy reading old books, and this is a lovely one.I highly recommend it for kids who are interested in learning knitting and/or crochet, or who have expressed an interest in "olden times."

Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book
I love the Mary Frances' books and this one is just as delightful as the other two (one on sewing and one on cooking). The books start out as a story about a little girl whose needles and yarn come alive (a note:I don't see a shred of racism in the book like another reviewer suggested - the yarn is dark-colored and is called mammy, is that a bad thing? She is an adorable ball of yarn, and very helpful to Mary Frances, who adores her).

The needles and yarn teach the young girl, Mary Frances, how to crochet first, then knit. Illustrated drawings and photographs are sprinkled throughout the book. The instructions and illustrations are so clear that I am able to use this book with my young eight-year-old daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Knit with the help of your needles!
This charming book from the past is helpful to the young girl learning to knit and crochet, and historically interesting.Projects are small and quick, with easy-to-follow instructions.I wish the typeface had been updated, but I suppose it would have lost some of the old-fashioned feel of the time in which it was written. My 12 year old daughter, who has trouble following instructions, found the story format helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Racist, and not so good on the knitting, either
While the concept of this book is charming- the wool, needles and hooks come alive to teach little Mary Frances to knit and crochet- the reality is less charming. The knitting and crocheting instruction is basic and there are many other books out there that are more useful. The book, written in the early part of the last century, is flawed by racist content.Instructions for making a yarn baby and a "Mammy" doll are fairly offensive.I would hesitate to use it in any setting that involved children, unless you need a jumping off point for a discussion about racisim. If it's knitting for children you are after, than I suggest one of the many other fine books that have been written to meet this need. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
This book inspires the reader to get out there and profit doing something that they love.It is up to the reader to act on the suggestions in the book, if they so choose. It's a decent reference book, with details on how to get your business started, how to be successful, and where to market your projects.I would recommend it to someone who is thinking about starting their own crochet business, but I would not suggest using this as a sole reference, as there are many other books out there that can be used in conjunction with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't do without this book...
... If you want to start a business in crochet.I was thinking about it in the back of my mind but now that I've read this book I feel like I have all the info. I need to go for it!

I found this book at my local library and after reading half of the "for profit" section I had to look it up on Amazon to see if I could find it!I needed to have a copy of my own.If you're on the fense buy it - you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very encouraging
After reading this book I feel prepared to start turning my crochet fun into crochet profit. It has made a crochet cottage industry seem in reach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must if you want to start a Crochet Career!
Although I am lucky enough to have met Darla Sims in person, this book is still a well loved and well worn "bible" for my Crochet Publishing business!Everything you need to know to get started in any part of the industry is here in this book.

From learning to crochet to contacting publisher, from starting your business to creating the end product, this easy to follow guide will help you make a success of your endevors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Profitable for all Crocheters
I teach crochet and am always on the lookout for ways to earn money doing what I love.Darla Sims' Crocheting for Fun & Profit gives clear, concise, and concrete information on how to turn your crochet into cash. The book is divided into two parts; Fun, and Profit.I admit that I readPart Two first.I found Sims' profiles of teachers, craftswomen, designers, editors, and writers informative and inspiring. The chapters onmarketing and the basics of running a crafts-business should help thewould-be entrepeneur avoid some common pitfalls of starting a smallbusiness. She covers how to collect on bad checks, accepting credit cards, taxes and more.Crochet is definitely not the way to riches, but byfollowing Sims realistic advice you can supplement your income doingsomething you love. And who knows, if you're extremely enterprising youmay actually be able to earn a living at it.

Beginners will find clearexplanations of the basics in Part One.While Sims' doesn't devote anyvisuals to left-handers, she instructs lefties to trace the illustrationsand then turn them over, creating a mirror image.A nifty, if timeconsuming suggestion.More experienced crocheters will find the section ondesigning your own projects invaluable as few books cover this subject. She also provides a handy chart on how to read those mysteriousgarment-care symbols that we see on laundering instructions. And there's aformula for converting ounces to grams and back again.

This book has aplace in any serious crocheter's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crocheting with Anne Orr (Dover Needlework)
A nice book for the beginning crocheter. I would have liked to have seen a few more shawl patterns, maybe something a little fancier.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
I ordered this book in the hopes that published patterns (as opposed to those patterns posted by random people on the internet) would be more accurate and less mistake-ridden. However, I was disappointed. Both patterns I have tried so far from this book have had multiple mistakes in them. Some of these mistakes were immediately obvious to me and fairly easy to correct while others were harder to spot and resulted in wasted stitches and wasted time.On a more positive note, this book has photographs for all the patterns and it is sometimes possible to recreate the pattern relying solely on the pictures. On the whole, I was expecting much more from Anne Orr, a highly esteemed chrochet artist with an impressive reputation.I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely old crochet designs.
Crocheting With Anne Orr is a Dover publications reprint. The patterns were first published between 1932 and 1948.The book contains lovely thread designs for bedspreads, tablecloths, collars, edgings, doilies, andother accessories.Crocheters at all skill levels can enjoy this book. Designs include a very simple design "Lacy Doily" to a veryelaborate design "Irish Rose Bedspread".The patterns are oldbut can easily be used in our home decorating today. The patterns foredgings with fringes and tassels are very popular now and quite expensiveto purchase ready made. ...
