4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
The book is chock full of useful information. Some is common sense, some not so common. However, it contains little about dealing with the Internet and communicating by email about credit. Moreover, as a man, I didn't appreciate the book's strong tilt toward women. Throughout, the author uses female pronouns and in places villainizes men. No advice for a man whose ex-wife has cleaned him out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Credit Handbook
We used the information outlined in this book and it worked great. We had an old credit issue that dogged us for years. With this credit advise, we were able to deal effectively with AmEx and get incorrect charge-offs against our credit removed. This information is powerful and valuable. We recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is extremely well written!
This book truely answered all of my questions about credit and then went into suggestions that I could understand and implement. My credit is now perfect with a credit score of over 750.You will learn that scores over 700 are considered "A" credit. You will also see the importance of paying off high interest debt first. It sounds so simple but many people, like myself, were paying more on our mortgage while still carrying a credit card balance. This book has changed my family into knowledgable consumers. We are now debt free and I would strongly recommend it to anyone- and no, I don't know the author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
It is all about common sense. Does not really help those with poor credit scores. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cautionary without Condescending
A great primer for students on credit, debt, and cash. Mr. Pratt is cautionary without being condescending. While the target audience for this book is college freshmen, it would also be absolutely relevant for high school students in a life-skills course or similar. There are clearly many more details that Mr. Pratt could have gone into, but this gives a crash course in many of the basics of credit cards; the book would be a great conversation starter about these money issues in a first-year seminar course. I finished the book in about 45 minutes (interrupted, on the bus), so it would be a quick read for even the busiest high school or college student. The review questions at the end of each chapter could be used as a pre-test if the book was used over a period of time within a course, but also could be used as basic writing prompts. While my parents did a great job with my financial education, this would have been a beneficial resource during my first year in college. If I were teaching an introduction to university life course, I would definitely consider requiring my students to read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Reference for Consumer Bankruptcy Debtors and Debtors Generally
I gave this book a lot of points for its very existence. There are a LOT of lawyers who were involved in its creation, and getting a lot of lawyers to cooperate in anything is like herding cats.

The author is listed as the American Bar Association, but there was one primary author, David L. Hudson, Jr.

David did a great job of packing information densely into this small paperback book. The book is broken into two major categories, consumer credit and bankruptcy.

The section on consumer credit discusses credit discrimination, applying for various sorts of credit, correcting billing mistakes, and other sorts of of borrowing, including car and home financing.

The section on bankruptcy discusses both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcy, with a discussion of the ways that bankruptcy is now different under the 2005 amendments.

There are a lot of features to make this easier to use, including a number of icons (little picture thingies) that direct the reader to practical tips, additional information, warnings about pitfalls, and plain English definitions of legal terms (which are particularly important in the area of bankruptcy law, where words look and sound like English, but aren't!).

One feature I particularly like shows up at the end of chapters, and it's the section called "The World at Your Fingertips".That section directs readers to additional materials to flesh out the discussion in the book.

And that's good, because this book is a sort of a resource for credit and bankruptcy swiss army knife. It has a LOT of items, and they're all good, just like the tiny tools on a good swiss army knife. But after you read the relevant Chapter in this book, you'll probably want to read more, in a more specialized volume.

For instance, if you read this and decide that a Chapter 13 is in your future, you may decide to read The Complete Chapter 13 Personal Bankruptcy Guide by Edward Haman (a NOLO book), or if you read this book and decide that you are contemplating a bankruptcy under Chapter 7, you may want to read Surviving Personal Bankruptcy by Nora Raum, both of which are available here on Amazon.

And to track down a bankruptcy lawyer, there's a new online resource called AVVO which compares lawyers like Amazon compares books, and there's Findlaw (an online directory), and it would also be nice if your lawyer was Martindale AV rated.

p.s. as I write this postscript, there is a raging debate in Congress over a provision in the Bankruptcy Code that may, after amendment, permit the stripdown of some OR all mortgages on residential real property. Will that statute pass? Listen, I've practiced bankruptcy law in Phoenix, Arizona for about thirty years, and I've watched a long series of amendments to the "New Code" of 1979; and I've watched as Congress debated in the past. The 2005 amendments took about a decade to work their way through Congress. So MAYBE the Bankruptcy Code is about to change a lot. And MAYBE it's not. But if you're contemplating bankruptcy in Phoenix, Arizona, or anywhere else, you should be aware that the law is currently MAYBE about to change in a way that could be helpful to debtors, IF they qualify and are willing to put up with a Chapter 13 bankruptcy (which makes a root canal look like fun).

5-0 out of 5 stars good concise resource on credit issues
This is a succinct summary of a variety of credit related topics. It is easy to understand and suitable for a general overview of the topic.Written by the American Bar Association, an authoritative source. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a real boost!
I so much appreciated having this book basically land in my lap. One of the things that I appreciate the most is that although I am not a typical reader (not dealing with high interest debt or inability to budget) I was still very moved by the book. Even someone as self-motivated as me can use a boost. And a boost it was! I am still referring back to the book and its wonderful general mix of cajoling and support - a good quick reality check with lots of practical help along the way. I understand firsthand how changing your attitude changes everything, but it is always to get that reinforced.

So: this e-book is a tremendous boost to anyone who needs to get real about their finances. A mixture of warm, practical advice, helpful attitude-changing exercises, and honest evaluation techniques, it will get you up and moving.

The financial concepts are sound, and if followed, will get you the results you want. It's as if it says, "You can do it!" in a different way in every chapter. If you are feeling stuck, discouraged and don't know where to start getting a handle on your debt/finances, start here. Even if you have a good handle on your debt and finances, this e-book serves as a good reminder and reality check. I read it and immediately dealt with a credit card I had forgotten about, and then went on to do a budget (which I hadn't done in years), and looked over all my spending habits. We can all use this e-book and I highly recommend it (and for the price, can you beat it?)

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I should have done more research on the author but apparently he'd had his business (helping consumers settle credit card debt) shut down by the Feds.Much of the book is his justifying himself so it was pretty worthless. I would NOT recommend this book! "Settle Your Debts" by Norman Perlmutter was much more helpful.

1-0 out of 5 stars None of these reviews actually are helpful!
I'm really surprised that there aren't any actual reviews of whether this books helped someone eliminate their debt. Gee, one review is from the author who quotes himself from his book... the other 2 reviews simply state that the book has some information in it but their is NO personal testimonial of someone who actually had debt and used this book to eliminate... that this book teaches the strategy in talking to credit card companies, etc...

I found the author's videos online when i was searching for the many "debt relief companies" that advertise on Air America Radio.

I was looking for comments on whether these companies work and which one i should recommend if any and i found Harvey Warren's 20 or more supposed educational videos.

All the videos say the same thing: go to his website and buy the book. i'd really like to know if these techniques work! There are so many of these books out there and Amazon.com is such a great way to find out which books are actually good.

I'm suspicious that no one real has reviewed this book. Seems like the 2 reviews that are not the author may have been sent by the author to post a "review".

Love to hear some real experience with this system he proposes.

This book crept to the heart of credit card debt straight away - the fact that most of us don't want to even know how much our debt is, or admit to ourselves that we've gotten into this mess in the first place.Debt is intensely personal.

Harvey Warren lays out the groundwork by showing us how the credit card companies work, how they set us up by luring us in with promotional awards, and give us more credit than we need.He does an excellent job in advising the consumer of the options and programs that are out there, what to do about the crushing shame that comes with overwhelming credit problems, and how to start to get out of the debt hole. This was a very informative book, and I highly recommend it to anyone struggling with overwelming credit card debt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and Reassuring
This is an excerpt from the Introduction that I hope will help you better understand how important this book is to you if your sincerely want to avoid bankrupty... and foreclosure.

"Although personal responsibility is the fundamental first step in getting your financial house in order, I have always firmly believed that the credit card issuers have played a major role - and some suggest a dark role - in creating the current consumer debt crisis in America.I met with hundreds of good people who took responsibility for their debt and looked their financial disaster in the eye.All of them soon realized that the blame did not belong to them alone. They demonstrated to me that consumers in debt trouble are ready, willing, and able to rethink, reject, and release the habits and misconceptions they had about credit, avoid bankruptcy, and start building a durable financial future. This book has been written to help you take responsibility, just as they did; to support your desire to spare yourself the personal anguish and long-term financial consequences of bankruptcy; and to give you the skills you need to never again to be in anyone's debt."

The trick to getting out of debt is doing something, but first you need to know what to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Insight on "How to Get Out of Credit Card Debt"

Each of the chapters - including those on credit counseling, debt settlement, bankruptcy, what happens to your credit rating - can be read and used one at time enabling the reader to focus on topics of immediate interest. The budget chapter, which recognizes there is no single "right choice" only the choice right for you, provides the tools needed to create the personalized foundation necessary to becoming debt free. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great information for everyone!!!
This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.

This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.

I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future.I loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greal Deal and Great ideas
By using this book, I learned how to save money and also saved my house from going into foreclosure. I took the advice and used the extra money and saved my house.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Ideas That Will Help Anyone Save Money
This is a solid, little book full of useful ideas and different ways to save money. This book is short but that doesn't mean it lacks substance. To me this book was perfect for the quick ideas that can get me moving in the right direction. With some ideas I needed to do more research but with others it was just enough information to motivate me to do the right thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Saving Money!
This book features a long list of money saving tips that anyone can use. Some of them are more obvious in nature (like clipping coupons or buying on clearance) but there are others I had not really thought about. If you take many of these tips and mesh them together, you can really affect your bottom line. In this economy, it's important to save money where you can! This book is for people who really want a list of ideas rather than an in depth look at budgeting or anything of that nature. But if you are looking for ways to save money, this book will be a handy tool for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy being thrifty, then this is for you!
Just got finished reading this book and I really enjoyed it.

You're not going to find hundreds of pages of boring material. The author has really summed up 92 great ways to make your money go as far as it can and he doesn't present you with a bunch of filler material. It's quick and to the point. However, I wouldn't necessarily say that this book is about saving money... it's more about how to get MORE for your money, which is fine with me! I always enjoy a good bargain.

Some people call this being cheap, but I call it being thrifty!

If you're looking for numerous ways to stretch your dollar, then this is a great book to read through. Especially during a recession!

Overall, this book gets 5 stars for being an easy read, and showing me a LOT of new ways to spend wisely. ... Read more
