5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of cute crafts!
I love this exciting new book from Quirk books called: Witch Craft: Wicked Accessories, Creepy-Cute Toys, Magical Treats, and More! The book is authored by Margaret McGuire and Alicia Kachmar. It takes crafters and bloggers from all over and puts them into one place for you to see their inventive creations. There are many crafts in this book; from authors as well as Etsy shop owners, and other experts. It is such a treat to be able to not only see the adorable creations they made, but in this book, they even teach you how to make them yourself! In Quirk's fun style, they also have little Halloween illustrations throughout the book, which make it extra visually entertaining.

They have a wonderful selection of crafting ideas from adorable Halloween Mary Jane shoes to poison apple plushies. There is also a vampire bite necklace for all you Twi lovers; as well as decorations and food fun!Projects range from the uber simple (tangerine jack o'lanterns) to the more advanced (the cutest little crocheted witch you've ever seen!). There are fun bios about each crafter at the end of the book.If you want to make your Halloween extra special, this book is a great way to help you do so.Your children and guests will always remember those extra special touches you put into the holidays that show how much you care about them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Holiday projects for great family fun

I know it's crazy to buy a book for a single pattern, but that's what I did: when I saw the adorable felted Dracula Candy Bowl I simply had to have it. I'm happy to say that this little book is full of creative, easy family projects all oriented toward Halloween.

Having a Halloween party? once you've seen the PB & J skull sandwiches and the cupcake graveyard, your menu will take shape. Need to embellish yourself or somebody else for trick-or-treating? the tulle and lace tutu is too cute for words, and so are the creative jewelry projects, especially the vampire bite necklace and spider earrings. And oh, the ruby slippers! a pair of dressy shoes, spray glue and red glitter...it's a fashion statement every woman should make at least once in her life.

The book is well laid out and the projects use readily available materials and ingredients. Most require adult skills or at least supervision, but you can truly turn the kids loose on a few of them.

My only negative comment about "Witch Craft" is that the typeface is very small, and some hints and tips are in a positively minuscule font or set against a colored background. For many of the projects the directions are fairly general so it's OK, but I'm going to have to copy and enlarge the line-by-line knitting directions for the Dracula bowl. Not an insurmountable problem, but worth noting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great craftts for the spookiest of days!
This book was a real treat! The trick is making all those amazing and creative ideas before Halloween arrives. It will make a great coffee table book, discussion piece, and you can also make the stuff that is featured inside it.I plan on taking this book upstate during our fall foliage trips so that I have something fun and creative to do with my kids.I especially loved the Dracula Bowl, what a cutie! The felting looked professional, and I can only assume that whomever did the felting on that bowl must have a delicate touch. The young lady who wrote the pattern, Flossie Arend should have an Etsy store opening soon, and I can't wait to buy her headbands and other knitwear she'll be offering.Better get back to my muffins.Toodles!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb book for the Spooky Folks who LOVE HALLOWEEN!!!
An excellent book that is giving us a jump start on celebrating the best holiday in style while having fun.My daughter and I are enjoying the gorgeous illustrations and whimsical designs. I WANT THOSE RED SHOES ON THE COVER!!!!!!!!!! Buy this book...it's a great family bonding book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars so many fun ideas
I recently came across this book and am amazed!!So many ideas for all kinds of scrap stuff and so many different skill levels. All the different craft tips online, or the tv shows, or magazines are nothing compared to what's in this book. sheer genius and creativity! Not only is this great for activities in school or seniors, it's also a fun way to recycle, and can help you "make do" in a pinch.Just the very next day after i read this, i was thirsty, but without a water bottle... thanks to Ms. Hershoff, i knew how to make a cup from a piece of paper and was saved!

5-0 out of 5 stars The wonderful Evelyn
I was lucky enough to live next door to the wonderful Evelyn Hershoff in our building on Avenue R in Brooklyn.Evelyn was a school teacher and had a fabulous sense of humor and was extremely creative. She gave my mother this book for me for my first birthday in 1956, and I have it to this day.
There is a world of fun in this book, and everything used in the projects can be found in your home.
This book has kept me very busy as a child, entertained my son, and I now use it in my early childhood class.
This is a gem, and I highly recommend it to any and everyone.
Evelyn and her husband Hy are long gone, but Evelyn's joy and delight lives on through this book and myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated but useful for style
This is a good basic book for those looking for information on mission style lamps. Other reviewers have noteddimensions for actually constructing the some of the projects are contradictory. I would use this more as a cncept/style book from which to develop my own more contemporary version plans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good book, although a little dated. Recomended as a start point for those interested in Mission/Arts and Crafts/Shaker furniture.

3-0 out of 5 stars Authentic turn-of-the century Mission Designs
This book is a collection of actual Popular Mechanics magazine projects to make Mission style lamps that were originally published in the twenties. However, some techniques presented are outdated, but the daigrams for the proportions and measurements of the lamps and shades are the real jewel here. Some of the instructions are slightly vague and at times a bit hard to follow. But the measurements and proportions are what give true Mission style its appeal and elegance, and these are straight forwardly presented.

For what's here, it's worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally exceeded expectations
Totally exceeded expectations, lots of great ideas, utilized much of this book, great fresh new ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for All
I purchased this crafty book to use when my granddaughters, ages 11 and 4, come over. They like to make things and have good imaginations. They love this book.

They will both pick out something they want to make. Unfortunately, they both never choose the same thing. The book is so well written that it is easy, even for my 11 year old, to follow the directions.

The book contains patterns for many different types of projects: animals, centerpieces, games, decorations, toys and more. The ideas are clever and fun to make. The items are all inexpensive to make using materials such as paper plates, egg cartons, chenille sticks, straws, poster board with crayons, paints, glue and tape to help decorate. If you don't happen to have the material on hand that is called for, it is easy to substitute something else.

This is a fun book full of activities that will keep your children busy and creative for hours.

4-0 out of 5 stars great ideas

This book is packed full of wonderful vintage inspired crafts for the whole family! There's tons of ideas for repurposing items found around the house or even the recycle bin!Beautiful photos and easy to understand instructions guide you through the process of each project. The finished piece looks amazingly complex; no one would ever guess how easy it is to create yourself! There's even a handy gift giving chart for quick handmade present ideas. This book is just what you need for your handmade holiday!

1-0 out of 5 stars Retro?
The most retro part of this book is the kitchen on the cover. The title should read Retro Junk. There is nothing worth making in the book...JUNK...Save your money this book is not worth it. I have no idea what the other reviewers were thinking/looking at Clutter does not equal retro????

4-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Book of Retro Crafts
What a fun, inspirational book! Sadly, I remember many of things in this book, but what's old is new again. It's great to thumb through when you're feeling a little brain-drained. It has seemed to recharge my creative batteries lately. I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing our loud fun and entertaining...and yes, retro!
How many toilets did I see in the 60's with these Crocheted Poodle toilet paper cover?

The 'paint by number Jesus' with the 'Klingon Jesus' variation had me laughing out loud...I was happy to see that an old airstream type camper did not ONLY attract my eye as a perfect studio....I HAVE to make some glitter frames...we used to use chewing gum wrappers for paper folding fun (p. 62), and I think my parents friends had that Starburst Clock...the Encrustacions (shell art) had me laugh with the memories, and I think I have a typed copy of that Mrs. LBJ Pecan Pie recipe (but not tastefully displayed on a plate).

I am foaming at the mouth to make Pill Bottle Shrines and Whimsey Bottles, not to mention Matchstick Art.

The illustrations remind me so very much of the ones in my mom's favorite cookbook....

In short, if you have a sense of humor and love the nostalgic, this should be very fun for you to read, even if you don't make anything from it. I already emailed my best buddies to buy a copy.... um, where is the plaster of paris?

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!
I got this title from the library and intend to buy my own copy v. soon. Suzie Millions has included wonderful pictures and history on scrap-crafts and the kitsch that often results. I found the pictures of her own workspace and craft collection inspiring. I immediately started working on several projects after reading the book. If you like kitschy crafts, I think you will find this book inspirational, comical and worth the $10. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Technical Tome
Loads and loads of information -all in print. The only pictures were on the cover. Information is technical and makes use of the nasties - tin, chrome and copper. It should have been named "Science of the Dyer." If you want to identify anything then you will need more books as this one refers one only to other sources for identification. Good reference book for the technical aspect of dyeing. Dyeing is all about color and this book misses out on that aspect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and realistic
I had been wanting to dye yarn for a long time and I finally ran into this book.It explains everything clearly and warns you multiple times of this not being a science, but rather to expect variations. The book is intended for dyers in the east coast of Canada / NE U.S., where the plants she mentions can be easily found. Nevertheless, anyone can benefit from the technique and general principles explained by the author.

I tried her instructions for the onion dye and it worked like a charm. I got colors very similar to those on the book's cover. Luckily I just pruned my apple trees and plan to use the bark and twigs as dyestuff next.

The book was written before the age of Martha-Stewart detailed instructional photography, so the only thing I wish is that it had included more pictures. But this book should be on every dyer's bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for the price
The only problem with this book is that it lacks colour photos that wouldenhance the reading of this book. However, this book is full ofinformation on how to dye wool and other fibers from plants and lichens. The book goes over all the techniques of dying different fibers. It alsohas a huge section on different plants and what colours you would expect toget when combined with a moderant. The book also contains a section onwhere to get and how to identify plants and moderants as well as otherbooks that are useful. There are many helpful tables on dyebaths, measurements for moderants and the effects of weak, medium and strongdyebaths. This is a wonderful book for the beginning dyer and an excellentresource, it is easy to read and understand eventhough I think it couldhave more pictures of the plants, moderants and different colours you mayget. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book on ribbon crafts
I am very pleased with this purchase. This book shows you more ways to use ribbon than I knew were possible.

My uses for ribbon are mostly scrapbooking, cardmaking, and hairbows for little girls. This book touches on all of those subjects and many more.Additionally, the photographs showing the different types of projects are very beautiful and there are steps showing how to do the projects.

I only wish it had more on making girls hairbows since this is a primary interest of mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book thus far read about using ribbon
I bought this book after checking it out at the library. It is very thorough and I am not an expert in using ribbon--just dabbled. But it was very easy to understand with examples on how to use ribbon in so many different ways that I never knew about. There are very good clear pictures. It is also complete in that it covers ribbon embroidery. This is usually a separate book I have found from just various uses of ribbon.I recommend checking it out at the library first if you can. It's just a better way to 'review' books before buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book!
This is the most fantastic book I've ever gotten. It's applications go from sewing machine to gift wrapping and everything in between. Worth every single penny! I'm so glad I ordered this, I almost didn't. I hate buying craft books without seeing what's in them....you sometimes get burned.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am glad I got this book! I was not sure when I paid for it as I saw a lot of websites that offers free instructions on making bows out of ribbons. But after I read the book, I didn't regret the fact that I have to pay for it. The book has introduce loads of beautiful craft projects, the instruction and photos are really easy to follow, and it gives you very clear idea on lots ofbasic techniques in ribbon crafts. Once you have master this basics, you can start to create unlimited number of projects of your own.

Overall, I think this book really laid very strong foundation for anyone who loves ribbons and would like to start making ribbon crafts! And I actually think it is much better to read and learn from this book rather than search ( and sort) through the numerous websites that teach you bits of ribbon crafts here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper!
The is THE best book I've seen in the sewing/craft market lately. The beautiful pictures alone are enough to make you pick it up time and time again. Each technique has step-by-step instructions with photos, so whether you learn by looking or reading, you're covered either way.
Who knew you could do so much with ribbon? From piping to elaborate rosettes, there's something for everyone in this wonderful book, whether you're a crafter or a serious sewer.
It's a wonderful book to keep on your reference shelf! ... Read more

Product Description
Corrugated Castle. Fancy Foil Fish Mobile. Paper Bead Bangles. Braided Rag Coasters. Old Shoe Flower Pots. Puppy Dog Sock Puppet. With a little imagination, just about anything we think of as trash can be transformed into an art project good enough to give as a gift or to keep and treasure yourself.

In her first Storey Kids book, Nature's Art Box, master crafter Laura C. Martin showed kids how pebbles, twigs, seedpods, and shells can be turned into things of beauty. Now, in Recycled Crafts Box, she uses as her art supplies the paper, plastic, metal, and cloth we usually consign to the recycling bin or the garbage can.

The way Martin sees it, just about everything around us holds artistic possibilities. Plastic picnic plates can be cut up to make a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt (and don't need watering). Roll leftover gift wrap into tight tubes and cut it into small sections to make one of- a-kind beads. Decorate the sides of old paint cans with acrylic paint and tie sturdy rope to the handles to make a pair of stilts.

Along the way, Martin offers sidebars on the history of rubbish and profiles of artists whose medium is junk. She passes along important lessons about being a good steward of the Earth. But the lessons are light and fun--never preachy.

Fun for kids, perfect for involved and homeschooling parents, and ideal for schoolteachers who have seen their art supply budgets slashed, Recycled Crafts Box shows budding artists how to make something beautiful and save the planet at the same time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice!
A friend got this for my daughter and I, and a lot of the projects in it are really suited better for parents with younger children, that being said, we loved it.
My daughter is almost 13 years old, and while a lot of the projects were a lot easier then she likes, they gave her ideas for doing similar things with a bit more complexity. The cardboard castle is a favorite, and she's got big plans for building her brother a dice tower now.
The other thing the book had that we both liked was a lot of information about how things are recycled, and a timeline of disposable manufacturing, so we both learned from it. It's good without being overly preachy, and since it's recycled crafts, the crafts are very inexpensive to make.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gift Purchase
I purchased this book as a gift for a school located in another state.I have no idea how good it is.However, I don't believe the school would have put it on their wish list if they didn't think it wasn't good.I purchase a lot of books from Amazon.com for this school.

5-0 out of 5 stars craft room redo
I am currently reorganizing my office space/craft room and I went to Amazon to look for a book to help. I really like this book. It is the second book I have bought from this author. Some of the pictures are from the same artists, but I think it inspires you and gives you new ideas to use in organizing all your craft materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Ideas
I haven't even finished the book yet as I got it last week, but it has proven to be very useful and even fun to look at and read. Great pictures and information about organization. I just keep going back to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organizing your craft space
This book is good but I would rate it more for beginners who just don't know where to start. It has some good ideas but unfortunately it was not quite what I was looking for because I already have an established workspace but still a very good source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Organizing Your Craft Space

This has to be the best book I have ever read on organizing your craft space. It is practical and resourceful. Being a mixed media artist, who recently moved I created a new smaller organized space with the help of this book. It was recommended to me by an art therapist who was taking chaos and making creative order. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kathy Ross: Big Craft Book of Favorite Bible Stories
I am very pleased with my purchase. It has lots of great craft ideas for many bible lessons. These crafts require some items you will need to collect, such as, salad dressing bottle tops, socks and the craft materials required are inexpensive. Items such as glue on eyes, buttons, glue and construction paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kid-friendly, imaginative crafts
Kathy Ross helps fill in the gap for Sunday School teachers. Sometimes our church cirriculum falls short on craft ideas. Kathy has shared her creativity for craft fun for kids and teachers alike. As a first-grade Sunday School teacher, I look forward to having her books in our Sunday School resource room and to see new craft books in the future!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great craft book from Kathy Ross!!!
Kathy has done it again! Wonderful, creative ideas throughout! My daughter really enjoyed working on these projects and I'm sure your kids will too!! My daughter and I love getting her books and have spent many weekends working together on these creative projects. Kids learn while they work on the crafts, too. We find the projects are often the stepping-off point for discussions about the bible stories. Kudos to the author for yet another job well done!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully imaginative book!
I bought this book and thought it was great. My church is using it in their Sunday School. The ideas are so fun and clever. Thanks to Kathy Ross for another wonderful craft book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is indeed worth buying!
After using her craft books for some time now, I know that Kathy Ross does not use standard craft techniques. She creatively crafts with throw-away materials, which makes her crafts very easy on the budget. My Sunday school class loved making the sock puppet of Jonah sticking out of the mouth of a paperbag whale, as shown on the cover of this book. We also did the mitten puppet of Sarah and baby Isaac, where the thumb of the mitten becomes the craddled baby. I found the projects in this book to be both easy and charming. After taking this book from the library, I had to have my own copy of the entire Christian Craft series for my Sunday school classes.
Thank you Kathy Ross ~ you are a most creative author! Please keep writing and creating! There are many of us that can hardly wait for your next book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Artwork!
This book is unique in that the illustrations are breathtaking! This is an amazing book, retelling the timeless classic story of Sleeping Beauty with the most exquisite artwork, a joy for both parents and children alike! The storyline matches the classic story in history, rather than the storyline Disney created, an excellent book to add to your collection, especially if it is desired that children are aware of the original story in addition to what Disney created.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful!
The illustrations in this retelling are exquisite and almost like delicate portraits from a bygone era. (the illustration of the king carrying Aurora is very touching!) There are also gorgeous details (both in wording and illustration - the falcon, the dog, the rose - oh, and the Prince's horse is beautiful!) K. Y. Y. Craft made a very wise decision, I think, by matching such intricate illustrations with a fairly high-level of vocabulary. The tale will still register with younger readers, but be warned that there were a few times I found myself stumbling over the speech patterns or word choices (however, if you know this going into the read, it shouldn't be an issue but will instead enhance the retelling). Also, the attention to detail in this story really help to take the tale to a elevated level of "read-aloud."

I also was intrigued by K. Y. Craft's decision on how to represent the King. Typical of this version of Sleeping Beauty, the evil fairy is not invited because she is believed either dead or under spell since she hasn't been seen for more than fifty years. However, it is quite apparent that this was simply the King's excuse for not inviting her, because he didn't want the expense of creating another costly golden set place-setting: "for his treasuries were nearly as dear to him as his daughter." Zing! However, the King realizes his selfishness, and his character does have quite an arc by the end.

In this tale it appears that the prince wants to rescue Aurora, which appears more selfless than in some other retellings: "The thought of a sleeping beauty such as Briar Rose lying unprotected in a thorny prison was more than his good and valiant nature could bear." A warning, there is an illustration of the fallen princes within the briar, though they pretty much look like they've been sleeping.

Perhaps my favorite part was the last page, I won't spoil it, but I thought it was very poetic and a great way to summarize the lives of the characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have you seen the picture of Sleeping Beauty with the lute?
If not, that's reason enough to buy this book. It is one of the most luminous and exquisite fairytale paintings I have ever seen. And the rest of the book matches it. Believe the raves - if you love fairytales and art this book is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awakes the Beauty in one.
The art of this book becomes a collector's item.So beautiful and lifting for adults as well as children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
