Save your money.
This book might be useful IF you were working with an elementary school drama club, in a big enough city to have dozens of thrift stores and IF you had absolutely NO skills at sewing, ability to read a script OR imagination.I ordered it because it looked like it might have some useful suggestions, but it is nothing but a record of how a specific garment was changed into a specific costume, mostly with hot glue.It's not even accurate as to when various musicals are set!

I Love this Book!
If you need to make a costume for an event or for a theatrical performance and you don't have the time, skill or interest in sewing from a pattern, then this book is for you. It is packed with clever ideas that transform old clothing into great costumes. The woman is a genius! On the down side, it is not geared to kids costumes, so you might be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. Also, be warned that some of the costumes shown for a particular show are not period or character correct in some cases (Jud in Oklahoma for example). If you are costuming a show, you should do your own research. Overall, though, this is a great book that I refer to often.

It need color pictures so badly!
If you think this book would be a good inspiring source for your Halloween costume or for your kids' school show, think again.
The ideas in this book are good but it has several big problems. First, there are no color pictures. Each entity has a hand drawn illustration for the alternation and a two inches high, whole person figure, very bad quality, black and white picture to show the final result. Since most of the costumes here need at lest two pieces of original clothing of different color and style to combine with, only if you saw a lot of board way show and hopefully remember exactly how the major characters' costumes looked like, you probably will be easily confused by those illustrations. Second, a lot of material she used here is originally costume itself (or quite fancy old-style dress to say the least) but not ordinary cast-off clothing you might think you could find in nowadays closet.

A Great Book For The Beginning Costumer
I had my doubts at first when the author said she could assemble a costume with just glue,some seam ripping and little to no sewing. ThenI saw the costumes. Wow! I just wish the pics were IN COLOR(hint,hint) so I could fully appreciate them. Now were's my glue gun?;-)

Amazing amount of info for noobs
I only heard good things about this book, and being a first-time fursuit maker, I went ahead and ordered it, because I really didn't know where to start. The book is a wealth of information. It covers myriad possibilities and alternatives for materials, construction techniques and more.
If my first fur-suit doesn't work out 100%, it sure won't be the fault of this book.

Great book for Furries
Great book for those interested in making fursuits. Goes over all the basics, but unfortunately just barely touches the more advanced stuff like air brushing. The book is also a little out dated concerning the various newer techniques like the "ninja hood" style mask and body part molding. Still a great book to have to give you an idea how to make a suit from scratch. A great costume is essential for all belly dancers. This book helps you not only start any costume project, it also provides some ideas on how to make you items totally unique.

A must for beginner costumers!
This is a really good book for all dancers to read.Understanding costume basics is important even if you are not making your own.I keep this in the classroom for students to look through.I put each page in a page protector and inserted them all in a notebook.The girls love using it as a reference and I recommend they get their own copies and start building their bellydance libraries.

a very good scource/reference book[let],more of it would have been good,as was bit thin on pages, but still an exellent ideas book with drawings & explanations easy to understand, i liked it.

good ideas, little sewing exp needed
I'm a beginning bellydancer but an experienced seamstress.My specialty is in proms/bridesmaid/formal wear.Love that this book is spiral bound for laying flat. Lots of good quick ideas, with variations & samples to enhance & create more ornate costumes. Some of the projects will be easier with some sewing experience(some of the instructions might be a little unclear at first reading) but most can be created with minimal sewing skills. It is a good starting point.I consider this book a definite plus in my sewing library for branching out into costuming.The ideas presented go beyond just bellydance and can be used in other areas of dance and/or costuming. My New Favourite Book

Amazing!
I am amazed at how detailed and beautiful these dolls are made with scraps of material and with a little practice I have managed to do fairly well with the faces! My girlfriends will love a mini replica of them for a Christmas gift.

A little inaccessible, but very helpful
I bought this book looking for some help in making basic Classical and Romantic tutus.The book is dominated by illustrations, and the instructions could have been written a little more clearly -- but after re-reading them very carefully, I decided that all the information I wanted was actually there.It's just a little inaccessible.

The book describes how to make basic garments (tutus, leotards, etc.) without a pattern, and then has lots of illustrations to show how you might modify them for particular styles and dances.So, to get any use out of this book, you'll need to buy some cheap material, and draft your own patterns with the help of the book and perhaps a little trial and error.If you absolutely have to be provided with a proper pattern, you'll need to look elsewhere for it.Even so, the example illustrations may be helpful in adapting a basic costume to suit a particular dance, once you've obtained the basic pattern elsewhere.

The content of the book is just as old as I am -- first published in 1975 -- which is probably why Lycra (tm) isn't mentioned in the book at all!So if you're determined to use Lycra, you'll have to figure out for yourself what differences it will make to the design and construction.

Overall, this is a very good book which could really use a new revision to take account of new materials, and to make the text a little more accessible.

How to dress dancers: how do you dress dancers?
I went to the library to get this book out when I needed to make costumes for my daughters dance recital. It was an amatuer production of Swan Lake; so I needed some help making the classical tutus.
