But there are hardly any pictures. It's pages and pages of boring texts, with very little pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This is a cookbook for people who want to cut fat, and calories out of their diet.
I subscribe to the magazine but try to buy each year's book because I like the recipes so much

5-0 out of 5 stars cook book
Purchased this as a gift for my daughter, newlywed. She likes to eat healthy and she has found this book to be very helpful, easy recipes and has said the meals she has prepared have all been good. She would like for me to continue purchasing these books, as you have the whole year of recipes from Cooking Light in one book.Would highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome as usual
This annual edition was filled with delicious and easy recipes. Look up the ingredient you want to use and you will find many recipes sure to please the palate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Path to Eating Right
Cooking Light magazine is the best lifestyle, health conscience magazine published. It appeals to the novice and the experienced chef and health nut.I bought the book because I own 2 previous editions. These cookbooks are awesome.Years ago, I barely knew how to throw together spaghetti. Now, I explore my cookbooks and magazines for new ideas. The recipes appeal, not only to me, but my young son and husband.Meal time doesn't have to be bland or fattening anymore!!It takes getting used to the formating, receipes grouped by month; however, it works better for produce that is in season. Why spend a fortune in February for something that comes in spring or summer? What really helped me get started down this path, was the easy & fast receipes. They allowed me to graduate to more complicated dishes.I recommend this book (and the other Cooking Light publications) to everyone that I can. ... I got this book because my friend has it.It has great recipes that are easy and tasty. The price is a lot better, even with bookstore coupons.I can't wait to try several recipes with my kids.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was hoping for something more
This is a decent kids cook book but it's not much different than other kids cookbooks in terms of the recipes and menus. I was hoping the food would be more family friendly in general not just strictly "kid food" that only kids eat. I'm probably being picky but I'm trying to work on my kids eating food that the rest of us eat so wanted to involve them in cooking without making things that were too complex for them. So a simple cookbook that is aimed for kids but with recipes that help move kids away from typical "kid food" this isn't quite that book.

Overall the food is reasonably healthy though :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun and useful for kids
Our grandson received this for his 10th birthday and has made 3 items from its recipes in 3 days. All were easy enough and all ended in good results except for super hard chocolate chip cookies. Those were the ones I helped him with!I think something got forgotten or something extra was added between the 2 of us trying to get done before supper time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Souithern Living kids cookbook
The children loved the displays and colorful pictures.I think it made them want to get involved the cooking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for his needs!
I ordered this and two other cookbooks geared to the young "cook" in the kitchen. My nephew, now a teen, is challenged but enjoys being in the kitchen with his mom when time allows for them to share an activity together. As described, the book would seem to offer a simplicity of direction and attractive photos of just what one was aiming for in following the recipe.Tony is convinced that the "southern living" has to mean it's a Paula Deen cookbook; it's not, in this case, but the "southern" was enough to pull his interest to any recipes of choice. My feeling was that, among the 124 recipes included in this cookbook, there would certainly be some that he would be able to follow, thus having the satisfaction of creating something edible from his very own book. ... Product Description
With sales of more than one-half million copies since its original publication in 1951, Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book is one of the most popular regional cookbooks available. Here are nearly 1,000 recipes from the South's finest kitchens—treasured old recipes from southern households, favorite dishes from hotels and restaurants with a tradition of Southern cuisine, and newer recipes that take advantage of prepared products.

This edition incorporates many new recipes sent to Mrs. Brown by enthusiastic users of the first edition. Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book retains its true Southern flavor, but it illustrates the increasing cosmopolitanism of the Southern palate. It also takes heed of the fact that today's cook is constantly on the go and needs many simple, easy-to-prepare dishes, and that prepared mixes and packaged and processed foods are an important part of today's preparation of meals. And the recipes themselves have been reorganized and presented in a way that makes them easier to follow for the inexperienced cook. Marion Brown's Southern Cook Book makes the charm and good company of the best Southern cookery available to everyone. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My First Cookbook, in 1971
My father, who is now 93 and was an excellent cook in his day, gave me a hard bound edition of Marion Browns Southern Cookbook in 1971 while I was in college in Stateboro, GA. It was my first cookbook, and I have used it extensively during the past 38 years. While the new version is ok, I'll stick with my classic edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars New is not always better, with Southern Cooking.
I glanced through a copy of this 2001 newest edition, and felt the book lacked the "heart" of my old 1951 paperback edition of The Southern Cook Book by Marion Brown.I went home, flipped through the yellowed pages of my friendly old paperback, and fell in love with it again!

The 1951 version is one of THE classic books of Southern Cooking, and at 57 years old, is still alive with Marion's voice and the spirit of her quest to gather up many old recipes before they were lost.

There is a place for the new edition, with recipes using items not cooked from scratch, and it records how "fast"er foods are used by some cooks today for a newer taste. I can buy a Rachael Ray book, or google recipes by cooks not even born in 1950, 1960, or 1970and learn some of these trendier New Southern recipes with ingredients such as ginger, foie gras, shaved truffles, all nicely stacked up. Thanks, but I'll pass on most of these dishes, just the same.

If you are serious about Southern Cooking, get the 1951 copyrighted version of The Southern Cook Book, Edna Lewis's 3 books, and try some of the newer Southern cooking styles as well, with Ronni Lundy, Camille Glenn, Frank Stitt's Southern Table, John Martin's books, many fine New Orleans cookbooks, and experience all that is "Southern Cooking", fromcooks and writers from Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and up through Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Better yet, taste today's cooking as a yardstick of comparisonat the vanishing "Mom and Pop" tiny restaurants (for "meat and three"'s) and sample regional variations (Vinegar, tomato, mustard bases etc) at numerous BBQthroughout the South.

Try Charleston's Justines and the shrimp and grits at Middleton Plantation, sample the more upscale restaurants as well, such as Charleston Grille and McCready's in Charleston. Try BBQ at Sgt. White's Diner , and surprisingly tasty food at Gilligan's, both in Beaufort, SC. You MUST go to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House in Savannah to try 35 different try Southern dishes at one setting, and pass on by the less authentic steam table foods at Lady and Sons, despite lovely Paula's humor and accent!

DO visit the Beautiful monuments and stunning trees of Bonaventure cemetery just outside Savannah, and toast all those who cooked, laughed and loved before us.

3-0 out of 5 stars Newer Is Not Better
I acquired my first copy (paperback) of this cookbook and have drug it halfway around the world and back several times. I have used it (loved it) almost to death: its old, yellowing pages are loose and falling out. I decided to get a new copy. Fortunately I did not throw out the old copy as I find, just at first check, that two of my most favorite recipes are not included in this latest printing. Example #1: I use/used the "Dora & Jim's Hushpuppies" which uses onion & most importantly makes a quantity for about 8-10 people. The recipe that was kept for hushpuppies is one that does not include onion and it makes a quantity for about 50 people!!! How often does anyone make hushpuppies for 50 people?! Example #2: I'm Southern born and every pecan pie made in my family has always used Karo or similiar 'cane syrup'; so I always used a variation of two recipes in the old cookbook: Mrs. Clarks Karo Pies, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie.Both are missing from the new printing, and what's left may well make a good pie. But it's not the recipes I liked best; and it doesn't use Karo syrup...it uses brown sugar....sounds almost Yankee to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook.
This cookbook from the early '50s holds up remarkably well given changes in taste and diet over the years.

We particularly like the stuffing recipe but there's a wealth of palatable dishes here. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Without Equal!
Southern cooking is famous the world over. It defines comfort food. Simple, elegant, satisfying. The height of Southern cooking was before the "War of Northern Agression", and this book details this flavorful art. Starting with "Understanding Southern Cooking" and "The Classical Southern Kitchen" the author continues through every type of food in the Southern repetoire.

Recipes are from cookbooks of the era as well as manuscripts and family records. The only changes made are those necessitated by modern equipment and availability (most of us no longer cook over an open hearth.) Side notes explain the recipes, culture and alternatives. This is Southern cooking at it's best!

If Amazon.com ever gets this book back in stock, buy it. Buy extras for friends and relatives. My collection of cookbooks is measured by the yard. Nothing I have equals this one for ease of use, pleasure of reading, or soul-satisfying results.

My name is Christy Jordan and I like to feed people.

I come from a long line of Southern cooks who taught me home cooking is best, life is good, and there is always something to be grateful for. I created Southern Plate so that I could share the recipes and stories that have been passed down through my family for more than nine generations.

You won't find fancy food or new-fangled recipes in this cookbook—just easy, no-fuss Southern favorites such as Chicken and Dumplings, Homemade Banana Pudding, Aunt Looney's Macaroni Salad, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Daddy's Rise-and-Shine Biscuits. (I want to make one thing as clear as possible: How your mama made it is the right way! I'm going to bring it to you how my mama made it, which is the only right way for me.)

These stories and recipes come from my heart. They are a gift from my ancestors, but the ability to have them heard is a gift from you. Take a seat at the Southern Plate table; you're with family now.

From Southern Plate: Lela’s Fried Fruit Pies

These are my great-grandmother’s pies. I remember Lela standing in the kitchen humming as she fried these, placing the crispy treats on a paper towel–lined plate next to the stove as she dipped more into the hot oil in her cast-iron skillet. The entire house smelled of peaches, because that was her favorite kind of fruit pie.

If you’re yearning for an old-fashioned fried pie like Granny used to make, you’ve come to the right place. This recipe can easily be modified to accommodate your favorite dried fruit. Feel free to modify it to accommodate your own tastes. Most folks start out making these with dried apples but even though we love apples, nothing can beat a fried pie made with dried peaches.

    Filling

    • 6 to 7 ounces dried fruit (I used peaches; you can also use apples, apricots, or other dried fruit)
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
    • 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Place the dried fruit in a large saucepan and add the water and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the fruit is tender and the sugar is dissolved, about 20 minutes. Add all the other ingredients and mash together with a potato masher or fork. Set aside while you prepare the dough.

    Dough

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1⁄2 cup shortening
    • 1⁄2 cup milk, plus more if needed
    • Vegetable oil

    Directions

To make the dough, in a medium bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the shortening with a long-tined fork. Add the milk and stir until the dough sticks together. Divide into 10 portions. Roll each portion out on a floured surface into a 5- or 6-inch circle. Place 2 tablespoons of filling in each. Wet the edges and fold over, crimping with a fork.

In a large skillet, pour the oil to a depth of 1⁄4 inch and heat over medium heat. Add the fruit pies to the hot oil and fry until browned on both sides, 3 to 4 minutes, turning as needed. Remove to a paper towel–lined plate.

    Makes 10 pies.

From Southern Plate: Baked Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese is a must-have whenever kids are around, and there are countless takes on this classic comfort food, so I couldn’t bring you just one. This is the recipe for the baked version, which is for those who prefer stringy, extra cheesy mac and cheese. It’s best made in an ovenproof bowl rather than a 9 x 13-inch pan.

    Ingredients

    • 2 1⁄2 cups uncooked macaroni
    • 2 1⁄2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 1 1⁄4 teaspoons salt
    • Black pepper to taste (I use about 1 teaspoon)
    • 4 tablespoons (1⁄2 stick) margarine, cut into small slices
    • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
    • 1 cup milk

    Directions

First, preheat the oven to 350°F. Next, cook the pasta according to the package directions until tender and drain. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and pepper and set aside. Spray an oven-safe bowl or dish with cooking spray. Place half of the macaroni in the bowl or dish. Sprinkle half of the flour mixture over the top and then top with half of the margarine slices. Sprinkle 11⁄2 cups of the cheese over the top. Repeat. Pour the milk over all. Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, until bubbly. Serve hot.

    Makes 8 servings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Southern Cooking!
Christy Jordan's Southern Plate is the best cookbook I have ever read! She has captured the essence of traditional southern cooking just like my Mother and Grandmother have always done--and they are the best cooks in the world.Christy and this cookbook have brought back my joy of cooking. This will always be a staple in my kitchen and I can't wait to share this book this holiday season!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great cookbook
I have followed Southern Plate on her blog for about a year. All of the food I have made has been a winner. What I really like is this: I have what I need on hand no need to run to the store. Also, most are done quickly and/ or ahead of time. The only reason I dropped a star was because I like to see a picture of every finished product. Yes, most of what is in the book is available online. However, I chose to buy this book for 2 reasons #1 to have a hard copy that I can have out while cooking. #2 to support her. She pours her heart into the blog for us and if I can give less than $20 to support her efforts I am happy to. It will ensure the future of the blog and hopefully another cookbook! Well done Christy!

5-0 out of 5 stars My new go-to cookbook
I love this cookbook! It is my new go-to southern cookbook and here are my reasons:

    1) Easy to follow recipes of forgotten favorites.You know that recipe your grandmother made but never actually measured anything so you could never replicate it?My grandmother was notorious for saying "No need to measure honey just put in this much!" {then proceeds to show me how much was measured in her hand}

    2) Beautiful photography (most recipes have a picture of the final product).

    3) Pages are printed on a nice weight paper (not flimsy) so it should hold up to lots of use!

    4) I love that the cookbook is divided into seasons (instead of the traditional appetizers, dinners, desserts, etc) because that is how I cook.

    5) Last but not least, heartwarming stories about family and southern traditions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful
    This cookbook is wonderful!

I have been following Christy's blog for approximately 1 1/2 yrs.I've always enjoyed reading her stories, recipes, and sometimes craft ideas. The very first thing I tried of her's was not actually a recipe.Last Christmas, I made her hand and footprint reindeer shirts for both of my girls. What a wonderful keepsake! It took me some time before I finally tried a recipe.I knew from then on that I had found an incredible source of simple, delicious food!

This cookbook is an incredible read for the stories, if nothing else. The recipes are kind of like the icing on the cake.I can't wait to try more!

Christy Jordan comes off as one of the most warm hearted, down to earth, and sweet, people I have ever come across. When you read her writings, you just want to be her best friend. If she ever makes it to Missouri, I will be there!I told my husband that this was the first time I would ever consider going to a book signing.Well, not just consider but actually go.I'll be waiting with some ice cold Diet Dr. Pepper if she ever shows!

This should sum it up:My husband (of course,he maintains he is not a picky eater, lol) just two days ago said to me, "Is there anything you've tried of this lady's that I haven't liked?"Nope! :)

Way to Go, Christy!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Its Great
Thanks for a great mac and cheese dish. I had had something similar in a restaurant while traveling and couldn't figure out what the ingredients were so thanx to this book I now make great mac & cheese. Its also very entertaining. Its one to have on your shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars So So Soul
The book is so, so. It is not so great, and not so bad. Great recipes and helpful with tips and advice. I wasn't crazy about how the table of contents was set up. The index section was better when trying to find a certain recipe. All in all though the recipe's are great. Love the Mac and Cheese!!!!

    2-0 out of 5 stars Deliah's Everyday Soul: ... So What's New?
I was really excited at first and to be honest, just a tadbit apprehensive.I had read some other reviews and thought I'll go ahead and give the book a try so I could be fair and judge for myself. Well... I should have listened.I found this cookbook a delightful read, her personal stories are funny and heartwarming. I even appreciated some of her insightful tips on entertaining, and I found the "Essentials of Soulful Southern Cooking" somewhat informative. I did find some recipes that were new and inspiring such as the Collard Green Rolls (pg 67) and the Jerk Shrimp with Grits(pg 72)but I was sorely disappointed in the substance or shall I say the lack of substance regarding some of her recipes. For intstance, do we really need a cookbook to tell us how to fry bacon (pg 182) or french fries (pg 160)? I'm from the South as well and I think some things just come with the territory so I wasn't as impressed with this book as I had hoped. For the novice cook, maybe Cheesy Scrambled Eggs (pg 185) or Deviled Eggs(pg 132) is impressive but to call this "Southern Cooking with Style", I ask ... So what's new? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You have to try the Chicken Fried Tofu Steak
This cookbook is the best vegetarian cookbook I have found in while (and I have been vegetarian for 20 years), by far the best recipe in the book is for Chicken Fried Tofu Steak - even carnivores love this recipe. I have not had a recipe from this cookbook that wasn't good, I highly recommend it. Also, most of the recipes are actually vegan, and added bonus

5-0 out of 5 stars All the recipes you were looking for and couldn't find
Just purchased this cookbook and all I could say was WOW.All the recipes I have been looking for done in a neat and simple format. My vegan daughter saw it and started immediately making a list of all the things she wanted me to make her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous cookbook!
I sat down and read this book through from start to finish. It has inspired me to embrace southern food culture, and to start cooking more. She gives a lot of tips on cooking in general, which I appreciated. I love the ideas about how to make dishes such as beans taste as though they have bacon in them (*toasted* sesame oil is one method). This is an inexpensive, wonderful cookbook that is a must-have for any southern vegetarians out there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Southern Recipes
If you want southern cooking without the cholesterol or meat, this is the cookbook for you. Most of the recipes have easy to find ingredients and the resulting dishes are great.I especially love the strawberry shortcake recipe and have used it again & again. Most recipes are vegan or can be made so with only a few exceptions. Also most of the recipes are not very spicy, which was a plus to me as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow--Comfort Food at its Best
This is probably the best vegetarian cookbook I've ever had.The recipes are simple, Jackson's tone is conversational, and every time I pick up the book, I see something new.I've tried about a half-dozen recipes in this book, and they've all been fantastic. So far:overnight cinnamon rolls, dump cobbler, country ham tofu, fried chicken tofu, and the requisite gravies. There are so many more recipes that I want to try.Do note, though, that not all of these are "healthy"--many of them require good amounts of sesame oil and or margarine. But I don't care--what a great book.I've gotten it for family and friends, and my dad (yes, my dad!) even had second helpings of the country ham tofu.A keeper. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome recipes and a great value for the $!
The Southern Living cookbook series is a great set of books, but the compilation books are above the grade.Even though I already owned the The All New Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook: Over 1,250 of Our Best Recipes (Southern Living (Hardcover Oxmoor)), I decided to get this one as well.Several of the pages of my cookbook are permanently marked due to the repeat times I've made several of the dishes here.

The Banana Nut Bread (page 55) is a great breakfast staple. The Eye of Round Roast with Garlic Potatoes (page 109) makes a great dinner, but even better lunch the day after. The Baby Blue Salad (page 176) is delicious and quick to make in any season. As for desserts, you can't go wrong with the Pecan Pie Cake (page 314), the Italian Cream Cake (page 319) or the many, many others.

I got the book as an early wedding present from my fiance. We have been to the Loveless Cafe many times. I was aware that the bisquit recipe wasn't in the book. You will never pry it from the Loveless Cafe. I have made several things from the book and they have been excellent. The peanut butter pie is very good, plus it freezes very well. So far, I'm thrilled. I can't wait to try other things from the book. It's a book for those that love Southern cooking. Mighty fine cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars Polish the silver, set out the best china, light the candles
It's Christmas...all through this book. I "borrowed" this book a couple of years ago and finally returned it, but only after buying my own copy!

Southern Living puts out the best cookbooks. The recipes are tried and true, easy to follow and, always, delicious.

In Santa's Bakeshop you'll find Fresh Lemon Muffins, Gumdrop Wreath Bread, and Herb Buttered Crescents. My family loves Cheesy Pretzel Rolls, which fast became a classic when I first found the recipe.

The Cream-filled Chocolate Cake on page 64 became a staple for birthdays in our house, so it gets a workout more than once a year.

Chapter titles are as festive as the season: Merry Munchies, Visions of Sugarplums, Elfin Delights (full of treats for the children like Santa Claus Cupcakes), Frosty Fixings and Making a List, to name a few.

Although there are appetizers and some sandwiches (like Peanut Butter Candy Cane sandwiches for the kids), the emphasis here is on sweets -- drinks, cookies, cakes, breads and candies -- so don't buy this one if you're looking for entrees or vegetable dishes.

The book is gorgeous. Illustrations are Christmasy and colorful photographs that are as appetizing as the recipes. As usual, with a Southern Living Cookbook you can't go wrong.

I like that it provides calorie info, the meals taste good, and generally have a 30 minute or less start to table time (except the few slow cook items).

    Product Description
Foreword by Sandra Oliver; with more than 250 recipes. For cooks who want to experience a link to culinary history, Hearthside Cooking is a treasure trove of early American delights. First published in 1986, it has become a standard guide for museum interpreters and guides, culinary historians, historical re-enactors, campers, scouts, and home cooks interested in foodways and experimenting with new recipes and techniques.

Hearthside Cooking contains recipes for more than 250 historic dishes, including breads, soups, entrées, cakes, custards, sauces, and more. For each dish, Nancy Carter Crump provides two sets of instructions, so dishes can be prepared over the open fire or using modern kitchen appliances. For novice hearthside cooks, Crump offers specific tips for proper hearth cooking, including fire construction, safety, tools, utensils, and methods.

More than just a cookbook, Hearthside Cooking also includes information about the men and women who wrote the original recipes, which Crump discovered by scouring old Virginia cookbooks, hand-written receipt books, and other primary sources in archival collections. With this new edition, Crump includes additional information on African American foodways, how the Civil War affected traditional southern food customs, and the late-nineteenth-century transition from hearth to stove cooking. Hearthside Cooking offers twenty-first-century cooks an enjoyable, informative resource for traditional cooking. ... Read more

I love this book. The recipes are simple, easy to follow and delishious. But even better than that. I love the way she explains how cooking was done before the Revolutionary War, which I found facinating. She writes very well and the story is wonderful.
Try the Corn Fritters for breakfast or the Corn Pudding for a light supper. For the Friar's Omelet, I made hommade applesauce for step one, added butter and cinnamon, nutmeg in step 2 and my family loved it. I also substituted all milk for the half cream and milk in Sirley Plantation Mushroom Soup to save a little on the fat. If you love history and you love good food, you will love this cookbook. ... Amazon.com Exclusive: "A Night in Louisville" by Matt Lee and Ted Lee
On a clear, brisk February afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, in the asphalt parking lot of Lynn's Paradise Cafe, we started a fire. All it took to get going was some wadded-up newspaper, a small pyramid of charcoal, and a match. To keep the flame alive, we put our cheeks to the chilly pavement and blew on the bottom layer of coals. Diners leaving the cafe from early dinners glanced at us, chuckled nervously, and hurried along to their cars. When the pile was glowing, we added some split logs and the plume of smoke rising from the pavement became woodsy and fragrant. By the time the sun went down, the flames were hotter and brighter, so we added more oak. Once the fire was roaring, customers in the restaurant became concerned, and the chef, Sarah, in clogs and a kerchief, shuffled out with the buttoned-up manager, Lori, to check on us.

Praise for The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook

"The Lee Bros. have written the classic Southern cookbook. They write with flair, brilliance, and hilarious commentary on the recipes, customs, and eccentricities of the South they celebrate with such passion. Their recipes are so good that I believe cookbook writers like the Lee Bros. may turn Southern cooking into an actual cuisine." --Pat Conroy, author of The Prince of Tides

"I'm a bag fan of that particular brand of Southern poetry and smarts that make up the Lee Bros.' contributions--the best food pieces I read in the Wednesday New York Times each week--so I attacked Matt and Ted's new book like a hungry wolf. I found the same genius and eye for a good story, as well as simple-to-make recipes of the new exotic cooking of the American South. These recipes make my mouth water, and the prose makes my eyes well up for its beauty, simplicity, and truth." --Mario Batali, chef/owner, Babbo restaurant

"These guys can cook! Just reading the recipes makes me ravenous for scintillating Southern dishes. Sign me up for Tuesday Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Buttermilk Pie!" --Bobby Flay, chef/owner, Mesa Grill, BOLO, and Bar Americain

"The brothers Lee chronicle a South unbound by geography. They celebrate a people loosed from the burden of history but still mindful of the ties that bind. In the Lee South, boiled peanuts and edamame play well together. So do black and white, young and old, native and outlander. You'll feel welcome here." --John T. Edge, author of Southern Belly: the Ultimate Food Lover's Companion to the South

"The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook makes me daydream of a long ago summer on a Pawleys Island back porch, the aroma of the marsh and the dinner table mingling with laughter of many generations of families and a few too many glasses of wine. Oh to the magic of being at table together in the South." --Frank Stitt, author of Frank Stitt's Southern Table

"The wit and enthusiasm of the Lee Bros. is irresistible, as are the recipes--a mix of traditional Southern classics and unique, highly individual creations--which will have you reaching for your cast-iron (or stainless steel) skillet." --Scott Peacock, author of The Gift of Southern Cooking

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written!
My husband and I returned from a trip to Charleston, SC and I quickly purchased this book. I really wish I had read the book prior to our trip since they mention specific spots. The stories along with the recipes are so enjoyable to read that it almost doesn't matter if the recipes are any good. Such a charming cookbook! You do need some specialty products for some of the recipes, but they try to offer up alternatives. The cheese straws are amazing and I look forward to trying all of the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook!
I have at least 40 cookbooks which I have acquired over the years but this is my favorite by far.I continually go back to this one for new, EASY, creative recipes which are always a hit with my family and for entertaining. The majority of the recipes have just a few ingredients and are simple to prepare...or I wouldn't be making in the first place!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good recipes, times misleading
I've now tried 4 of the recipes in this book, and they've turned out nicely.Pictures are good too.The one thing I have a problem with is that the prep times don't include prep - because the ingredient list contains already prepped items, such as 1/2 c celery, chopped, or 8 oz chopped sun dried tomatoes- items which I actually have to prep, and many of them just don't come that way.I still highly recommend this book for fast delicious recipes - just add an extra 10 minutes to the times.(The molten cakes on the cover are easy and delicious).

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great cookbook!
I saw a similar cookbook while visitng a friend. It was out of print. This one is even better with great, easy & quick recipes.Every one I have tried has been a hit with my family.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quick doesn't have to mean processed
I like flavor! I love to eat good food! And I am all about saving time but come on- does this mean I have to use so much tasteless processed food! Very disappointing. ... Read more
