5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Story for Anyone at Anytime
Oh, if only everyone could have a grandpa like Gus...
I was originally drawn to this book while searching for books for my son (there aren't alot out there for little men, anymore). That it was a Christmas book was a wonderful plus... but as we read and re-read this, we always take away so much more. Our older daughters would come and sit down to listen to this very sweet, little re-aloud and we would come up with ideas on how we could contribute - not only at Christmas, but year around!
We still read this wonderful little book (always followed by baking some delicious sugar cookies) even though our children are much older. They "pile" up around me as we have wonderful, warm memories of when they fit in my lap and we are inspired all over again to help others!
On a purely superficial note:The watercolor illustrations are as beautiful and heartwarming as the story itself.
Many Blessings,

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you live in US
All the recipes that I've tried until now, were great. However, some recipes ask for Betty Crocker products, like cake mix, or biscuit mix.I live in Peru, so there are like 1 or 2 Betty Crocker products that I can use, and half of the recipes need those products.
At the end of the day, it is like I bought only half book!
Same with other Betty Crocker books.

Product Description
Imagine a kitchen warm witih the smells of sweet vanilla, fragrant cinnamon, and fresh butter. On the kitchen counter is a cooling rack piled high with fresh-from-the-oven delights filled with chocolate chips and crunchy pecans. Ah, the age-old comfort of cookies.

Next imagine that each of the yummy treats began with a convenient box of cake mix. That's right, a standard 18.25-ounce box of cake mix is the secret to some of the tastiest, simplest, and most irresistable cookies imaginable. With a few extra ingredients, turns of a spoon, and whirrs of a mixer, cake mix can make anyone a prize cookie baker.

Like Cookie Dough Delights and Brownie Mix Bliss, Cake-Mix Cookies is the first cookbook of its kind. Although several cake-mix cookbooks exist, including the bestselling Cake Mix Doctor books and 101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix, they offer only a small number of cookie and bar recipes and overlap one another.

By contrast, Cake-Mix Cookies is filled with an array of more than 175 drop, shaped, filled, and bar cookie options for every occasion. Numerous all-American favorites are used as starting points: chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, jam thumbprints, and dark chocolate brownies. There are also new takes on classic European cookies; for example, crunchy Italian biscotti, tender French madeleines, and rich Viennese teacakes. Finally, a healthy dose of new cookies has been created for the book: blackberry-lemon buttermilk bars, triple chocolate chess squares, and chocolate blackout.

Cake-Mix Cookies contains the broadest range of new recipes for cookies and bars that is unavailable elsewhere. And while it capitalizes on the popularity of baking with cake mixes, it has its own unique niche on the home cook's shelf. ... Read more

Excellent transaction.Service was great, received in great time.So I ordered one for my daughter.Super book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cake Mix Cookies: It's a winner!
This "Cake Mix Cookies" book will stay close to me.I've tried four cookies so far: the oatmeal-raisin, chocolate, orange-creme cheese, and the "have it your way cookie."They are all easy to make, lovely, chewy cookies.Use butter and make a cookie you can be proud of.

This cookie book is so marvelous!I have tried many recipes and they have all been the best I have ever had.If you don't buy this book, you will definitely be missing out.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks out there
This book is awesome.I recently purchased it for my Mom for Mother's Day, but received one for myself as a Christmas present last year. It's filled with amazing yet simple recipes that are incredibly delicious.I can usually whip one of these recipes up in a matter of minutes and my family raves about how wonderful they are.I've not made anything out of this cookbook yet that hasn't been gobbled up within days of making it.It's great when you need to make something for a school function or family get together.Everyone always asks for the recipes and I tell them where I got the book. It's well worth the money and then some. It's by far the best cookbook that I own. Also, the one that I ordered for my Mom arrived quickly, in time for Mother's Day, way ahead of the projected delivery date. It's an absolutely great gift for yourself or anyone that loves to cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!
My grandma was looking for an activity for us to do together and she bought this book because she knows I love baking, and thought this is something easy we could do together. It was a great book! She picked out five recipes for us to try out the first afternoon, and we had the first one mixed up before the oven was preheated! One of the cookies was super simple (add choc chips to cake mix with some oil), and you could tell that it was a cake mix, but the rest you wouldn't be able to tell at all. They were delicious! We've already picked out five more recipes for next time.Try it for yourself!

I liked this book so much that I ordered two more for Christmas presents for my daughter and daughter-in-law.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy useful cookie recipes
This book has many wonderful recipes. It's great for making cookies or bars using ingredients that I have on hand or need to use up. I've made about 12 so far -- mostly worth repeating but a few less than fantastic recipes, but that's OK. There are 1001 to choose from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Back Fond Memories
I thoroughly enjoy baking vrom this cookbook.I have not run into a typo yet on any of the delicious recipes I've tried.I have made over 30 different cookies from this book. Many people have asked me for the recipes and the cookie cans are always empty when I present them to people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I have been using this book for several years and absolutely love to make gifts for my friends using the book. The recipes are easy. The book describes how things are to be stacked in the jar to look their prettiest, and the instructions are very easy to follow. My friends love the gifts.I have used the prepared jars for my own "quick" cookies and the cookies are delicious!I highly recommend the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very dissatisfied
I was extremely unhappy with this book, a few of the recipes were alright. However, many of the recipes were very dry and hard to form into cookies due to not enough liquid.Another problem was the ability to layer all the ingredients into the mason jar!!!!THEY WOULDN'T FIT therefore having ruined a whole recipe of ingredients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy and delicious
I bought this book before Christmas so I could give jar recipes to everyone in our very large extended family. They loved the cookies!I loved them so much I bought an extra set of jars so I could have several varieties on hand in our pantry for when the kids want cookies.Okay, for when I want cookies. The recipes in this book are very easy, fun to make, and surprisingly delicious!

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it
The oatmeal cookies in this book are terrible...Sawdust must taste better and it will be more moist. I think she cut back on the recipe quantity so they would fit in the jar...whatever she did it turned out very wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use Cookie Book
I bought this book to use as door prizes at a wedding shower.I found the directions easy to follow.I am definately using the book again to make gifts to give.I received positive feedback from the shower, and several people asked for the recipes of the cookies so they could make them again. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

The recipes were easy to follow. The pictures are great. The book gives a lot of different variety of decorated cookies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decorating Cookies
I love looking at the pictures in the book! Compared to other books on cookies, most of the cookies look wonderfull and very special. Besides that, the book contains a lot of ideas for wrapping the cookies up for a present.I haven't tried any recipes until now but I love 'reading' the book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfied
I was expecting more than the simple decorating ideas this book has offered but I found nothing new in the author's ideas. I am totally disappointed! This book is also overpriced! May be the pictures and the paper made up for the price but the content are not as inspirational as I expected.I gave it a 2 stars because I appreciate the author's confidence in publishing a mediocre decorating book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Uninspirational.
The information contained in this book does not justify the price. With all due respect to the author, these cookie ideas are better suited in pamphlet form given at craft or cake decorating stores.I'm sure the author is qualified. However, with all the competition in the market, I'm afraid this book falls short.

I highly recommend Collette Peters Christmas book which contains breathtaking works of art in both the form of cakes and cookies that the average person can make.If your focus is cookies, Toba Garrett's "Creative Cookies" is the ultimate cookie treasure book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
After reading "Creative Cookies" by Toba Garrett, this book was nothing spectacular.I even paid more for this book.Sorry! ... Read more

When I was six years old, I told everyone who would listen that I wanted this book for my birthday. My Nana got it for me with Green Stamps (remember those?).This started a cookie cookbook collection that is embarrassingly large and spans over forty-four years.I still love to get this book out and look at the pictures.I remember making the Tiny Fudge Tarts and Candy Cane Cookies with my mother. My Aunt Mary and I made the Holiday Apricot Balls ( she preferred no-bake cookies).Just recently I made the Banana Jumbos and they were heavenly! This book is a classic and anyone who loves cookies should own it.

4-0 out of 5 stars mom's cooky book!
I received this as a wedding gift 3 years ago and LOVE it.It's the same "cooky" book my mom had me look through to pick out recipes to make together, only this one doesn't have pages falling out... yet. Many of the recipes are dates and sometimes ingredients aren't as available as they were in the 1960's, but it adds to the fun. It's a great resource and while there are some recipes I would never make it's nice to know I'm making them the same way now as I did with my mom many years ago. :)

Product Description
Make every Christmas a cookie craft Christmas! The holidays offer just the right combination of cold weather and family togetherness for cookie crafters to elevate their skills to showstopping new heights. With more than 60 new Christmas cookie designs, along with festive New Year’s cookies and lovely Hanukkah treats, Cookie Craft Christmas delivers colorful inspiration to cookie decorators just when they need it most.

Each spread features a full-page, close-up photograph of one cookie cutter shape with detailed decorating instructions on the facing page. Some pages feature one gloriously decorated cookie, while others might feature two or three interpretations of the same shape — ornaments in complementary colors, Christmas trees decorated in varying styles, or gingerbread men wearing a rainbow of colors and patterns.

Decorating instructions are as simple as tinting cookie dough green before baking Christmas trees or as intricate as piping hair on a gingerbread grandma, creating a frilly pattern for her apron, and decorating her dress using a pretty feathering technique. Techniques are described in full in a Decorating Glossary, and cookie and icing recipes are included.

Fresh inspiration and fabulous decorating ideas fill the pages of this handy little sourcebook. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who has ever picked up a pastry bag.

Publisher's Note:

The chart on page 17 gives ingredient quantities for making royal icing with meringue powder. Please note that you should use only 4 teaspoons of meringue powder for 2 cups of confectioners' sugar in both the piping and the flooding recipes. (The table incorrectly gives the meringue powder quantity as 4 tablespoons.) This will be corrected in reprints of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Valarie and Janice for another amazing book......
I have so many post-it note flags in this book! I was so inspired (see customer images) I had to share my photos!! I am a beginner at this, I have been watching Martha Stewart do it for years, but really needed a book like this to get my groove on, LOL! Thank you Valarie and Janice for the much needed inspiration.

To all you busy moms out there, it is not impossible to make gorgeous cookies. Follow the directions of this wonderful book (small but mighty) and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish! I have 6 kids underfoot, and was able to decorate over 150 cookies as gifts this Christmas. I didn't buy any gifts or go to the mall, I just got in the kitchen with this book and went for it. I took 1 day to bake, and the next to decorate. Next year I will start earlier. They keep well in clear favor bags sold at craft stores, with a pretty ribbon of your choice to close the top. Hope you find this book as inspirational as I did! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic must-have for every holiday baker!
It's not every day that a book becomes a classic, but Rose Levy Beranbaum has delivered one such book--this one and the 1961 edition of Betty Crocker's Cooky Cookbook are the only two cookie cook books I have gone back to time after time.Rose's Christmas Cookies offers a variety of recipes, not only for Christmas, but anytime, ranging from the fancy show-off cookies to the every day put-in-your-lunchbox variety. The recipes found in this cookbook will soon become part ofyour family's tradition and holiday memories. All of the recipes are good, all are accurate & easy to follow. There is no negative at all to be found with this book and the sole improvement possible would be to make it all easy to wash off the inevitable spatters that occur with a favorite cook book.I've had a copy since it first came out in 1990, and the first copy wore out and had to be replaced (spine took a beating with salivating children deciding what was on the list of to-bake.)If I had to cut my cookbook collection down to a few books, this one would make the cut, its honestly that good.My daughter still practically drools when she sees the book come out, and she's "ever so much more than twenty" to take a line from Peter Pan.

If you are looking for the perfect cookie cookbook for yourself or a gift, this is it.The 1961 Betty Crocker CookieCook Book is another.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many stained pages...
Anyone can tell which cookbooks I love most just by looking at my cookbook shelves. Broken spines and cockeyed pages peeking out in every direction clearly show which ones I prefer to spend time with in the kitchen. This is definitely one of them. Almost every page is stained and dog-eared, and one recipe in here (David's Dreambars) has become so much of a Christmas tradition that I'd probably be drummed out of the family if I neglected to make it. With good reason, too, because it's not only incredibly delicious and decadent, it's also ridiculously easy to make.

Actually, this book has recipes for just about every taste and skill level. The only one I've been disappointed with is "Mrs. King's Irresistibles," and that's mostly because the recipe doesn't call for any salt. It may have been a simple editing error, but these cookies NEED salt or they turn out bland and virtually tasteless.

If you love making cookies (and eating them) during the holidays or at any other time, you need this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An heirloom
After much thought I decided to buy this book and it is wonderful.I am trying every recipe and so far everything has lived up to expectations. There is even a dog biscuit recipe and I must admit my 3 girls are getting rounder by the bikkie.
I shall pass this book to my daughters and granddaughters, it is the ultimate cookie book.Do not bother to look at any other books, this is the only one you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rose's Christman Cookies
This book contains a very informative and interesting list of cookie recipes. Tasty and creative in their designs!!! Gave me a lot of new ideas on presentation and the variety possible in cookie making. Directions and layout are easy to follow

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth purchasing just for the hints, tips, and meticulous details
There are enough detailed reviews on this book for anyone wanting more information.
Like Beranbaum's other books, the recipes are meticulously written, contain beautiful pictures and descriptions and a little "bio" on each cookie in the book. The recipes are also her typical "untypical" recipes and aren't the quick and easy types most people have time to make. These are special cookies you'll be proud to share. These are cookies to savor making with your family and friends.
There are very few recipes in this book that I actually use (lemon bars are my favorite from the book), but I refuse to part with it because of the awesome information she gives on ingredients, tips for better cookie making, storage, etc.
I also love that she includes the weight of the ingredients as that is my preferred way to measure.
I wouldn't pay $20+ for it, but I would absolutely by it for under $10 used! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook - contains my favorite cookie recipe!
Maida Heatter and I share something in common - we love to bake and we love to share our baked goods. Her introduction is entitled "Happiness is Baking Cookies" and I couldn't agree more!

This cookbook is wonderful!I probably have a dozen or more cookie/dessert cookbooks, but this one contains my favorite recipe, Moravian Wafers. This cookie isn't just my favorite one to make - I don't think I've ever had a cookie this wonderful anywhere! They are absolutely addictive. They are very unusual, but every time I make them everyone wants the recipe.

Maida Heatter's cookbooks are always pretty sophisticated with lots of very specific directions to make the cookies come out absolutely perfect (like using parchment paper and rotating the cookies during baking to ensure they are all cooked evenly). But don't let that keep you from trying some of them.I don't always follow all of the detailed instructions, and they still come out really good, but perhaps not all uniform like bakery cookies.

I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who enjoys baking cookies (or someone who thinks it's worth a little effort to eat delicious cookies). My favorite cookie book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maida is a goddess
Undoubtedly the BEST cookie book ever. Each and every one as tasty as the one before. Maida is a fantastic cookbook author and her directions are clear and concise, and I am sure that not even a beginner would have aproblem following along. I make the 'Big Sur' chocolate chip cookies at mycafé and cannot make them fast enough! A clear winner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's inside your chocolate chip cookie?
Mmmm! Fresh chocolate chip cookies, warm from the oven, brown at the edges, soft in the middle, oozing with chunks of melty chocolate! Go ahead, take a bite.
While you're savoring, give a thought to what's inside this all-American favorite treat. One hungry Vermont cow, two days of hard work from a New Hampshire hen, two cups from a field in Kansas ... wait! One cup of flower seeds from Madagascar? Two cups of West African beans? A teaspoon of the Pacific Ocean?
While Grandma makes cookies, her curious cat runs to the encyclopedia, the library, and the Internet to find out the sources of all the ingredients. Grandma's puppy tags along, adding humorous commentary to kitty's research. This unique approach reads like a fun story while presenting an amazing amount of information in appetizing bites. Watercolor illustrations offer a multitude of details to search out on every page.
Safety disclaimer: The text warns young readers not to let their own pets have chocolate, which can be harmful to dogs and cats.
All in Just One Cookie is accessible to a wide age range. Preschoolers will enjoy the surface story of Grandma baking cookies and the antics of the willful cat and dog. Primary kids will be enthralled by fascinating side stories--such as how baking soda is manufactured from trona, a mineral found in a prehistoric lake bed deep, deep under present-day Wyoming. Equally fascinating are the detailed illustrations, including fossils in the trona deposit and the huge machines used to mine the mineral.
Study this unusual picture book at leisure, then try the recipe provided at the end. You'll have a new appreciation for that delicious chocolate chip cookie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so great...
I don't care for books that give the evolution story as our beginning so I am not really thrilled with this book. The book itself is okay and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a kids' book club
My daughter's book club is made up of 8 first and second graders. I picked this book because first of all - everyone likes cookies, right? Secondly, the information and science behind the ingredients was cool, interesting, and well-explained. The girls got a kick out of reading the different ingredient pages and took turns reading the animals' parts as we made a batch of cookies. Plenty of challenging words for the age group, and everyone learned something new, including the parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun book for kids... and adults alike!
Having 3 kids of my own, we're always on the look out for books that not only the kids like, but we as parents like as well. This book is one such book. Not only is it fun, but it's full of fun facts. We first checked this out from the local library, and my kids loved it.We bought it from Amazon to add it to our collection, and I don't think it's been back on the shelf.

We even made the cookies as directed by the book, which the kids thought was amazing (we adjusted for altitude...).

5-0 out of 5 stars What a clever approach!
I love to cook with my kids and my friends' kids, but we never step back to think what went into the ingredients. This cute book is filled with fascinating details about where butter, chocolate and salt come from that will be a delight to share the next time we bake cookies. What a great way to help young people see the broader impact of our daily lives! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Cookie Book by Judy Knipe and Barbara Marks
I have never been very good with cookies, but thought I'd give it one more try. Since receiving this book from Amazon.com I have made six different cookies using their techniques and recipes and they have all been excellent and easy to make.Good directions abound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deliciously Easy
This is a terrific cookie cookbook. I got it out of the libraryhad such good results that I bought it for myself and plan to give it as gifts.

I'm not much of a baker and prefer simple straight forward preparation rather than a lot of steps. There are plenty of recipes that are just that and the results are yummy and elegant cookies.

Readability of the directions is more important to me than photos and the recipes are laid out in an easy to follow format. I also like the introduction to each recipe which includes a description of the finished product that is more informative than a photo. It's also accurate that the recipes aren't just variations off a few basics but have their own uniqueness.

The info on ingredients and decorating are excellent and let you make cookies that look they were done professionally. You'll be a star next Christmas!!

5-0 out of 5 stars No pictures perhaps but full of flavour and variety
This book is at the top of my cookie cook book list because of the originality, ease and sweet delectable taste of most of the cookies listed.I find most cookie books contain variations of the same thing, choc. chip, oatmeal, brownies, sickly sweet goop, etc. you get it.This one is different.Hasn't been one recipe to disappoint me yet. Recipes are well written with introductory descriptions/ history. Many old fashioned type cookies too. Many of the cookies turn out quite elegant as well.Great for parties and bringing to work functions.

You just can't go wrong with this book despite the other reviewer's complaint that it has no photos, only illustrations. The jam and the cream-cheese ones are my favourites. This is the Cookie Monster's "I'd take it with me to a dessert island" type of book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in style of the book
If your looking for a book that shows a picture of each cookie your out of look - not a picture in the entire book. The book shows a sketch of each cook - not an actual picture. I find a picture helpful in knowing what the cookie should look like. The book does have a good selection of cookies but since it does not contain any pictures, I am giving it a low rating.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than basics
I was looking for a book that has your basic Christmas cookie recipes. This one has some of those, but not as many as I was hoping for.It does have a good selection of cookies, however, and the recipes seem pretty easy to make. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ingenious format
I have owned this book for several years and it by far my favorite cookie book- I would even say my favorite cook book period. I love the cover photos of various cookies and the Christmas vs everyday format! My book has been used so much so much it automatically opens to family favorites such as the chocolate crinkles cookies. I just purchased one for my nephew who is a newly wed for a wedding present. I have given several of these books for Christmas presents over the years and always get rave reviews.

4-0 out of 5 stars Neat two sided cookbook!
This cook book is so neat because on one side it has regular everyday cookies, you turn it over and it has hoilday cookies.I have never seen another cook book like this before. There aren't many pictures which was kind of dissapointing, but there are cookie recipes from around the world so that make up for the number of pictures. The neatest recipe seems to be Maple leaves where you actually use maple syrup.I haven't made anything yet beacause I just checked this book out, but I can't wait to make the leaves this fall. There are also some neat bar cookie things that in this book also that would be neat to make for hoilday parties. One of the neatest holiday recipes is called Sledding Teddies, and Sledding Bears. The Sledding Teddies are 3-D which is really cute. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars British book with british ingredients
US buyers should keep in mind that this is a British publication. Although both weights and volumes are provided in the ingredient lists, some of those ingredients may be difficult to find in the US. Most notably, many of the recipes rely on something called Regal Icing, which is NOT the same as Royal Icing, but is something that can be rolled out and cut (like fondant? but it's not fondant). The recipe for Regal Icing provided near the start of the book calls for liquid glucose, which seems to be unavailable in the US; internet searches say that light corn syrup can be used instead.
I haven't tried any of the recipes yet (I'll post again when I do). But I've noticed that many of the recipes (esp. in the "With Family and Friends" section) are essentially the same, and rely on the decorating/styling for differentiation - which is odd, since many of those recipes lack photos or other illustrations.

1-0 out of 5 stars don'twaste your money
Not a good book.I actually haven't tried one recipe in this book, because none of them sounded good.I like the cover though!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Recipes

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS!!!!!

I urge everyone to buy this book!!

2-0 out of 5 stars not what i expected

5-0 out of 5 stars great biscotti
I have made several of these biscotti recipe's and they are all very good.I like the fact that NO fats are used.I used the mixed dried fruit and added my favorite flavorings.Well satisfied with thes recipe's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this one
Just wanted to tell the readers that this is an excellent book. I have tried several if not most of these recipes and all came out perfect. Love, love this book - this one is a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
Great recipes - didnt realize biscotti's are so healthy (no butter, oil) and so yum when eaten fresh. Easy to make too, and I've been experimenting with substituting flavors, and they come out well. I love to dunk mine in tea / coffee. Highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok, but try adding bread flour to recipe
I have had this book for several years and used it often.Recipes are ok, but never really great either in terms of flavor, texture, or crunch. Adding 1/2 to 3/4 bread flour to recipes helps. BTW, better biscotti recipes in Anthony Parkinson's wonderful little book, "Italian Desserts" Italian Desserts -- These are also 'low fat' no butter. For Parkinson's recipies, I also substitute bread flour for 1/2 to 3/4 c. of the total flour as well.Something to do with protein content and structure of final product.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Friendly Approach to First-Time Biscotti Bakers
Easy-to-follow instructions and lots of delicious variations that I still have to try! I did have to add more flour to the Biscotti di Prato recipe, as the dough was very sticky (I used King Arthur flour), but the biscotti turned out very good. The second baking needed about 10 minutes on each side to get it golden and crispy. The flavors are supposed to develop over time, but we couldn't help devouring the biscotti as soon as they were cool enough to handle! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cookies For the Win
I got this book YEARS ago as a Christmas present, since my grandmother knew I was interested in baking. It collected dust on the shelf for a long time, as I was never all that interested in making cookies. But once I decided to start baking and shipping cookies to friends, I decided to give it a go.

It's worlds better than any other cookie recipes I've seen. The author is very clear with her instructions, which is a must since there are very few pages where you can actually see how the recipe is supposed to look when it's finished.I usually won't even touch a cookbook unless it's got pictures, but I did all right with this one.Better than all right!

She loads her pages with useful tips that can be applied to many other cookie recipes, like using sheets of parchment paper on the baking tray.I just made 7 recipes over the past week, and they've all turned out fantastic.I particularly recommend the Pecan Cinnamon Crisps, which turned out picture perfect and tasted amazing.

You'll also get a kick out of her extreme stories as to how she got the recipes, because this lady freaking LOVES cookies.Considering the results of the ones I've tried, I really can't complain. They're fun to make, and even more fun to shower on your coworkers. They'll worship you for a few days.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Most Loved and Trusted Cookbooks
During a brief stop in Camden, Maine in July, 1999, I startled my poor husband with my mad dash for the local bookstore. I knew this book had been published recently; and, after Bake and Freeze Chocolate Desserts, I knew I had to have it.My hope was to find an autographed copy in the author's hometown bookstore, which I did.(Contrary to my husband's claim, this does not constitute stalking Mrs. Klivans.)I've never been sorry, as it quickly became one of my very favorite cookbooks.

I have had great success with the many cookies I've tried, including Millionaire's Shortbread, Uncle Howie's Butterscotch Bars, Cherry Orange Flaky Flats, Chocolate-Dipped Hazelnut Shortbread, Summer Berry Picnic Bars, Key Lime Bars, and more. The Chocolate Peppermint-Crunch Sandwich Cookies are some of the prettiest and tastiest Christmas cookies I make; and the Chocolate Truffle Squares are cookies to make when no one else is home, so you can indulge, then hide the rest in the back of the freezer and never have to share.I always enjoy Elinor Klivans' notes and find her baking advice very helpful. The cookies in this book have made me famous with my family and friends.I'd give copies as gifts, but then everyone would know how easy it is to bake like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best - Don't listen to the negatives...
Elinor is a wonderful and inspiring cook. Her books are all good and full of quality recipes, authentic flavors, good advice and clear instructions. I have had the pleasure of meeting this great cook and had a cooking lesson with her. Believe me she does test and test and test her recipes and listens to all kinds of feedback on her treats. I was scared to make pastry dough until she showed me how to do it, and so easily too. I love this book especially at the holidays. The cookies and bars are easy to make and store/ship well. My treat receivers always comment on the flavor, texture and variety of my efforts. I am Elinor's biggest fan-she is a wonderful cook and person!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Baking Book
I love this book!I am blown away by the negative reviews of this book. This is my most used baking book.

So here are the comments I have written in my copy of this book.Swahili Shortbread - "Excellent" (underlined twice);Avenue "J" Butter Cookies - "Very Yummy-Buttery"; Triple-Chocolate-Topped Chocolate Butter Cookies - "Impressive Buttery, Crisp Cookie" and many more "very good", "yummy", "buttery".

"The Best of Everything Chocolate Chip Cookies" recipe is great.I have made this several times and usually put white chocolate chips on the chocolate half of the cookie and call them Yin Yang Cookies. They look cool and are easy to make.

The price of this book is worth it for the Swahili shortbread alone. It is simple and absolutely fabulous!

There are notes about the history of the recipes, and freezing and storage tips.We are having a bake sale next week at work and something from this book will defintely be successfully sold there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Recipes were NOT TESTED!
Totally agree with reviewer of ERRATIC from Indiana. I also made the coffee Toffee Bars but the filling totally engulfed the crumb topping and it was just a mess. I made the Toasted Hazelnut Shortbread Hearts (see glossy picture insert) and it totally failed. The 'hearts' cooked into blobs and were totally burnt because the recipe instructions says to bake the 2 inch hearts in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. I thought the problem was in the editing, so I baked another batch at a lower oven temperature of 300 degrees. Same results, blobs of unrecognizable less burnt goo. This cookbook author writes for many newspapers and has other cookbooks, but has convinced me NOT to trust her recipes. The most frustrating fact is that I spent all this time and effort without having any cookies to eat!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Cookie Book Ever
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my niece who wanted to learn how to bake cookies.I chose this book specifically because I have the same one and love it.Tons of recipes for bar cookies, shaped cookies, pressed cookies and more - all with beautiful photos and easy to follow directions.Highly recommend this beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Wife Is Turning Me Into A Cookie Monster Thanks To This Book!
My wife truly loves cooking so that makes me the lucky taste tester and I can tell you that the tastes I've tested that came out of this terrific cookbook have been fabulous!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good cookie cookbook, especially for "Moms"
When I was a teen, one of my mother's friends lent us a Betty Crocker cookie cookbook.Once I saw the recipes inside, I just had to copy some of them down. They sounded absolutely delightful.

I am very happy that, years later, I found this cookbook which contains many of the same recipes.I excitedly bought it and couldn't wait to get it home to make some terrific cookies from it. Since then, I've made several recipes from this book. The lemon-lime cookies have a delicious icing and my husband loves them.I've also made the chocolate-cherry stripe cookies and they came out very cute. The orange madeleine recipe makes a very delicate, simple, almost cake-like cookie.I've had requests for that recipe from those who tasted it.This cookbook also has a number of charming recipes to make "cute" cookies for kids.

I would recommend this cookbook to most cooks.I think it makes a great "mom" cookbook because the recipes aren't too difficult and many of the cookies would appeal to kids.If you are looking for a sophisticated cookie cookbook, you would probably find one of Maida Heatter's cookbooks more to your liking. This cookbook is fun, though, and has some very tasty recipes!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultimately Scrumptious!
My husband got this for me after I bungled about four batches of cookies in a row. I haven't bungled one since. The recipes range from the simple and traditional: the ultimate chocolate chip, the ultimate oatmeal, and the ultimate sugar cookies, to brownies and bars (the lemon bars are PERFECT), to more unusual: specialty and holiday/party cookies. If ever I need a recipe for krumkake or orange madeleines, pizzelles or springerle, I know where I'll go.

The recipes are well organized and easy to execute. The pictures are in mouth-watering color and plentiful. My little boy loves to page through it to look at all the yummy varieties. If I had one criticism, it would be that this book should really be spiral bound, for those of us who really USE our cookbooks in the kitchen! ... Read more

The bakers begin by singling out the "Nine Essential Cookies" and variations that reflect a variety of tastes, textures, and ingredients:

  • brownies

  • shortbread
  • oatmeal cookies
  • peanut butter cookies
  • molasses-ginger cookies

You'll find complete instructions for making cookie icings, fillings, and dips. You'll find a thorough overview of the essential ingredients of cookie baking, explaining the chemistry of flours and grains, leavens, sweeteners, fats, dairy products, flavorings, and the science of how these ingredients work together. You'll also learn tips on substitutions and variations; measuring and weighing ingredients; even advice on high-altitude baking. Recipes are enhanced with sidebars providing hints, shortcuts, troubleshooting advice, and recipe lore. And each recipe is accompanied by a complete nutritional analysis. Illustrations throughout the book provide clear step-by-step instructions that take the mystery out of such baking terms as "creaming," "soft-ball stage," and "folding." Finally, a comprehensive illustrated chapter describes the essential baking tools you'll want to have on hand. 150 line black & white illustrations.Amazon.com Review
Americans spend over $550 million annually on Oreos, some indication of our cookie infatuation. Meeting that passion head-on, The King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion offers 400-plus recipes for almost every cookie under the sun--from traditional favorites like oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies (13 recipes including the soft and crisp kinds, plus 11 variations, such a Orange-Pistachio Milk Chocolate Chippers); to global treats like shortbread, tuiles, springerle, and biscotti; to all kinds of bars and soft bites such as brownies, Whoopie Pies, and Hot and Sweet Ginger Squares.

The Cookie Companion is in the King Arthur tradition, which means that it's a teaching cookbook--one overflowing with tips, pointers, lore, and other compelling information. Thus, for example, the introduction to Special Roll-Out Sugar Cookies informs readers that thorough dough-rolling creates thin, snapping-crisp cookies, but roll the dough a bit thicker, and "you’ve got crunchy." Their no-detail-too-small introductory basics are greatly aided by the tour-de-force illustrations of Laura Hartman Maestro. For example, a box on bar-cookie cutting shows readers the five basic size configurations, depending on pan dimensions. Bakers who have routinely paused, knife in hand, before a pan of just-baked brownies, trying to decide how to end up with, say, 24 large squares, won't, following the illustrations, do so again. A section on cookie decoration is equally definitive, as is a final chapter on ingredients, which offers, for example, a full discussion of sugars, plus asides like "Is Splenda the Answer to Low-Calorie Baking" (maybe) and "Can I Substitute a Liquid Sweetener for a Dry One to Make My Cookies Sifter?" (sometimes, but never measurement for measurement).

With "Create-a-Cookie," a section that focuses on manipulating basic dough mixtures to make checkerboard and pinwheel cookies among others; recipes for glazes, icings, dips and finishes; illustrated equipment profiles; plus color photos that depict the cookies in all their edible glory, the book is, simply, a must-have for cookie bakers everywhere. --Arthur Boehm ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you can only have one cookie cookbook...
This is the one cookie cookbook to own!It is my go-to cookbook when baking cookies. The recipe for Fudgy Brownies is worth the price alone. The recipes I have tried so far are:

Fudgy Brownies - super moist and fudgy, great chocolate flavor - the best!
Scandinavian Blondies - excellent almond bar that tastes like it has almond paste, but it doesn't.Delicious!
Pecan Pie Bars - pecan pie in a sheet pan.Excellent!
Rocky Road Bars - a big hit when served to college students last week.

A friend has used Cookie Companion a lot and she says every recipe she has tried is delicious. I will be giving Cookie Companion as gifts to our family members this holiday season.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get rave reviews every time I use a recipe.
This book has some of the best cookie recipes; when I use one of the recipes, I always get rave reviews from people I share them with.I have found that the book offers alot of additions that you can add, such as when you put in cranberries, use less of another ingredient. The recipes are also not complicated, and that encourages more baking.Just be sure to use King Arthur Flour for the best results; that' the best flour on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this cookbook!!
King Arthur Flour cookbooks have never let me down. This one is no exception. I love that this cookbook has over 500 pages of cookie, brownie, and bar recipes. Most cookie sections of a cookbook have your standard chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal cookie recipes and a few variations of those recipes. This book has all of the standard recipes plus a ton of other great cookie recipes.

The book is organized into sections (i.e. no bake cookies, decorated cookies). Most of the sections have some standard recipes and then variations using those standard recieps.

This book also has a lot of good information and tips. I have been making cookies for years, but I learned a new new tricks from reading this cookbook. For example, if you stagger the cookies on the cookie sheet, you can get more cookies on a cookie sheet.

This cookbook is a must have if you love cookies!

*Note* King Arthur Flour is a high gluten flour. There are some recipes where substituting a different all-purpose flour will not come out with the same results.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about cookies
I love this book for a variety of reasons. It's comprehensive, covers the chemistry that makes baked goods delicious, is written in a friendly (but not too folksy) manner and best of all, offers recipe variations for soft and crispy cookies. (My husband loves the former; I, the latter.) It's also great reading if you love food history and culture, and it made me want to be part of the delightful King Arthur Family. I highly recommend this to all who love cookies and baking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a good first impression
What I like about this book is that the ingredients are easy to find, the recipes are not complicated, lots of photos, brief comments about the cookies on some recipes, great tips, and allergy information.

So, today I came across the "Pumpkin Pick-Ups" recipe. The photo looks like a thin, crusty type pumpkin cookie. Now I can hold my own when it comes to sugary sweets, but this was WAAAY too sweet! I threw it out. The consistency was more like pie and not one of the crusty looking pumpkin cookie slice (p. 201). I used un-sweetened rice milk, which is still naturally quite sweet. So adding sugar to that, was yucky sweet. This basically crustless pumpkin pie had just as much sugar as a real pumpkin pie. I did follow the recipe exactly, minus the flax meal. Maybe that was the differnce in texture.

Over-all, that was not a good first impression of the book, but I am willing to try a few more recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of allergy friendly options
This book has a lot of allergy friendly recipes. As with any allergy friendly recipes, they are not all great, but it is nice to have a selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty awesome
this book is very easy to follow and everything i have made so far has turned out awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air!
After making the "Mini-ficent Pancakes" for breakfast this morning, and having my non-allergic husband come in and say, "Which ones are mine?" I was reminded that I had to come and write a review for this book. The pancakes look so appealing, you could not tell the difference between the allergen-free ones and the just add water ones I was also making for the rest of the family.
I have two children with multiple, severe, food allergies, among them wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, and corn, which any allergy mom knows, excludes seemingly all baking ingredients, and many of their usual substitutes.Prior efforts at pancakes and other desserts were so complex (unknown and hard to find long lists of ingredients), time-consuming, and ugly/poor tasting, that it had been a while since I even attempted making any treats for my two "bubble babies" :)
In contrast, this book has simple (few ingredients), easy-to-follow, and tasty recipes that allow you for onces to feel adequate in feeding your kids something they are begging for and able to enjoy. My kids got to see what it was like for their non-allergic sister to be asking for their food/treats, instead of the other way around. At Thanksgiving, they could have sugar cookies (that they helped decorate) and pumpkin pie, rather than having no dessert at all.
If you know the frustration of trying to cook for people with allergies, this book will be a breath of fresh air and renew your hope and energy in trying to make life and food a little more "normal".
