Product Description

Most programming books are about as exciting as Bill Gates' left ear. But with this latest eye-opening release, technology author Karl Moore shows it doesn't have to be quite so dull and uninspiring. Split into eight dynamic parts, Moore's book covers every key area of real-life computer development&emdash;and promises to turn even newbie programmers into VB .NET wizards, quicker than anyone else. It's a perfect tutorial guide for those learning VB .NET from scratch or moving from VB6.

Karl Moore's Visual Basic .NET: The Tutorials consists of a number of key tutorials, each dealing with a specific, "real-life" area of programming. The tutorials are broken down into easily digestible 10-page installments, with an accompanying FAQ and review sheet at the close. 2-0 out of 5 stars I am returning my copy of this book
I am a programmer, familiar with old fashion languages and having had some experience with ASP, SQL Server, Access.
The book has some useful information and tips, shows where to start. However, it is only a set of quick tutorials and I had to order a solid beginner's book anyway.
I find the author's abundant humor very simplistic and annoying. For example when he returns to button control this is what his readers get, "Okay, so you've seen this one before, but I'm feeling repetitive. Repetitive. Repetitive. What, not even a sympathy laugh? Sheesh. That's the thanks you get. Anyway, it's a button. You click it; it does stuff.Whoop-de-doo."Then there is list of 5 key properties, 2 key methods, 2 key events and one line of sample code.No explanation provided for any of them.

I don't know why this book got a lot of positive comments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Low-impact, high-value intro to VB.NET
Moore uses a light, conversational writing style which occasionally borders on the downright silly, yet is sure toassuage the fears of first-timers to programming, and/or those unfamiliar with Object-Oriented Programming.

Just the opposite of a dense and dull textbook...

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate intro into VB.NET
The author, while having an amusing style of prose which does wear on the reader at times, covers a wide range of topics in this book, so much so that rarely does it give you enough to feel like an adequate programmer in that area. Also, most of the time author say "do this" and rarely does he explain well the theory and design behind why you are doing it. I would have given it a slightly worse review, if not for the Tip/Tricks Section (chapter 8) which is an excellent chapter on how to do various tasks in ASP.NET and VB.NET. You will need another book(s) to explain ADO.NET, .NET, and the OOP aspects of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars the reason behind the reviews...
This was one of the first VB .NET books I bought. I thought i would come online to give it a review as it was so good. i thought perhaps i would help it's sales... but there are so many already!! The only extra thing i can say is that this book rules, it's great, and it's fantastic to kick start your .net adventure. Well done!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant delivery, great job
I took this book on holiday with me to Majorca.. it was fantastic to read a tutorial book without having to even be in front of the computer. Mr Moore teaches in a way that makes you read and want to learn more. If you're new, or are porting to .NET, this is the book you HAVE to buy!! (ps. it arrived next day for me) ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides an introduction to naming and directory technologies and an overview of the Java Naming and Directory Interface(tm) (JNDI). The tutorial in this book progresses from the most basic to advanced JNDI capabilities and techniques, including more than 200 working examples that demonstrate writing, compiling, and running directory-enabled Java(tm) programs. In addition, this book contains a comprehensive reference section that documents all JNDI classes and interfaces. The accompanying CD-ROM includes JNDI software and service providers, the Java 2 platform, and the hypertext version of the Java Tutorials, the JDBC(tm) tutorials, and the JNDI tutorial. JNDI enables programs written in the Java programming language to access naming and directory services-a vital element of the complex distributed computing environment for today's enterprise systems. A platform-independent interface, JNDI allows Java applications to work with standard and proprietary services from a variety of vendors-including the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), Novell Directory Service (NDS), Microsoft Active Directory, and the Solaris(tm) Operating Environment Network Information Service (NIS)-so that enterprises need not lock into a single-vendor solution. Specific topics covered include: Accessing the LDAP via JNDI Using the directory as an object repository Configuring a JNDI client Handling event notifications from the directory Creating a federation of naming systems Building a JNDI service provider All developers using the Java programming language to write applications or subsystems that access naming and directory services will find this book an indispensable resource. Amazon.com Review
Aimed at the Java developer who wants to program with corporate directories, the JNDI API Tutorial and Reference provides a notably comprehensive tour of basic and advanced topics in JNDI programming. Featuring dozens of useful code excerpts that show just how to do it, this practically minded guide is all you need to use this powerful API standard effectively.

This book includes a printed version of Sun's online JNDI tutorial that is bundled with a comprehensive guide to JNDI classes. First, the authors show you how to get and up and running with JNDI and how to handle basic look-ups in directories. (A practical note is that this title is excellent when describing the actual error messages and "common problems" that you might face in your code, and how to resolve them.) While many programmers will use this book to learn how to search, read, and write directory entries, they'll find it good at explaining how JNDI fits in with other directory standards, too (such as LDAP). The authors also cover how to access multiple "federations" of directories, as well as hooking into directory "events" or notifications. For experts, more advanced sections look at the ins and outs of creating your own directory servers. The last 300 pages provide a worthy reference to every JNDI class (with over 80 classes) and every property and method, along with links to the examples in the first tutorial section that illustrate each class in action.

Whether you're someone who just wants to get started with directory programming, or if you'll be designing JNDI servers from the ground up, you'll find the JNDI API Tutorial and Reference to be a solid resource for effective directory programming for Java developers of all levels. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Basic and advanced tutorial for the Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI), naming conventions using strings and URLs, directory basics: attributes, directory services, and searches; directory and object stores, JNDI overview: architecture, context, names, bindings, and references; LDAP support, federations, basic JNDI programming examples, common problems and solutions, tutorial for simple naming and directory operations, storing and retrieving Java objects in directories, state and object factories, tips for combining JNDI and LDAP directory programming, creating a JNDI-enabled service provider, and reference to all JNDI classes. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars only book so far with the JNDI lesson GO FOR IT if you need a book on JNDI
This book is basically the same thing as on the sun website. It came without a cd although the authors mentioned a cd in the book for source code lookup.I have the impression the book was out of print because of the already mentioned cd issue and the fact that amazon had to wait for long time to get this book from the publishing warehouse(This is the reason amazon gave me for delaying the shipping)
This book is half tutorial(0-396) half API(397-756) with some bonuses like LDAP schemas.

4-0 out of 5 stars get it online
I heard the material was the same, but was hoping for a more thoughtful layout and more of a teaching perspective. No such luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for a novice
Having about a year or so experience with Java, I bought this book intending to use JNDI on a project.I was hoping for a clear, simple tutorial; instead I had to wrestle with setting up my environment for at least two hours before I could even run one sample program. The authors do NOT clearly state which .JAR files have to go in jre/lib/ext, they do not explain that the path in the samples needs to be changed from /tmp/tutorial to whatever directory you are working in, and some of their examples are wrong (page 27 - the Lookup program does NOT take a command-line argument).I haven't started the Directory Operations chapter yet (since it requires an LDAP server and I haven't installed one yet), but if it took this long just to get through the basics, I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a lot of time reading Sun's forums looking for answers...

5-0 out of 5 stars So far the best
After reading documentation of JNDI and Wrox's Java Server Programmingbook, I realized that I need a more detailed hands-on book. I downloadedNetscape Directory Server for NT and read its document. Unfortunately (orfortunately), I can make my java program work on JNDI, LDAP until I readTHIS book. I am happy to find it on sun's website. Make comparison byyourself. It is really an excellent book on JNDI.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but...
I have gone through this book, and find that it lacks systematic detailedinformation on the Preparations section, before being able to attempt theexamples in the book.In my opinion this is a very serious drawback, andcan throw off readers new to JNDI.So, in essence this book can be furtherimproved upon by the authors with due consideration to the initialpreparedness and loading of seed data sections, to enable the readers whoattempt the examples, a more fruitful and enjoyable experience. ... Product Description
ANSYS Workbench Software Tutorial with MultiMedia CD is directed toward using finite element analysis to solve engineering problems. Unlike most textbooks which focus solely on teaching the theory of finite element analysis or tutorials that only illustrate the steps that must be followed to operate a finite element program, ANSYS Workbench Software Tutorial with MultiMedia CD integrates both. This textbook and CD are aimed at the student or practitioner who wishes to begin making use of this powerful software tool.

The primary purpose of this tutorial is to introduce new users to the ANSYS Workbench software, by illustrating how it can be used to solve a variety of problems. To help new users begin to understand how good finite element models are built, this tutorial takes the approach that FEA results should always be compared with other data results. In several chapters, the finite element tutorial problem is compared with manual calculations so that the reader can compare and contrast the finite element results with the manual solution. Most of the examples and some of the exercises make reference to existing analytical solutions

In addition to the step by step tutorials, introductory material is provided that covers the capabilities and limitations of the different element and solution types. The majority of topics and examples presented are oriented to stress analysis, with the exception of natural frequency analysis in chapter 12, and heat transfer in chapter 13.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Basic
This book gives you a very basic introduction to ANSYS workbench. I would prefer going to ANSYS portal to find better examples and tutorials.

5-0 out of 5 stars TO ALL TUTORIALS AUTHORS TAKE NOTE, THIS IS HOW TO DO IT!!!
I buy alot of books but never have the time to do reviews such as this. However I made an exemption with this one.

This tutorial is fantastic, easy to follow and highly recommended. I would have given this book and DVD tutorial 10 stars if allowed. To all you Tutorial authors for computer programming, CAD, FEA etc WAKE UP! this package is how to do it!

Some key requirements for a top tutorial package such as this:

First, publish your tutorial book with a DVD. The book and DVD work very well together and makes your package stand out from the competition. It's better than having one of my lecturers in front me.
Second, make the DVD and book easy to follow for beginners, not just you the author.
Third, don't miss any steps.
Fourth, make the tutorial comprehesive enough to be worth the price, eg 250+ pages.

To Fereydoon Dadkhah and Jack Zacher, thank you so much for efforts. Ever thought of doing a similiar book and DVD package for C programming, Solidworks and other aspects of ANSYS?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book may pay for itself.
As a practicing engineer, I had a chance to take an ANSYS class that used this text. As the synopsis states the text includes a CD-ROM that provides the working files mentioned in the text. The two worked flawlessly together. I have had other classes where the supporting files were no better than the written examples or were not very clear in their purpose. Not so with this text.

It works likes this: You follow the instruction in the textand what it says will happen... happens. No surprises. This is a step by step manual. It doesn't leave you behind. There are video lessons on the CD that show you exactly what to click and just what will happen. The screen shots are just what you will see as you follow each practice problem. Did I mention no surprises. This is one of the rare texts written with the student in mind. It doesn't talk down to you or over your head. All terms are the same ones that you will see in the software.

ANSYS software can make it possible to DFEMA an idea or to help with DOE for a change to an existing part. ANSYS makes its bones by taking a complex task and making it simple and efficient. This text takes the task of learning to use the ANSYS software and likewise efficiently teaches the novice how to make use of this invaluable tool.

Your next raise will pay for this book many times over. You need to learn ANSYS and you need to buy this book. Do it!

Product Description
Computersystems, whether hardware or software, are subject to failure. Precisely, what is afailure? It is defined as: The inability of a system or system component to perform a required function within specified limits. Afailure may be produced when a fault is encountered and a loss of the expected service to the user results [IEEE/AIAA P1633]. This brings us to the question of what is a fault? A fault is defect in the hardware or computer code that can be the cause of one or more failures. Software- based systems have become the dominant player in the computer systems world. Since it is imperative that computer systems operate reliably, considering the criticality of software, particularly in safety critical systems, the IEEE and AIAA commissioned the development of the Recommended Practice on Software Reliability. This tutorial serves as a companion document with the purpose of elaborating on key software reliability process practices in more detail than can be specified in the Recommended Practice. However, since other subjects like maintainability and availability are also covered, the tutorial can be used as a stand-alone document. While the focus of the Recommended Practice is software reliability, software and hardware do not operate in a vacuum. Therefore, both software and hardware are addressed in this tutorial in an integrated fashion. The narrative of the tutorial is augmented with illustrative solved problems. The recommended practice [IEEE P1633] is a composite of models and tools and describes the "what and how" of software reliability engineering. It is important for an organization to have a disciplined process if it is to produce high reliability software. This process uses a life cycle approach to software reliability that takes into account the risk to reliability due to requirements changes. A requirements change may induce ambiguity and uncertainty in the development process that cause errors in implementing the changes. Subsequently, these errors may propagate through later phases of development and maintenance. In view of the life cycle ramifications of the software reliability process, maintenance is included in this tutorial. Furthermore, because reliability and maintainability determine availability, the latter is also included. ... Read more
