Product Description
This book raises a lot of questions, considers a lot of tough cases, and mainly situates itself in the gray areas between certainties. It courts ambiguity and complexity and revels in difficulty in its examination of ethical issues in the realm of the Internet, the World Wide Web, electronic mail, and the networked classroom, in the rapidly expanding writing space of internetworked writing. ... Product Description

This thoroughly revised and expanded fourth edition of the successful Ethical and Social Issues in the Information Age provides an up-to-date examination of the ethical, social, and policy challenges stemming from the emergence of cyberspace, the convergence of telecommunication and computing technologies, and the miniaturization of computing, telecommunication, and information-enabling devices. This accessible textbook/reference broadly surveys thought-provoking questions about the impact of these new technologies, with particular emphasis on the rapid growth of a multitude of computer networks, including the Internet. It assumes only a very modest familiarity with basic computer literacy. Students at all levels who need to learn about computer ethics, the legal aspects of computing, network security, computer crime investigation, and biometrics will find this well-documented work an invaluable resource. The book is also highly useful for practitioners needing such insights for their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book that Raises Excellent Discussion Points
This book covers many topics, and is meant to provide more questions than answers. The author does an excellent job of discussing points that the reader is able to ponder on their own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly assembled college text
Many chapters ramble on with insignificant facts making it difficult to see what point the author is trying to make.Typographical errors are abundant due to insufficient editing and proofreading.I recommend schools find a different text to ethics in technology courses.

3-0 out of 5 stars A myriad of topics each discussed briefly
Excellent chapters covering morality, law, ethics, professional codes, and intellectual property rights. Provides a basic introduction to many topics that stimulate further study, research, and discussion. Discussion ofsocial issues is limited. The weaker chapters are the modern areas of theinformation age such as cyberspace, the internet, email, privacy, security, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality. ... Read more

Product Description

The internet has set off a technological revolution that has produced thorough changes in all industries. The volume at hand gives an analysis of the internet revolution. It covers questions reaching from the highly controversial thesis of the end of property rights in the internet caused by the non-rivalry of the "consumption" of information to questions regarding the repercussions of the internet on our understanding of the human person. Technological changes like the introduction of the electronic economy raise the question of how to manage its ethical problems and dilemmas. Contributions from applied ethics and business ethics analyse the ethical problems and the business ethics of the electronic economy in the fields of production, labour, consumption, and in handling trust and the abuse of trust in the electronic business relationships. The reader is provided with a comprehensive analysis of the electronic economy and its technological, social, and ethical problems.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Reason has very often been seen as the highest faculty of man and, therefore, a strong tendency to attempt to analyze man mainly in terms of the rational dimension exists. This tendency was strong in antiquity and was given renewed attention in the seventeenth century. In recent times, developments and advancements in computer science have given the notion renewed scientific support. In this tradition, man is not only analyzed in terms of rational faculties, but is often reduced to them. The philosophical conclusions drawn from computer science strengthen the view that man's highest faculty is reason. This work argues that this view of man is limited and insufficient because man is primarily a moral being, and the rational dimension is only instrumental in the developing and in exercising what is most important in man: the moral dimension. ... Product Description

This book on network ethics offers 15 scholarly chapters from a variety of disciplines and fields of study, all aimed at exploring some important aspect of how networks develop, enact, and enforce ethical norms. The chapters are ordered according to the levels of analysis each deals with, ranging from the cognitive/intrapersonal to the systemic/societal. Taken together, these chapter provide a fresh look at how networks are changing the way business is done and the way we think about ethics. Earlier versions of some chapters in this book were presented at the Conference ‘‘Network Ethics:The New Challenge in Business, ICT and Education,’’ hosted by the Center for Ethics, Business and Economics of the School of Business and Economics of the Catholic University of Portugal, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Northern Iowa.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be sued for slander and libel
"Some regions in the World of Warcraft, an extremely popular online game, have become so lawless that gangs of animated characters frequently attack lone avatars, stealing their virtual belongings and sometimes murdering them (Reynolds, 2010) This was quoted from a 2007 article in Washington post staff writer Alan Sipres: "In World of Warcraft, the most popular online game, with an estimated 8 million participants worldwide, some regions of this fantasy domain have grown so lawless that players said they fear to brave them alone. Gangs of animated characters have repeatedly preyed upon lone travelers, killing them and making off with their virtual belongings (Sipres, 2007)

Was the truthfullness of claims in this book even a remote priority in creating this book?I wouldn't be surpised if Activision doesn't sue the author and publisher for slander. These claims are entirely false and 15 minutes of actual research (even 2nd hand) would prove that. This book and author are a joke to academia and journalism.
