Excerpt: Cheyenne Mountain -Cheyenne Mountain in winter viewed from just outside of Fort CarsonThe Cheyenne Mountain complex traces its origins to 1956, when General Earle E. Partridge, commander of the Continental Air Defense Command, proposed construction of a new underground combat operations center to replace the outgrown and vulnerable above-ground facility at Ent Air Force Base, Colorado. The launch of Sputnik I, the world's first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957, demonstrated not only the accomplishments of the Soviet Union's space program, but also the capability to launch nuclear warheads from one continent to another. In response, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) was established on May 12, 1958. The Department of Defense started researching potential sites, and determined that Cheyenne Mountain was an ideal site, due to its location in the center of the continent, lack of earthquake activity, and proximity to the United States Air Force Academy and Fort Carson, Colorado. Excavation for the facility began three years later in May 1961, and was completed in May 1964. The NORAD Combat Operations Center became operational on February 6, 1966, and operations were transferred from Ent Air Force Base on April 20, 1966. The original requirement for an operations center in Cheyenne Mountain was to provide command and control in support of the air defense mission against the Soviet bomber threat, but several events and emerging technologies drove this mission to evolve beyond those initial needs. The development of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the 1960s presented a n...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=230370 ... Read more

Chapters: Salton Sea. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 29. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Salton Sea -It is estimated that for 3 million years, at least through all the years of the Pleistocene glacial age, the Colorado River worked to build its delta in the southern region of the Imperial Valley. Eventually, the delta had reached the western shore of the Gulf of California (the Sea of Cortez/Cortés) creating a massive dam which excluded the Salton Sea from the northern reaches of the Gulf. As a result, the Salton Sink or Salton Basin has had a long history of alternately being occupied by a fresh water lake and being a dry, empty desert basin, all according to random river flows, and the balance between inflow and evaporative loss. A lake would exist only when it was replenished by the river and rainfall, a cycle that repeated itself countless times over hundreds of thousands of years - most recently when the lake was recreated in 1905. There is significant evidence that the basin was occupied periodically by multiple lakes. Wave-cut shorelines at various elevations are still preserved on the hillsides of the east and west margins of the present lake, the Salton Sea, showing that the basin was occupied intermittently as recently as a few hundred years ago. The last of the Pleistocene lakes to occupy the basin was Lake Cahuilla, also periodically identified on older maps as Lake LeConte, and the Blake Sea, after American professor and geologist William Phipps Blake. Once part of a vast inland sea that covered a large area of Southern California, the endorheic Salton Sink was the site of a major salt mining operation. Throughout the Spanish period of California's history the area was referred to as the "Colorado Desert" after the Rio Colorado (Colorado River). In the 1853/55 rai...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=440359 ... Read more

From the author: The 889 local and regional land trusts in the United States conserve 2.7 million acres. However, the distribution of these groups is strikingly uneven from state to state. Colorado, historically a domain of secular commerce, has twenty-seven trusts protecting 42,000 acres; Utah, whose Mormon millennialism and social beliefs greatly hinder land-trust establishment, has only one trust protecting 220 acres. Although economic, political, and legal factors explain the uneven distribution of trusts in other settings, the underlying cultural geography of places must be comprehended before efforts are made to conserve them.

Product Description
Chapters: Street Grid. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 152. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: A uniform street-naming system is used in the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area, covering Denver, Adams, Arapahoe, Jefferson, and parts of Broomfield and northern Douglas County. However, there are significant areas within the metro area that do not conform to the master grid of street names below. Northern Douglas County, save for the names of the major arterials extending into Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, and Parker, falls into this category. Also, a significant area in unincorporated Adams County generally bounded by bounded by 70th, Pecos, 88th, and York largely has its own street names. Finally, the City of Littleton has largely maintained its own set of names, though these names are interspersed with the metropolitan street grid names. Broomfield is an interesting case. Recent development in that area has seen a merging of Boulder County addressing and Broomfield names with Metro Denver addressing and names. A drive up a recently completed stretch of Sheridan Boulevard illustrates this fact. Cross streets are ordered 14th Ave, 15th Ave, 134th Ave, 18th Ave, 136th Ave, etc. Generally, the boundaries follow the old county boundaries along 120th and Sheridan, but addressing has become messy for developers north of 144th within Broomfield. Finally, Jefferson County has different names for its major east-west arterials than does Arapahoe County. South of Belleview, the order goes; Bowles, Coal Mine, Ken Caryl, and Chatfield. In Arapahoe County, the order goes Belleview, Orchard, Arapahoe, Dry Creek, and County Line. This list represents the extent of the master grid as of 2008. As a general rule, the grid is complete or mostly complete in all of Denver, Englewood, Aurora north of Colfax an...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17649914 ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever - is this a joke?
This book is seriously bad. The illustrations are horrible. The text is useless and doesn't even tell a story, let alone something that would capture a child's attention. And, finally, there are mistakes throughout. Even if this had been written by a non-English speaker, I would think they'd run it through an editing phase to eliminate the basic grammar and punctuation mistakes. I'll return this FOR SURE.
p.s. I would give it zero stars, seriously, but the system just insisted that I rate it with something. This book does not deserve even one star. ... Read more
